Chapter 42: Another dream became a reality
Five years later
Early September, 2008
Grissom, who just turned 38 last month, slowly wakes up to find that he was in bed alone, but that was to be expected since Sara, who was promoted to supervisor two months ago after Nate finally called it a career, had to go into court for a case, which comes with the territory when being a CSI.
He turns his alarm clock off a few minutes before it went off, gets up, does his morning routine before walking towards the chair that was in the room so he could get his robe, then puts it on as he walks out of the master room, down the hall, passing his children's bedrooms, a bathroom and closet before doing down the stairs, where there was a spacious living room, a medium sized family room with a bathroom, another room for their office, a few closets scattered around, another half bath in the laundry room that lead to their two car-garage that also had another room above it filled with his bug collections, then there was the nice, spacious kitchen with two eating areas, either sitting at the counter or table, and outside, there was a nice big deck that led to the a medium sized yard, where the kids play structure and swing set was at.
Grissom stopped at the counter, poured him a cup of coffee before taking a few steps to his right, stopping in front of the window so he was looking out of it before sighing and thinking back to when another dream of theirs started to become a reality.
Flashback
Mid June, 2005
While their oldest son Billy, who was now 13, was at his friend's house, and their only daughter, 4 year old, Faith, along with their youngest child/second son, 1 year old, Even Gilbert (Honoring Jacob's last name & of course his father), was at daycare, Grissom took his wife of 12 years out for an anniversary lunch just the two of them, knowing family members will be here later tonight.
As their meal was coming to a close, Sara smiled at her husband. "Thank you for bringing me here."
He removed his napkin from his lap and placed it on the table with a smile. "You're welcome, but there is more celebrating later."
Her eyes turned a little darker as she whispered. "I'm looking forward to it."
His heart skipped a beat just before the waiter came with the bill, and while he was getting money out of his wallet, Sara sighed after she took one last sip of non-alcoholic drink, since she was still on duty, before speaking again. "Unfortunately, until then, I have to get back to work."
She honestly loved what she did, but since today was a rare slow day, it was filled with nothing but catching up on paperwork, something she disliked the most about her job, which she knew she wasn't alone in that department.
As he set the money, including tip, down, Grissom cleared his throat and spoke. "Actually, I get to 'keep' you for a little bit longer."
Sara raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
He nodded with a smile. "Yeah, I asked Nate if you could have an extended lunch break."
At first Sara stared to smile, liking the prospect of spending more time with just her husband, then she shook her head and got herself back to reality. "Griss, we promised each other a long time ago that no matter how much we wanted to, we would never spend our work hours like that, even if the day is filled with paperwork, knowing in any moment there could be a case and valuable time shouldn't be wasted, just in case we can save someone's life."
Knowing what she was talking about, Grissom chuckled and shook his head. "I promise you, it's not that. I want to show you something." When she still looked a little suspicious at him, he smiled that loving smile as he held out his hand. "Do you trust me?"
Sara pursed her lips, then smiled, feeling he was being truthful about his intentions for keeping her out of the lab, while placing her hand in his. "With my life."
He leaned forward and kissed her hand before they stood up, then as they were walking towards the exit, their fingers slipped into one another's.
After they got into the vehicle, Grissom drove them through the city, before driving to an area where there was nice, newly built houses until he stopped in front of an empty lot.
Sara looks at her husband with a raised eyebrow. "What are we doing here?"
He just smiled as he got out of the vehicle, then after helping her out and slipped his fingers through hers, walked on the sidewalk before stepping on the grass, then a little ways more, Grissom stopped before saying with a smile. "I think this would be the perfect place for our front door."
Sara was a little shocked, so she looked at him wide-eyed. "Our what?"
"Yes, you heard me right. Our front door to our dream house." While Sara was still speechless, he continued, getting more excited as he spoke. "It's time Sara, it's time for a house, and while the places I looked at were nice and I thought you might like any one of them, it never would have really felt like they were 'us', so I thought why not have it built as we see it in our minds."
Still in a little shock, she turned around and looked at the very good sized empty lot, already seeing a lot of potential, but before she got ahead of herself, she shook her head and looked at her husband. "Can we even afford to do this?"
He sighed, knowing this part was going to be the biggest obstacle to get her on board with this plan. "While we can for most of it, we are going to need a little help."
Sara then spoke with sympathy. "You didn't ask your mom, did you? Because you were pretty stressed out while paying her back the last time she gave us money."
He shook is head. "No, it's not mom."
"Then who else could you, would you, have asked?" There was a pause before Sara shook her head again, this time in disapproval after realizing who the strongest candidate was. "Tyreek?" She then sighed. "You know how I feel about asking him for money.
I don't want him to feel like I'm using him as an ATM machine. He's earned every dollar he's ever gotten from doing what he loves, it's for his future."
Grissom nodded in agreement. "I know, honey, and I am not a 100% comfortable asking for help in this nature either, but I really want to do this for you, for our children, and I am willing to put my pride to the side so I can finally give you, your dream house. And if it makes any difference, I convinced him to agree to a payment plan. I'm going to pay him back every penny that he helps put into this place."
There was a short pause before she spoke again, a determination tone. "We will." When he raised an eyebrow, she explained. "We will pay him back every penny."
Grissom started to smile, excitement coming back into his eyes. "Does that mean you're in? Are we doing this?"
Before Sara could speak, Grissom's phone starts to ring, so he takes it out of his jacket pocket and answers it. "Grissom." He then smiles as he replied. "Yes, she's right here." He removes his phone from his ear and hands it in her direction. "It's your brother."
Knowing which one before she even took his phone, she shook her head with a smirk. "You are so busted, you had this all planned out."
He couldn't deny it, but even he'll admit Tyreek's timing couldn't have been better.
He just chuckled as Sara took the phone before placing it up her ear, and after a heartfelt conversation, they say goodbye, then after wiping a tear off her cheek from his sweet, understanding words, she turned to look at her husband with a sigh of defeat, knowing she couldn't say no to him, to either of them. "Ok, you win, we can build our dream house."
He smiled a second later, causing her to smile, as he walked up to her, they share a peck on the lips and hug, which while in the hug, Sara had a good view of the empty lot, and her mind started to really turn this time.
A few moments later in silence, Grissom smirked as they pulled back. "You're already planning, aren't you?"
She shyly smiled with a guilty look, causing him to chuckle, then he asks sincerely. "So, tell me what you think so far."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, this is your dream home, anyway you want it is how it's going to be."
She cupped his cheek as she spoke softly. "Well, I want your input too, this is our dream home."
"And I'll give it to you when I feel I need too, but as long as you and our children are here, that's the only dream I truly want."
They share another kiss, and after handing his phone back to him, Sara moved around the lot, explaining where she wanted certain rooms to be, which Grissom could have been impressed with how quickly she thought of it, but he really wasn't because he knew she's been thinking about this for years.
At one point during her verbal 'tour', she walked up to him, took his hand, walked them through their 'house' before stopping towards, what would be the kitchen area in her eyes, and released his hand before turning around so she was facing towards, what would be the backyard, then whispered. "Now, please place your arms around me." He did what was requested without hesitation, and she sighed in content while placing her hands on top of his while speaking softly. "Outside of our bedroom, this is going to be one of my favorite places, especially when we are standing like this together."
Curiously, he asked. "Why?"
She continued with emotion. "Because we can look out the window and see our kids playing in their own backyard."
One of the reasons why they wanted a dream home, was for a backyard for their children, especially the younger two because they never had one of their own before, and while the park was good, sometimes, especially after a hard day at work, they wished they could just stay home and let their kids play outside, now they can eventually do that.
He kissed head and sighed in content as he saw her vision, a vision, and many others when it came to the house, he wanted to finally make happen for her.
End of Flashback
Zoned out, Grissom was still standing in that exact spot while taking a sip of his coffee, and as he lowered the mug down, he jumped slightly as a hand landed on his shoulder while his son's voice was heard. "Dad!" He turned his head in shock, and Billy, who was now 16, and an even more spitting image of Grissom than at previous ages, smiled as he spoke. "Sorry. You seemed to be zoned out there, are you ok?"
Grissom cleared his throat and nodded. "Yeah, did you say something?"
"I was just asking who is making breakfast this morning?"
"Uh, I'll do it. What would you like?"
"You sure? Because I can."
Grissom then smirked/teased. "Why don't you let someone else use the kitchen for once?"
As Billy was growing up, cooking had been one of his biggest hobbies. He loved it when his father agreed to teach him a little more each time as he got older, then loved it even more when he was allowed to start doing things on his own, even experimenting, like his dad, a little with certain combinations, which not all went the best, but he was encouraged by his parents to never give up what he wanted to do, and with the way he felt about cooking, it was looking more like each day that it was going to be his true calling in life.
Billy chuckled as he playfully raised his hands up in surrender. "You got it chef, omelet, please."
After Grissom nodded with a smile, he started to walk towards the cupboard where the pots and pans were, while Billy headed for the fridge to get some milk, then only a moment later, they hear 7 year old Faith's voice. "Good morning, is mommy here?"
Billy and Grissom both said good morning in return before Grissom shook his head while he smiled at the little girl who looks like her mother, the gap between the top front teeth and all.
"No your mom had to go into court this morning. What's wrong butterfly, anything I can help you with?"
"Well, I wanted her to check my math problems."
While Faith was in the second grade, her math skills were more advanced then students in her own class/age, so when it's time for them to study math, she goes up to a higher class to learn.
Before Grissom could speak, Billy spoke with a smirk. "Did you forget that she isn't the only math genius around here?"
Even though Billy may look like his father, and his first love is cooking, didn't mean he doesn't have the math skills like his mother, or even science like his father, for that matter.
Faith shook her head with a shy smile. "No, but I didn't want to bother you."
Billy sets the milk down on the counter, walked up to his only sister and picked her up before smiling. "You could never be a bother, so let's look at those math problems, shall we?"
She smiled as she looked at her brother with nothing but love and admiration as he walked them out of the room, but before they were completely out of it, Grissom asked. "What would you like to eat, butterfly?"
"Omelet, please."
Grissom smiled again as he headed for the fridge to get eggs, but before he closed the door, he hears his youngest, 5 year old, son, Evan, who had definitely a mixture of both parents, with his lighter hair like his father's while his eyes were his mother's. "Daddy! Daddy!"
He closed the fridge, and asked with a beaming smile "Yes, son."
Even giggled. "I get to go to school!"
Grissom chuckled before replying. "You've been saying that for weeks since your first day."
Evan nodded, excitedly. "I know, but I love it so much."
"And that makes me happy. Now what would like for breakfast?"
"Ummm...Pancakes?"
"You got it, and I think I'll have some too."
"Ok, I'm going to get dressed, I'll be right back."
Grissom chuckled again as he watched his youngest run out of the room, just another morning in the Grissom household.
After breakfast, and once the dishes were done, Billy offered to take his siblings to school, causing Grissom to smile and nod while saying. "Be safe."
In which Billy nodded with a smile of his own. "Always, especially when they are in the vehicle with me."
"Thank you. I love you." He looked at his other two kids with smiles and emotion. "I love you all, now get to school, learn things."
They chuckled while they ran up to their father to give him a hug before they ran out of the room to get their jacket and backpacks before walking out the door.
Once he was alone, he finished up his cup of coffee and started on the morning's crossword puzzle before going upstairs to finish getting ready for his day, and when he was fully ready, he headed for the garage, got in his vehicle before pulling out.
He stopped for a moment to press the garage button so it would go down and smiled at the house, his thoughts taking him to another time period, a few months ago.
Flashback
Mid June, 2008
After celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary with family at the Stokes residence, which the couple now has three kids, with another one on the way in about six months, Stephanie told them that they'll watch the kids while they celebrate alone for their first night in their new house, that literally took three years to the day that he showed her the empty lot. But in the end they didn't care how long it took, they wanted it to be perfect with no short cuts, so they hired the best in every department they needed, then sat back and watched their house slowly be built the way they, well mostly her, wanted it.
Once Grissom parked in the driveway to their new home, he gets out of the vehicle and rushes to her side before helping her out, then after she was, she closed the door and slipped her fingers through his as they walked up the walkway, stopping at the front door.
He put the keys in the lock and turned to unlock it, then opened the door, but before she could step inside, he stopped her and picked her up bridal style, causing her to gasp in surprise while wrapping her arms around his neck, he then smiled as he stepped inside the house, saying. "Welcome home, Mrs. Grissom."
With love in her eyes, she whispered. "It's great to finally be here, Dr. Grissom."
They kissed softly on the lips a few times before he asks softly. "So, how adventures do you want our first night in here to be?"
She chuckled lightly before replying with nothing but love. "I think for our first night, the most sacred place in this house."
He nodded in agreement/understanding. "You got it, honey."
The kiss softly one more time before he lets her down, then after closing and locking the door, he turned on the alarm before she took his hand and led them upstairs and to their bedroom.
End of Flashback
Stopping at a stop sign, Grissom was zoned out again, only to be alerted when he finally heard a car horn behind him. He shook his head and cleared his throat before he started to drive again towards the lab, where he is now a level 3 CSI. But, he has also been known to do seminars now and help other labs when they need a bug expert.
