-Chapter Forty-Seven: Johnny and Dora
It has been a month. Rosa had held a strong, brave face in public, and was crying less when she was alone. She tried to avoid Jake where possible. She was never rude or harsh to him. She just struggled to be around him for too long.
The first few days, she had really struggled to sleep. She was not used to sleeping in a bed by herself, and as much as she tried not to, she usually ended up crying herself to sleep. However now, a month down the road, sleep came easier, and the tears were fewer. She hoped that soon, she could start to feel happy for them.
Rosa still took part in all their shenanigans. When the Vending machine was replaced, she saluted with Jake. Then she grabbed free candy gleefully with the rest. One benefit of her and Jake hiding their relationship for so long, meant that she had perfected acting as though they were 'friends' at work. Which came in useful now, that she was deeply in love with him, and had to fight off jealousy and tears all day.
Rosa watched, confused as Amy and Jake flirted in the briefing. Then she watched Amy follow Jake into the briefing room. She couldn't fathom to watch her, and instead walked off to the kitchen.
Rosa had forgotten that it was her birthday, and tried to ignore it.
She was annoyed that she had to drive Jake and Amy. Jake was oddly trying not to flirt with Amy, which Rosa didn't really understand. But they walked into the restaurant together.
She suffered for three hours with Charles waiting in the car, and was getting quite irritable as she was stuck with Charles, not knowing how Jake and Rosa were doing. Jealousy and sadness ripped through her, as she only grew angrier, and took it out on Charles.
Jake on the other hand was lost within his mind. Despite Amy saying she didn't want to date him, he couldn't deny that he felt something in that kiss. A spark. Something, which he was sure Amy felt too. It reminded him a bit of the first time he ever kissed Rosa, with her, fireworks shot through his body, With Amy, sparks. He didn't know why, but he felt a little guilty and had the strong urge to tell Rosa.
Jake and Amy returned to the van and they remained in silence until Charles asked how the restaurant was
"Such a normal time" Amy yelled
"Why are you being weird?" Charles asked
"Amy and I kissed" Jake said, looking at Rosa as he said it
"WHAT!" Charles shouted in excitement
"To keep our cover from being blown; we didn't have a choice" Amy said
"Tell me EVERYTHING" Charles gushed
"Charles, it was just a kiss. Ok? It was for work, it was nothing" Jake said, still not being able to look away from Rosa.
"Yeah. Who cares about a kiss? Call me if you grab each other's asses" She said coldly. Jake knew that she was pissed. "He's pulling over. It's going down" She added, bringing their conversation back to the matter at hand.
"You guys are so naive. It's never nothing" He explained, telling a story about the time he played in Annie
"Guys, guys. It's not a handoff. He's leaving the package" Rosa said focusing on work and only work.
"Ok. You and Rosa follow Augustine" Jake ordered Charles
"Right. And you and Amy follow your hearts" Charles said
"No! We're going to stay with the package" Jake confirmed
"And each other. Forever" Charles added
"Come on, man" Jake said
Rosa once more was stuck with Charles. She realised that she had to go to the party with Marcus. Once Boyle left, she turned to Marcus.
"Ok. What's all this? Really?" She asked
"Well. Charles phoned me a few weeks ago, asking if I had any plans for your birthday, I said no because... Well this is the longest lie I have ever had, and he told me I had to arrange it for you, so here I am" He said
"Jake and I are over" she said
"I figured" He said
"How?" She asked
"Before you were both planning ways for me to make my existence known. It had been quiet for a while. Besides, Jake text me" He said
"Oh" Rosa replied "Then, why did you go through all this?" She asked
"Jake asked me to" He said
"What?" Rosa asked
"He asked me months ago, when this first started. His initial plan was for me to leave, and for you and him to have the night. He asked me again when he told me about you two, about the change in plans, and that he thought it would be nice if we had an evening. As friends" Marcus said
"Alright" She said sadly
"Come on. Cheer up. We can plan our break up" He said She laughed at that
-The Next Day-
Rosa arrived at the precinct and watched as Wunch walked into Holt's office.
"Squad. Can I have your attention please? I am being transferred to the public relations office. I'm leaving the Nine-Nine effective immediately" Holt said
"What the Hell?" Amy asked
"I don't understand" Jake said
"What the Hell?" Amy repeated
"Why are you doing this?" Charles asked
"What the Hell?" Amy asked
"I want to say, it has been a pleasure to have worked alongside all of you for the past 21 and a half months. I'm sorry for getting so emotional" Holt said
"Pretty consistent tone, actually" Jake said
"These have been the" Holt started before turning his voice into one that expressed emotions "These have been the best years of my career."
"Oh no. This is new" Jake said referencing the change in tone
"And I know that every one of you, gave me everything you had. And I will never forget it" He said
"Go back to being robot captain" Jake begged
Holt laughed and made robot noises.
"Dismissed" He said as he walked through the precinct, as Gina made the announcement she was leaving too.
Once Holt left, Amy ran off to the evidence room.
"What..." Jake said to Rosa and Charles, but couldn't find any words. Luckily, Rosa could
"Go to her, Jake" She said. Jake looked her in the eye. Rosa nodded to him as she sighed. She knew this was for the best. Jake walked off, and found her
"Hey" He greeted
"Hey" She replied
"Thought I might find you in here" He said
"I just needed to process the captain's news. I feel so bad for him" She said
"So, how are you holding up?" He asked
"I don't know. I'm still in shock. You?" She answered
"Um. Basically, handling it the way I dealt with my dad leaving, just. Repressing the hell out of it" Jake said
"So, a lot of change around here, huh?" Amy asked. Jake didn't reply, he just leant in and kissed her. This wasn't a cover kiss. This was a real kiss, and she kissed back. There were the fireworks. They were distracted by Charles calling him
"Hey, Jake. The new Captain's here" He called.
They positioned themselves and awaited the entrance of their new Captain.
