THIRTY-EIGHT
Sunday evening
When she arrives outside his front door, she is suddenly hesitant, her index finger hovering over the doorbell. Every minute of university – the pain, the betrayals, forbidden desire – dances around her mind.
Perhaps he only said he would see her to be polite? Perhaps he would also call her a bitch?
She knows that she cannot disappoint him just as much as everyone else.
It would break her completely.
Turning around, she wonders whether there are any trains running at this time. Walking away from the house, she doesn't care where it takes her. She just wants to disappear.
Maybe-
"You alright, love?"
The small voice surprises Bella and she spins back around. A petit ginger woman stands in the doorway. She recognises her from the library in town.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I was just…uhm…I don't really know what I was doing."
The woman smiles kindly.
"You're Bella, aren't you?"
"Yes. How did you…?"
"Edward never stops going on about you, said you would pop over at some point. Come inside – it's freezing."
She accepts the woman's offer and steps into Edward's house. She feels nervous, excited, apprehensive. She only hopes that the lady doesn't smell the lingering alcohol on her clothes.
"Is Edward home?"
"Yes, love, he's upstairs. He's probably playing some game. I heard him yelling about something earlier."
"Oh, I can come back later, if that's easier?"
"Don't be silly. Head on up, he'll be happy to see you."
As Bella smiles at the woman, her cheeks begin to burn. She feels awkward with all the times she's had sex in this house without Edward's mum knowing.
"What room is it, Mrs. Cullen?"
"It's the first one on your left, dear," The woman says, giving her another warm smile. "But, please, call me Esme. I know how special you are to Edward. You're practically family in this house."
Well, this update was a long-time coming, wasn't it!
As uni got more hectic, my excitement for this story diminished and I put it on the back-burner for a while until my eagerness disappeared. However, now I'm determined to finish this! Edward and Bella deserve their happily ever after!
