Chapter 39: Witness Protection Much?
At a secret facility in New York, Felicia Hardy was being interrogated by cops and W.O.O.H.P. "Is this really necessary?" Felicia asked with a frustrated expression. "I understand the handcuffs but sunglasses?"
"They were developed to neutralize your bad luck powers, Ms. Hardy." Jerry explained. "Now, do you have anything to prove that Wilson Fisk is the Kingpin?"
Before answering, Felicia took a look at her lawyer as if waiting for his approval. "Ms. Hardy, the deal has already been signed." The blind lawyer from Hell's Kitchen stated. "Now please fulfill your end."
Before she could say anything, the entrance door melted and the Scorpion revealed himself. "Take the witness and her lawyer away from here." Jerry commanded.
"Nobody betrays the Kingpin and gets away with that!" The Scorpion declared and tried to shoot acid at Felicia but Jerry tossed a chair on the way and it blocked the acid. "You'll pay for this, old man!"
"Make me." Jerry defied the supervillain and led him outside.
"You can't beat me." The Scorpion declared.
"That's not the plan." Jerry replied with a smirk. "While I distracted you, the witness escaped."
"You'll pay for…" The Scorpion's declaration was interrupted by a web covering the end of his tail. "You?"
"Run." Spider-Man told Jerry, who decided to obey since he had priorities.
"What're you doing here, web-head?" The Scorpion asked.
"I was swinging through this friendly neighborhood and saw you nearby." Spidey answered.
Meanwhile, Jerry Lewis rejoined the rest of Felicia's protection detail. "That's unacceptable." Matthew Murdock stated. "My client needs a better protection."
"I'll put my best spies on the case, Ms. Hardy." Jerry reassured her.
"I want Danny Phantom." She said, shocking everyone. "What? I know he occasionally helps you W.O.O.H.P. guys."
"He's a superhero who volunteers on occasion, Ms. Hardy." Jerry stated. "I can ask him but, if he refuses, I won't be able to force him."
"Just tell him it's me." Felicia said with a suggestive tone. "I'm sure he didn't forget me from when you+me=love introduced us."
"I'll talk to him." Jerry replied.
On the next day, Danny was enjoying a date at the beach with his girlfriend Alex. "Danny, I'm going to catch some waves." She said. "Do you wanna come with me?"
"May I just fly around?" Danny asked. The irony wasn't lost on him. His girlfriend knew about his powers and his heroics and he's still afraid she'd take him for a dork for not being into sports like her.
"It's not the same thing." Alex replied.
"In that case, I'll stay here in case somebody tries to mess with your stuff while you're surfing." Danny suggested.
"Who would do that?" Alex skeptically asked.
"Yoohoo! Danny!" They heard Mandy calling.
"Never mind." Alex muttered.
"Phantom, why don't you spend some time with cooler people than that loser?" Mandy asked.
"I don't see anyone like that around here." Danny replied.
"Well, if you change your mind, my cousin and I will be waiting right over there." Mandy said and turned around right before a giant tube sucked Danny and Alex in.
The young couple landed, as usual, inside Jerry's office and Clover and Samantha were already waiting for him. "Girls, Danny, Felicia Hardy was attacked last night by the supervillain known as The Scorpion." Jerry said. "She requested protection."
"We're ready, Jerry." Samantha replied.
"Actually, Ms. Hardy requested for Danny to protect her." Jerry explained.
"No way!" Alex screamed in horror. "She's trying to seduce Danny. Danny, you're not an official spy so you're free to refuse!"
"Don't worry, Alex." Danny reassured his girlfriend. "Felicia and I only had one date and I didn't even know about her criminal activities by the time I made my choice."
"So, are you accepting the mission?" Jerry asked.
"If Alex doesn't mind." Danny replied.
"Don't worry, Alex." Clover told her friend. "If Danny wanted despicable girls, he'd be dating Paulina or Mandy by now."
"True, Clover." Danny agreed.
"Alright then but I'll, I mean, we'll go with you." Alex replied.
"No." Jerry sternly said. "The three of you will investigate Wilson Fisk."
"The wealthy philanthropist from New York?" Samantha asked and Jerry nodded. "Why?"
"Because Felicia Hardy, as part of a plea bargain, denounced Fisk as one of the people she stole things for and New York's Kingpin of Crime." Jerry answered.
"Jerry, you don't really believe there's a crime lord able to run his empire in a town protected by so many superheroes, do you?" Samantha asked.
"No offense to Danny here but, while superheroes are good at stopping outright villains like the ghosts in Amity Park, the akumas in Paris or the average bank robber but finding proof against crime lords requires more discretion." Jerry stated. "That's why some white-collar criminals remain at large." After wards, Jerry handed the girls some gadgets and sent Danny and the Spies to New York.
Later on, Danny met Felicia, her lawyer, and her protection detail. "Mr. Phantom, on behalf of my client, I'd like to thank you for agreeing to protect her." Matthew Murdock said while offering to shake hands with Danny.
"Even if he chose another girl, he couldn't resist me." Felicia commented.
"Knowing you're a criminal helped later, Black Cat." Danny frowned. "I'm here as a hero and nothing more."
"Don't play hard to get, Danny." Felicia replied with a suggestive smile.
"This is gonna be a long day." Danny commented.
Meanwhile, the girls disguised themselves as maintenance workers to infiltrate Fisk Corp's corporate headquarters. Eventually, Alex reached Fisk's office and placed a bug there. Hearing the door open, she hid herself before Fisk and a subordinate entered. "Sir, our mole has informed Black Cat's new hiding spot." The subordinate said.
"Good." Fisk replied. "I'll send the Chameleon after her."
'Oh, no.' Alex was horrified. 'I must get out of here and warn Danny before it's too late.'
Moments later, Danny was keeping guard when he received a call from Jerry. "Danny, Alex has just reported that Fisk sent the Chameleon after Ms. Hardy. Keep a look out for anyone who acts out of character even if they look like people who know and trust."
"Yes, Sir." Danny replied.
Seconds later, Jerry entered the room. "How did you get here so soon?"
"None of your business, Leaguer." 'Jerry' answered. "Now go and tell your fellow superfriends their help isn't needed."
"Tell them yourself… Chameleon." Danny replied.
The villain was surprised by how quickly he was found out but soon recovered himself and drew a gun. He was quick to shoot but Danny was just as quick to create a shield. The bullet made a noise that attracted several cops and W.O.O.H.P. agents. "What happened, Sir?" One of the agents asked the Chameleon, who still was impersonating Jerry.
"Phantom's the Chameleon in disguise!" The Chameleon said.
"That's a lie! He is!" Danny replied while pointing at the Chameleon.
"He's the liar." The Chameleon said. "I should've known something was wrong when he said the Justice League changed their minds regarding my request for help."
"The League has nothing to do with it and you would know if you were the real Jerry." Danny replied.
"He's right." An agent commented and pointed his gun at the Chameleon. The other agents, and eventually the cops as well, followed the action. "I surrender." The Chameleon said as he reverted back to his real look.
It didn't take long until J. Jonah Jameson announced that Wilson Fisk was arrested as New York's Kingpin of Crime. "His wife and his son refused to comment." Jameson said.
"Why would someone think I'm a Leaguer?" Danny asked.
"Probably you were seen with them enough times." Clover guessed.
"Anyway, Danny, since Fisk is behind bars and the girls found evidence at his office, S.H.I.E.L.D. agreed to keep Felicia safe until it is her time to testify." Jerry stated. "Thank you for your cooperation." He then pushed a button and it sent Danny and the girls away. "It never runs old." He commented while smirking and picked up a report. "Now, let's see what the Clark siblings reported from their mission."
Danny and Alex eventually had another beach date. Danny was helping Alex with her suntan oil when they heard screams from the sea. It was Mandy. "Help! Help!" She screamed. "Is there no superhero to save me?"
Danny was standing up but Alex stopped him. "Don't worry, Danny." She reassured her boyfriend. "The life guards are already on their way."
"Wow, they're faster than Baywatch suggests." Danny commented.
"Hey!" Mandy protested. "You're not Danny."
Upset about being deceived, the life guard holding Mandy dropped her. "Could this be more humiliating?" Mandy asked and a crab caught her toe. "Yeeeeouch!" Everyone laughed.
End chapter.
