When I grow up I want to be loving.
Elizabeth woke up with the sun's rays tickling her face, prompting her to turn her face better in the pillow to cover herself. But she instead found an arm holding her head and she opted to lightly rub her face against it, grumbling a little from the interrupted sleep.
Her senses slowly began to awaken and everything around her became clearer.
Against her back was the muscular body of Levi, still naked from the previous night, who with his free arm brushed his fingertips against the skin of her arm, drawing abstract and indefinite shapes.
Now awake, she let herself go to a relaxed and happy smile, but continuing to keep her eyes closed to enjoy that sweet warmth.
"Good morning." she murmured, crouching better against Levi's body and letting herself be embraced from behind.
"Good morning." he answered leaving a small kiss on the back of her neck and holding her a little against himself with affection. He had woken up about half an hour before her and found her still completely asleep, so sweet that he didn't feel like waking her up.
Not having work to do, he had decided to enjoy, for the first time in his life, some well-deserved rest, and had limited himself to turning around better and cautiously to pamper her woman a little while waiting for her to wake up.
His wife.
It almost didn't seem real. The 'yes' to his proposal had made him happy but somehow it hadn't changed everything, they were always the same, but now it was all official.
It was all real.
She had become his wife and he her husband. That proposal had materialized.
"What time is it?" she asked moving her head against his hand, which had just raised to caress her as she loved so much.
"After ten. We fell asleep late." he replied feeling her smile against the palm of his hand.
"Yeah, my husband kept me busy for a long time last night." she murmured, shivering slightly at the sensation of Levi's fingertips moving up and down her arm, causing her to contract slightly. With that gesture, however, she not only stretched her neck a little but pushed herself even further against the man behind her. But she wouldn't have succumbed to those provocations without playing the same game. "I don't think I'll be able to walk for at least a couple of days."
"Just a couple? I have to put in more effort then." he answered grinning and moving his hand down her collarbones and then beside her breast, under the blanket.
"Why? Can you do better?"
"I can show you."
Elizabeth whirled around, finding two gray eyes in front of her looking at her as if she were the most beautiful thing in the world. She had never really dwelt long on his way of looking at her; she knew it wasn't the same one as he looked anyone else, but at the same time she had never paid so much attention to it. Now she really understood what Erd and Petra meant when they told her that he looked at her completely in love.
And under that gaze she felt truly beautiful.
Many men told her, even Levi actually did, but she never cared about appearing and didn't take too much effort to come out polished, she just needed to be clean and tidy. But Levi was looking at her as if there was nothing else in the world but her.
In that remote little house there were just the two of them.
She raised a hand up to reach Levi's face and lightly caressed his cheek before pulling it lightly against hers until their lips came closer.
At first they touched each other with a sweet, chaste contact, until they let go more and more and let their tongues meet in each other's mouth.
But as soon as Levi pressed lightly to lay her under him, Elizabeth's stomach made a slight growl, making her laugh against his lips.
Levi left her a last quick kiss on her lips as he threw himself back on the mattress but also hinting at her smile.
"You didn't eat before the wedding, did you?" he asked already knowing her answer. Probably, between her and Hange, they were so excited that they won't even remember to eat anything. Not that he wasn't, but Erwin had remembered to let him eat, perhaps aware that food would then be the least of their thoughts.
"Do you think I could think about food? The only thing my mind was processing was the fact that I was getting married."
Levi smiled at that statement, his heart beating a little faster in his chest with emotion. He had always hated cheesy things but she was the right mix of everything, without bothering him she made him appreciate everything.
He started to answer but she was quicker and sat up to lean over him and leave him another kiss on his lips, then passed over him to get out of the bed but on his side, closer to the door of the room.
"I'm going to cook something, you can stay in bed a little longer, you know. After the past night you deserve it."
Elizabeth's statement clouded Levi's brain for a moment and he no longer knew what to say. He knew she was going down the stairs because he could hear the noise but he was processing nothing but the fact that his woman was just as satisfied as he was.
After the first time, they didn't fall asleep right away but stayed awake talking, making up for the little time they had lost as a couple to go and save Eren and organize the coup. They had been so busy that they hadn't found much time to be together except for a few stolen kisses and a few nights together but not with the same peace of mind they had at that moment.
And in the end they had spent their wedding night making love several times.
He stretched a bit in bed, remembering one day when Farlan asked him what his first time in bed with a woman was like. Isabel had not yet joined them and he, after her arrival, was more careful to the words he used in her presence and categorically avoided the subject of 'sex'. Sure, Isabel wasn't a child and she knew what it was but Farlan was too polite to talk about certain things in her presence.
Levi replied with a shrug: "I've never slept with any woman."
And Farlan was quite impressed. He remembered the astonishment on his face after that revelation but he was never interested in women. He never cared about anything in particular other than surviving and keeping things clean. There was nothing that brought him particular joy.
Except that apple Elizabeth had left her that day. He never admitted it to anyone, but that simple gesture made his heart beat: why would a little girl gave up her own food to give it to him, who had only helped her get up? And then her voice...
After Isabel's revelation, when they heard her sing, it seemed even more melodious.
There was always the same note of melancholy in her voice but it was more delicate.
At the time he hadn't even bothered to inquire too much, he didn't want to know what Farlan had felt or why he liked it; he found sex somehow something dirty, with all that sweat and those humors... yet with Elizabeth it had come all by itself, his body had moved as if he was no longer in control and he understood perfectly what he meant Farlan when he talked about it.
And he was right. There was no stronger emotion he felt when he was clinging to her and he felt her moan against his lips or say his name out of pleasure; that had become his refuge, the only place where he no longer had to care about anything but the two of them together.
And now he knew what to answer him.
It was wonderful.
When he decided to let go those thoughts, his nose caught an inviting smell and he got up, wearing only pants, to join her in the kitchen.
Only when he saw her turned around, intent on cutting fruit, he noticed that she was wearing his shirt, which covered her body up to her buttocks.
And he leaned against the wall to look at her.
If that was the image he would see every morning as a simple married man then he didn't mind at all.
She was so focused on what she was doing that she didn't realize he was there, humming a song he hadn't heard in far too long. He remembered every word of that melody, he heard it when they still lived in the underground and she took refuge to sing.
Isabel had become something of a fan of her, so much that she forced them every time to go and secretly hear her, not that it was really a problem for them. Isabel never asked for anything but that and it was also a pleasure for his ears. She had a beautiful voice.
And he was listening it right now.
The sound was very relaxing and she was singing with a lot less melancholy.
He approached her slowly, then making his chest adhere to her back and holding her with his arm along her pelvis while with his lips he left a kiss on her neck, making her smile.
Elizabeth stopped cutting an apple to focus on the hug her husband was giving her. He wasn't a particularly outgoing man when they were in the barracks and surrounded by soldiers and duties, but when they were completely alone, usually protected from the night, he let himself be pampered as she preferred.
"What are you preparing, Mrs. Ackerman?" he asked, remarking a little more on her last two words and feeling her smile against his cheek.
After resting his chin on her shoulder Levi was able to see her hands intent on cutting with delicacy and skill. Now that he thought about it, this was the first time he'd ever seen her cooking for him. The cake made on his birthday had been made by surprise and he had only seen it when the work was done.
"Mmm, yes. I like the way it sounds." she murmured slightly moving her pelvis backwards and feeling her husband's grip increase with a different heat, a more passionate one. "Levi Ackerman's wife."
"You will drive me crazy, sooner or later."
Levi's voice drooped slightly from wanting her, but she needed to eat and if he had made it with her at that moment he would have distracted her further from eating.
Yet that sentence had thrilled him more than he wanted to admit. It was the fact that she had specified that she was his wife, in particular, that made him happy. She made him happy.
"It still doesn't seem real to me, you know." she then exclaimed, ceasing to provoke him only for a further call of her stomach, only more silent. But that didn't stop her from telling him what she thought.
"It's a step towards that life together."
"It's not that I'm complaining about this. Beyond the titans and all, I have a sexy Captain who makes me incredibly happy."
"It depends which captain you're referring to." Levi answered her making her turn in his embrace to look at her face before kissing her on the lips. Elizabeth put her hands behind Levi's neck after dropping the knife on the counter, regardless of what she was preparing.
"To one in particular, in fact. I love him so much that I even married him." she answered when they parted to catch their breath. They were breathing heavily, fatigued by the lack of oxygen but eager to start over as soon as possible.
"He will be a lucky man then." he concluded before taking her lips between his again and closing his eyes, savoring her flavor full of her and holding her closer with more strength.
For a moment he remembered when, upon joining the Survey Corps, people believed she had made it because they were having sex.
At the time it was completely false and it bothered him a lot, although she had managed to ignite that desire in him before he could even notice it. But now... now it was true.
And there was nothing that made him more peaceful.
He would never regret that choice.
It was strange for both of them to spend the afternoon doing nothing; him sitting on the couch with her head resting on his legs as he stroked her blonde hair.
It was a different sensation than usual, but for some strange reason Levi didn't mind; it was the first time he had sat quietly without really doing anything, with no thought on his mind and no burdens on his shoulders.
The work was left behind and was waiting for his return but he had promised both Elizabeth and Erwin that during their time there he would not think about it. And he intended to keep his promise.
He looked down at her and found her staring at him, but without her usual mischief; she seemed to be remembering something about him and he couldn't help but wonder what was causing that look on her face. She was so sweet that she looked like a child.
He couldn't tell himself how much time had passed, lost in each other's gaze, before she decided to speak to appease his curiosity.
"Max once told me that when I got married he would look grimly at my spouse and threaten him. To avoid him making me suffer, you know."
Levi raised a skeptical eyebrow at the thought of finding someone who really had the courage to challenge him. But then he also thought about the fact that this was the same person who had chosen her despite his mother, his security and his family, with nothing but themselves.
"Would I have been threatened by your brother?"
"Who knows if he would have done it even knowing that you are humanity's strongest soldier..." Elizabeth thought looking at him for a moment in silence before bursting out laughing. "Probably yes."
Levi agreed with her. For her, yes, he would. And he understood him; he too would do and give anything to ensure the safety and happiness of the woman who had become her wife for less than 24 hours.
"He cared about you, he would have done it."
"And you would have let him."
But it wasn't a question and Levi was impressed. She knew it, she didn't even need to ask him; she knew him enough to know how far he would go for her, even putting aside his pride and taking threats in absolute silence. Kind of like he had done with Erd when they admitted their relationship with the team. He had looked at him that day and, although he could have punished him for insubordination, he had told him that he would never make her suffer. That was the only affirmation of them that he allowed to make public with them, they did not kiss in front of the others, nor did they hug but he gave her small attentions that only a careful and aware eye would have noticed.
"I would not have been threatened in vain. I would have reassured him." he answered running his fingers again between those soft blond threads. They had grown back, and then cut again, since Misha had cut them off and now they were back to under her shoulder blades, forcing her to tie them up every day. "I have no intention of making you suffer."
Elizabeth smiled at him, this time more moved as she did every time he decided to express his feelings to her, and she lifted herself up and went to sit in his arms.
"I know. That's why I married you, because I love you." she answered before slowly lowering herself and gently kissing his lips. "And for your body."
"My body?"
Elizabeth laughed once more and gave him another quick kiss.
"Yes, look at you. Do you have any idea how difficult it is for me to always be next to you moving and doing things, especially when you are without a jacket..." she began, lowering her voice and letting her words take on a much more provocative inclination. "... and your neck is in plain sight."
"You start to scare me." Levi joked, closing his eyes as Elizabeth's lips left a kiss on the skin of his uncovered neck.
"I don't care." she replied quickly before kissing him and then sitting up again. "And instead Isabel would have threatened me?"
"No. She was your fan."
"A fan?"
Elizabeth did not immediately understand what he was referring to but then she remembered when, still on her roof, she confessed him that she often took refuge in a remote corner to sing and he admitted to having heard her sing.
"She liked your voice. She probably would have asked you to sing for her every day. And she would have jumped a lot with enthusiasm."
"Would she have shown more enthusiasm than you?"
"Hey I was very excited while I was marrying you. And I still am." he replied, indulging her hold on his shoulders as she settled better in his arms. Her eyes were so bright that the green seemed almost made of crystal, while the brown one was even deeper, dark like the past they both hid but flanked by the green light like the hope they both clung to.
"Erwin noticed it too. He said your eyes were shining."
"Your fault."
"I'll take responsibility for it Captain."
Year 848- November.
"Levi ..."
Elizabeth and Levi were sitting at his desks drinking a cup of hot tea, letting the drink warm them from the chill that could be felt that day.
It had been a couple of weeks since Levi had noticed a particular turmoil in his woman; she only did it when there was no one else but sometimes she seemed lost in her own thoughts. He had to admit that he had also started to wonder if it wasn't their hidden relationship that caused her thoughts, if she maybe preferred a relationship in the sunlight; or if something else happened to her in that laboratory that she didn't want to talk about.
On her return she had told him everything, especially about the experiment and how it made her feel, but he felt there was more. And that something was making her suffer as well as giving her feelings of guilt. But guilt for what?
He had been silent until then, waiting for her to feel ready to talk to him and, by the way she tortured her fingers around the steaming cup, that moment had come.
"Would you like to have children someday?"
Levi blinked a couple of times, looking deeply at her as the heart in his chest began to pound.
He had never thought about it, he had never cared about it and he didn't want to become a father either, not in that world at least, but now that she was asking him that question something had clicked.
He felt... fear.
In his mind the scenario of a family began to form with her as the mother of his children but he also knew that that would be a bad idea...
She must have noticed because she settled better into her chair, shaking her head.
"No." she asserted confidently, causing Levi's doubts, still silent, to subside. "I'm not pregnant. And I won't be in the future either."
"What do you mean?" Levi asked worried by her tone that had dropped and saddened at the last sentence. He wasn't clear of what was going on but he felt it was hurting her a lot and he didn't like it.
"I… talked to Hange on my birthday. The experiment that was done to me made me infertile. So if you want to become a father, I couldn't give you children."
Levi swallowed, listening carefully to Elizabeth's words. He didn't believe she wanted children, she had never told him about it, but evidently it troubled her that he could refuse her for it.
And, indeed, only then did he realize that she had never become pregnant despite their numerous unions. He clenched a fist, suppressing the desire to punch someone, focusing completely on the woman sitting in front of him.
She looked so small and helpless in that moment that he just wanted to hold her in his arms.
"Is this what causes you so much suffering?"
Elizabeth's eyes widened slightly in amazement: he was not angry, nor did she see disappointment in his eyes.
"Well yes... I can't give you children."
"We can adopt them like Frank and Marie did with you. There are many kids who have no one."
"But..." Elizabeth didn't know what to answer, his face was almost impassive, as if it didn't bother him but she could still see something in his eyes. At first he was upset, but when she told him she wasn't pregnant he almost seemed to have been upset for a few moments until he realized that was the cause of her discomfort. "I don't..."
"Liz."
His tone of voice was particularly sweet. Levi stood up and joined her, lowering himself in front of her before she could get up from her chair, looking into her eyes so that she could see his sincerity. "It doesn't matter. I don't want children if it means putting you in danger. Can't you have any? Then I don't care, you are enough for me."
With that particular memory in mind Elizabeth shook her head, bringing her attention to Levi as he emerged from the bathroom, covered only around his hips and his skin still wet from a quick shower. And, damn, he was inviting...
"Can I ask you something?" she asked biting her lip and struggling to pay attention to anything other than his abs.
"You're my wife and you still ask me a similar question?"
Elizabeth smiled at him, focusing a few moments on having been called his wife before starting to speak again.
"Will you ever tell Mikasa that you are related?"
"I'm not sure." he admitted calmly as he rubbed his hair to dry. "It's not an important thing."
"Maybe it could be a good thing instead. As far as we know, you are the only two Ackerman alive and only you have this particular power."
Levi looked at her without interrupting that movement and he almost laughed: she was trying to entertain a serious conversation but could not stop looking at his bare chest.
"Yes, I've thought about it, but at the moment it's better not."
"I'm not going to convince you to do something you don't want. But I still think this thing is extraordinary." she murmured resting her chin on her hand, not even trying to hide her provocative and mischievous gaze. "Well... if we had a child, it would inherit your powers."
"And you will force me to teach it to use them." he said putting down his towel to walk over her, seated on the edge of the bed with her legs crossed.
"No. I'd force you to behave like a father, it's different."
Those speeches gave him a strange feeling. The first time she had told him she was not fertile he had felt strange, in the end he was almost upset that he might not have children with her someday -and when, for a moment, he had believed that she was pregnant he had felt strangely happy- but Hange had given them new hope, and even though it would take years, one day they could become parents and have their own baby.
"How did we go from Mikasa to our child?"
"Well… Hange wasn't completely wrong that day. We have transformed ourselves a bit into their parents." she replied referring to a particular joke that the team leader had made when the two were alone with the youngsters, alluding to the fact that they looked like their parents.
"Do you want to take them in case we can't have ours?" he asked ironically lowering himself and placing his hands on her knees, making her shiver.
"Not a bad idea. I shouldn't suffer from pregnancy and childbirth."
"We can always keep trying." he concluded before capturing her lips in a passionate kiss, laying her under him.
