On the good side, whatever seemed to be interfering with the electric wiring of Ozpin's tower seemed to have stopped and had blown up. On the bad side, that had ended well over half an hour ago since the four people went down. Those who were left on the upper level were now experiencing a mixture of boredom and anxiety in the meanwhile.
General Ironwood was still not trusting of the ninjas and kept an eye on them at all times. He, however, kept good to their peaceful intentions and called off the retaining of the team in Atlas and had for Lionheart to stop the assault on the Haven team. Glynda was gone to help and retrieve the out-of-commission teachers on the lower floors while the remaining teens caught on with the ninjas.
"So yeah… sorry about not telling you Penny had those codes. We honestly forgot about her after… you know… ALL that happened" Yang told the ninjas, shame present in her voice and her slightly redder cheeks.
Before any of the ninjas could say anything, however, everyone noticed Ruby's face showing anger and indignation. The subject would have died there and then had it not been for Smoke putting a hand over her shoulder and taking her away. "Look kid, maybe I don't know how betrayed you feel, but holding on to it will not be good for you". She then tried to keep the anger from showing, but it eventually shifted into sadness and a look that asked, 'Then what should I do?'. Smoke thought about it before looking at Ironwood with arms crossed and giving him a death glare. "You said she was close to the General over there, right?". Ruby nodded. "Then we should start with him".
Back with the others, Yang seemed to be on a pun spree after discovering Sub Zero had an appreciation for ice-related ones, as a way to try and lift up the mood. "When did you start being such an 'ice' guy anyway?" she asked when they reached the part about stopping Fujin from shooting Ironwood point-blank.
"Seriously, Xiao Long? Seriously?" Weiss asked with annoyance.
"Oh, come on Weiss, you need to be more 'chill' like scar-face over here!".
At the mention of that nickname again, Sub Zero remembered the woman; and once again he felt there was an uncanny resemblance to Yang. While the blonde girl kept on teasing her friend, Sub Zero looked around for said woman only to find she was gone. He would have gone back to the conversation, but he then noticed the other man that fought them. "Keep an eye on them, I am going to check on something," Sub Zero told Hanzo and Ermac; they nodded, and he went ton to speak with Qrow who was sitting on a concrete chair drinking from his flask.
At first, Qrow ignored the other man. But when Sub Zero would not leave, Qrow then decided to entertain him. "So… about what happened… no hard feelings, ok? You were doing your job; I was doing mine".
"I concur, but that is not why I am here" Sub Zero answered with full honesty.
"Oh… ok… then why bother me?" Qrow asked. It was not his intention to sound rude, but he also preferred the quiet after a fight.
"The woman that fought us…".
"Winter?" Qrow asked, not knowing what he meant.
"No. The other one. The one that looks like you" Sub Zero clarified.
Before speaking again, Qrow took a quick glance at Yang. Fortunately, she was still distracted by her friends. "What about her?" he then asked, not wanting to reveal information that was not asked now, like her name.
"Are you related?".
"Yes… brothers if you are wondering".
"And if I am not mistaken, Yang referred to you as uncle?".
Now Qrow was getting concerned. "And what if I am?".
"I think you know where I am going with this" Kuai Liang said as he crossed his arms over his chest.
Qrow sighed with some annoyance. "You are pretty nosy for a kid your age," he remarked.
"I am older than I look" Sub Zero answered. "If you must know, I fought your sister before. Hanzo and I did".
That did seem to get Qrow's attention. He sighed once again before whispering "Dammit, Raven!".
"My point is that she did not want to confront Yang after our encounter. Even now, she left some time ago".
"Look, it's complicated. I don't want to turn this into storytime, so I'll make it quick: Raven is Yang's mother, she left her when Yang was a baby, and the last thing we need is a family drama, ok?".
As Sub Zero was getting ready to answer, everyone stopped when the doors to the tower opened, and out came the four who went in, alive and walking.
Ren was the first to sprint towards Nora, almost knocking her to the ground in an ironic twist of fate. Everything seemed good until they saw a fifth person emerging from the entrance. RWBY, Jaune, and Ren had absolutely no idea who that man was other than he was important; but everyone else was speechless.
"Lord Raiden?" Smoke managed to ask.
The young man, in turn, looked at Smoke and then at the other ninja with an unexpressive face before smiling and nothing. "Indeed Smoke".
The ninjas did not run; they slowly approached the other man and then knelt before him. "Lord Raiden, if we may… what happened to you?" Ermac asked what everyone was thinking.
"I am not entirely sure myself; but now that I am out…" Raiden began to explain as he admired all around him. What was once an alien world now felt like Earthrealm. He could feel the life force of Remnant's people, the electricity that surrounded him, faint images of places all around the world. "I feel… reborn!". He then looked at Nora, being piled on by her friends. "It is my understanding that my body received energy from her. I believe that once my godly essence mixed with the energy of this world also allowed my body to regenerate in a new form shaped by Remnant".
Whatever it was, there was also not much anyone else could say to refute that theory. The moment of joy was broken however once General Ironwood approached Raiden. The look on his face emanated danger, but Raiden just bowed respectfully and in complete serenity. Before the general could basically rant out his questions, one quick look at Winter's warning face made him reconsider his approach. "Who are you?" he managed to ask in a somewhat calm tone.
"I am Raiden. God of thunder and protector of Earthrealm" the other answered without hesitation or doubt.
A fruitful career in the military helps you develop a stoic face to hide your feelings from the enemy. But even some things are so outrageous that they can break a perfect poker face. "God of… what? Where?". It took him some time to get his ideas in order once again. "There is no such god in any religion and no place named like that in Remnant!".
"I never said Earth was in Remnant, General" Raiden answered, cockily even to the surprise to the ninjas.
"Ok, fine, but what makes you think you are a god?". Ironwood then asked.
Ermac was about to mediate their conversation but was then stopped by Hanzo. "Wait, I want to know where this is going," the yellow ninja said.
"Very well, General. Think of some open place far away that you are familiar with" Raiden offered.
Within seconds, Ironwood was done making his choice. "Done!".
Wasting no time, Raiden then placed a hand on the general's shoulder before raising the other and allowing a lightning bolt to fall on them. As both men were gone, Winter began to panic while the other faculty members looked shocked.
"Winter, Winter, Winter, it's ok, I think they just teleported," Weiss said trying to calm Winter.
"He can do that?" the older Schnee asked while looking at Fujin.
The wind god in turn felt puzzled at someone acting that way to something so mundane to him. "Yes. I can too; but I am still trying to figure out the wind patterns. If I tried, I am sure to get lost away from my desired destination".
As Fujin was done explaining, another lightning hit on the same spot, revealing a speechless Ironwood and Raiden. "The General wanted to see his academy from the roof of his office".
"I… I am… ehem… sorry for the way I acted…" a defeated James Ironwood then said to Raiden, Fujin, and the ninjas.
While some laughs were had, Raiden then quickly approached Ozpin again. "I am sorry, but this meeting must be cut short, headmaster. I must leave to find a warrior that will assist me in defeating Orderrealm".
Surprises and questions did not seem to stop coming towards Ozpin this day. Nevertheless, if it meant one less threat, then he was ready to help. "Very well; is there any way we can help you with this quest?".
"Perhaps you've heard of him, I was told to look for a warrior named-".
Raiden was cut short when an explosion was heard and a piece of wall from the infirmary fell to the ground. Glynda then emerged from the building looking puzzled at what just happened.
"For the love of… What now!?" Qrow yelled.
"Let me make this clear, Frost: I want the boy dead!" Hotaru said through the intercom in Frost's head.
"I know; you already told me that three times before I left!" the blue-haired cyber ninja said as she and two other Tekunin drones were hiding on the outsides of Beacon.
"And I only told you once to dispose of the boy after you were done getting information from him" he then commented.
'Rub it in my face, why don't you?' Frost thought to herself. If there was anything she hated more than failing it was being constantly reminded of her failures. How was she supposed to know aura was able to slow down the poisoning? "Police haven't released his team yet, so he is still out" she explained to him.
"I don't care about that; I just want him gone. Do you know how you will do it?".
"Send the drones in, wait until he is alone, take him out with an overdose of spores, leave. Happy!?" she asked him with annoyance.
"Once he is dead!" Hotaru said one last time before hanging up.
While the perks of joining Sektor once she faked her death were great and the alliance with Onaga promised even better prospects for her, that didn't mean her bosses were not annoying. Maybe she could convince Sektor to overthrow Onaga and the Seidans once the invasion was completed if they didn't change the way they talked to her.
Nevertheless, classes should have already started, and that was the best time to send someone for recognizance with most people being inside offices and classrooms. "You! Get to the medical building. If the opportunity arises, you know what to do" she said as a compartment on her left wrist opened and she took out a vial holding bright aquamarine dust which she then mixed with a saline solution injection and handed it over to the robot. The machine bowed, activated its camouflage, and ran towards the school.
It took a few minutes, but the robot reported back. Frost chuckled, believing that the mission was a success, but the robot reported all but good news. Instead, all he showed her was the building being always guarded by Altesian soldiers. As she was thinking how Hotaru and Sektor would scold her next, the incoming set of videos intrigued her. They might have been using uniforms, they might look like late teenagers, but Cardin had already spelt the beans about Kuai Liang and the other ninjas being at Beacon. Even more interesting: They were doing recognizance around the building.
"Sub Zero, you incompetent prude… what are you all looking for in there…?". She then looked at the other robot. "Go help him cover more ground!" Frost then ordered; and just as before, the robot bowed and headed for the school.
Nothing of interest happened for a long time. One of the Tekunin drones managed to get inside the building and even got to the upper floors, but the resting area was well off-limits with only a handful of people being able to enter. The other kept a close eye on the ninjas; but other than doing sightseeing of their own, there was not much.
Before afternoon arrived, Frost was intrigued by a technician's cart that entered the room and the left with twice the equipment and a heavy security scheme. Most interesting of all, it was done after Smoke returned from his patrolling. Did the Beacon personnel know about what the ninjas were doing?
Whatever the case, she noticed how security had finally relaxed. "Move now!" she ordered the drone patrolling the medical building; but as he slowly got closer to the fifth floor, a message from the intercom stopped their plan.
'Attention all students: We have received information about trespassers on campus. Every student is to head back to his or her dormitory immediately; all who are found breaking this mandatory curfew will face immediate expulsion. You have ten minutes. That is all.
"Both of you stop whatever you are doing!" She almost roared. It made no sense that Beacon had been able to discover them, but she was not willing to risk it. Both robots remained still until Frost was able to see what the one looking at ninjas saw: A constant patrol on the ninjas' room. "Thank the Elder Gods…" she breathed out, but before the drone at the medical building could go up again, Frost was able to see Beacon's headmaster and a group of both known and unknown associates heading to her objective.
"Shit! Get out of there!" she ordered with just enough time before the entire building entered in lockdown. Her drone managed to escape because of a slightly opened window in a broom closet on the second floor. She was ready to call both back to her and go over a new strategy but then saw as security began to move as the ninjas also moved towards her target. Sub Zero might have been a lousy teacher, but she did get to learn a thing or two with him; among others was that the best time to attack your opponent was when he was already distracted fighting another enemy. "Like fishing in a troubled river", she commented to herself. "Meet me behind the classroom building!" was the last order she gave before heading to Beacon herself.
Frost arrived just as the battle on the fifth floor began. 'Too much for a silent retrieve' she thought from her hiding place. As she then considered her strategy, she then saw a group of kids running and then discussing something. Frost would be lying if she said there was not a bit of curiosity as to what they were talking about, but she had to get her eyes on the target.
Her concentration was then broken when an alarm window appeared in front of her. "What do you want!?" she asked the Tekunin who activated the alarm.
"Wind current is exponentially growing stronger. Mission success rate is decreasing by zero-point twenty-four percent with every-".
"It's just a gush of wind, you useless drone! How bad could it-". She saw him only for a fraction of a second, but that was enough for her to be beyond confused. 'Fujin? Here?' was all her mind was able to ask as the wind current pushed her and the other robots against the wall. To say things were getting interesting by the moment would be an understatement.
After two of the kids propelled themselves into the top floor and the battle at the ground ended, Frost saw everyone leave the building and then Fujin headed with three others to the main tower which was now shaking. With everyone down, she then decided to make her move and ordered the drones to climb the wall and show her whatever they were seeing as she stood opposite to where everyone was gathered and kept an eye on them.
The aftermath of their battle was not that impressive. Her first field mission had ended with the disembodied corpses of a street gang over an indoor basketball court, but a fierce fight had taken place, nonetheless. Even better, the door was now torn apart and the Tekunin had free entrance.
The main room was the complete opposite to the hall; save for a few medical gear, papers, and blankets, everything looked normal. And over to the left, there he was: Cardin Winchester. Even better, he had an intravenous line. Everything was going great, the dose was ten times what she gave him the other night, even his aura wouldn't save him now!
The robot then took out the syringe and was ready to pierce it through the saline bag; but just before penetrating it, a loud clank was heard, and the signal had a momentary interference. "What the-!?" she asked with shock, and as the image cleared, she was then able to see the source of the attack: a blond monkey faunus holding an IV pole like a baseball bat. At that moment she lost it. "Kill them both now!" Frost ordered, "I don't care how just do it!".
Sun's confidence fell to the floor when he went for another swing, but the machine just moved away from the trajectory and then switched its arms to buzz-saws which he then used to cut the pole in half. He jumped back as to not suffer the same fate and saw with panic as the other robot recovered the syringe and headed towards Cardin.
Sun was never much of a believer, but that sword that came out of nowhere and got stuck on the robot's forearm might as well have been a gift from the heavens. When he turned around to see Cardin's savior, he saw a woman wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, and black boots, while her face was covered by a surgical mask, and her hair was under a bouffant cap.
-Moments earlier-
Raven sat atop the medical building and looking at the broken moon, just considering everything that happened. It's not like she didn't care what was happening down there, but her daughter finding out about her was not in her interests. 'You can't run away from her forever…'. Glynda's words kept repeating themselves over and over; but when would that moment be? Honestly, at this point in her life, it would be better if Yang never got to know her; she had already gotten this far. 'But then I'd have to listen to Tai yapping about it' she thought, and then it hit her. She did want a second chance with Tai… and just maybe… a second chance with her daughter might be possible?
She was taken out of her thoughts as faint thumping and stone-cracking noises came from the wall behind her. Quickly glancing over at the others, she saw the same people as just before. She then turned into a corvid and flew next to the wall, noticing the cracks that headed towards the broken window. Worried, she then headed for the floor and saw as from out of nowhere robots like the ones that attacked the tribe appeared and entered the room. She could have gone to ask for help, but she was worried that by the time they got back, the robots would have done whatever they came to do.
Once both robots were inside the room, Raven quickly turned back and grabbed whatever she could to hide her face. The last thing she needed was for Seido to know she was still alive. As she placed a face mask and a bouffant cap on, she then got next to the door frame and peeked inside. For better or worse, their target didn't seem to be the 'Rayden' guy, but the poisoned school bully. She then saw as they grabbed a syringe, and just as she was ready to intervene, the monkey faunus on the other bed sprung to life, grabbed an empty IV pole, and then smacked the robot holding the injection. 'He has balls. Half a brain cell, but balls' Raven considered as what she then expected to happen, happened. But before the robot could apply the lethal injection, she threw her sword and hurt her opponent. She then made her presence known to everyone as she entered; but before they could react, she ran towards the syringe, grabbed it, and broke the needle against the wall.
The robot then switched its functioning arm to a blade and charged towards Raven. Sun was also taken out of his amazement when his robot charged at him with buzz-saws activated.
Raven dodged two swings of the light blade before jumping over the robot, retrieving her sword and then kicking it on the head. The machine then recovered and quickly jumped in the air to deliver a powerful vertical slash.
As Raven locked swords with the robot, she was able to see Sun jumping and throwing stuff at the other. 'Good, he is keeping it distracted from its target. No weapon, so he has a limited number of things to use'. An idea then popped into her head; it was risky but worth it. She then kicked her rival towards the curtains, burying him under the curtains. Sun, on his part, got cornered against a wall, but just as the robot went to slash him, Sun squatted, and the saws got stuck on the wall.
"Kid! Duck!" Raven yelled. Sun rolled out of the way, and before he could question what she was about to do, she threw a fireball that incinerated the robot but also managed to break the wall.
The remaining robot then managed to free itself and changed its arm to a flamethrower, pointing it at Sun and Raven. She, in the meanwhile, was more worried about Cardin, and using the maiden powers again could end up causing more harm than good. "Do you know how to use this?" she asked the blond man as she handed him her sword.
"The basics" Sun answered.
"I need you to distract him".
"On it!" Sun then grabbed the sword and jumped into action. The robot blocking Sun's slashes while the monkey dodged the fireballs.
Raven then went for Cardin and began to unplug him from all the machines.
"AAAH!" she then heard the boy scream and saw as the robot stood over the faunus' head while pointing his flamethrower.
"Night-night, monkey boy!" Frost exclaimed with maliciousness. What little aura the boy had regained was now gone and he would burn like a fine piece of wood. With the second Tekunin gone she had full control over this one, so the fight went smoothly in favor of the assassin over the student, and taking care of the woman would be but a matter of time.
That was her plan, at least, until something hit the robot on the back and made her lose contact for a moment. Then came the hit that pushed the robot against the wall.
The Tekunin droid had no time to turn his head and see who or what attacked him before something went through his nape, shocking his head and eventually blowing it up.
Neither Raven nor Sun comprehended what was going on until they fixated on the white-haired young adult holding the staff he used to blow the robot's head off.
Moments earlier Raiden had teleported from the grounds to the fifth floor. He arrived just as a Tekunin drone was ready to burn a monkey faunus. Raiden had no idea who that kid was, but all he knew was that an enemy of the Tekunin had a better chance of being an ally rather than an enemy. First came the electric shocks to stop the attack; then came his electric flight with which he used to ram the robot, and before the machine could do anything else, he summoned his trusted weapon and finished his opponent. It was after he sighed in relief of his fight being over that he noticed he could still call for his staff; the weapon even changed, having an elegant spear made of a glowing blue diamond in one end while having two spheres, the one closest to the tip smaller than the other, made of the same glowing crystal. "Everything seems to be working then…" he said with relief.
Raven and Sun then headed towards Raiden, the latter having a big grin on his face. "Thanks a lot, man! You too, ma'am! Cardin and I would have been gone had it not been for you!" he began to say, but by the second he seemed to be going faster. "You threw fire like BAAM, and then you came in like BZZZZZ, and now those two things are gone, I bet those guys at Sedio are gonna be mad, wait, Seido! I must tell the others… but how did I get here!? Anyway, no one is gonna believe what I just saw and wait until I tell them!" he proclaimed happily before fainting.
"Oh, come on! Really kid!" Raven said in frustration.
"Do not be worried. His adrenaline production was cut short; what you just saw was a momentary boost to compensate for the loss. The next time he wakes up he will be his old self. What happened here will be lost in his mind though".
Raven was relieved for the moment, the last thing she needed was her maiden powers revealed. She then looked at the stranger once again and noticed something familiar. "Do I know you?" she asked.
"Maybe. If we did it was when I had a different face most likely. Are you an ally of Professor Ozpin?".
It would have been a perfect moment for Raven to make a snarky remark about her situation. But as much as she still didn't trust the old man, he was still her superior for now. "Yep…" she managed to say without much enjoyment. "Wait… you are the guy! The guy from this morning, aren't you!? The one who blew up the classroom hall with a lightbulb!".
Truth be told, Raiden had not wondered about his arrival at Beacon. "I have no memory of that… but I assume you are right".
As Raiden was done, Qrow, the ninjas, and Fujin arrived. They then just looked around at the mess in the room before giving questioning looks at the two still conscious people.
"We can explain!" Raven assured her brother.
Moments later, the rest of the faculty arrived. The students were to be sent to rest after all that happened with the ninja as bodyguards. An improvised circle of chairs was then made for the teachers and gods. They could have gone to Ozpin's office, but they also didn't want to risk another attack on Cardin.
The silence that fell over them was not due to hard feelings or wishes of vendetta; it was more the fact that the people from Remnant didn't even know where to begin with. They were among the very few who knew what happened in the world, and now that reality was bent over and a new threat besides Salem was on the horizon.
"Ok… I'll make the first question then…" Qrow finally said. "What is going on?" he asked while pointing at the gods.
"SHIT!" Frost yelled while throwing ice projectiles at the trees surrounding her once she returned to her starting point. She knew what was coming; she knew that nagging would be the last of her worries. Hotaru and Onaga may be annoying, but she would be a fool to pretend their methods of punishing failure didn't work. With her second strike at the same mission, she also knew said punishment was close by.
Like clockwork, an incoming call arrived. She turned on a holographic projection, and there they were. Her three superiors and the Naknada Hotaru kept around. "So… you know about it?". Sektor then showed her a screen where the pictures of a human and a mermaid faunus were displayed with the text 'Vitals lost' blinking over them.
The look on their faces was also telling enough; even if Sektor had no proper face, she knew he was boiling with rage. They said nothing and just gave her a cold look for a long while; she then sighed and understood that it was time for her to explain.
"Look, everything was going according to plan, I swear! It's not my fault Sub Zero decided to go to war with Ozpin and Ironwood!". Thanks to whatever deity was above, that seemed to have caught their attention. "I was ready to go in and out, but they did something and made the entire school enter lockdown. Whatever they wanted was at the medical wing because both were expecting Sub Zero and company".
All eyes then turned towards Sektor who went immediately to look for something on his computers; and for the first time since the conversation began, Onaga spoke. "Continue!" he ordered.
Frost felt a little relieved when she heard that word. They were clearly still skeptical about her tale, but she still had the memory video from the drones. "And guess who arrived to help them? Lord Fujin himself!" she said in a mocking tone towards the wind god.
Sektor was taken out of what he was doing as the poker face in the other men present fell. "How long ago was this? Is the battle over?" Hotaru questioned.
"Sadly, whatever happened ended up in a truce after some kids interfered with the fight. I used that time to complete the mission being the only window I had to do it, but I was stopped by a freak using medical equipment and a monkey faunus".
"Monkey faunus?" Hotaru asked with renewed interest. "Blond? Blue eyes? Tail?".
This caught Frost's attention, but then again, this was no longer a trial on her. "Yes…".
"Grandmaster?" Kollector then asked.
"She tells the truth. There was a battle. And the subject IS Sun Wukong".
All four men then went quiet as they waited for Onaga's next command. "Frost, return to base! A portal will open next to your location. Hotaru and Kollector, get ready, we are heading to Beacon!".
To be fair, Raiden and Fujin were clear about the situation: The humanoid monster known as Onaga had taken over the realm known as Orderrealm and had made deals with a 'robot ninja' for him to make an army with which they would conquer the other realms back in their own dimension. A… strange tale to be sure, but the explanation had taken longer with both gods having to explain about previous events: The creation of the realms, the fall of Shinnok, the conquest and independence of Edenia, the tears, and far more. But when the gods were done explaining, every person from Remnant was left thinking about what they had just heard. Almost all were now considering what to do about Seido Industries; all but General Ironwood.
The intervention from the people from Remnant started with Qrow. "So… our enemy is a giant half-lizard man who came back from the dead with a wish for revenge… did I get that right?". The gods nodded in approval. "Good".
Glynda, however, asked the first question. "You said one of your realms can't claim another without a victory in that tournament, right?".
Fujin knew where her question was heading. "The Mortal Kombat tournament can only be called upon to prevent a merger of our realms. And as far as the rules apply, the Elder Gods have no authority over this world or universe".
"You said the 'cyber initiative' is a relatively fast process," Raven said, remembering the massacre of her tribe. "Why is it taking them too long to make an army then? Hide a hundred thousand people and then take them to war!".
Raiden and Fujin then looked at each other with concern before the thunder god answered. "We do not know. Logic from our understanding leads to the same conclusion. Hopefully, with the information retrieved by your students we can find an answer".
Silence fell once again, but then Ironwood asked a question that had never been remotely considered by the people on his side. "What about the emperor you mentioned; the 'Kahn' who killed Onaga?".
The gods were not sure about the origin of Ironwood's question. His allies, however, knew the source of it. Nonetheless, Raiden answered. "The civil war in Outworld seems to be taking most of his attention. I do not believe he will try anything, even on other realms, until Outworld is fully under his command once again". Raiden then remembered the words of the God of Light and his mission to find Osma. "By the way, there is something we must do before fighting against our common enemy. We must look for-".
Raiden was interrupted once again by an alarm going off on Glynda and Ozpin's scrolls. One look at their faces, however, revealed that a threat was incoming. Both people then quickly stood up. "Sorry to hold this meeting short; James, Winter, you better come with us as well".
"Oz… what is happening?" Ironwood managed to ask.
As Ozpin and Glynda got their weapons back, she then turned around. "A fleet of Seido Industries bullheads has entered our airspace".
