I'm sure you're wondering

Is this a new beginning or the start of another end

But if you want to try again

Honey, I'll know, I'll know, I'll know you then

-Marianas Trench "I Knew You When"

Elizabeth had gone to Union City with Lucas.

It shouldn't bother him. Elizabeth, after all, was free to do what she pleased. He had no claim on her. It wasn't even like he had managed to get up the nerve to ask her out himself.

He had thought about it a few times. Had even started to ask her to dinner. However, something always held him back.

Oh, who was he kidding? He knew exactly why he held back.

Elizabeth had already lost one husband to the service. From what he understood, their wedding had occurred shortly before Jack's death. They had just started their new life together and tragedy had put an end to it.

What right did he have to ask her to take that risk again? Would she even want to take that risk again?

Apparently not, seeing that she had gone with Lucas to Union City. And why shouldn't she? Lucas had the means to offer her things that he never could. He had a job which would keep him close to home, even if his past might bring danger their way. Besides, there was no denying the guy had a way with words.

However, Nathan couldn't help but think that Lucas was more interested in the pursuit than in Elizabeth herself.

Perhaps he should just let things be. Perhaps Elizabeth would be better off with Lucas.

Except that no one he had ever met affected him the way that Elizabeth did. She was warm, caring and genuine. He always knew where he stood with her, even if it wasn't in a very favorable spot as she had let him know on more than one occasion. Perhaps that was what he like most about her. She challenged him to face his own faults, and to be a better person. She wasn't afraid to tell him what she thought even if he might not like hearing it.

That was the type of woman that he wanted to share his life with. One that made him examine who he was. One who would stand by him through challenges. Someone to walk by his side, not just let him lead the way. Someone who didn't necessarily need a man in her life to get by but would accept the comfort of a friend to lean on when things got rough.

Elizabeth was all of those things. She had proven that to him time and again.

But would she want to take the risk of loving another Mountie? Should she have to?
