CHAPTER 41
"You can stay in here, Love. I will stay in one of the guest rooms for the night."
"I should probably just go home." She said
Klaus wasn't sure how to respond. He didn't want to pressure her at all but he would feel better if she was under his roof. "Whatever you would feel most comfortable doing, Love." Klaus gave her a small smile. "I can drive you home if you'd like."
"This really sucks." Caroline said half laughing half crying. "I know if I go home I won't stop thinking about how hurt you look everytime you look at me and if I stay…I am not really sure I feel completely safe here." Caroline ran the back of her hand over her cheek; wiping away the few tears that had rolled down from her eyes.
"First of all, Sweetheart. I swear to you, you are safe here." Klaus said taking a few steps closer to her but still making sure to give her space. "And second please don't worry about me."
Caroline let out a fake laugh as more tears fell to her cheek. "I have tried to stop thinking about it but it is no use." She said as even more tears poured out of her eyes.
All Klaus wanted to do was wrap her in his arms and never let her leave. "Sweetheart, please stop crying." Klaus pleaded, his voice breaking because he felt so helpless. "You have no idea how difficult it is to see you this upset and not be able to comfort you."
Caroline stood there; confused and in tears for a second just staring at the man in front of her. The man everyone hated. The man she was supposed to hate but a part of her just wouldn't let her. She took a few steps closer to him and flung her arms around his neck.
Klaus was stunned for a second but quickly wrapped his arms around her and pulled her as close to him as he could. He hated how much pain she was in and wished more than anything that he could take it away. "Please, stay here, Sweetheart." He whispered as he placed one hand gently on the back of her head. "I can't bare the thought of you being alone tonight when you are this upset." He paused. "I will sleep in my chair and if you want to leave I will take you home immediately; just say the word."
Caroline pulled away just enough to be able to see Klaus' face. "I want to say no. That I don't feel safe here or that I can't kick you out of your own bed." She paused and let out a small laugh. "But…"
Klaus took advantage of the pause and carefully; while still keeping one arm wrapped around her led her to his bed. "Go ahead, Sweetheart get it." Caroline reluctantly sat on his bed and Klaus turned to get one of his chairs from the other side of the room. He pulled the chair close to the bed but again leaving enough space so she wouldn't feel crowded.
Caroline laid down and pulled the blankets over her. His bed was extremely comfortable. She turned her head slightly and breathed in his sent from the pillow, his scent was…relaxing, and that just confused her even more. She moved around a bit more until she was comfortable before she let her eyes land on Klaus. His eyes were a mix of concern, and pain…and then she thought when the hell she learned to read his eyes.
"Close your eyes, Love. You have absolutely nothing to worry about while you are here."
Caroline gave Klaus a small smile then closed her eyes and did her best to relax.
Caroline opened her eyes and immediately looked around the room. It wasn't until she saw Klaus asleep in the nearby chair that she knew where she was and what had happened the night before. She let herself stare at a sleeping Klaus for a few minutes. She had no idea what time he went to sleep but she was sure he was up for a while after she did. She didn't want to wake him, especially after he was being so kind the night before so she made up her mind to just relax in bed until he woke up. She didn't lay there long before she heard Kol and Rebekah in the hall arguing about something.
Klaus jumped up and flew over to the door without even noticing that Caroline was awake. "Would you two kindly shut up!" Klaus growled softly. After closing the door to his room he made his way back over to his chair. As soon as he sat down and looked at Caroline he saw that she was awake. "I'm sorry, Love. My siblings can be quite annoying at times."
Caroline smiled. "I've been up. I just didn't want to wake you."
Klaus seemed to like that answer because he smiled back. "Did you sleep well?"
"I did. Thank you for letting me stay." Klaus smiled back at her. It was silent between them for a few minutes. Caroline bit her bottom lip.
"What is it Sweetheart?"
It was almost like he could read her mind. "Will you do me a favor?"
"Anything, Love." He responded immediately.
"Will you tell me about…us?"
"What would you like to know?"
Caroline pulled the blankets tighter around her. "I don't know. I don't even know what to ask."
"Well, I could show you…if you trust me enough to do so, of course." Klaus offered.
Caroline dropped her eyes down and thought about what he was offering. Letting a vampire into your brain was something she had never done and it wasn't something she had ever done to another vampire or human. She has compelled before obviously but this was different.
"If you would rather not…"
Caroline cut him off. "It is really the best way to get some answers to the questions that have been whirling around in my mind."
Klaus stood up form the chair and stood up beside the bed. "Do you mind, Love? He asked looking at the small empty space near her on the bed. Caroline didn't say a word but scooted over, giving Klaus a little more room. Klaus got in the bed on top of the blankets so he could still give her a little space. He laid on his side and propped himself up on his elbow. Klaus very slowly and very carefully placed his free hand gently on the side of Caroline's head. Caroline stiffened at first but relaxed a moment later. She closed her eyes and tried to relax. Klaus stared at her for a moment before he began.
Klaus walked her through step by step from the moment she lost her memory. He hated that he had to make her relive Tyler biting her but it was part of the story and he never wanted to lie to her. He felt her start to panic so Klaus immediately pulled his hand away to stop the memories.
"Tyler bit me…again!" She said as she sat up.
"I'm sorry, Love." More tears started to run down her face. "Did you want to stop?"
"You saved me." She said softly as she wiped the tears off her cheek. Klaus smiled at her bit didn't say anything. After a few more seconds she laid back down and closed her eyes. "I'm ready."
Klaus continued and made it all the way to the Miss Mystic Parade before pulling away again.
Caroline opened her eyes. "What's wrong?" She asked. She looked up at Klaus and his eyes were watering, it really did break her heart.
"I'm sorry, Love." He said softly with a fake smile. He quickly wiped his cheek with the back of his hand. "It's just.."
"It's alright." She said softly as she carefully placed her hand on top of his. Klaus looked down at her hand on his and was a little shocked. Although small the gesture meant a lot to him. "I am sure the witch you found will fix this whole mess." When Klaus didn't respond Caroline continued. "We don't have to continue if you don't want to." He said as her thumb rubbed the skin on his hand. "I should probably head home anyway, my mom might be wondering where I am." She said with a small laugh.
Klaus didn't want her to leave. Even though she didn't remember anything he loved having her near him. He decided that reliving everything he had lost was a small amount to pay for her company. "No, let's continue." He gave her a small smile.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure. Lie back down, Love."
Caroline laid back down on Klaus' pillow and Klaus once again placed his hand on the side of her head.
Klaus finished replaying the rest of their story for Caroline. He reluctantly pulled his hand away from her head and just stared at her for a moment, she looked so beautiful and it was killing him that she didn't remember how amazing they were together.
"Wow." Caroline said as she opened her eyes. Caroline rolled on her side so she was facing Klaus. "Thank you." She said softly.
"Sweetheart I would do just about anything you asked me to." Klaus said with a smile, his eyes never leaving her.
"I should probably head home now." Caroline said but made no move to get out of his bed. Caroline sighed. "Be honest, do you think this witch can fix me?"
"I don't know." He said after a few moments of silence. "But I promise you that if she is unsuccessful I will not stop until I find another solution."
