Chapter 36: The Quidditch World Cup
It was Sunday and Kiba had just finished packing his trunk and shoulder-hung bag for the Hogwarts year ahead. As promised he was set to visit the weasley's for the last month of summer. "the fireplace is ready, Master Kiba" Kreacher said as he entered the room.
"Thank you Kreacher" Kiba replied "you don't have to call me Master" he added with a smile. Kreacher snapped his fingers and Kiba's trunk along with his bag and Owl-cage levitated off the ground and made their way downstairs to the large fireplace in the Parlour room. Kreacher was already there and the fire was burning brightly, Kreacher reached for some powder he had stored in a miniature cauldron and tossed it into the flames turning them bright green. "I'll miss you, Kreacher"
"Kreacher will still be here to serve you once you return" he replied "have a good term, Master" Kiba smiled and made sure here had everything with him. His bag hung from his shoulder, his trunk in his right hand and Kuzon in his cage in his left as Hotaru hid herself in the chest pocket of his shirt.
"Here goes" Kiba stepped into the flames prepared to travel by the Flu network for the first time in his life "The Burrow" he said and immediately everything began spinning as the emerald flames engulfed him. He ducked and tried to make out if he could step out. He saw a wooden wall opposite to him and took a step and then another. He straightened up once he was out of the fireplace and saw two young men sitting at a Table.
"Ah, Kiba. Welcome to our home" said a soft yet warm female voice from behind him. Somebody else had appeared from the fireplace with bags full of food. She put down the bags and embraced the boy "how good to see you, are you alright?"
"I'm alright, Missus Weasley" Kiba replied
"oh please, call me Molly." She answered as she picked up the bags and headed for the kitchen "Arthur should be back with Harry any minute" she called back. But before Kiba could do anything else Hermione came running around the corner jumping into Kiba's arms almost sending him to the ground.
"um, Hermione?" Kiba asked after the girl refused to let go of him "are you alright?"
"I'm fine" she replied with a giggle "I'm just happy to see you again" Hermione finally let go of Kiba when the fire beside then roared and out stepped one of the twins. Kiba still had difficulty telling them apart since they did tend to dress the same and purposely tried to confuse their family and friends to the point that even their mother would sometimes not know. It didn't take long for the fire to flare again as the second twin stepped out with a trunk soon followed by Ron and then a grinning Harry. Fred and George pulled Harry out of the fireplace.
"Did he eat it?" asked Fred excitedly
"Please say yes!" added George. Harry simply nodded the smile not fading from his face. The two oldest Weasley brothers joined them and greeted Harry and Kiba. Kiba first met Bill, Bill had long hair that was tied tightly in a bun and he also had some sort is tooth hanging from his ear. This was the Weasley that worked for the bank, afterwards Bill went to Harry and Charlie shook Kiba's hand. Charlie was smaller than Bill and even the twins were taller then him, but he was well built unlike any Weasley. His shoulders were wide, his arms big and a shiny burn was on one of them. His face adorned a scar on the cheek and a beard.
"now Kiba," Charlie said "Ron said you have a dragon of your own. Any chance I'd get to meet it?" Kiba looked down to his chest and opened his chest pocket. Hotaru poked her head out almost immediately.
"Hotaru, meet Charlie Weasley" Kiba said, Hotaru leaped from the pocket and landed on Charlie's hand sniffing it. The smile that formed in Charlie's face was indescribable, as he gently lifted Hotaru's wings and asked her to show her teeth.
"She's gorgeous, she is" he said
"you should see her when she gets big"
"She changes size?"
"She can, though it's difficult and requires allot of her energy"
"amazing. Does she breathe fire yet?" he asked checking inside her mouth
"not yet, she said soon"
"young i see, i reckon four years?"
'four and a half' Hotaru said proudly
"four and a half, according to her" Kiba replied "i can understand animals, like people" Kiba quickly added as he saw Charlie's confused expression
"did she shed yet?" Charlie asked once more
"not that i know of"
"trust me, you'd know" Charlie replied as he watched Hotaru fly "when young dragons grow, they shed their scales to grow before the new ones form and Harden. Those scales are used for safety gloves and boots, i'd recon hers would go for a pretty price"
"she's a Dutch Wolf Dragon, they don't grow much. I don't think they shed their scales at all since they can also grow at will"
"right. Makes sense," Charlie said thoughtfully "fascinating" he added in a whisper
Kiba was suddenly pulled away by Hermione who told him they were headed to Ron's room. Kiba and Charlie had completely missed what had happened, one of the twins had apparently tested a candy on Harry's cousin Dudley and were now in deep trouble with their mother. Kiba dragged his things up the stairs inside the oddly shaped building to the very top where Ron's room was. The house looked like a normal house where room after room was added ontop. As they sat down in Ron's room Kiba got a good look at his friends, both Harry and Ron had let their hair grow out a bit, though Harry's looked much less untidy then it had ever done, and Hermione was, much like last year, taming her brown mane more and more though it seemed she still struggled. Kiba himself had let his hair grow a bit too, now when he brushed it back out would fall just to his shoulders at which point his usually sleek and straight red hair would start turning into right curls, something that Hermione, as she admitted, thought looked quite good on the boy. Ron's room was covered in orange posters of his favorite quidditch team, the Chudley Cannons which zoomed from one poster to the next, there was a glass aquarium in the window sill and two bunk-beds along with Ron's regular bed. "Fred and George are sleeping here as well, Charlie and Bill are in their room since Percy needs his privacy to work" Ron explained. Harry tossed his bag to the top bed looking at Kiba, shrugged tossed his own to the bottom bunk.
"What are Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes?" Harry asked once the door was closed behind them.
"well, we've been hearing explosions from Fred and George's room. We're never thought much of it, but mom found all these formulas labeled 'Weasley's Wizard Wheezes' and they had designed candies that have different effects" Ron explained
"like swelling my cousins' tongue?"
"yes" Ron added "mum was furious with them, since they told her their ambition was to open a joke shop. They even said they'd start selling at Hogwarts so she burned all the order forms"
'I'm ready to fly, do you have a letter for me to deliver? I know i can do it' Kiba heard a voice squeak beside him. In a small cage was the tiny owl that Sirius had bestowed to Ron.
"shut up, Pig" Ron said quickly
"why do you call him that?" asked Ginny angrily
"it's his name" Ron replied "you named him remember?"
'I'm Pigwidgeon' the owl hooted
"but his name is Pigwidgeon" Ginny said "you're calling him Pig"
"He responds to it, so what" Ron said "he annoys me, and i have to keep him in my room because he annoys Errol and Hermes too" Ron added towards his three friends.
"Where is Crookshanks?" Kiba asked Hermione as he watched her caress Hotaru's belly with her finger.
"in the garden i reckon" she replied "he's hunting the gnomes, he's never seen any before" silence fell over the group
"So," Harry began attempting to break the silence "Percy is finished with school, what's he doing?"
"He's working in the ministry. Every day i have to hear him spit out some gibberish" Ron said "he works for a man named Crouch, always talking about 'Mister Crouch thinks… Mister Crouch believes… it's like Mister Crouch said… Mister Crouch told me..' it's quite annoying"
"im sure he's only kissing up to his boss" said Ginny "he told me that he doesn't want to get stuck without promotion like dad"
"Ginny! Don't say that" shouted Ron almost loud enough for the entire house to hear "anyways, Harry. Have you heard from-"
"I'm sure they've stopped arguing" Hermione interrupted him knowing that he almost revealed that they had helped Black escape. And Hermione, who had become good friends with Ginny, knew that the girl wasn't particularly good at holding her tongue. "we should go down and see if we can help Mrs Weasley" the four friends and Ginny made their way down the staircase where a still fuming Missus Weasley instructed them that they were eating out in the garden. They got busy immediately setting the table with plates, silverware and soon the finished dishes.
Mrs Weasley had cooked several courses of food beginning with a large salad, homemade bruchetta followed by salmon, backed tomatoes and a delicious sauce. Kiba was sitting at the end of the table with Charlie at the head to his right, Hermione beside him to his left and Bill across from him.
"So Perce" began Mister Weasley "how are things at work?"
"Very busy," answered Percy "the department has been overrun with the preparations for the world cup. And Ludo Bagman from the department of magical games and sports isn't doing much to help either"
"i like Ludo," replied Mister Weasley "he got me these amazing tickets"
"that may be, but, have you heard of Bertha Jorkins?" Percy asked "she's one of his colleagues, and she's been missing for weeks. Bagman doesn't care, he says she gets lost frequently and will turn up soon. Mister Crouch would never let his colleagues go missing, if it were up to him he'd go looking for her"
"I'm sure he's got lots to do, Perce" said Mister Weasley
"Not as much as Mister Crouch," replied Percy "he doesn't just have the world cup to organize. We've got that other big thing coming up, you know which one i mean father" he added a little louder, looking down the table towards Harry seemingly begging him to ask. Ron groaned quietly and rolled his eyes
"don't ask him about it, he's just trying to seem superior because he knows something we don't"
"who cares about some secret event anyways?" Charlie chimed in "the world cup is still ahead of us, who do you think will win?"
"I'm with Ireland, any day" Bill said "through experience alone"
"Bulgaria's players might be younger, but they've got the best seeker in the world in their side, no way Ireland catches the snitch before krum does"
"Agreed" said Fred and George
"I'm just sad that England were knocked out" Kiba listened to them talk absently as he enjoyed the delicious food and the calming family atmosphere beneath the darkening sky. Once everyone had finished their main course Missus Weasley brought out a large bowl of homemade strawberry pudding.
"So," Ron began after he checked that the cost was clear. Bill and Charlie had moved to the other side of the table leaving the four to themselves "heard from Black lately?"
"Twice" answered Harry "he's alright, and Buckbeak is in safe hands. He might send an owl while im here"
"oh, look at the time" Missus Weasley blurted out "you best be off to bed, long day ahead. Oh and Harry, Kiba leave your lists out, im heading to Diagon Alley tomorrow"
"thank you, Missus Weasley" the two boys replied immediately. They headed up to their beds leaving Percy, Charlie, Bill as well as Mister and Missus Weasley to clean up. They were in their beds and asleep within the hour.
Mrs Weasley made her round early the next morning to wake everyone and serving breakfast downstairs. Kiba and Harry were the first downstairs followed by Ron and the twins shortly after. "humph" huffed Ron as he sat down "i thought Percy would be up by now"
"unlike you, Percy is apparating, dear" replied his mother "as are Bill and Charlie"
"Apparating?" asked Harry quickly
"Apparation; it's a form of magical travel. It allows you to travel from your current location to one you Invision, it's like the flu network, just.. less restricted" Mr Weasley replied
"it's didn't require a linked network and a fireplace," Fred added
"just requires magic and a little brain" George chimed in.
"why don't we travel that way?" Harry Questioned "it can't be that hard, right?"
"Actually, it's much harder then you think" Said Mr. Weasley "you will learn it at school and need to pass a test to be allowed to use it. Get cought without an Apparation license and you'll pay a big fine" Mrs Weasley explained
"can't have Wizards apparating all over the place," Mr Weasley added jokingly "it's quite dangerous too. If you don't do it right you'll leave body parts behind. I remember a story where a young Wizards had left both his hands behind... oh, And don't even try to travel with many others, anything goes wrong and you'll get splinched and take permanent damage" Ginny and Hermione now joined the table too looking much more awake then the boys.
"How are we going then? Surely were not gonna walk all the way" Kiba noted
"it's a short walk, just to the Po-"
"Fred! What do i see in your pocket?! Is that?!" Mrs Weasley suddenly burst out on a fit of anger as more and more Toffees poured from Fred and George's pockets. She used the summoning charm Accio and found more and more Toffees in all sorts of unlikely places. After a good scolding Mrs Weasley sent them all off "have a lovely stay, and behave yourself!" she called after them as they began walking.
"where are we going exactly?" asked Hermione after a short while.
"the Portkey is just behind that village and up the hill" Mr Weasley said
"Portkey?" echoed Harry
"well, I'll explain" Mr Weasley said as he waited so he could walk beside Harry and Hermione "now, for the ministry, organizing an event such as the Quidditch World cup is a nightmare. Not only do you have to fit hundreds of thousands of wizard in one spot, you'll have to make sure the muggles don't suspect a thing. So, we find a hill surrounded by a large moor. Perfect, right? Well, it wasn't enough according to the calculation. So the ministry rented out every camping ground in the area to fit enough space for everyone. Now those are owned by muggles of course, so everyone was advised to 'fit in'. now the stadium itself is hidden within the mountain and the entire moor was covered with anti-muggle charms"
"Anti-muggle?" Kiba asked
"for instance, if a Muggle were to walk into the area they would suddenly remember an important appointment and rush home. Hogwarts is protected similarly. Makes the castle look like a ruin to the muggles, listed with signs telling them to stay away. Quite ingenious actually" Mr Weasley paused "back to topic. So, how do you get hundreds of thousands of Wizards to one spot? We can't let everyone apparate freely, the chance of catastrophy was to high, so the ministry set up designated arriving spots and times, so there would be no collision dangers. Everyone was asked to apparate on their own and the rest were assigned Portkey's"
"what's a Portkey?" Harry asked
"it's an object enchanted to transport you to a pre-determined spot at a pre-determined time" Kiba explained "they work very similarly to Apparation, it just requires payment"
"Yes," Mr Weasley said "ours is paid for with the tickets. And since Portkey's are usually hidden among muggles or near villages and cities they are inconspicuous. It had to be something that wouldn't seem out of place, and wouldn't be accidentally touched by a Muggle"
The group kept their magic talk to a minimum as they walked through the village and up the hill. "alright children" Mr Weasley said once they reached the top "we've got ten minutes, start searching"
"Arthur!" a voice suddenly called out to them. "over here, we've found it already!"
"ah, come on everyone" they followed Mr Weasley to the Wizard that stood near a manky old boot "this, is Amos Diggory! He works at the ministry, in the department of regulation and control of magical creatures"
"Please to meet you!" he said "all yours Arthur?" the man asked
"just the Redheads," Arthur said "except this one" he placed his hand on Kiba's shoulder "Kiba Scamander." Mr Diggory raised an eyebrow as he looked at the boy "He's a friend of Ron's, just like Hermione Granger and –"
"Harry!" Cedric had gotten to them and greeted them all with a bright smile.
"Harry Potter?" Mr Diggory echoed his son. He reached out to Harry and shook his hand. "never thought I'd get to meet you" he added excitedly.
The two men talked among themselves. Hermione and Ginny were sharing a story, Fred and George are seemingly trying to convince Ron to eat something and Cedric had stepped over to Harry and Kiba "had a good summer?" he asked them
"same old," Harry replied "cut off from everything, as always"
"you?" Kiba asked trying to avoid answering
"quite good actually," Cedric replied "went to this muggle theme park, it was really exhilarating. My dad thought it'd be a way to show me how proud he was of my OWL scores"
"sounds great" Harry said.
"I was actually meaning to ask you something" he said "my dad let slip that there's something big happening at Hogwarts this year. Any chance you know what it is?"
"not really" Harry replied
"Percy, Ron's brother, wont stop talking about the 'thing'" Kiba added mockingly "but he only wants to be asked about it so he can remind you of the fact that he's been told"
"He hadn't actually told us anything" Harry clarified "we're in the dark"
"Well, i can't imagine what it'll be. I doubt it's a renovation though" the three shared a laugh before Mr Weasley called everyone over.
"everyone, hand on" he said holding up the boot. Kiba stood between Cedric and Hermione as Mr Weasley began to count "Three… Two… one!" suddenly their surroundings began spinning and they felt their hair whip around them and the ground vanished beneath their feet. It didn't take long for them to feel ground beneath them over again, Hermione panicked and let go of the boot and grabbed onto Kiba pulling him away. They fell over together, Kiba landing ontop of the girl, he apologized and got to his feet quickly helping her stand up. They looked around and saw Harry and Ron on the ground too as a man came walking towards them with a large book beneath his arm.
"well, this definitely is easier on your own" Kiba said dusting off his pants.
"Seven past five, from stoutshead hill" a man said as he moved a hand over a floating parchment beside him. "Diggory and Weasley"
"Basil!" Mr Weasley said loudly, he shook the man's hand. The man greeted Mr Weasley and Mr Diggory with equal friendlessness and gave them directions to their rented spaces.
"well, enjoy the final" Cedric said to Kiba and Harry who he had one again decided to talk to
"you too, Cedric" Harry replied "see you at school" he added
"yeah, see you around" Kiba said. He smiled at them and walked after his father.
"Kiba, Harry! Come on" Mr Weasley called out as the two boys went running back to them. They set off across the moor for right twenty minutes as hundreds of tent-tops cave into view stretching up a slope towards the edge of a forest. They entered the camping ground and were approached by a man who introduced himself as Mister Roberts, unlike many of the wizards walking around trying to look like muggles, this man looked like a Muggle. Like a genuine muggle. "yes, we have a reservation. Weasley's the name"
"Reservation, don't have many of those usually. Not these past days though," the man said flipping through the book he was holding "people tend to just walk on and demand a spot, but now, everythings booked. Odd that is, is like there's some big secret ral-" a man suddenly appeared from thin air his wand pointed at the man's head as he muttered a spell.
"Obliviate" he sighed and took the book from the man "sorry about that, Arthur" he said "he keeps getting onto us, had to Obliviate him every ten minutes for the last hour"
"it's alright, most of us do stand out a bit"
"Follow me please" he lead them all up the slope to the edge of the forest and then to the left where a sign was handled into the grass with the name 'Wheezly' written on it "I'm very exhausted," Kiba heard the man say to Mr Weasley "and frustrated. Ludo Bagman isn't doing anything really, when he should be here overseeing everything. Nonetheless, i do hope you enjoy the match tonight"
"thank you, let's cheer for Ireland, yeah?"
"definitely" the man disappeared again as far as he had originally appeared and they got to setting up their tent. Mr Weasley insisted on doing it like the muggles would asking Hermione, Harry and Kiba lead them on but it ended up being Hermione only since neither Harry nor Kiba had ever been camping and never had even attempted to set up a tent. And after a little while they were done. The tent didn't look large, it was barely taller then Mr Weasley but once they entered it their eyes widened. In the inside the tent was furnished and fitted with a fully functioning system, three bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room and a living room with comfortable chairs and a small fireplace.
"home sweet home, girls you two have the bedroom on the right, boys to the left" Hermione and Ginny ran to the right bedroom and dumped their bags into the beds as Kiba headed to the one on the left. There were five beds in this one and four in the one Arthur was headed too. The boys dumped their bags as well and returned to the living room.
"Get out if the kitchen Ron, we're all hungry!" Mr Weasley said loudly.
"yeah, get out of the kitchen!" the twins echoed as they say down at the dining table and put their feet up
"feet off the table!" Mr Weasley told them
"feet off the table!" they echoed once more putting their feet down until their father looked away so they could put them up again.
"alright, who wants to go get some water for us?" Mr Weasley asked and after a short debate the quartet of friends decided to go. They wandered through the grounds passing tents topped with shamrock and Irish flags among which was their classmate Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas who had come together with Seamus's family. They promised to cheer for Ireland and moved on and soon they passed tents in a deep red color, sporting banners of the bulgarian seeker Victor Krum who looked grumpy on every single one.
"His eyes seem a bit.."
"He's the youngest professional player" Ron interrupted Hermione "and to top it off, the best seeker in the world" they reached the long line at the water tap and Kiba took a closer look at the disguised wizards when he spotted one wearing a woman's nightgown with flower motive.
"Archie! What are you wearing?" someone shouted as he ran up to the man
"what? We were told to fit in" Archie replied
"fit in? Is that what you're doing" the other asked quieter to not raise any more suspicion
"muggles wear this" Archie said
"muggle woman, yes, they wear this to bed!" the other replied alarmingly
"i don't care!" Archie said proudly "i enjoy the breeze around my privates" he added. Hermione couldn't contain herself and had to laugh, she tried to hide it as she walked away a bit to giggle quietly.
As the four made their way back through the campsite they met more familiar faces like Oliver wood, Ernie MacMillan and Cho Chang but they also encountered a large group of similarly aged Wizards that didn't go to Hogwarts. Ron hastily explained that there were wizarding schools in other countries. "Bill once had a pen pal in Brazil" he added. Kiba then remembered his book 'Every spell in History' from Flourish and Blotts, with every listed spell came a short history lesson. Every spell ever created had a reason, a purpose, and along with it's original intended use the country of origin was always listed. They finally reached the tent whilst Mr Weasley was still struggling with his matches, but with some help from Hermione and Kiba they managed to get some food ready and they headed outside to eat it.
As they ate Mr Weasley explained the different departments within the Ministry and their purpose to Harry, Hermione and Kiba. It wasn't long after they changed the subject that Percy, Charlie and Bill finally arrived just minutes before a man in yellow quidditch robes that seemed to tight around the belly. The robes had a logo on it, a black and yellow wasp. He looked like he had been well built once, but had gained weight throughout retirement from Quidditch. "Hello Arthur" he greeted
"Everyone, this is Ludo Bagman. He was generous enough to procure the tickets for us"
"Don't sweat it, I'm here to collect bets, have any?" Before Mr Weasley could answer Fred and George jumped between the two holding out their hands.
"Thirty-seven Galleons Fifteen Sickles and Three Knuts" they said in unison
"alright, what's your bet?"
"Fred, George. I can't let you do this, if your mother found out-" the son's ignored their father and smiled at Ludo
"Ireland will win" Fred said
"and Krum will catch the snitch" George added
"are your sure?"
"So sure that we'll add this joke-wand to the bet"
"Mhhm, I'll take the wand and add five Galleons to your bet, let me just" Ludo pulled out five Galleons and exchanged then with the wand which turned into a cotton mouse on his touch causing him to burst out laughing. "what are your names?"
"Fred and" George said
"George Weasley" Fred added. Ludo pulled a large book from his bag and noted down their names, the value of their bet and their prediction and stuffed the book into his bag along with the wand.
"so Ludo, how's everything going so far?"
"quite well, I've been looking for Barty Crouch. I need some help with a Bulgarian. I'm sure he can sort it out. Barty, reckon he speaks a hundred languages"
"Mr. Crouch?" chimed in Percy "He speaks over two hundred" There was a pause before Mr Weasley spoke again
"any news on Bertha Jorkins, Ludo?"
"Nothin' I've heard. She gets lost all the time, i reckon she'll be back soon. She got a mind like a leaky cauldron i tell ya.. poor old Bertha" Ludo responded
"don't you think you should send someone to look for her?"
"Barty keeps saying that," Ludo added "we can't spare anyone at the moment"
"Bagman" a voice suddenly said near them
"speak of the devil. Barty!" the wizard had just appeared by them. He was a very stiff and upright man in suit and tie, he was old but had a almost unnatural perfect parting in his short gray hair and a thin mustache just above his lip. His shoes were polished and shined. Had a Muggle seen him they surely wouldn't think him any different then themselves.
"Have you been here all this time? I've been looking for you. The bulgarians are insisting we put another twelve seats in the top box"
"so that's what he said" Ludo replied "thought he was asking for a pair of tweezers, he's got a strong accent"
"Mr. Crouch!" Percy jumped over to the man and bowed down. "would you like a cup of tea?"
"oh, yes – thank you, weatherbe" Crouch said mildly surprised. Fred and George looked at Percy with great smiles. Knowing how high Percy praised Mr. Crouch yet he didn't know his name at all.
"you've been busy, i expect" Mr Weasley said politely
"quite," Crouch replied "organizing Portkey's across six continents is no small thing."
"You'll be glad when it's all over then?"
"Are you kidding?" chimed in Ludo "this is the most fun I've had in years, and it's not like we have nothing to do afterwards. There plenty to organize, eh, Barty? Plenty to figure out"
"Nothing's final yet, Bagman, and we agreed on no announcements before all the details are-"
"ah, details!" he said waving away the word "they've signed haven't they, and it's not like they won't know soon enough, it's happening all over-"
"Ludo, we need to go see the bulgarians" Crouch said as his entire body tensed for a second. Ludo got to his feet slowly and waved at all of them
"we'll see you later" he said "your with me in the top box, I'm commentating!" the Weasley's as well as Harry, Hermione and Kiba waved back before Ron turned to his father
"what's happening dad?"
"you'll find out soon enough, first day of term i expect" Mr Weasley replied
"it's need to know anyways," Percy added "Mr Crouch was right not to disclose anything"
"oh, shut up, weatherbe!" Fred and George said breaking out into laughter.
Dusk began setting in as salesmen flooded the grounds. They all headed to their carts to inspect their stock. Kiba ended up buying Omnioculars, a dancing leprechaun with a shamrock hat and a small green finger hat which he placed on Hotaru's head as she curiously peeked out of Kiba's pocket. The lanterns on either side if the main road suddenly lit up however, in flames of green and red to light the way to the stadium. With their pockets lighter from their purchases it was finally find. The Quidditch world cup was about to begin!
