Zach POV

I woke up to a familiar groggy feeling. My head was leaning on the car window, the sky was still dark.

'Oh good, you're awake' I glanced at Cam, her eyes were focused on the road but she looked tired.

'Where are we?' I sat up stretching. All I could see around me was the endless highway.

'Georgia' Cam answered flatly.

'You've been driving non-stop?' I asked. I didn't need Cam to answer to know that was a yes. I leaned back in the seat, closing my eyes to stop the oncoming headache.

'You're going to have to stop for fuel soon'

'These cars have two fuel supplies. We're good' She replied

'I'm Goode. You're Morgan' I peaked out of one eye to gage her reaction. But nothing. She didn't even roll her eyes. I turned to look at her, studying her profile.

'Why?' I asked.

'Why what?'

'You brought me along with you because you said you're the only one who won't stop me..so...why did you sleep patch me again?'

'Because I wanted some peace and quiet' She glanced at me quickly 'Plus I'm much less likely to hurt you if you're asleep' A small smile curled at the corner of her lips. I'll take this little victory, I don't want to push her too much or she'll shut me out again.

'Where are we heading?' I asked. Cam took a deep breath. She looked over at me.

'There's a fairground on the coast, my father took me there when I was little. I thought it was a dad-and-daughter-day but turns out it was a dad-on-a-mission-day and I was his cover'

'That's when you saw the list, right?' I remembered the report Max was talking about and how he wanted the names so desperately.

Cam nodded.

'Is that where Amy is?' I asked.

'Her tracker pointed there. So if she's not then...'

'...then it's a trap' I finished for her. We were silent for a moment as I mulled over my thoughts.

As Cam continued to drive, I noticed a sign pointing to a motel a few miles away.

'How about we stop for a break? You look tired'

'I'm fine, we need to keep going'

'Cam. You've been driving for hours already and you obviously haven't slept so I either you let me drive-'

'-never going to happen-'

'-Or you can stop for a break. Even just for an hour'

Cam gritted her teeth. Part of her wanting to trust me, and the other half not so much…

I look around once more, thinking.

'Well, I'm no expert at what normal people class as fun but Georgia, and no offense to Georgia, isn't really well known for their fairgrounds; peanuts & pecans, yes. But not fairgrounds...so...you being a Chameleon and your father being one too, he'd take you somewhere open and highly populated...and the best fairgrounds on the East coast has to have been from Florida somewhere. Correct?' I took Cam's silence as a yes 'And we're not even halfway through Georgia at the moment so you have at least five hours left to drive. Then you want to try and rescue Amy, take on Max and whatever surprises he has in store whilst you're tired' I shook my head 'You're a better spy than that Cammie. You need to rest'

I put my hand on top of Cam's. She didn't flinch away, nor did she try to hold my hand, she just let it rest on hers.

'Plus, I need the bathroom' I added. Cam chuckled lightly. She slipped her hand away from mine to indicate into the next lane, turning off towards the nearby motel.

After parking, Cam and I headed towards the reception area.

There was a woman in her early 20s behind the desk. She had large hoop earrings in and was flicking through a magazine.

The bell over the door chimed as we entered.

She glanced up, looking at us through heavy makeup. Her eyes set on me, looking me up and down in a very obvious manner.

'Hi' She smiled widely, leaning forward slightly to expose more of her chest. 'How can I help you?'

'We're looking for a room' Cam said 'Just for a few hours'

The girl slid her gaze to Cammie, assessing her up and down.

'Sorry' She said briskly 'We don't allow that kind of activity here. It's against company policy'

'That's not what I meant-' Cam began

'Look' I stepped in 'We've been travelling for a while. All we want is to rest for a few hours' I leant against the counter, close enough that I could smell her cheap overpowering perfume. 'Could you make an exception just this once? For me?'

I could feel Cam roll her eyes next to me. The receptionist practically drooled over me.

Within minutes, we had a room key.

Cam didn't say anything as we walked towards the room, it wasn't anything exciting. The walls were a coffee colour, the carpet and the curtains appeared to have come straight out of the 1980s.

We did a quick bug sweep (old habits and all that) before I finally decided to say something.

'It doesn't suit you' I said. Cam raised an eyebrow. 'Jealousy' I clarified 'It doesn't look good on you'

Cam laughed.

'You think I'm jealous of you and that receptionist?' She laughed again 'I'm not jealous of you'

She turned to look through her bag, checking her weapons.

I walked towards her slowly. She kept her back to me which meant that when I was right behind her, I felt her tense a little. Perfect.

Cam kept checking her weapons, trying to ignore me.

I casually ran my fingers down her arm as I reached past her to grab something from her bag.

She stiffened even more. A small smirk pulled at my mouth.

'Are you sure you weren't jealous?' I whispered. As I pulled back, my fingers pulled her hair back over one shoulder, exposing her neck. She tilted her head to the side ever so slightly. Her body finally betrayed her.

Cam spun around, nearly slamming straight into my chest.

I was going to make a snarky remark, say that I could feel the jealousy oozing out of her. But she looked at me with her big eyes and I realised how much of an idiot I was being.

Cam's eyes showed her true feelings all the time. You could say that her eyes could be her biggest weakness, but it's also her most beautiful feature.

She looked angry, scared, hurt, conflicted and yes, she did look jealous but she also looked tired.

I remembered why we came here in the first place.

I took a small step back

'I'm, um, going to head to the bathroom' I said. Cam nodded before turning back to her bag. I shut the bathroom door behind me.

I hoped in the shower, the cold water piercing my body.

I need to stop pushing Cam's buttons right now. She still doesn't trust me and has taken a massive risk in breaking me out. Will she get punished when we get back? Has she left without me?

After my shower, I reemerged into the room to find Cam asleep on top of the covers.

I noticed her phone poking out of the top of her bag. It was a fresh burner phone, hadn't been switched on, but knowing the Gallagher Girls, the moment it was turned on they'd be able to track Cam's location.

I looked at her again. She didn't look peaceful like the last time I'd seen her sleep. She looked troubled and so so tired.

She shouldn't be doing this alone...

Would it be such a bad thing to activate the tacker?

I picked up the phone.

It's just one button…

I hovered over the power button.

She will never forgive you

I put the phone down, not wanting to cause her more pain than I already had.

Cammie POV

'Where are they?' I snapped

'Put down the gun and I will tell you'

'I don't think you're in a position to make demands. Now, let me ask again; where are they?'

'Put down the gun' A voice hissed

'Or what?' I spat back 'Because right now, you have nothing'

'My dear, Cameron' the voice said my name slowly, savouring every syllable. 'I still have everything. I still have you'

I felt something land on my chest, knocking all the air out of me. I began to fight back, kicking and clawing at the darkness, trying to place the voice and stop whoever was there.

'Cammie' A different voice, a familiar voice said.

'No, no, no, no, no' I continued to struggle

'Cammie!' This voice pierced my dream, snapping me back to reality. I opened my eyes to see Zach on top of me, pinning me down. His knees on my legs. His hands on my arms. His breathing was ragged.

'What happened?' I croaked

'You had a nightmare' Zach said, I looked to see him pinning my right arm down and holding onto something in my hand tightly. A gun.

'It's okay' Zach's voice slid into view, she soothed my hair back 'You're okay'

Zach's grip on me loosened. He rolled off allowing me to sit up by myself. The gun slipped back onto the bed.

'How long was I asleep for?' I asked

'Only an hour. You started mumbling and then reached for your gun. I had to wake you up'

'What were you dreaming about?' He asked. I thought back, trying to remember what just happened but found that I couldn't form a full picture.

'There was someone….they were blurry...but I knew them…' The more I tried to focus on the figure, they became blurrier and blurrier until it was just a blob. It was as if my brain was fighting between remembering and forgetting.

It frustrated me. My mind was still playing tricks on me this whole time.

I still have you; that's what the figure said in my dream. They are still messing with my mind and there's nothing I can do about it.

'Hey' Zach cupped my face, turning it to face him. His brows were furrowed, completely worried for me. 'Don't do that'

'Do what?'

'Blame yourself for what's happened. None of this is your fault'

'If it wasn't for me chasing after my family then I would never have been caught and I-'

'-It's not your fault-'

'-I got captured and tortured-'

'-It's not your fault-'

'-I was sloppy! I still am sloppy! I'm taking risks when I shouldn't and-'

My rambling was cut off by Zach pressing his lips to mine. It was a brief moment. Zach pulled back, his expression mirroring mine. Neither of us expected that to happen...but both of us wanted it.

In unison, we pulled ourselves together until our lips were connected and our bodies were flushed against each other.

Zach's hand continued to hold my chin whilst his other trailed down my spine, landing at my waist.

My hands latched around his neck, playing with the hairs at the base of his head in the way that drove him crazy before.

My brain and body went to mush straight away. I could just focus on this moment, with his lips and his body and experiencing just something normal for once.

We continued to kiss. Slowly I felt more of Zach's weight pressed against me as he guided me to lie down on the mattress.

'Wait' I pulled back from Zach, my hands on his chest keeping some sort of distance between us. This was not the time for my spy brain to kick in!

'I need to stay focused and get Amy back' I said. Zach nodded and rolled off of me.

'In that case, we should probably get going' Zach stood up, fixing his t-shirt that I creased and walked towards the bathroom.

I sat on the bed wishing more than anything that I could be a normal girl for one last time.

Zach POV

Cam and I headed back onto the road, she seemed a little better, the window was open a little causing her hair to blow behind her slightly in the wind, and yet she didn't look happy. There was something on her mind that was worrying her.

We parked up about half a mile from the park. The sun was just about setting causing an explosion of blue, orange and pinks to cover the sky.

Cam opened the trunk, opened her bag and loaded her gun.

'Here' She handed me one 'You might need this'

I took it, our hands briefly touching. She stepped back, avoiding my eye.

She put on the rest of her gear, hiding a knife, concealing sleeping patches and other things. I did the same but watched her carefully.

When we were all geared up, Cam closed the trunk, pushing her hair out of her face then finally turned to me.

'Whatever happens, I need you to bring Amy back to Gallagher'

'Gallagher Girl-'

'Please' she begged. Her voice cracking and for a moment, just a moment, her eyes glazed over.

I stared at her as reality hit.

'You're not planning on coming back, are you?' I asked.

'Zach-'

'Because you're the only one who won't stop me. That's what you said' I took a step closer 'What if I did try and stop you? What would you do?'

'You won't stop me' Cam's voice didn't waver. She just stood still, taking it all in

'How can you be so sure of that?' We were practically chest to chest, she could probably feel my anger radiating off of me.

'Spy' She said with a half laugh. I shook my head and took a step back, knowing exactly what she was insinuating by saying spy; if the roles were reversed, I'd expect her to do the same.

'For what it's worth, Gallagher Girl' I said, clicking my gun 'If you don't kill Max, I will'

'Noted' She said 'Come on, lets go'

Cammie POV

We walked through the fairground, it had been closed, abandoned for a few years. The rides had been deemed unsafe, funny that something so poignant in my life is just another thing to class as 'unsafe'

There was dust settling on the rides, weeds beginning to reclaim the ground. It was quiet, but the same sort of quiet every spy experiences on a mission...one where you know you are not alone.

Zach and I scanned the area, looking for any signs of disturbance or blood.

'Here' Zach signalled to a set of tyre tracks and several pairs of footprints leading to a building. We both nodded, ready to move as one.

We checked our surroundings as we entered the dim building. Our torches only illuminate so much of the vast space.

There was a grip, a slow constant, mononymous drip echoing around us. There was also a whimper.

Zach and I both stopped. Listening carefully.

There was the whimper again.

Zach and I moved towards the sound. I looked around the corner to see Amy tied to a chair in the middle of the room.

This was too easy.

I checked my surroundings quickly before heading over to Amy, Zach watching my back. I tucked my gun in my back.

'Amy' I whispered. She looked up, her eyes red and puffy from tears.

'Cammie!' She exclaimed. I signalled for her to remain quiet as I knelt in front of her, untying the ropes.

'Did they hurt you?' I asked.

'No' She shook her head.

'How many are there?' I asked, untying her hands.

'I don't know. They blindfolded me' She whimpered 'I messed up Cammie'

'Hey' I held her hands 'You did nothing wrong. In fact, you did everything right'

I turned over her wrist showing her bracelet. Her eyes lit up.

'The tracker!' She whispered.

I nodded.

'Come on, let's get you out of here' I grabbed her hand. Zach checked our surroundings once more before we headed off towards the exit. I kept Amy close by.

'I don't like this, Gallagher Girl' Zach muttered 'This seems too easy'

As we neared the exit music began to blare out of the speakers. We all froze.

It was music that made every one of my muscles paralyse.

It was the same tune.

'It's lovely, isn't it?' A voice came from somewhere in the dark.

Both Zach and I drew our guns in that direction.

'Amy get behind me' I pulled her back, keeping her protected.

There were footsteps coming forward. Clicking against the floor with the same pace as the water.

Click, click, drip, drip.

A figure emerges from the shadows.

'You' I whispered, my hands began to shake. This was the person who had been plaguing my nightmares, avoiding my recollecting by morphing into a blur only for me to see again at Blackthorne humming the same damn tune.

The first thing I noticed was her eyes and hair. Her hair so fiery you would have thought it was ablaze and those green eyes that could see straight through to your soul.

'Don't you think it's lovely?' She continued to speak 'Us reuniting like this' She stood in front of us so casually, so confidently, so in control. 'It's been a long time coming'

'What the hell do you want?' I snapped again, my hand still shaking, my heart racing.

'You remember this tune, don't you?' She tilted her head 'I used to sing it to you. It would help you sleep. It stopped your nightmares'

I was about to pull the trigger when something she said forced me to stop.

'Isn't that right, Zachary?'

I realised in that moment she hadn't been looking, talking or even acknowledging me.

I looked across at Zach to see his posture rigid, his jaw clenched and his gun steady as he stared straight ahead.

'Hello mother'
