Chapter 35 – A question from the sky
The Death Star shocked for the first time. Smoke was everywhere, substantial rumblings came from all directions at once, people were running and shouting. The emperor was dead. The central powerful evil that had been the cohesive force of the empire was gone, so in that Death Star there was only confusion, desperation e damp fear.
In the midst of this, Luke and Ines had made it, somehow to the main docking bay, while they were trying to carry the hulking dead weight of Luke's father weakening body toward an Imperial shuttle. But halfway, Luke's strength gave out and he collapsed. Dragging his father by the arms, they were able to reach the ramp of the shuttle.
They rested Vader on the ground.
Vader mentioned Luke closer to him
"Luke, help me take this mask off"
Luke shook his head
"But, you'll die"
"Nothing can stop that now. Just for once let me look on you with my own eyes"
Luke nod. Ines grabbed his shoulder, showing she was there for him. Together they lifted the heavy helmet from Vader's head, and then they pulled the mask off reveling a face of a bad burn old man who smiled at them.
Ines smiled back. She stood there only to see the face of the grandfather of her child, but she knew that moment belonged to Luke and his father.
"I will leave you two alone" she said kissing Luke's cheek and nod to Anakin before standing up and walked up the ramp.
"Great girl you have here. Your love gives you strength. You two were meant to be together. You will be great parents and raise my grandchildren the right way"
Luke smiled at that.
"Now go, my son. Leave me"
"No. You're coming with us. I'll not leave you here. I've got to save you" he told him
"You already have, Luke" He whispered "You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister… you were right"
With that, he closed his eyes and Anakin Skywalker died.
"Father, I won't leave you" Luke said, bowing his head while the tears rolled down his cheeks.
A tremendous explosion shook the place, making Luke raise up and dragging his father corpse inside the shuttle, the ramp closed behind him.
Ines was inside the cockpit, already warm up the shuttle. Once Luke entered, she looked at him and saw the tears. She knew what happened, she felt his pain and she pulled him into her arms in a tight hug.
Luke hugged her tightly and rest his face on Ines shoulder. He lost so much the past 4 years. He lost his uncle and aunt, Ben, Biggs, Master Yoda, and now his father. But also he gained a lot too. He gained a great friendship with Han and Chewie, a twin sister in Leia and he gained Ines, the woman he loved and together they already were starting a family. Yes, he would be a father pretty soon, and he would love his child and his future siblings alongside with their mother, forever.
The shuttle shook and they pulled apart
"It is time to go before the Alliance blows this place" Ines told and Luke nod.
Sitting down on the chairs, the shuttle lift up and they leave the Death Star just in time, making Luke take a deep breath. He and Ines were saved.
The Millennium Falcon entered in the main core of the Death Star. Seeing that he said
"Go for the power regulator on the north tower. I'll take the main reactor. We're carrying concussion missiles, should penetrate. Once I let them go, we won't have much time to get out of here, though"
"I'm already on my way out" Wedge exclaimed as he fired his torpedoes with a Corellian war-cry, hitting both sides of the north tower, and peeled off, accelerating.
The Falcon loosed its concussion missiles with a powerful roar. For another second the flash was too bright to see what had happened. And then the whole reactor began to go.
"Direct hit" Shouted Lando "Now comes the hard part"
The shaft was already caving in on top of him, creating a tunnel effect. The Falcon maneuvered through the twisting outlet, through the walls of flame, and through moving shafts, always just ahead of the continuing chain of explosions.
Wedge tore out of the superstructure at barely at light speed, whipped around the near side of Endor, being followed my the Millennium Falcon that shot towards Endor, moments before the Death Star flared into brilliant oblivion, like a supernova.
Endor:
Han was binding Leia's arms when the Death Star blew up. The Ewoks started to chanting and jumping, celebrating that big victory of the Alliance.
"They did it" 3PO said to R2.
Leia and Han looked up. Han looked up and then looked at Leia
"I'm sure Luke and Ines weren't on that thing when it blew"
"They weren't. I can feel it"
Han looked at Leia. She had feelings for Luke and not for him. He could see that.
"You love him. Don't you?"
Leia looked back at him with a surprise look on her face. What kind of a question was that?
"Yes" she said like it was obvious.
"All right. I understand. When this is over, I will leave. The last thing I want is to force someone to be with me when she is in love with someone else"
Leia sighed with a smile
"It's not like that it all" she said resting her hand on her cheek "He's my twin brother"
Han looked at her with wide eyes. Luke and Leia were twins!
"Brother?" he said
Leia nod
"You silly. Come on Han, Luke only have eyes for Ines and they are going to have a baby. Which means I will be an aunt" she smiled at that. And looking at Han, she smiled when he pulled her into a kiss.
The night had fall. Luke stood in the forest of Endor, in front of a great pile of logs and branches, holding a torch in his hand and hid it, letting the flames consume the body of his father. Looking at Ines, he grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms as both looked at the flames, while above them fireworks illuminated the sky.
The word has spread across the galaxy with the news that the Emperor was dead and the Empire had fall.
"The whole galaxy already knows what happened?" she said looking up. "What is going to happen? What the future would bring now that the Empire is gone?"
Luke looked up and then looked at Ines who was still looking at the fireworks above them.
"I know that my future will be bright" he said rubbing her belly, making Ines looked at him, resting her hand on top of his, smiling at him.
"Mine too" and they kiss, tasting each other lips. Luke smiled as they pulled back. The night was not over, there was something else he needed to do.
"Come" he said holding her hand as they decided to gather with the others.
In the small Ewok Village everyone was having a fun party, celebrating with the Ewoks around the bonfire. Lando arrived, being received by Han with a big hug
"Lando!"
"Han, my friend. I told you I would bring her back"
"I'm glad you are all alright" Han smiled
"Hey Chewie" Lando laughed as the Wookie hugged him.
The pilots and the squad were hugging themselves.
Luke and Ines arrived at the village. Once Leia saw her brother they went towards each other and hugged themselves. She was relief that her brother was alright. As Luke walked towards Han and hugged his friend, Ines and Leia hugged each other
"I'm so glad you are alright" Leia told her best friend.
"Hey kid, I was worried about you" Han told her making Ines smiled at him
"Come here" she said and pulled Han into a hug. "I'm fine. We are fine." then she spot Lando "Hello Lando. I'm glad you all came out alive. For a moment I thought everything was lost"
"We did too"
Ines smiled and hugged him too.
"You are a good guy Lando"
"Thanks Ines. I found out about your condition" he said looking at her belly, making Ines smiling as she rest her hand on top of it "I'm happy for you and Luke"
"Thanks Lando" she said as she turned and saw him.
Luke was walking away from the bonfire, looking at it, seeing everyone having a great time celebrating. He looked at Ines who was talking to Lando. He smiled when he saw her resting her hand on her belly. Looking to his right he smiled when saw the Force Ghost of Ben and Master Yoda, and then a new one appeared by their side. It was his father? He smiled at it. He was not alone.
Leia appeared behind him and the twins looked at each other
"What are you doing here? Come to the party"
Luke smiled and wrapping his arms around his sister's waist they walked towards the party. Looking at Ines, he knew it was time.
Seeing Wedge having a talk to another pilot he went towards him.
"Wedge"
"Luke" the two men hugged.
"I need a favor" Luke asked him
"What is it?"
Pulling Wedge aside, Luke started to explain to him what he had in mind. Wedge smile and nodding he replied
"Leave that to us" and he using his comlink he started to talk on it.
"Thanks" Luke replied and walked to Han, Leia, Ines and Lando.
"So you were with Luke all this time? How did they took you?" Han asked
"They drugged her" Luke answered him, wrapping his right arm around Ines shoulders "My heart fell when I walked in that shuttle and saw her there, laying."
"Well everything went well. I'm fine. Nothing bad happened." she smiled at them.
Luke looked to his left and saw Wedge giving him the thumbs up. With a nod, he talked towards his friends.
"Can I borrow her for a moment. I promise she will come back and tell everything about what happened up there, but right now I need to do something"
"Do something?" Han asked raising his eyebrows
"Really Han?" Luke shook his head laughing as he grabbed Ines hand and pulled her away from the party.
"Where are you taking me?" she asked him
"You will see" he smiled as he continue to walk towards the edge of the village, where they could see the perfect sky filled with stars.
"This place is perfect" he said, stopping there and pulling her into his arms, making her face him.
Ines didn't understand why Luke took her from the party to a place where they were clearly under the stars. The fireworks continue to illuminate the sky.
Right now they had their arms around each other bodies, facing each other.
"Luke why are we here?" she asked him.
"I want to be alone with you for a while. Just the two of us, well the three of us." he smiled widely making Ines smile too. He had a mystery look.
"What?"
"4 years ago, I was just a farm boy, in Tatooine, living with my uncle and aunt, helping my uncle Owen in the farm. But my head was away, in the sky. I wanted to be a pilot. I even wrote myself in the Academy the year we met. I was upset with my Uncle that he was trying to keep one more year in the farm."
Ines smiled at that. She never met Luke's aunt and uncle. She wished she would, so she could thank them for raise him. But she was not understanding why he was telling her that. But she felt it was important.
"When I met you, I thought you were very beautiful. And very independent, specially for an 18 years old girl."
"Well I had a different life than you"
"True." he nod laughing "What I want to say, you were so different from the girls I met back in Tatooine. You were a strong young woman, who was not afraid to mouth back to Han" they laughed at that. "I could never imagine that girl, I met back in Mos Eisley, would be the girl who stole my heart and 4 years later would be caring my child" he said resting his hand on her cheek.
"I couldn't imagine either. It looked like it was so long ago but also like it was yesterday at the same time"
"When you said that you didn't know what the future would bring now, I knew for a year, that my future would be with you. We were meant to be together before we were born, and that is what I want to do, to be with you for the rest of my life"
"I'm not going anywhere Luke."
"I know. Ines, I love you like I never thought I could love anyone. You are the mother of my child, now what I want to ask you is, will you be my wife?"
Ines gasped
"Luke are you asking me too…" she couldn't believe he asked her that. It was something she never thought, until now.
"Look up" he told her and looking up, she saw that some of the fireworks had written in the sky
"WILL YOU MARRY ME?"
Ines looked up and tears started to roll down her face
"Damn pregnancy hormones" she said making Luke laughed.
"You didn't answer my question, yet"
Looking at him, Ines smiled.
"Yes. I will marry you Luke."
Smiling he pulled into a deep kiss, pulling her closer. Right now he was the happiest guy in the galaxy. Pulling apart he picked her up and spin her around making her laughed.
"Luke I'm going to get dizzy" she laughed looking down at him
"I love you" he smiled
"I love you too. And I think everyone saw that proposal"
"Good. When I get a chance I will buy an engagement ring" he told her putting her down.
"We need to marry before this little one starts to get bigger" she smiled looking at her belly, and gasped when Luke kneel in front of her and pulling her shirt up he kissed her belly. It was the first time he did that. Running her fingers through his blond hair, she smiled. She was the happiest girl in the galaxy right now and soon she would be his, officially, and she couldn't wait.
