Outside a diner.
"Bobby" She had a smile on her face. She really missed him.
"What you doing here?" He returned her smile not by habit but genuinely because he missed her and because she tracked him here. She wanted to see me.
"I left you two messages. You never called me back."
"Yeah, I've been busy."
He's shutting me out. She was purgatory but why did it feel like hell?
"Doing what?" She was not letting him off the hook that easy. He has been awfully elusive these days.
"Sorting things out." Is he sorting out whether he still wanted a relationship with me? Things have been awfully tense but he had to understand that the circumstances were temporary. Everything would sort itself out in time.
"So.." he started bouncing on the balls of his feet. "How you doing?" He really wanted to know. It killed him to be apart from her. If it were up to him, he would bring her into his arms and kiss her. He'd tell her it was all his fault and he was sorry for being distant. Yes, it was a bit dramatic but love made people act a little less than rational. He needed to reign in how he was feeling, here just a couple feet away from her. He knew he couldn't talk to her, not here and not now. Worse, they made it a condition of his return that he not tell her about his undercover operation. That was probably to spite me, Goren thought. He knew he had to cut it short before he would push aside rational thought and give into his need to touch her.
"Well I caught those tourists that were killed out in Redhook."
The Captain put her on the case? Was that to punish me more because I couldn't tell her? Or maybe, yes she had to be insurance, if it didn't turn out right. Maybe, his way of protecting me? Was the Captain, actually on my side? Either way, this was a risky meet. I have to shake her. Who knows who's lurking around?
"I gotta run. I'll give you a call, okay?" He hated to leave her like this. He rubbed his face. This undercover stint was making him paranoid. He didn't know who was watching, Stoat, Testarossa, Moran. There could be ears everywhere and the stakes were high. One wrong step could have disastrous consequences. He had to be smart and talking to Eames out in the open right now was not smart. Apparently, he also needed to be less predictable. He couldn't put them in danger nor could he risk people at 1PP finding out he was talking to her or worse yet that they were in a relationship. When did everything get so complicated?Goren turned on his heels and put some distance between them. He was trying to hard to keep his end of the deal yet it seemed that odds were stacked against him.
She watched him leave, feeling a pain in her stomach. They were supposed to talk about getting back together but then he didn't show up or answer his phone. Maybe he changed his mind. Bobby could be stubborn like that, sometimes. She needed to get through to him, let him know that she was there for him and on his side. She felt like a stalker but he didn't leave her with much choice. She needed to see him, know that he was okay, and read his body language for any clues to what might be going on or how he was feeling.
Theirs were an emotional entanglement knotted and miles long and sometimes fused. They were so much a part of each other that sometimes they shared a mind, thought process and instincts. They knew how the other would react and where they would go which is how she tracked Goren to the diner. It was a habit. One that he couldn't not resist and this diner brought him comfort. He would order the special and people watch. Being able to guess or predict what they did and where they may be headed filled him with enormous satisfaction and eating a cooked meal by familiar faces made him feel less alone.
She didn't understand why he was brushing her off now. It felt almost unlike him. Something about him was off. Normally when he asked about her, he was very much engaged but she detected that he was distracted and almost curt. He seemed tense. Surely, that can't be just because of us. What was going on? He felt miles away which, initially, made her think that maybe he was reconsidering the relationship. Maybe it was to difficult to be both romantic and professionally involved. Clearly, there were rules in place to avoid this very situation.
Then, she thought Ross. He was being awfully cagey and seemed to know information, her and Daniels weren't privy to. In cases like these, she would often talk it over with Goren but he was also acting weird. Something was up with the both of them. She was sure of it. She felt so out of the loop and she did not like that at all.
