XLVII

I park down the block from him and walk carefully to his house.

The street is in darkness, even the streetlights are off at this time of night, bathing everything in thick shadow.

My footsteps are lost in rushes of wind; the whispers of leaves and creak of branches.

Nothing on the street moves except me.

I've never done something so stupid.

He won't even be awake.

I just can't bear this feeling anymore, my stomach twisting and turning, my heart pounding out a beat I don't understand, uneven and ragged, discordant where it echoes in my ears.

The balcony stairs to his room are slippery and covered in rotting leaves.

I tread carefully, I will tread carefully.

The rap of my fist against the door is too loud, the glass sharp and cold against my knuckles, leaving a slight sting.

It's three in the morning.

He won't be awake.

It opens anyway.
