I DREAM OF RAINBOWS
Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.
The awesome and talented dowlingnana searched out my errors and corrected them.
Edward waited until later in the day to try to place his call once more to his parents and then had the surprise of his life when no one answered to accept his call.
CHAPTER 46: WHAT THE HELL DID YOU SAY?
Even though the starting of the evening was a bit tense, even after Charlie had finished with his full explanation, both Charlie and Bella managed to begin to relax with one another as the time wore on. Bella felt that she needed time to consider all that her father had told her that day, but it didn't mean that she had to continue to act like a spoilt bitch around him. She knew that once they retired for the night that she would continue to be awake into the early hours of the morning thinking about all had he told her.
She loved her dad and knew in her heart of hearts that he was only doing his duty and acting as he always had as her father in his efforts to protect her and keep her safe. It was just as much her fault also in creating this mess since she hadn't taken the time to consider what her dad was likely to do with all that she had told him about her encounters with Edward Cullen and his treatment of her.
Chief Charles Swan was an honorable police officer and one terrific father. He took both of his duties, as an officer and as a father, very serious. There were no half measures with how he approached either job. It was full steam ahead when he felt that he was right with his decision about the action he was going to take or do.
Charlie slept well that night content in knowing that his complete honesty with his daughter was helping to mend their strained relationship. Or at least that was his hope and instinct was telling him that his hope was on the way to becoming reality.
Bella on the other hand had a lot to think about. She was honest enough with herself to admit that after listening to what Charlie had told her she was no longer as angry with him. But she had to be honest enough in her thoughts to realize that she was leery about what the future held when it comes to her working relationship with any of the Cullen's.

Everyone at the Cullen household had decided to go out to dinner in the hopes of leaving, at least for a while, all of the stress and worry behind where the case of Edward Cullen was concerned. It was felt that a change of pace or place might help ease the mind for a bit.
So, Carlisle and Esme, Emmett and Rosalie, Jasper and Alice, all left before Edward had made his second attempt in trying to talk with his mom or dad. And they didn't return until much later in the evening. Long after Edward was able to try to call for a third time.

Edward's frustration was building to unreasonable heights since he wasn't getting his way. He had desperately wanted to share the information he had obtained from Mr. Winston with his parents, but since his mother had hung up on him, he hadn't been able to get an answer from either one of his parents.
Then it was time for lockdown to the individual cells which meant he could no longer try to call any more that night. This only served to compound his frustration to the point that he nearly got himself taken to solidary confinement for refusing to cooperate with the guard to go to his cell for the night.
But Edward got control of himself before things got seriously out of hand and he ended up being the one to suffer for his actions.
Edward sat in his cell all night thinking about the mess he was in and what actions had brought him to this point. Where some impulsive actions had contributed to his situation, he was willing to admit to, however, he wasn't willing to accept that his other planning, actions and attitude had anything to do with his present predicament.
It was difficult to deal with the fact that he was having to wait until morning before he could try calling his parents once more. He just hoped that he could get an answer at that time so his parents could have an attorney ready to help him once he reached Seattle.

As the evening was ending both Emmett and Jasper wanted to take their lady home, but that wasn't acceptable since Rosalie and Alice had come in Rosalie's car. Everyone admitted during some point of the evening that it had definitely been relaxing to be able to forget for a while about the whole problem named Edward Cullen.
Rosalie dropped Alice off at her home and then headed onward to her house. It didn't take long before each woman fell into bed with some relief, but at the same time, their mind was wondering about what was going to happen next. It had been hard enough letting Carlisle and Esme know about what Edward had done to Bella that had put her into the hospital. Each woman had a feeling that the next chapter of this mess was just lurking around the corner waiting to make its presence known.

The next morning Charlie had gotten up before Bella and made his way to the kitchen to begin making breakfast for the both of them. He had a couple of phone calls that he needed to make before heading home to Forks since either call resulted in him having to make an appearance at one or two offices. He did also want to spend a bit more time with Bella. It was very important to him to make sure that their relationship of parent and child was definitely on the mend.
Charlie needed to get in touch with Mike and then give a call to the District Attorney's office. He wanted to make sure it was known that he wouldn't be testifying to any thing that Edward had told him in confidence. Charlie was going to classify that information as coming from an informant and therefore was privileged. Charlie was determined that he wasn't going to create any further problems for that young man or for the working relationship that was being established between the Cullen company and Bella.
As Charlie was finishing up breakfast Bella slowly came into the kitchen and headed straight for the coffee pot to pour her first cup of the day. She gave a quick smile to her dad as she headed for the kitchen table.
"Do you need some time before eating or shall I go ahead and dish it up for us?" Charlie asked Bella while barely concealing a smile that was threatening to appear. He had watched Bella waking up over the years as she grew up and get ready to start her day and it was always the same; she was slow waking up. However, as time passed it seemed that it took a little longer as time moved on.
All Bella did at her father's question was to shake her head no. She raised her cup up slightly to indicate that she wanted time to finish her coffee. Charlie chuckled and turned back to finish up with the cooking of breakfast.

Today Carlisle was determined to go down to talk with Edward. He had many questions that only Edward could answer, and it was answers that he needed to try to understand why all of this was happening.
Carlisle didn't blame Bella's dad for the actions he had taken since he probably would have done the same thing under the same set of circumstances if he had a daughter. He knew that he would do anything he could to keep her safe, and in his opinion, that's all that Isabella Swan's father was trying to do.
Edward was the guilty party in all of this mess. If he hadn't been acting like an ass that felt that women were less deserving then he wouldn't be sitting where he was at the present time.
If Carlisle did what he was inclined to do, then he and Esme would leave Edward to get himself out of this situation in hope that his son would learn his lesson. But it wasn't in Carlisle or Esme to do that to one of their children. They were going to do everything they could to help Edward and then see about trying to knock some sense into his damn thick head afterward.
So, he got ready to leave the house and make his way down to the jail. However, as Carlisle was heading out the door he was halted by a solid figure standing in the doorway that he had to pass around because he sure as hell wasn't going to be able to go through.
Esme looked at her husband and then said, "You didn't think that you were going to go talk to him without me did you." Then she laughed at the look of surprise that appeared upon her husband's face.
"What are you talking about, love?" Carlisle tried to pull the innocent act on his wife. However, it didn't work.
"I know you too well, Carlisle. You're pissed off at Edward the same as I am but we're not going to leave our dear boy defenseless to handle this whole damn mess by himself, even though he created it with his sexist attitude.
"But like you, I want some answers and then we can decide what our next course of action should be. So, let's go see him together and hear what he has to say." And with that said Esme turned towards the door and waited until Carlisle opened it for her.

Breakfast finished, Bella returned to work on her book a bit longer while Charlie made the phone calls that he had mentioned to her earlier. She wasn't paying any attention to the mummering that had been taking place in her living room until she heard, "Why the Sam hell didn't you tell me that when I last talked with you?!" Charlie was yelling at someone.
She walked out of her home-office to see what was going on and if there was anything she could do.
"Dad,…..?" Was all that Bella was able to say because Charlie quickly interrupted her by saying, "I've got to go. Shit is about to hit the fan and I need to see what I can do to stall it. I'll be back a little later." And with that he grabbed up his jacket and left the house without another word.
Next thing heard was the start of a car engine and the sound of a vehicle being backed out of the driveway, then it roared off down the street.

Carlisle and Esme arrived at the jail downtown in L. A. and was having a hard time finding a parking space. Once they were parked a block away, the couple walked the block to reach their destination and went in the main entrance of the LAPD. Once inside they were a bit confused as to where they should go to request seeing their son.
Seeing an officer coming toward them as he was heading to exit the building, Carlisle halted him to ask where they would go to be able to see their son who was a current inmate. The officer politely took them to the intake office which would handle such things and then wished them a good day.
Carlisle explained to the officer behind the counter the reason why they were there and mentioned who they wanted to see. That was when he and Esme were hit smack in the face with the surprise of a lifetime.
A/N: Okay, it seems that Charlie and Bella are on the way to mending their father/daughter relationship. Then Charlie starts making his calls only to be hit with a surprise that made him extremely unhappy. Any idea what it might be? Then Carlisle and Esme decide to visit with Edward to get some answers only to receive a surprise. Any idea what that might be? Could the surprise that everyone encountered be the same surprise, but from different directions?
Thanks for reading and looking forward to hearing from you.
