CHAPTER 40- GODS AMONG US
Kara and Ray were glued to their seats, carefully eyeing their surroundings. Parademons occupying the skies. Fortunately the creatures didn't have the strength the dent Kryptonian structures, but that didn't mean they couldn't swat the ship out of the sky.
Kara was moving at the bare minimum to pilot the ship.
"So do we know what we're looking for once we're on the ship?" Ray asked.
"Find the power source, destroy it. Avoid Steppenwolf as much as possible." Kara answered.
"Yeah, I got that, but how exactly do we plan to locate the power source?"
Kara lightly shrugged. "We'll figure it out as we go."
Ray relented and sat back down in his seat. He readied his helmet and made sure his blasters were on.
Kara navigated the ship into an open hatch, probably where it released its soldiers. They were able to smoothly get in without anything being set off. At least, they assumed so.
"Okay, we're in. Easy part's done." Kara said, getting out of the ship.
"Do you hear anything? See anything?" Ray asked.
Kara expanded her senses. Hearing and vision taking in the ship. Turning the corner, she caught sight of something coming towards us. "We've got to go. Somebody's coming."
Kara grabbed Ray's arm to lead him away. "Wait, what about our ship? That's our way back."
"We'll have to leave it. We don't have the time to try to hide a spaceship." It pained Kara to leave behind the ship that brought her to Earth, but this wasn't the time to get sentimental.
Turning the corner, the duo ran into a troop of parademons, getting ready to fly out of the ship. The groups were shocked, but Kara and Ray recovered first, sending out blasts of energy at the creatures, cutting them down before they had the chance to react.
Kara took a look around with her x-ray vision. There was a part of the ship she couldn't see. That must be where the power source is. "Follow me,"
Twists and turns, and some inevitable interactions with other groups of parademons, Kara and Ray reached the metal door
"You ready?" Kara asked. "I don't know what's beyond that door."
"This is the entire reason I came. Let's do this." Ray nodded his head.
.
"Where do these connect?" Felicity asked with several wires in her hands.
"Those were supposed to be plugged in ages ago. No wonder I'm not getting a signal on this thing." Cisco said.
"Excuse me, but you told me to put them down and work on coding the laser. You should have told me if you were unable to get a connection."
"Just get them connected. We're almost finished here." Winn said.
Felicity promptly inserted the wires in the correct space. The machine lit up with power, ready to be used.
"Okay, here goes nothing." Cisco said nervously. "Test dummy ready?"
Winn hauled in a life-size doll with a bulls-eye on its chest. "Ready." He gave a thumbs up.
"Aim and fire." Cisco announced, typing the commands into the computer. A small orange beam shot out and incinerated the dummy to ashes.
The trio of nerds stared at the pile of ashes. "We did it. We actually did it." Felicity gasped.
"Just gotta make more and come up with a portable battery. Once that's done, it's night night demons." Winn said.
While they were busy fine tuning the weapon, the rest of the heroes were busy fending the city and Caitlin was on the Comms duty along with Kamilla and others
"Barry... There's a new batch of parademons coming up in the 52nd street" Caitlin said
"On it" Barry said and raced towards it.
"They just keep coming. We can't keep this up for long. More and more people are being turned to parademons. It's just getting sad at this point." Barry said after a while
"Keep going. Once Kara and Ray take out the mothership, the parademons will abandon and return to Apokolips." J'onn said. "We just need to hold on a little more."
The streets were buzzing with danger. It had mostly been abandoned by now, but the few that had been unfortunate enough to be caught were demonized and joined the groups that flew the sky.
Despite that, the parademon's numbers were dwindling, but the heroes were tiring as well. And they dread to think what might happen if they were caught unaware by one of them and turned against their friends.
But each of them swore to not give up and fight to the end. So many had already lost their lives, either by their own hands, or would be forced to serve under the rule of a hellish planet until they would be forced to sacrifice themselves.
They wouldn't let this spread to the rest of the planet. They would fight and stop this here. They had to.
.
She was rushing. She was late. The battle had already begun and she was nowhere to be seen. But as she flew at her top speed, she didn't regret it. She took a few extra moments to ensure her people's safety. But if she didn't get there on time, there would be no place to hide, and she would have failed.
A blur shot past her that made her pause mid flight. What was that?
Turning to where it had gone, she caught sight of two silhouettes. One of them wore the emblem anyone would recognize in the entire world. Superman.
Deciding she could possibly spare a few more seconds. Central was so close, she could already see the stationary ships in the sky.
As the dark creature was about to slam its fists down to the man in blue, she released her lasso and restrained the beast's fists in a tight hold. Pulling back, she stopped the creature from getting close to Superman.
"Thanks." He called out. "But who are you?"
She didn't reply to it. Then Clark saw her and he could understand who it was. "You're Wonderwoman... I didn't think you were real.."
"I'm real when it's useful..." the Amazonian warrior said "But I am in a hurry, so if we could wrap this up soon." her shoes were losing traction, so she went into the air, hoping that would solve the issue.
Doomsday was violently shaking the rope coiled around his wrists. His brute strength was enough to jostle Wonder Woman in the air.
With a great heave, Doomsday pulled Wonder Woman right towards him, and angled it so she would pierce herself on his claws.
Superman tackled Doomsday from behind and they both fell to the ground once more, Wonder Woman sailing over both of them. She was soon able to correct herself and landed on the ground.
Doomsday tried to rid himself of the rope, but it proved unwilling to snap.
With its hands occupied, Clark took a moment to take a breath. Nothing he could do seemed to be working. Taking in a gulp of air, he let it go and froze Doomsday in its tracks. Not that it seemed to notice and it was still busy trying to get the rope off his hands.
"You okay?" Superman asked his new companion.
"Trust me, I've dealt with worse, but now I'm getting angry." Wonder Woman answered.
"I appreciate the assistance, but you should get out of here. I can handle this."
"Cause that's clearly been working out for you. Never leave a man to do a woman's job."
"And what is that?"
"Save the day."
Doomsday's frustration increased, but venom seemed to be leaking from its fists, enough to slightly slip out of the rope's hold. Once that was done, he tossed the rope aside.
"He's learning." Superman commented on the thing's tactic to get out of the tight grip. Lena seemed to underestimate the thing's ability to adapt, not just being controlled by instinct anymore. This could spell trouble. It was hard enough to take on before it could think.
Doomsday casually stepped out of the ice its feet were encased in and locked its eyes with its adversary. Now adversaries.
Superman looked to his new partner. "Still up for more?"
Wonder Woman pulled out the sword strapped to her back. "Try and stop me."
At once, all three of them charged at the other with determination to pummel the enemy into the ground.
.
Kara lifted her foot in the air and kicked forward, sending the door flying off its hinges.
The two of them ran in to see what was in there. They were met with the view of a large man staring impassively at them.
"So you finally arrived. To be honest, I'm disappointed it's taken you so long little Kryptonian." Steppenwolf said, not even acknowledging Ray as a presence. So Ray used the opportunity to shrink down unnoticed.
"You've been expecting us?" Kara said, wary at how calm he was presenting himself.
"I've been aware of your presence on my ship since you arrived. I always know what happens on my ship."
"Kara," Ray whispered in her ear, not that she needed it but she appreciated the thought, "this is the place. Right behind him is the power source. Keep him distracted, I'm going over to shut it down."
Kara nodded slightly that she'd received his message and knew what to do. "Steppenwolf isn't it? Why have you come here?"
"To rid the universe of your backwater planet. This little mud wallow is a stain that needs to be wiped out." Steppenwolf explained. "You though, need not share humanity's fate. You're young, but hold much potential. Join me, and I can give you everything you're looking for."
"Thanks, but no thanks. Not interested." Kara shot his offer down.
"Then you've made your choice."
Steppenwolf moved. He moved in a way that spelled doom for all that opposed him. Speed of such degree that someone of his stature had no right to achieve. His suddenness shocked Kara, but she managed to move out of the way just in time.
Kara sent a punch with all her strength behind it, but Steppenwolf turned around and batted her arm away and shoved her with the palm of his hand.
"Such incompetence. I've lived for centuries. Battles fought, wars witnessed. I've had several lifetimes of experience, perfecting myself. A Kryptonian doesn't measure up to me."
Kara took in a deep breath and let loose an icy wind. She had to keep her distance. In close-quarters he'd have the advantage, but winning wasn't the point. She just had to stall long enough for Ray to dismantle the ship. Then they'd be able to get out of here.
The cold air scored a direct hit, but Steppenwolf casually stepped out of the cloud of mist. "It feels as though someone has left a window open. Are you hoping I catch a cold?"
Steppenwolf bended his knees and leapt forward. Kara tried to fly, but Steppenwolf grabbed her out of the air and pinned her to the floor. He raised one arm in the air and brought it down, punching her face. There was enough power in that punch that Kara's skin actually broke and blood was dripping from her head.
Kara struggled, but she couldn't manage to get him off of her. She tried her final trick and collected power in her eyes. Her eyeballs were glowing white with power, but just as she was about to release the energy, Steppenwolf used his free hand to cover her face. The lasers exploded in her face, burning her eyes. Kara shrieked in pain. She never realized how painful they were and were forced to shut her eyes. She was blind.
"Not a very hot heat vision. Then again you are young. Your powers are still developing. If you were to join me, you'd actually live long enough to experience that."
Her x-ray vision couldn't work through herself, and her thermal vision was covered with her eyelids, so everything appeared warm. Kara had to extend her other senses until her eyes healed enough to open them.
Kara took another breath and blew with all her might. The gale force of the wind managed to send Steppenwolf flying off her. Kara immediately took to the air when she felt the weight leave her.
Kara's hearing took in everything. Kara twitched her head slightly in the direction of Ray to try to hear him better as he continued working. She didn't see, but she heard Steppenwolf suddenly chuckle.
"Oh, you're smart. Keeping me occupied whilst your little human pet tries to bring my ship down. Not today,"
Kara wasn't sure what he did, but she could hear several other bodies enter the room. Flying creatures that were heading straight towards her and others that went for Ray. Great, just what they needed. More parademons. She tried to get to Ray, but the parademons blocked her path. WIthout her sight, it was difficult to hold them off when they were swarming her from all directions.
It only got worse when several of them exploded right beside her, deafening her with the sudden bangs. Kara couldn't tell where anything was anymore. No sight, no hearing. She was forced to feel her way around, randomly swinging her fists to be lucky enough to hit something.
It was the other way around though when a hard fist knocked the wind out of her, causing her to crash to the ground.
Kara struggled to get up, but another punch, this time to her back left her shouting in pain, her efforts abandoned. Kara thought she felt something break back there. She could maybe make out some muffling, but she wasn't sure what the person was saying.
The ground rumbled beneath her. Kara lifted her head up and painfully forced herself to open her eyes. There were spots, and very blurry, but she could vaguely make out a blue and red silhouette of a giant figure. Ray must have enlarged himself.
With a swipe of his giant hand, Ray crushed the machinery and began making his way towards her. That was one way of disabling the power source.
Ray shrank back down to his normal size and helped her up. "Let's get out of here."
