Chapter Forty: Separation
The summer began much like every other, though it was unusually warm. The sun beating down on the ground. The first morning of the holidays, Emalia awoke to a message from Fred on their enchanted parchment.
'Good morning darling. I miss you.'
Emalia lay back in her bed, beaming from ear to ear. Merlin, she loved Fred beyond words. The way just a few simple words, written in his messy handwriting brightened her mood, made no logical sense to her at times.
She swung her legs out of her bed, onto the cold wooden floor, walking over to her desk she reached for her quill and wrote back to him.
'Good morning Freddie, I miss you too. I hope we can see each other over the summer. Tell all I said hello'
Emalia started off her summer as she normally did, by completing her assigned homework within the first week. She laughed to herself as she imagined what her friends would say about this, more than likely make a joke about her missing the Hogwarts library.
Two weeks into the holidays, she received a letter from Fred. She opened it hurriedly at the kitchen table at breakfast one morning, Albus watched her, his eyes twinkling in amusement.
'Dear Emalia,
I have exciting news! Dad won the Daily Prophet's Annual Prize Draw, though you may know that already if this letter arrives after you've read the paper. Seven hundred galleons! Imagine. Mum and Dad have decided to take us all on a trip to Egypt to visit Bill. It's going to be amazing; we are all looking forward to it. The only thing is, we are going for a month, so I am not sure if we will be able to have you over to visit, which kind of sucks.
Though I will bring my parchment with me, so keep an eye out for messages on that.
Love you,
Fred.
Emalia smiled, she was beyond happy for the Weasley's, they deserved that holiday. Although, her heart sank at the prospect of not being able to spend time with Fred at the Burrow this summer. Her brows furrowed slightly.
'Is there something wrong?' mused Albus as he busied himself with his porridge.
'No, nothing. I just don't think I will be visiting the Burrow this summer' sighed Emalia, before taking a bite of her toast.
'Oh?' said Albus curiously, his eyes watching her carefully.
Emalia squinted as the sunlight billowed into the kitchen, hitting her eyes. 'Oh its nothing serious Albus. The Weasley's won a competition, so they are going on holiday to Egypt for a month.'
'How delightful!' said Albus happily, 'I am sure they will have a wonderful time.' He paused, looking at the conflicted look on Emalia's face.
'Do not fret my dear, the summer will be over before you know it, and you will all be back in Hogwarts quicker than you can say balderdash.' He smiled brightly at Emalia, and she managed to smile back at him.
They both finished their breakfast in pleasant conversation, and after they finished, cleaned up the bright airy kitchen.
'Have you any plans for your day?' asked Albus as he used magic to clean their dishes, then placing them neatly in the wooden cabinets that hung on the wall.
'I was going to go read in the garden' she said, putting the carton of milk and the butter back into the fridge.
Albus nodded. 'Well, I will be in my office in Hogwarts. I will keep the Floo line open so if you need me, just stick your head through. I will be back before lunch.'
Emalia nodded and smiled up at him. 'I will be fine Albus' she reassured him. She was old enough to look after herself for the day, she did not need Albus to bring her with him. 'Anyways, it is such a lovely day, I would like to enjoy it out in the garden here.'
Albus chuckled, 'I will see you later Emalia.' With that he turned on his heel and apparated out of the kitchen without a sound.
She walked up the stairs to retrieve her book, and then made her way out of the patio doors into the wild garden that Albus had cultivated.
She walked barefoot over the cobblestone path, that cut through the long grass, making her way down to the small pond that sat underneath a willow tree. There she sat down with her book and lay back, disappearing from sight in the long grass. The fragrance of all the wildflowers filled her nose.
Emalia took a deep breath in and exhaled, after the craziness and stress of the past year, it was nice for once to be able to relax in peaceful settings. She read for a couple of hours, before making her way back to the house to grab some water. When she arrived back at the patio door she gasped. She could see her reflection clearly, and her skin had turned a bright pink. It looked a lot worse than it was, as the pink clashed against the canary yellow sundress she was wearing.
She mentally cursed herself, this was going to be a pain tomorrow. She made her way to the upstairs bathroom, to root through the small potions cabinet, looking for a salve for the sunburn. She found one, a small brown jar, shoved right in at the back of the cabinet. She opened it and spread it over her arms and face, enjoying the cooling sensation it had against her red, inflamed skin.
When she had covered the red areas with the salve, she made her way to her room to check on her parchment, she found three messages from Fred. Each of them telling her he loved her and missed her.
She responded in kind, then put the parchment into her book, along with a self-inking quill and made her way back down to the kitchen. She poured herself a giant glass of water and gulped it down, before pouring another. She had not realised how dehydrated she was.
She walked into the living room, glancing at the large clock that sat on the marble mantlepiece, as she walked over to the record player. 'Eleven o'clock, Albus will probably be back in an hour or so.'
She flipped through the records that sat on the shelf, some of them being more worn than others. Her fingers flicked down the spine of the record, looking at the name of each, before coming to stop at a record by a Muggle band.
A wide bright smile spread across her face as the first few notes of the music came from the record player. 'You are the dancing queeeeen. Young and sweet, only seventeen'
Emalia danced around the living room, she had to stay inside for an hour after putting that salve on, and what better way to spend her time then blasting ABBA at the max.
When she was all danced out, she collapsed into the dusty old purple couch behind her and began writing on her piece of parchment to Fred, telling him all that she had done. Although this parchment helped bridge the gap when they were apart, it still was not the same as being around each other.
He replied back instantly, telling her how he was in the middle of packing for Egypt. A pang of sadness hit her, the realisation that she was not going to see Fred for a while had finally sunk in. She sighed, sinking back into the couch once more, her happy mood dimmed somewhat, as she waited for Albus to return home.
She had been in regular contact with her cousin this summer, sparing her from the worry she had felt the previous year. She had just wrapped up his present, an up-to-date book about the current Quidditch teams in Ireland and Great Britain, some Quidditch gear, and a Holyhead Harpies jersey. She was unsure about the jersey, because she was not certain which Quidditch team Harry actually supported, they had never actually discussed that subject.
She attached everything to Grif, looking at her owl anxiously, she said, 'Will you be able to carry all this to Harry? It's quite heavy.'
Her owl hooted up at her haughtily, completely unimpressed with her question. Emalia laughed to herself, 'I'm sorry Grif' she said as she tickled the top of his head, 'Have a safe flight. I'll have a treat for you when you get back.'
Opening the French windows in her bedroom, she watched Grif take flight and disappear from view before she closing them once again.
Two weeks went by, Grif had still not returned, and Emalia was beyond worried. She had spent three nights crying, for she loved her owl. But early one morning, Emalia was woken by a constant tapping noise on the window.
She got out of bed and threw open the dark curtains. Sitting on the windowsill was her owl. Emalia was beyond happy to see her feathered friend back home, safe and sound. She flung open the French windows with such force, that she nearly shattered the pane of glass as it hit the wall.
Grif flew in, happy to be home, and dropped a letter onto her unmade bed. Emalia, having not noticed the letter yet, proceeded to scold her owl. 'Where have you been Grif?!' I have been so worried about you, you silly bird!'
Grif settled onto Emalia's shoulder and nipped her hair affectionately. Emalia sighed with relief, as she reached up and gently ruffled his feathers, before he flew into his open cage.
Emalia smiled, her mind at ease now that Grif was home. She clambered into bed, and it was only when she heard the crinkling sound, did she notice that she was sitting on a letter. She instantly recognised Fred's writing and ripped the envelope open.
Dear Emalia,
First of all, how are you? I know we have been sending each other messages every day, but it is not the same as seeing you in person. Hopefully it will be soon. We will be home the week before term starts, and will be heading to London, so if Albus gives his permission, maybe we can meet there?
Second of all, did you send your owl to me without sending a letter? Or, maybe he figured that getting a letter from me would cheer you up? I always told you that bird is much smarter than he looks! Egypt is bloody brilliant. We have been touring all the old tombs, Bill's been showing us around.
Those ancient Egyptian wizards were barmy, the curses they put on the tombs! Though it has given George and I some inspiration in the prank department anyways. George and I have been driving Percy mad, he is desperately waiting for his letter from Hogwarts, to see if he has been made Head Boy or not. I'm not sure I want to find out, he will be insufferable either way.
I hope to see you in London before term begins. I miss you, more than I can say. No need to reply to this letter, by the time it gets to me I could be back in England.
Love always,
Fred.
Emalia hugged the letter to her chest, a huge smile on her face. She beamed up at Grif who was watching her expectantly. 'Thank you' she whispered. Grif hooted happily before tucking his head under his wing. Emalia opened the drawer of her bedside locker, stashing the letter safely inside, before burrowing into her bed and falling back to sleep.
Emalia woke up later than usual the next morning, she stumbled down the stairs in jeans and a Weird Sister's t-shirt at eleven in the morning. Albus was pottering about in the garden, the watering can floatingin the air as he bent down to inspect the roses he was cultivating.
Emalia waved at him from the window as she made her breakfast. When Albus noticed her, he made his way inside, the watering can still floating around outside, watering the flowers.
'Ah! You're awake' said Albus cheerfully as he walked into the kitchen. He sat at the head of the small wooden table, looking at Emalia expectantly. Emalia stopped making her cup of tea, 'Is something the matter, Albus?' she asked, as she looked at him confused.
'You have a letter' he said smiling.
'How?' began Emalia, wondering to herself how he knew about Fred's letter, when she noticed a large envelope, with her name and address written in beautiful cursive.
She left her cup on the kitchen counter and made her way to the table. She picked up the letter. 'It's from Hogwarts!' she said utterly perplexed. She did not receive letters from the school, she lived with the Headmaster, so there was no need for her to receive one.
Albus's eyes were glistening with amusement, but other than that his face gave nothing away. She opened it, rather apprehensively, and took the letter out of the envelope. Something hard fell out of the envelope, clattering onto the table loudly. Emalia picked it up, turning it over she read the inscription on it, 'Prefect' she murmured quietly.
She looked up at Albus, a mixture of shock and excitement on her face. 'Is this real?' she asked in almost a whisper.
Albus chuckled 'Of course it is real. The Professors were nearly unanimous in their nominations. You are one of the Gryffindor prefects for this coming year.'
Emalia launched herself at Albus, hugging him tightly, laughing joyfully. She had wanted to be a prefect, but had not expected to actually be appointed as one, seeing as Albus is her guardian.
'I think we should celebrate this evening' said Albus smiling. Emalia nodded; she was smiling from ear to ear, unable to contain her happiness and delight.
'Your parents would be very proud of you Emalia' said Albus solemnly. Her smile grew bigger, for she knew it to be true, her parents would be beyond proud of her.
She finished making her breakfast, quickly scoffing it down, and she made a beeline for her bedroom. She wanted to share her news with Fred, how he would take it though was another story. She took out her parchment and quill and began to write.
'Are you able to talk?'
A few minutes later, she got a response:
'Always'
Emalia smiled to herself as she shared her news, trying to envisage his reaction.
'I have some exciting and unexpected news!'
Fred's response came through a second later:
'Should I be worried?'
Emalia laughed to herself, as she grabbed her quill and wrote back:
'I got a letter this morning, I am prefect!'
She watched as her message disappeared and was replaced with Fred's response a few moments later:
'I think you misspelled perfect. But if you mean you are going to be one of the Gryffindor prefects, congratulations! I am proud of you, though I think my reputation will take a hit.'
A second later another message came through:
'I have to go; we are about to go explore some ruins. George and I are thinking we may be able to trap Percy in a pyramid. He has been appointed Head Boy and won't stop harping on about it. Wish us luck! Love you x.'
Emalia giggled, writing:
'Just don't let your mum catch you. Love you too x.'
It was a good day, and Emalia was beyond happy.
The following week, Albus sat Emalia down in the kitchen. 'We have something to discuss. Harry is currently staying in the Leaky Cauldron. Unfortunately, he, lost control of his magic, and inflated his aunt. So, he is staying there, under the protection and watchful eye of numerous wizards, so he is safe.'
Emalia stared at Albus in disbelief, 'This is a joke, right?' she said, searching Albus's face for some sort of give-away that this was just an elaborate ruse.
Albus shook his head gently, 'No my dear, it is not.' He paused, giving her some time to process what he had just said. 'Though there is a silver lining to this.'
'Which is?' she asked expectantly.
'You will be able to visit him every day if you so wish. I can have the fireplace connected to the Leaky Cauldron, so it will not be a problem for you to visit.'
'You mean it?' Emalia asked excitedly.
'Of course' chuckled Albus.
The next day, around noon, grabbing a handful of Floo powder from the china vase that sat on the mantlepiece, Emalia stepped into the stone fireplace and clearly enunciated 'The Leaky Cauldron.'
Emalia stepped out of the large stone hearth of the Leaky Cauldron and dusted the soot off her clothes. She made her way out of the pub, towards the hustle and bustle of Diagon Alley. Albus had already purchased her books, and she did not need any new robes, so she decided her first mission would be to locate her cousin.
She spent the better part of an hour hunting him down, weaving in and out of the crowded streets and shops. Eventually Emalia found him, sitting in the sunshine, outside of Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour, with his schoolbooks, parchment and a giant sundae on the table in front of him.
Emalia made her way over to him, he had yet to spot her, so she sat down opposite him. 'How come you always manage to find trouble, dear cousin' she said smiling. Harry looked up at her, startled, for he had been very engrossed in his Transfiguration homework.
He broke out into a grin when he recognised her. 'Well? What happened!' she demanded, rather than asked. Harry's grin faltered slighty, and he began to share the story of what had happened.
'Harry!' exclaimed Emalia, with a shocked expression.
'Well, I didn't do it on purpose' he said sheepishly.
Emalia burst into laughter, the whole situation was rather comical, and going from what Harry had told her, the old bint deserved it.
Harry stared at her, he was definitely not expecting that reaction, but he too joined in with the laughter. The two of them sat there, chatting and gorging themselves on ice-cream for the rest of the day.
Emalia spent much of the next week in Diagon Alley with Harry. In fact, it was nice to spend the time alone just the two of them. They were not given the opportunity to have much one-on-one time, being each other's family and having gone through similar tragedies so early in life, they both valued their familial ties.
It was the last day before term resumed and Emalia woke to a note on her parchment from Fred.
'Going to Diagon Alley today, we are staying in the Leaky Cauldron tonight. Maybe Albus might let you stay too and we can all travel to the train together? I asked Mum and she said she was fine with it, as long as Albus gives his permission.
I can't wait to see you x'
Emalia flung her duvet off her, quickly changing out of her pyjamas and into clothes, bound down the stairs, 2 steps at a time and ran straight to the kitchen. There she found Albus sitting, drinking tea and reading the paper. He watched her enter the kitchen from over his paper, his eyebrow cocked with curiosity.
'Albus, all the Weasleys are staying in the Leaky Cauldron tonight, they will be travelling with Harry to King's Cross tomorrow, and Fred has asked me if I could stay there with them?' she asked hopefully.
Albus chuckled, 'I see nothing wrong with that, as long as Molly and Arthur are aware of the arrangements.' Emalia nodded and hugged him before running back up the stairs.
She had her belongings packed for the last few days, her excitement to get back to school to see her friends was overwhelming. She shoved the last few things into her backpack before writing a quick note to Fred.
'Yes, see you later x'
She hauled her trunk down the stairs, regretting that decision when she came to the turn as the trunk was quite heavy, but she managed. She placed it in the hallway for Albus to bring with him when he left for Hogwarts in the evening.
She was not heading to the Leaky Cauldron until the afternoon, so she spent the morning with Albus, both of them looking forwards to what the new school year would bring.
At one o'clock Emalia used the Floo to get to the Leaky Cauldron. When she arrived, she found Mr Weasley sitting at the bar reading the Daily Prophet.
'Good afternoon Mr Weasley' she called cheerfully.
Mr Weasley looked up from his paper and smiled warmly. 'Emalia! How have you been?'
'Good, how was your holiday?' she asked in return.
'Marvellous! Those ancient Egyptians really were something. Muggle and wizard alike!'
The two of them descended into quite an animated discussion about ancient Egypt, when Harry, Ron and Hermione walked in.
They all greeted each other, when Mrs Weasley walked in, laden with shopping, closely followed by Fred and George.
Emalia beamed when she saw Fred, and he two looked delighted to see her. Emalia ran up to him and launched herself into his arms, he caught her, wrapping his arms around her tightly and swung her around; nearly knocking Percy in the process.
Percy, who had spotted Harry, held out his hand solemnly, as though he and Harry had never met and said, 'Harry. How nice to see you.'
'Hello, Percy' said Harry, trying not to laugh.
Fred, who had put Emalia back on her feet, was watching the interaction grinning.
'I hope you're well?' said Percy pompously, shaking hands.
'Eh, very well thanks –'
'Harry!' said Fred, elbowing Percy out of the way and bowing deeply. 'Simply splendid to see you, old boy -'
Emalia snorted with laughter, trying, and failing to turn it into a sneeze.
'Marvellous' said George, pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry's hand in turn. 'Absolutely spiffing.'
Percy scowled.
'That's enough, now' warned Mrs Weasley.
'Mum!' said Fred, as though he'd only just spotted her, and seized her hand, too. 'How really corking to see you -'
'I said that's enough!' said Mrs Weasley sternly, before turning to face Harry and Emalia. 'Hello my dears, I suppose you have heard our exciting news?' She pointed at the brand-new silver badge on Percy's chest. 'Second Head Boy in the family!' she said swelling with pride.
'And last' Fred muttered under his breath.
'I don't doubt that,' said Mrs Weasley, frowning suddenly. 'I noticed they haven't made you two Prefects.'
'What do we want to be Prefects for?' said George, looking revolted at the very idea. 'It'd take all the fun out of life.'
Ginny giggled.
'You want to set a better example for your sister!' snapped Mrs Weasley.
'Ginny's got other brothers to set her an example, Mother,' said Percy loftily. 'I'm going up to change for dinner.' He disappeared.
'Yeah Mum, plus I don't think my reputation could take another hit' said Fred, 'my girlfriend is a Prefect. Can you imagine the shame' he teased, grinning down at her with pride.
Emalia shoved him grinning.
'Oh! Congratulations Emalia, dear,' said Mrs Weasley happily 'I am sure Albus is very proud of you!'
Emalia nodded 'Yeah he is, it was a surprise to be honest. I wasn't expecting it' she said modestly.
'Oh shush Em, if anyone in our year was to get prefect, it would be you' called George from the bar.
Emalia flushed.
'Well Arthur and I are very happy for you, and very proud of you too' said Mrs Weasley, as she pulled Emalia into a hug.
Emalia managed to mumble a thank you, overwhelmed with the support she was receiving.
Dinner that night was an enjoyable affair. Tom, the innkeeper of the Leaky Cauldron, put three tables together in the parlour. The seven Weasleys, Emalia, Harry and Hermione ate their way through five delicious courses.
They were all laughing, the conversation flowing between them all easily. Fred and Emalia sat beside each other, holding hands underneath the table.
'How're we getting to King's Cross tomorrow, Dad?' asked Fred, as they all tucked into their dessert, a scrumptious chocolate pudding.
'The Ministry's providing a couple of cars,' said Mr Weasley. Everyone looked up at him.
'Why?' asked Percy curiously.
'It's because of you, Perce,' said George seriously. 'And there'll be little flags on the bonnets, with HB on them-'
'- for Humungous Bighead,' said Fred.
Emalia nearly choked on her pudding, Fred patted her back gently, grinning down at her as everyone else, excluding Percy and Mrs Weasley, snorted into their pudding.
'Why are the Ministry providing cars, Father?' Percy asked again, in a rather dignified voice.
'Well, as we haven't got one any more,' began Mr Weasley, 'and as I work there, they're doing me a favour…'
'Good job, too,' said Mrs Weasley briskly. 'Do you realise how much luggage you've got between you all? A nice sight you'd be on the Muggle Underground … You are all packed, aren't you?'
After dinner, everyone felt very full and sleepy. One by one they made their way upstairs to their rooms to ensure they had all their belongings packed away.
Emalia was lying on her stomach on Fred's bed, watching the two boys pack away the last of their clothes into their trunks, when they heard a lot of shouting coming from down the hall. Fred and George grinned at each other wickedly, Emalia sighed. 'What have you done?'
'Nothing' said Fred innocently.
'Yet' muttered George.
Emalia laughed, jumping off the bed.
'Hey, where are you going?' asked Fred, pulling her to him. Emalia kissed him gently. George sat on his truck, feigning retching noises with a grin on his face.
'I'm getting out of here before the trouble starts' she said laughing as she ran from the room, pushing George off his trunk onto the ground as she passed by him. Fred creased with laughter, while George sent a few choice words after her.
They had an early start the next morning, and after a wonderfully filling breakfast, they made their way outside to the cars the Ministry had sent. Mrs Weasley, Ginny, Fred, George and Emalia all piled into one car, with Fred instantly pulling Emalia onto his lap.
'Fred! Let her sit down' snapped Mrs Weasley, when she noticed the commotion.
'She is sitting, Mum' said Fred grinning.
'On the seat' retort Mrs Weasley, her eyes flashing. Fred never moved as quick, sliding Emalia off his lap into the seat. Emalia, on the other hand, was trying very hard not to laugh at the interchange between mother and son.
They reached King's Cross with twenty minutes to spare; the Ministry drivers found them all trolleys, unloaded their trunks, touched their hats to Mr Weasley and drove away. Emalia not having a trunk, carried her backpack, until Fred took it off her.
'I told you, I carry your bags' he muttered. Emalia rolled her eyes, but a smile crept onto her face.
They all strolled towards the barrier to platform nine and three quarters, and in pairs, made their way through the barrier. When Emalia ran through with Hermione, Fred was waiting for her, a broad smile on his face.
He quickly grasped her hand, pulling her out of view of his family and friends. They were hidden from view quite easily, as the platform was swarming with students and parents. Fred pulled her close to him and kissed her fiercely.
'I have been waiting to do that for a while' he murmured before kissing her again.
He only pulled away from her when he heard his mother calling him. 'Fred? Where's Fred? Ah, here you are dear …' she said, handing him some sandwiches. 'And I have some here for you too Emalia' she smiled as she handed Emalia the sandwiches she had made for her.
'Thank you so much Mrs Weasley, you really shouldn't have.'
Emalia was pulled into a hug by the older woman, squeezing her tight and gave her a kiss on the cheek. 'Have a good term, try keep Fred and George out of trouble if possible' she sighed.
Emalia grinned, 'I can make no promises Mrs Weasley!' The two of them chuckled before Emalia was pulled by Fred and George towards the train.
When they boarded, they weaved their way through the numerous students clambering through the passageway, eventually finding Angelina, Alicia and Lee sitting in a compartment, chatting away.
George flung open the door, a little too harshly, the glass in the door clattering loudly. The three of them walked in and sat down.
'How was your summer?' asked Lee excitedly. Fred and George regaled their friends with their adventures in Egypt, telling them all about the cursed Muggle skeletons and the insane spells the ancient Egyptian wizards used.
They were about an hour into their journey when Emalia got up to leave.
'Where are you going Em?' asked Alicia curiously, looking up from her Quidditch book.
'Oh, I'm one of the Gryffindor Prefects… Did I not tell you that?' she said.
'You are?! That's great! Congrats! I mean, that makes a lot of sense' said Alicia smiling.
'Yeah, well I have to go to the Head Boy and Girl to get our assignments from them, I will probably have to patrol the train for a while' she said as she opened the door. 'I better get going!'
Emalia closed the door gently behind her, waving at her friends before making her way to the Prefect's carriage. It was expected that Emalia would sit with the other prefects, but then that meant missing out on the fun and conversation with her friends.
When she arrived at the Prefect's carriage, she could see that it was already fairly crowded. She opened the door quietly, hoping to slip in without being noticed. However, just as she closed the door, she made eye contact with Percy, who frowned at her. Emalia sighed as he walked over to her, rather pompously, puffing out his chest. 'You are late, Emalia' he huffed, 'Take a seat, Penelope and I were just about to get started.'
Emalia opened her mouth, about to quip back at him, but decided against it. She took a look around, scowling when she noticed Paisley Parkinson. There was something about her that made Emalia want to continuously hex her.
Then she noticed Adrian, sitting as far away from Paisley as he possibly could, waving for her to join him.
'Hey Em' he said cheerfully when she sat down 'I'm not surprised to see you here.' Emalia grinned at him 'I'm glad you're one of the Slytherin prefects. Though, I am concerned that Paisley is one.'
Adrian chuckled 'Trust me, you are not the only one surprised that she is Prefect. Everyone thought Cordelia Burke would be Prefect ahead of Paisley.'
Emalia rolled her eyes, 'She's going to use this to bully younger students, because she is now in a position of power.' Emalia looked over at Paisley, who was scowling at her. Emalia broke out into a large smile, and waved sweetly at her, which succeeded in angering her further.
Adrian chuckled 'I'll keep an eye on her, don't worry. Just try not to antagonise her.'
Emalia looked at him, pretending to be offended 'Me? Antagonise Paisley? I would never.'
The two of them had to conceal their laughter, as Percy coughed loudly to grab the attention of the carriage. It took him three rather loud coughs to get everyone's attention. He only began to speak when everyone had fallen silent, looking up at him and Penelope expectantly.
'Welcome all Prefects, new and old. This year Penelope and I are your Head Girl and Boy' he said, smiling smugly. 'For now, we just need the Prefects to patrol the train. The fifth year Prefects will take a run through now, with the sixth years following on half an hour later, followed by the seventh year. Your patrol rotations will be passed out after the first week.'
Percy paused, as if to add dramatic effect. Emalia had to try not to laugh, this all felt very rehearsed.
'This is an incredible honour, do not make any of the Professors or Headmaster regret their decision. You are here to uphold the rules of the school, so it is your duty to inform myself, Penelope or any of the teachers of any rule breaking, no matter who they are.' Percy looked at them sternly, Emalia was nearly certain that last comment was meant for her and the twins. She smiled sweetly up at Percy.
'Thank you for your attention. Ok, fifth years if you could make your rounds now, that would be great, remember to confiscate any materials that are not allowed in the Grounds.' Percy clapped his hands, dismissing them.
'Well, he is rather …' started Adrian.
'Full of himself?' suggested Emalia before laughing, 'Yeah, he is.'
The two of them walked out of the carriage, and decided to complete their patrol together, chatting comfortably as they did so.
It was pretty uneventful; most students were just catching up with their friends. The first years were all huddled together in a carriage, looking around them bewildered and scared. Emalia took pity on them; she remembered the nerves of her first day all too well.
She made conversation with a few of them, telling them how wonderful the school is, and when they get sorted into their new house, they will gain family. Her words seemed to calm most of the first years.
'If anyone of you ever needs to talk, it doesn't matter if you end up being in my house or not, I will always be an ear for your problems. Don't be afraid to approach me, or Adrian here. We are not as scary as we look' she said gently. A few of the first years nodded, before huddling back together whispering amongst themselves.
'You're a natural at this' muttered Adrian to her as they left the carriage.
Emalia laughed 'I don't know about that. I just remember what it's like to start somewhere new, not knowing anyone.' She smiled at him, they had arrived back in front of the carriage where Fred and the others were.
'I'll see you around Em' said Adrian, he waved as he walked off, towards the compartment the Slytherin's claimed every year.
Emalia pushed open the door, letting it shut behind her. Fred immediately took her hand and pulled her into his lap. 'I missed you' he murmured as he gently nuzzled against her neck. Emalia felt tingles rush through her body. 'I wasn't gone that long' she responded grinning.
Lee and George were sitting opposite them, making retching noises, Emalia gave them both a sharp kick to the shins, which earned her reproachful looks.
'Who else is prefect Em?' asked Alicia loudly, as Emalia draped her arm around Fred's shoulder. He responded in kind by wrapping his arms tightly around her waist, firmly securing her on his lap.
'Well, its Kenneth and I for Gryffindor, Adrian -' Fred scowled loudly, Emalia rolled her eyes and continued 'and Paisley are Slytherins.'
'Wait…' said Angelina in disbelief, shutting her book, 'Paisley Parkinson is a Prefect?' Emalia nodded; her face completely unimpressed. 'Oh, Cordelia is going to be pissed.' Angelina looked annoyed, her and Cordelia were good friends.
'Who are the other Prefects?' asked Lee.
'Cedric Diggory and Nuala McDermott are the Hufflepuff prefects, and then Mark Abbott and Eliza Drewitt are Ravenclaws' finished Emalia.
'What's a prat like Abbot doing as prefect?' asked George. Fred laughed hard.
Everyone stared at the twins, confused, expecting an elaboration.
'What's wrong with Mark? He seems nice enough' said Angelina.
George smirked at Fred as if to inform the group that it was his story. Fred sighed, but the smile on his face grew exponentially as he considered his words.
'Last year, George and I overheard Abbott being quite disrespectful.'
There was silence as they waited for the rest of the story. Fred just watched them as they waited, grinning at his brother.
'Are you going to tell us Fred?' asked Angelina impatiently.
'So, the last time we played Ravenclaw we kindly reminded him that we do not tolerate that sort of behaviour in Hogwarts.' Fred finished.
'And?' asked Emalia looking at him, her eyebrow raised curiously. The look behind Fred's eye changed somewhat, darkening as if it was something he did not want to share with the wider group. Emalia nodded slightly, to let him know she wouldn't push it in front of their friends.
'And that's it' said Fred, refusing to say anymore on the matter, but his grasp on Emalia became a lot tighter as he pulled her closer to him.
Everyone in the group accepted Fred's explanation, and fell into conversation about their hopes for the Gryffindor Quidditch team this year.
Emalia kissed Fred gently, which he returned before whispering in her ear 'I will tell you the whole story later, I just didn't want to share it with everyone.' Emalia nodded before kissing him again.
The train sped on, with the friends all enjoying their time together so much that they did not notice the stark change of weather. When they had set out from King's Cross, it had been a bright sunny day, with no clouds in the sky, but now it was raining heavily, and the sky was gradually darkening.
It was only when the lanterns flickered into life all along the corridors and over the luggage racks, that they noticed this sharp change in weather.
'How long have we been on this train!' exclaimed George, 'It looks like its already nightfall.'
Emalia turned in Fred's lap to look out the window, frowning at the darkness outside.
'We're slowing' pointed out Angelina, she too was looking out the window. It was true, the train was getting slower and slower. As the noise of the pistons fell away, the wind and rain sounded louder than ever against the windows.
'No, we can't be stopping… We shouldn't be near Hogwarts yet' said Emalia shaking her head. She got up out of Fred's lap, with some resistance, he tried to keep her in place, but she persisted. She made her way to the door of the compartment, when the train suddenly came to a stop with a jolt. Then without warning, all the lamps went out and the whole train was plunged into darkness.
'What's happening?' whispered Alicia in a frightened, hushed voice.
Emalia took her wand out of her robes 'Lumos' she muttered. A bright light shone out of the tip of her wand, illuminating the compartment. She could see the fear and uncertainty on her friends' face.
Her eyes sought Fred's, he too took out his wand, repeating Emalia's spell.
'Stay here, I'm going to get everyone back into their carriages, then I will go to check with the driver what's happening,' said Emalia as she opened the door.
'I'm coming with you' said Fred, standing up and rushing towards the door.
Emalia was about to protest, but when Fred gripped her hand, she knew there was no point.
The two of them closed the door firmly behind them, there were a few students stumbling about in the dark.
'Get back to your carriage now' said Emalia as she walked up to them.
'Why should we listen to you!' said a young Slytherin cheekily.
'Well, if you'd like me to take points off Slytherin before the term has officially started, then by all means go ahead. And I'll throw in reporting you to Snape as well, I'm sure he won't be impressed with you' said Emalia, her face scrunched in annoyance.
The young Slytherin looked taken aback, but when he noticed the light glint off the Prefect badge on Emalia's robes, he quickly turned and made his way back into his carriage. There were not many students out and about, but Emalia dipped her head into each compartment, telling everyone to stay put.
Emalia turned back to Fred, 'I think we should head back to the others.'
He nodded curtly, the grip on her hand, as tight as ever, Emalia was gripping onto his hand just as hard.
When they arrived back in their compartment, everyone looked to them for answers. 'We eh, didn't make it to the driver' said Emalia. The two of them had just sat back into their seats, when the door creaked open.
Everyone gasped. Emalia felt as if all the oxygen was being sucked out of the cramped room. A cloaked figure appeared at the doorway of the room, bringing with it an intense cold, the type of cold that nipped at your bones sucking away all the warmth from your body.
Emalia shivered, pain shot up her arm, spreading to her back, a small groan of pain escaped her lips. Fred wrapped his arms around her tightly.
The figure closed the door, leaving them alone again.
'W- w- wh- what w- was t- th-that?' stammered Alicia, her face pale and frightened.
'A Dementor' whispered Emalia weakly, she felt terrible, and her arm was on fire. Fred holding onto her was the only thing keeping her present.
A minute later, Draco Malfoy came running into their compartment, looking like he was about to wet himself with fear. Emalia, pushing through her own pain, managed to calm him down. The lights came back on, and the Hogwarts Express chugged to life and started moving again.
Emalia, once she had steadied herself, walked Draco Malfoy back to the Slytherin compartment, checking on others as she did.
When she arrived back, she noted that everyone seemed to have cheered up slightly. Emalia sat back on Fred's lap, she felt drained. Fred, sensing this, led the conversation between them all, allowing Emalia some time to relax.
They finally arrived at the station in Hogsmeade, the weather was so miserable and wet, that there was a commotion as everyone tried to grab their belongings and make their way to the carriages as quick as possible.
Fred was worried about Emalia, she still looked incredibly pale and looked like she was about to lose consciousness. He kept close by her, on the off chance she collapsed but he knew that she was strong.
'Are you ok?' he whispered to her on the carriage ride up to the castle. Emalia smiled gently at him, 'I am fine, Freddie' she said softly. Fred smiled down at her, and kissed the top of her forehead, before kissing her on the lips.
'Can't you wait until you can go find somewhere quiet in the castle' teased Lee, grinning at the two of them.
'You're just jealous, mate' laughed Fred, before kissing Emalia once more.
The carriage trundled along, passing through the wrought-iron gates, flanked by stone columns. Two hooded Dementors stood guard either side. Emalia shuddered unconsciously as they passed by them, Fred's grip on her tightened significantly.
'You don't need to hold me so tight' she whispered at him 'Breathing is usually desired, and it's hard when you're squeezing the life out of me.' She managed a weak smile, Fred looked down at her, concern and worry flooded his deep brown eyes, as he loosened his grip.
When they arrived outside the castle, there was a rush up the steps, everyone desperate to get out of the rain and the cold, pushing into the Entrance Hall which was lit with flaming torches, spreading warmth amongst the students.
Everyone made their way into the Great Hall, glancing up at the enchanted ceiling, which was black and cloudy tonight, as they made their way to their house seats.
Emalia glanced up at the teachers table, all of their faces were grim, though as the students filed in, they tried to plaster on a more positive and upbeat demeanour.
Albus was watching as everyone entered, a slight frown on his face, though it was hardly noticeable. His eyes met her own, taking in her appearance, his eyes widening with concern. She smiled up at him, shaking her head, trying to let him know that she was fine.
Professor Flitwick brought out the Sorting Hat, and oversaw the sorting ceremony, much to everyone's surprise. Though, when the sorting ceremony finished, Professor McGonagall entered the Hall, closely followed by Harry and Hermione. They slipped in beside Ron, Emalia was about to try and get their attention, but at that moment, the Headmaster stood up to speak.
'Welcome!' said Dumbledore, the candlelight shimmering on his beard. 'Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I have a few things to say to you all, and as one of them is very serious, I think it best to get it out of the way before you become befuddled by our excelled feast …'
Dumbledore cleared his throat, his happy demeanour becoming much more serious. 'As you will all be aware after their search of the Hogwarts Express, our school is presently playing host to some of the Dementors of Azkaban, who are here on Ministry of Magic business.
'They are stationed at every entrance to the grounds, and while they are with us, I must make it plain that nobody is to leave school without permission. Dementors are not to be fooled by tricks or disguises – or even Invisibility cloaks' he added blandly.
'It is not in the nature of a Dementor to understand pleading, or excuses. I therefore warn each and everyone of you, give them no reason to harm you. I look to the Prefects, and our new Head Boy and Girl, to make sure that no student runs afoul of the Dementors.'
Percy, hearing the Headmaster's words, puffed out his chest again and stared around impressively.
Dumbledore paused; he looked very seriously around the Hall, and nobody moved or made a sound.
'On a happier note,' he continued 'I am pleased to welcome two new teachers to our ranks this year. Firstly, Professor Lupin, who has kindly consented to fill the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.'
There was some scattered, rather unenthusiastic, applause. Professor Lupin looked particularly shabby next to all the other teachers in their best robes.
'As to our second new appointment,' Dumbledore continued, as the lukewarm applause for Professor Lupin died away, 'well, I am sorry to tell you that Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, retired at the end of last year in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs. However, I am delighted to say that his place will be filled by none other than Rubeus Hagrid, who has agreed to take on this teaching job in addition to his gamekeeping duties.'
Applause erupted from the Hall, which was tumultuous at the Gryffindor table in particular. Hagrid was ruby red in the face, staring down at his enormous hands, his wide grin hidden in the tangle of his black beard.
'Well, I think that's everything of importance,' said Dumbledore. 'Let the feast begin!'
The golden plates and goblets before them filled suddenly with food and drink. It was a delicious feast; the Hall echoed with talk, laughter and the clatter of knives and forks. Emalia was just tucking into her dessert when Percy approached her, an air of pomposity and authority about him.
'Emalia' he said, 'You and Kenneth will be looking after the new first years. Please escort them to the Common Room and give them the password after the feast. The password is Fortuna Major.' He walked off, not giving Emalia a chance to respond. She quickly finished her food, she felt much better after eating and being inside in the warmth.
At long last, when all the platters lay empty, Dumbledore gave the word that it was time for them all to go to bed. Emalia, leaving behind her group of friends, sought out Kenneth and the two of them made a beeline to the door of the Great Hall.
'GRYFFINDOR FIRST YEARS OVER HERE PLEASE' she bellowed over the loud hum of conversation coming from the rest of the student body. The first year Gryffindors all congregated around the two Prefects.
'I am Emalia Potter; this is Kenneth Towler, and we are two of the six Gryffindor Prefects,' she said smiling, looking over all the scared and apprehensive faces of the first years in front of her. 'We are here to help you, so if you have any issues, don't be afraid to come to us. Now, if you follow us, we will bring you to the Common Room, your new home for the next seven years.'
Emalia and Kenneth led the first years to the Common Room, they were scurrying along behind them, as if they were terrified, they would lose the two older students. Emalia ensured that the first years knew where the trick step on the moving stairways was, so that they would never get stuck there.
When they arrived at the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room, they were greeted by the Fat Lady, wearing a bright pink dress. 'Good evening Fat Lady' said Emalia smiling at her, 'We are here with the new Gryffindor first-years.'
'Welcome to Hogwarts' drawled the Fat Lady, who looked entirely uninterested that there were new students. 'To get into the Common Room, you will need the password… Which is?'
'Fortuna Major' said Kenneth.
Emalia turned to the first years, 'Remember that password, the password will change every so often, so keep an eye on the noticeboard in the Common Room.'
Emalia clambered through the portrait, followed by the dozen first years, eagerly pushing their way through, one or two of them stumbling over the step into the Common Room. Their eyes went wide as they walked into the heart of the busy Common Room. Some of the older Gryffindors, smiled and waved at the newer ones.
When they reached the stairs leading to the dormitories, Kenneth escorted the boys to their dormitories, while Emalia brought the girls' up to theirs, helping them get settled in.
Twenty minutes later, Emalia made her way back down to the Common Room, letting the first years settle in for the night and give them a chance to get to know one another. When she arrived down in the Common Room, she found it was mostly empty; but noticed Fred and George, who were sitting on the couch in front of the fireplace.
Emalia walked over to them, putting her hands on her hips she tried to act as serious as she could. 'Mr Weasley and Mr Weasley! As your prefect, I am ordering you to go to bed right now!'
Fred and George looked at each other, their eyebrows cocked, before looking up at Emalia. The three of them collapsed into hearty laughter, Fred stood up and pulled Emalia over his shoulder, parading her around, her arse up in the air.
Emalia was laughing, hitting Fred in the back. 'Put me down Fred!' she laughed.
Fred, making his way to the stairs 'Oh, I am only doing what you ordered, darling' he said smugly as he carried her up the stairs. She was still thrown over his shoulder, and as she disappeared up the stairs, she could see George howling with laughter on the couch, clenching his sides.
Fred put her down outside of the main hallway leading to the dormitories.
Emalia slapped his chest gently, smiling 'You're lucky I love you Fred Weasley!'
Fred grinned down at her. 'Trust me,' he murmured 'I know' before leaning down and kissing her.
Emalia deepened the kiss, pulling Fred closer to her by his tie. He smiled into the kiss and wrapped his arms around her. When they broke away, the two of them smiled coyly at each other.
'How was prefect duty?' asked Fred as he leaned against the wall, shoving his hands into his pockets. He had decided to change the topic at hand, to distract from the electric energy sparking between them.
'The first years, a lot of them are terrified, but excited. It's cute' she said smiling warmly.
'Are you gonna give me detention?' teased Fred.
Emalia laughed, 'I don't think it's worth my time to try.' Her expression changed from that of amusement to something more suggestive. 'Though, I think I could find a way to… persuade you to be good' she said coyly.
Fred's eyes darkened; his eyebrow raised in pleasant surprise 'Oh really?' he hummed quietly.
'Ahuh' murmured Emalia as she stood on her tippy toes to kiss Fred. It was a brief kiss, but it portrayed all that she needed. She pulled away and ran towards her dorm, knowing Fred would not follow her. 'Goodnight Freddie' she called, grinning back at him.
Fred chuckled 'Goodnight Em.' He turned on his heel and made his way towards the boys' dormitories, meeting George on his way.
'Back so soon? I would have thought the two of you would have been snogging for a solid half hour before I saw you again' he teased his brother.
Fred laughed 'Come on Georgie, we have a night of planning ahead of us. Filch was giving us evils through the feast and I figure we should give him a proper start of term welcome.'
The two boys turned on their heels, heads together, planning the beginning of their new term of pranking.
