Chapter 34

Even though Lucy was back, and she was herself, she was completely different but I couldn't put my finger on the subtle changes. She smiled the same, she laughed the same, her eyes even lit up the same. But she was withdrawn.
Erza hasn't been at work, she had been sick, but she was always sickly. The environment in which we worked went from toxic and hazardous to calm and exciting. Lucy was the complete opposite from Erza and she helped where Erza would yell and critique. I sit back in the chair as I look down the hall. I was in Cana's office but looking into Lucy's office.
For a while now I find myself speaking more and more to Cana like things had been before. We seemed inseparable as we were posted in the same vehicles, we were working the same overtime shifts. I had almost forgotten why we drifted apart. Cana knew she could mesmerize any man on this station and she could make them do as she asked. That was her beautify and her amazing body. And she knew how to work it. She had every man wrapped around her pinky and I was always her number one pick.
"So I want to join you tonight at your meeting." Cana says with a sweet smile on her face. I smile and nod my head.
"I would be glad to have you there." I say as I see Zeref walk past the office and to Lucy's office and as he stops in the door he smiles and soon he is engulfed in Lucy's arms as they hugged. And I mean really hug, not at all that half hearted shit we always do.
"Stupid fucker you shouldn't drink that much!" I hear Lucy say as she let's go and she takes a step back and looks to Zeref. I furrow my brows as I try to focus on what Cana is saying yet also trying to focus on what was going on between Zeref and Lucy.
"Just thank you so much for coming to pick me up and driving my car home." At this I furrow my brow. What were they talking about? Why was she driving his car?
"I told Mavis and Bora to join to." At this I nod my head at Cana. My attention was still on Zeref and Lucy because something just wasn't right.
"Thank you very much." I say glancing back to Cana before she notices my attention is not on her. And believe me she would be upset if she figured out she did not have my undivided attention.
"Yeah, yeah. Next time you and Cosmos shouldn't both get so fucking drunk." At this I frown as I continue to listen to the other two in the other office.
"Cosmos can't handle her alcohol. She thanks you as well." Zeref says and at this Lucy chuckles. Was I missing something? "We should arrange a date sometimes!" Zeref says and I hear Lucy chuckle.
"Natsu are we going to ride together tonight then?" Cana asks and I quickly look to her with a smile.
"Sure!" I reply and rise to my feet. "I'll see you later Cana." I say and I walk out and then Zeref turns around and nods to me.
"Natsu let's go work!" I see Lucy poke her face in view and she looks at me and it's been a while since I really saw her but she is smiling. She waves at me and then Zeref is striding to me, he slaps me on my back and then it's like he's almost guiding me out of the office. We leave the office without another word but thoughts are running around in my mind.
Was the thing between Laxus and Lucy still a thing? Was Zeref after Lucy, even if she was so much older… well 4 years older then he was. Was our agreement still in place? So many questions were in my head that when I looked up again, I was walking into the office, it was already past 4. So most people would have gone home already. I was on my way to Cana's office to see if she was almost ready to go to the meeting but I stop as I look into Lucy's eyes.
"Natsu," her voice was soft and sweet, and she was wearing her smile.
"Your still here?" I ask a bit surprised.
"Yeah, I'm waiting for the night shift, I have to give them some stuff." Lucy states and at this I nod my head. I take a step forward and she raises her hand to stop me. "Lets go to the garden and chat, I haven't spoken to you in a while." She states and I furrow my brows.
"Oh okay." I say as I take a step back not sure why we can't just walk to her office.
"Captain Cana is still here and she can hear everything from her office." I tilt my head and then nod. I never knew that but I smile neither the less. She walks up to me and then she hooks her arm in mine as we start to walk to the little pond with a garden stools and table. "How are you?" she asks stepping closer to me.
"I'm okay, and you? Why did you go to the doctor?" I ask and my voice going low as I mention the doctors appointment like I was not even suppose to know that she was at the doctor.
"Just a check up." Lucy replies and I stop as I face her.
"Are you lying to me?" I ask and her eyes meet mine.
"No. Why would I?" she asks and she looks hurt that I would even question her.
"You were limping." I say and at this she smiles.
"So when I moved in with my ex husband I fell at work and I tore my ligaments, so sometimes I struggle with my ankle at times. That's the main reason I don't jog anymore." She replies and I don't find anything in her voice to make me doubt her. We are almost at the pond when she stops and turns to me. "Thanks for worrying though…" she says lightly touching my cheek. I lean into her touch.
"How could I not?" I ask and I smile to her. "What's up with you and…" I trail of as I look to the side not sure, how I was going to play this if there was something between her and Zeref.
"Laxus? He's just being weird I guess. Since Levi said that they were an item." She says with a giggle and I raise a brow. What? "I know its absurd. She said they even had sex here at the office." At this I choke because we both know that's not true and this is what he mentioned to us last week at the coffee shop.
"That's a lie." I say and she smiles nodding her head.
"I know, I just don't know why she said it. I think she likes him still." Lucy replies and I shake my head from side to side.
"Maybe." I reply and then she turns to face me completely.
"But its whatever." She replies as she smiles and it's that warm smile that I know and love.
"And us?" I ask a bit unsure of what I was really asking.
She takes a step closer and now she was right in front of me. "We are still on…if you still want it." I take a step closer and our bodies are flush against each other. I lean down and just before I can place my lips to her she turns from me and then instantly takes a step back. I frown as I continue to look at her my hand holding her arm.
"Lucy?" I ask and she looks from side to side.
"We can't." she says then she turns to the side and she smiles. "The walls have ears and eyes Cst Dragneel." She states and I furrow my brows but it made sense. I nod my head, my hand sliding down her arm to her wrist and I hold her there.
