Sinbad was getting restless waiting to heal. He and Flynn needed to leave immediately. Their father had no reason to come to Corona; but, even with a whole other kingdom between them, Syracuse was far too close. Of course, their father could have already left Syracuse for Tortuga and may not even be anywhere near them. Without knowing, Sinbad felt as if he were a sitting duck in this bed.
Sinbad had been so elated to see Phoebus last night, that he hadn't even fully registered that Flynn was here, too, and not on the ship in the Southern Isles. A little bit ago, Sinbad had told Flynn about their father going to Tortuga to find them. They were both in agreement that they were going to find him first and kill him. Flynn just left to find Meg to make sure the two of them would still be welcomed on The Damned after everything so they could go to Tortuga with the crew. Sinbad would get his revenge on Meg after she got him to Tortuga.
The door to his room opened and John walked in. He scowled at Sinbad as he closed the door behind him. "You're leaving your door unlocked?" John scolded.
Sinbad repositioned himself so he was sitting up. "I can't get out of bed to answer the door. At least, not without a lot of pain."
John's scowl only deepened. "Which means if someone were to break into your room, you wouldn't be able to defend yourself."
"Maybe you should stay in here with me and be my guard." Sinbad winked at him.
"Lock your door."
Sinbad smirked at him. "Do you worry about me, John Smith?" he teased.
"More than I'd like." John crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall next to the door. "I heard Flynn asking Meg about the two of you staying with the crew."
Sinbad shook his head. "I'm not. I just need to get back to Tortuga."
John nodded as if he had expected that answer. "What do you plan to do once you get back?"
Sinbad couldn't tell John about his father; if he did, John would insist on going with him and that was not an option. "I guess that's up to Fate to decide. Maybe she'll be kind, likely she'll be cruel. We'll just have to roll the dice and see."
John arched his eyebrow. "That sounds cryptic."
Sinbad shrugged. "Going out into the unknown is rarely sunshine and warmth. Especially for men like me."
John studied him. "Are you in some sort of trouble?"
Sinbad shook his head. "You don't have to worry about me. When we get to Tortuga, we'll go our separate ways again."
John exhaled and bit his lower lip. "I don't know how I feel about that."
"Relieved, I imagine."
"Not exactly."
Sinbad dropped his teasing act. "I have something I have to do in Tortuga and if that doesn't kill me-"
"Doesn't kill you?" John interrupted. "What exactly do you have to do in Tortuga?"
Sinbad shrugged. "Just an old score to settle. Nothing I can't handle."
"But, it could kill you."
"Anything could kill me, John. You could kill me."
"No, I couldn't."
An involuntary smile pulled at the corner of Sinbad's mouth. "It's nice to know you don't want to kill me. But, under the right circumstances, you could. If I threatened the boy, for example. That day I challenged him on the island, if you hadn't been tied up, you would have killed me to save him."
John nodded. "Without hesitation," he admitted. "But, we've been through a lot together since then. I know you wouldn't do anything like that to me now. And I don't have it in me to ever take your life. You'll have to find someone else to fulfill your death wish."
"I don't have a death wish."
John pushed off the wall and walked over to the bed. "It's too late to lie to me about it, Sinbad. Back on the ship you told me you hoped Kale would cut out your heart. And now you're talking about being killed like it's nothing. I don't know what you have to do on Tortuga, but I know there's a part of you that hopes you don't survive it."
Sinbad lowered his eyes. He never should have opened up to John that night. "There's nothing left for me anywhere, John."
"Nothing? Not Flynn? Or me? Or the pirate you're in love with?"
Sinbad shook his head. He ached just at the mention of Phoebus. Until he was strong enough to move around again, Sinbad couldn't see Phoebus unless Phoebus came to him. He hasn't. Sinbad knew he wouldn't. "I have his heart, but I can't have him."
"It's not like you to give up without a fight."
"He doesn't want me to fight for him. He wants me to forget about him. But, I can't, Johnny. God, I can't," Sinbad said. "I need him. I'd do anything to be with him. He's too afraid to be with me, but he's still the only thing in this world I want."
John tried to give him a reassuring look, but it didn't quite work. "Not being with you is his lost."
Sinbad gave him a sly smile. "Yours, too."
John smiled and shook his head. "We had our time."
Sinbad closed his eyes and leaned back. "He and I never did. He keeps pushing me away."
"Sinbad?" John paused for a moment, hesitating before asking, "Who is it?"
Sinbad didn't answer right away. Was it all right for him to tell other people about them? Or was Phoebus trying to keep it a secret? No. Rapunzel knew, so he must not care if anyone from the crew knew about them. Finally, he replied, "Phoebus."
John blinked at him. "I wasn't expecting that."
Sinbad smiled to himself. "Me neither." He hadn't been expecting anything that's happened since he first saw Phoebus at Granny's. "He's here in Corona, though. He came with Rapunzel and stayed to make sure I was all right."
"He cares about you, then," John stated.
"He says he does. He also says he can't be with me because he's afraid of what's going to happen to me if he is."
"It sounds like he should be more concerned about what's going to happen to you if he isn't."
"I'm not going to kill myself, John."
"No, you'll find someone else to do it for you."
