Extreme Rules: 7/6/2009
WWE Extreme Rules was live at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. The show started with a fatal four way match for the WWE United States Championship pitting defending champion, Kofi Kingston against Matt Hardy, William Regal, and Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP). The match was fought at a quick pace that initially had Kingston and MVP work as a unit to eliminate the factor of their opponents. As the match progressed, Regal threw his opponents with exploder suplexes and heavy knee strikes before being countered by Kingston, who rebounded off the ropes, and retaliated against his opponent with Trouble in Paradise to get the pin to retain the title.
The following match was a No Holds Barred match between Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho for the WWE Intercontinental Championship held by Mysterio. Prior to the match, Jericho entered through the crowd, insulting the fans and threatening those who touched him before being immediately assaulted by his opponent. The two fought outside of the ring on the floor of the arena with Mysterio diving over the top rope onto Jericho who was still out of the ring. Jericho gained an advantage by attempting to remove Mysterio's mask, only to fail and have Mysterio throw him out of the ring to dive through the ropes onto his prone opponent. As the action made its way back into the ring, Mysterio attempted another dive only to have Jericho counter it with a Codebreaker. Jericho left the ring to get a folding chair from the corner of the ring. When he attempted to hit Mysterio with it, Mysterio quickly kicked the chair into Jericho's face. After further attacks with the chair, Jericho halted Mysterio's momentum with his signature submission hold, the Walls of Jericho. Mysterio managed to obtain the chair in the ring, and deliver one last hit to Jericho's face to stop the hold before he attempted the 619; Jericho caught him and removed his mask before getting a quick cover to pin his opponent to win the title.
CM Punk and Umaga then fought in the Samoan Strap match, which could only be won by touching all four corners of the ring in succession whilst tethered to each other by the wrist with a leather strap. Punk got an early advantage by quickly touching three corners only to have Umaga use the strap, and pull his opponent towards him and neutralized his attempt before making one of his own to similar results as Punk pulled him over the top rope with him onto the floor. After continued attempts for the win, Punk touched three corners again before being blocked by his opponent, which led to Punk delivering a Go To Sleep, and touching the fourth turnbuckle.
Next was the ECW Championship match. The match had several weapons in use from around the ring, which had Tommy Dreamer and Christian proceed to hit Jack Swagger repeatedly with kendo sticks and trash can lids. The action fell to the outside, which led to Dreamer obtain a trash can lid to put over his shoulders, and dove onto his two opponents with a senton flip. Once the three returned to the ring, Swagger positioned Dreamer onto the top rope, only to have Christian position himself under Swagger, and executed a powerbomb to Swagger as Swagger superplexed Dreamer. Dreamer delivered a DDT to Swagger to get the pinfall victory and the title.
The following match was a Hog Pen match between RAW general manager, Vickie Guerrero, and Santina Marella (Santino Marella, in reality, posing as his fictitious twin sister) for Guerrero's title of Miss WrestleMania. It was later announced Guerrero would have her nephew, Chavo Guerrero, involved in the match on her behalf. Chavo and Marella brawled in a pen full of mud. The match ended after Marella knocked out Chavo, and pinned an incapacitated Vickie to win the title of Miss WrestleMania. As the Guerreros made their way back to their office, Vickie's storyline husband, Edge, was waiting for them; Edge and Vickie had a verbal confrontation, leading to Edge saying he is divorcing Vickie.
The next match was Randy Orton defending the WWE Championship against Batista in a steel cage match. From the start, Orton made numerous attempts to escape the cage, only to be brought back into the ring by the challenger. Batista then attempted his finishing move, the Batista Bomb, only to have Orton escape, and attempted the RKO; once that effort was stopped by his opponent, Orton made another climb over the cage, only to have Batista deliver a Batista Bomb to get the pinfall, winning the WWE title for the first time.
The following match featured John Cena versus The Big Show in a submission match. The match started at a slow pace as both men attempted apply submission holds. Big Show gained an early advantage by grounding his opponent with heavy punches, headbutts, and a full nelson. Cena recovered with some attempts of his own, only to have Big Show stop them, and proceed to apply more submission holds. The momentum shifted after Cena avoided an attempt at Big Show's chokeslam, and delivered an Attitude Adjustment. Cena went to apply the STF, but was unable to apply due to Big Show's size. He then slid his opponent to the ropes to wrap his opponent's leg, so he could apply a sleeper hold. After struggling to escape, The Big Show eventually tapped out, thus ending the match.
Next up was the Triple Threat TLC match for the World Heavyweight Championship.
In the arena, Edge's theme hit to a mixed reaction and out comes the rated-R Superstar. It had been chaotic the past few weeks on SmackDown after Judgement Day, teddy long had announced he had given Bladewolf time off until Extreme Rules as he very much wanted to save his strength for beating the crap out of Edge, so the feud was built up between Edge and Jeff Hardy with Bladewolf being mentioned here and there.
Edge enters the ring and poses as his theme dies down.
Jeff Hardy's theme hits next and out comes the Charismatic Enigma who looks to get revenge on Edge tonight for costing him his match for the World Heavyweight Championship at Judgement Day. Hardy enters the ring and stares Edge down as Edge stand s outside the ring. Hardy looks up at the title above him as his theme dies down.
OOOOWHOOOOOO!
The Devil's Wolf hit to cheers from the fans as the lights dimmed to the sinister blood red and out comes the Bladewolf by himself this time. He walks down the ramp and enters the ring, taking his coat off as he did so and adjusts his elbow pads as he stares straight at Edge who gets into the ring.
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
Right off the bat Edge runs...AND HITS A SPEAR ON BLADEWOLF! Bladewolf groans before Hardy went to the top rope...AND JUMPS OFF WITH A SWANTON BOMB! hardy and Edge teaming together to take out the bigger threat in the match it seems. Bladewolf rolls out the ring, down and out for now as Hardy and Edge turn their attention to each other.
Jeff Hardy takes Edge from corner to corner and puts the boots to him. Hardy drops a leg over Edge. Edge comes back with a knee to the gut and elbow to the back on Hardy. Edge with a quick spear to Hardy in the corner. Hardy with a face front suplex. Hardy with a baseball slide to Edge on the outside. The action spills back inside the ring. Hardy sends Edge over the top rope and Edge falls over a ladder that was setup against the ring! Hardy pulls that ladder in and sets it up under the World Title.
Hardy starts climbing up the ladder when Edge gets in, pulls Hardy down and sends him face first into the ladder. Edge sends Hardy into the side of the ladder pushing it over and crotching Hardy. Edge then grabs another ladder and brings it inside the ring. Edge puts puts the ladder up against the corner and grabs Hardy. Edge then irish whips Hardy into the corner into the ladder.
Edge puts the ladder in a different corner and sends Hardy up against it. Edge backs up, runs, attempts a Spear and Hardy moves causing Edge to crash into the ladder. Hardy with a dropkick into the chest of Edge in the corner. Hardy picks up Edge and tosses him back first into the ladder in the corner.
Hardy attempts a baseball slide into the face, but Edge moves and Hardy crashes into the ladder. The ladder also falls over and hits Hardy in the head. Edge then pulls Hardy out, puts one of his legs inside a ladder and drops the ladder over Hardy's leg. Edge puts Hardy inside the ladder, pulls his legs out and Edge gets a Sharpshooter applied. Hardy starts tapping out, but that will not finish the match due to the stipulation.
The crowd in New Orleans is getting behind Hardy as Edge tosses Hardy out of the ring. Edge sets the ladder back up under the title and starts climbing up. Hardy then climbs up the top rope and dropkicks the ladder over with both Hardy and Edge crashing to the ring.
Hardy then positions a ladder upside down near the ropes. Hardy lifts Edge up and drops him chest first over the middle of the ladder! Hardy then grabs another ladder that is much taller and sets it up near the corner. Edge is down below him.
Hardy gets to the top and Edge starts crawling away to the corner. The ladder falls over and Hardy is only holding on to the cable holding the World Heavyweight Championship. Edge then runs up and pulls Hardy down by his legs.
Hardy falls off the cable and hits the ladder on his jaw on the way down. Hardy is favouring his knee in pain.
Hardy fights back irish whipping Edge into the tall ladder. Hardy starts climbing up that ladder and jumps off...AND CONNECTS WITH WHISPER IN THE WIND!
Hardy leaves the ring and grabs another ladder setting it up under the title. Hardy then runs at Edge and clotheslines himself over the top rope along with Edge.
Edge with a big boot that levels Hardy on the outside. Edge then grabs a ladder and sets it up sitting over the ring apron and ring barricade. Edge grabs Hardy, attempts a suplex, but Hardy counters out. Hardy grabs a ladder and throws it at Edge.
Edge then sends Hardy with force into the steel steps sending them over. Edge picks up the top part of the steel steps and walks towards Hardy, but Hardy hits him and Edge drops the steel steps.
Hardy jumps off the steel steps and drops Edge's jaw off the ring barricade. Hardy then puts Edge on top of the ladder sitting across the ring apron and ring barricade. Hardy sets a ladder up next to Edge, climbs up top, but Edge rolls off his ladder and climbs up the other side of the ladder that Hardy is on.
Both are at the top and the ladder tips over sending both crashing into the ladder over the ring apron and ring barricade! Both Edge and Hardy are down as we take another look at the impact of the two going through the ladder.
Bladewolf, having been out for most of the match thus far, slides into the ring and grabs Edge hitting a German Suplex, then grabs Hardy and gives him a German Suplex. Bladewolf grabs a table and sets it up before he grabs both Hardy and Edge by the throats, lifts them up...AND CHOKESLAMS THEM THROUGH THE TABLE! Bladewolf breaths heavily as he glares down at the two before he sets up the ladder and starts climbing it, beginning to reach for the title-
BOOM! Kane's theme played and out comes the Big Red Monster, Bladewolf's brother. Bladewolf stared at his brother who marches towards the ring and slides in, looking up at him...BEFORE HE KICKS THE LADDER OVER! Bladeowlf lands harshly on the mat before Kane walks over, grabs his brother by the throat then lifts him up...AND PLANTS HIM WITH A CHOKESLAM! Kane then scoops Bladewolf up...AND HITS A TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER!
Kane leaves the ring and heads to the back as Bladewolf is laid out.
Edge and Hardy exchange right hands and kicks. Hardy kicks Edge who gets sent into the referee. Hardy climbs up the ladder under the title. Edge climbs the ladder near that one. Hardy reaches up, turns, Edge jumps off his ladder and Hardy counters a Spear attempt...INTO A TWIST OF FATE OFF THE LADDERS!
Hardy is up first and starts climbing again. Edge starts climbing up the other side. Hardy has his hands on the title when Edge hits him with a right that sends Hardy down. Edge now has his hands on the title. Hardy starts pulling the leg of Edge. Hardy pulls Edge's legs through the ladder and Edge is caught in the ladder. Hardy climbs up the ladder and pulls the World Heavyweight Championship down! HARDY WINS!
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
After the match, we see highlights of the match leading to the finish. Back live, Hardy is celebrating his title win as Jim Ross gets in to speak with him. CM Punk's music hits and he is cashing in the "Money in the Bank" briefcase right now!
The bell rings and here we go. Punk gets Hardy up and hits the GTS on Hardy! Punk covers Hardy…1…2…Hardy kicks out and Punk can't believe it. Punk picks up Hardy again and Hardy gets an inside cradle on Punk for a close two count. Punk kicks Hardy in the head and hits another GTS! Punk hooks the leg…1…2…3! PUNK IS THE NEW CHAMPION!
After the match, Punk is handed the World Heavyweight Championship and celebrates in the ring. Jim Ross and Todd Grisham talk about how Punk spoiled Jeff Hardy's party tonight. We then see highlights of the Ladder match and Punk walking out to cash in his "Money in the Bank" briefcase. Back live, Punk is up on the corner holding up the World Heavyweight Championship as the PPV goes off the air...
