Chapter 34 : The Mother we share
Addison Montgomery's POV
I was peacefully working at the office when I got a phone call from Callie.
"Hi," I asked my friend, "how is it living with a woman at one week from giving birth?"
"It's an absolute joy to hear her snoring all night long!"
"I would imagine that you must be sleeping quite well these days."
"I swear, the sound she makes is quite impressive."
"This is often typical for pregnant women. I could explain the scientific reasons to you, but I'm not sure it's the best thing for your vision of your wife."
"I even recorded some of her snoring last night. I'll e-mail you the audio."
A few seconds later, I saw a notification on my screen that I had received an email from Callie. I opened the attachment straight away, eager to laugh at Arizona's snoring.
Nevertheless, I did not see a recording, but the photo of a beautiful baby with a charming expression in his eyes.
"I think you sent me the wrong attachment," I said without understanding the truth yet, "you sent me a picture of a baby. I can see that you're obsessed with babies."
"That's not just any baby."
"What do you mean?"
"I am very honored to introduce to you your godson, mister William Timothy Sloane Robbins-Torres!"
"When was he born?" I answered, with a radiant smile as I learned this extraordinary news.
"He was born this morning! SURPRISE!"
"He is splendid. Are you still in the hospital?"
"No, we are in the car with Sofia to go home. Sofia has school tomorrow, and we didn't want to leave her home alone. By the way, you're on the speakerphone."
"How are you Sofia? Are you happy to have a little brother?"
"I'm so very happy," the little girl replied with a voice that made her joy audible, "William is so cute. He is an angel!"
"That is true," I agreed, "I saw the picture your mother sent me. I get to see a bunch of babies every day, but this one actually wins them all. He is equal with my son!"
"The word of an expert on babies!" Callie commented.
"I am so happy for the four of you." I said, full of happiness.
"You will be able to come and see your godson whenever you want. We will be happy to introduce him to you and to introduce you to him."
"I think the three of us will come to see you for the vacations in two months. That will give you four of you some time to be in peace, the four of you."
"That's perfect for us."
"William is really super cute." Sofia kept saying in a voice that exuded the simple and pure happiness of finally being a big sister. "He has the same eyes as Mummy."
"I am so happy for the three of you. You deserve this kind of moment, you deserve to savor the results of your efforts. You know, Sofia, I only have an older brother so I don't know exactly how you may feel, but I can imagine all the joy that is in you right now."
"What's your big brother's name?" Sofia asked me.
"His name is Archer. I can't say that we always got along perfectly, but you know, there's always a special connection between a brother and a sister. When I was seven years old, I fell off my bike in the vineyard at my grandparent's vineyard on the way down a hill because my tire came off. I rolled over the handlebars and scratched my face, but Archer picked me up, told me I would be okay and carried me half a mile to get me home. From that day until now, Archer has been the big brother that brought me home."
"Why don't you get along well?" Sofia continued to question me with her ingenious and innocent voice.
"The difference between the family I grew up in and the family you're in is that my parents often put their needs above those of their children. We haven't been as fortunate as you are. You have two loving mothers, two mothers who want above all to make you and your brother happy."
"And how is an older sister supposed to act?" Sofia interrogated me. "What am I supposed to do to make sure Will is happy for the rest of his life?"
"You're just supposed to be nice to you, play with him, have fun with him and give him confidence, but don't worry about him, Callie and Arizona will do everything to make your little brother the happiest little boy in the world."
"Addi is absolutely right," Callie continued, "the only thing we aspire to in life is to make our children happy. You are the two most beautiful things that exist in the world."
"I'm sorry, girls," I said as I saw one of my patients about to walk into my office, "I'm going to have to leave you. I will call you back in a few days to check that everything is okay."
"Bye Addison." Callie said. "I will send you pictures."
"Bye auntie Addi." Sofia added.
