Winter Break Part 8

Looking out the window of her mother's car, Natsumi watched the passing scenery as the two dark haired females arrived on the campus of Konoha University.
"Are you sure she said she would meet you out here?" Natsumi's mother asked as she pulled up to the sidewalk and put the car into park.
Natsumi adjusted her navy blue scarf on her neck before turning to her mother and nodding.
"Konan's probably just running a little late. I texted her to let her know we were on the way." Natsumi replied.
"And you girls agreed that she would meet you to walk you to her dorm?" her mother asked again earning a nod from the girl. "Do you want me to wait until she gets here so you can stay in the car? I'd hate for you to get cold" her mother offered.
"That's ok you don't have to wait mom" Natsumi said.
"Are you sure you'll be warm enough in what you're wearing?" her mother asked in a concerned tone.
Natsumi looked down at her outfit. Along with her navy blue scarf, she wore a black puffy jacket over top a grey sweatshirt and a pair of black skinny jeans with black high tops.
"I think I'll be fine" Natsumi stated earning a weary look from her mother before she gave a reluctant nod.
"Alright dear" her mother said before Natsumi started to open her door to exit the car. "Are you going to text me when you need to be picked up?" the woman asked earning a nod from the teen as she stepped out.
"See you later mom" Natsumi said with a small wave before shutting the door as her mother drove off.
Turning to the campus, Natsumi stuck her hands into the pockets of her coat just as a cold gust of wind blew by, making her shudder.
'Konan said she would meet me here' Natsumi thought, looking around the seemingly empty campus and seeing no sign of the blue haired girl.
Natsumi sighed before deciding to pull out her phone and call the girl. Unfortunately there was no answer so she texted the girl to let her know that she was out front. After about five minutes and having received no reply, Natsumi debated on trying to find Konan's dorm on her own.
"You know standing around in the cold could get you sick" a familiar male voice then called gaining the girl's attention from her phone.
Turning to the source she saw Sasori walking over with his hands in the pockets of his long black coat that was opened to reveal his cocktail uniform underneath.
"Sasori" Natsumi acknowledged the boy. "Did you just get off of work?" she asked tilting her head in curiosity.
"What gave it away?" the redhead asked in a sarcastic tone as he tiredly ran a hand through his red locks.
Natsumi shook her head as a small smile crossed her lips while she stuffed her phone into pocket.
"You know, you could have given me a heads up that I'd see you at the Hyuga Christmas Party" Natsumi said crossing her arms over her chest making the boy quirk a brow.
"And what would be the reason for that?" Sasori asked.
"Well I wouldn't have been so surprised seeing you" Natsumi replied.
"It's not like we could really socialize. You were a guest and I was an employee." Sasori pointed out making the girl scoff. "It's wouldn't have been proper for us to start a conversation" he explained. "And I wasn't getting reprimanded for something so juvenile" Sasori stated earning an eye roll from Natsumi before the girl sighed and simply nodded in understanding. "But what are you doing here now?" Sasori asked straight forwardly.
"Interviewing Konan" Natsumi replied.
"Really?" Sasori asked cocking a brow at the teen in interest. "Where is she?" he questioned.
Natsumi wore a nervous smile as she ran a hand through her hair.
"I'm not too sure" Natsumi admitted. "She was supposed to meet me out front but she hasn't answered her phone or texted back yet" Natsumi explained making Sasori scoff before shaking his head in dismay.
"Knowing her, she probably got sidetracked and has her phone on silent" Sasori stated.
Natsumi hung her head as she released a heavy sigh.
"I suppose I can take you to her dorm" Sasori stated making the teen perk up.
"Really?" Natsumi asked looking back to the boy and seeing him already turning to leave.
"It's not like it's out of my way" Sasori replied as he gave a shrug and continued on.
"Hn thank you Sasori" Natsumi said as she rushed to catch up with the redhead to walk alongside him but in doing so stepping on a small patch of ice and causing her to slip.
Natsumi felt as though the wind had been knocked out of her as she stared up towards the semi cloudy sky. And after a moment feeling the embarrassment of the situation set in when Sasori leaned over her with a raised brow.
"I'm ok" Natsumi immediately stated as she sat up and looked around to make sure no one else had seen her slip up.
"Mmhm" Sasori hummed in reply before offering a hand to the dark haired girl.
Natsumi quickly took it, allowing him to pull her to her feet before she dusted herself off and the pair resumed walking.
"You don't think anyone saw that right?" Natsumi asked nervously.
"Most of the students left campus for the holidays" Sasori replied simply.
"You didn't" Natsumi pointed out.
Sasori gave the girl a pointed look.
"Most students don't have the same circumstances as me" the redhead stated looking ahead again.
"Hn" Natsumi replied with a nod of understanding. "Working during the holidays must've been hard, but at least you weren't alone on campus since I'm pretty sure most of the Akatsuki stayed on campus" Natsumi said making Sasori scoff.
"I think I would've preferred being alone" Sasori admitted making the girl cock a brow at him.
"Not enjoying coming home to Deidara after a long day of work?" Natsumi joked making Sasori stiffen before giving Natsumi a deadpan stare.
A small giggle escaped the teenage girl before the pair continued on.

Meanwhile Itachi pulled his car into the parking lot as Izumi released heavy sigh.
"Itachi we're going to miss the previews" the brunette complained as she folded her arms across her chest.
She wore a purple puffy vest on top of a white long sleeved shirt with a pair of dark blue jeans and a pair of black boots.
"I apologize Izumi" Itachi said in a sincere tone. "But I really need to pick up this flash drive from Kisame" Itachi went on earning another huff from his brown haired friend.
"Sure thing Itachi" Izumi said dejectedly. "But if we end up missing all the previews then you're paying for all the snacks" she said earning a light chuckle from the Uchiha before he nodded in agreement.
"I'll be right back, he said he would be leaving the library now" Itachi said earning a nod from the girl before exiting the vehicle.
As the Uchiha stepped out into the cold, he gave a slight pause before shutting the car door and allowing his onyx hues to travel over the surrounding campus. For the most part it was empty as most of the students of Konoha University went home for winter break and the cold of winter kept the few that remained on campus indoors. He was looking toward the direction of the library, trying to catch sight of his tall dark haired when another familiar head of black hair caught his attention.
'Natsumi?' Itachi thought looking after the girl and upon seeing the girl walking alongside an all too recognizable red head. 'And she's with Sasori?' Itachi noted looking after the pair and seeing them heading in the direction of the dorms.
The Uchiha couldn't deny the slight pit of worry he felt as he looked after them and his curiosity kept him distracted long enough that he didn't notice when Kisame finally emerged from the library and began waving him over as he walked towards Itachi.
"Yo Itachi" Kisame greeted the Uchiha as he walked up with his hands buried in the pockets of his black coat that he wore with a pair of dark blue jeans and black high tops.
Itachi didn't react at first, instead keeping his gaze on Natsumi until Kisame followed his line of sight and released a chuckle.
"Is that Narumi?" Kisame asked knowingly striking a nerve with Itachi as the Uchiha turned to him with an annoyed look. "Wow what's your brother's girlfriend doing here with Sasori?" Kisame asked egging the Uchiha on even more with one of his usual shark like smirks.
"Natsumi isn't Sasuke's girlfriend" Itachi corrected Kisame, emphasizing on her name, making the boy snort to reframe from laughing.
"Uh huh then why react this way Itachi?" Kisame asked raising a brow at Itachi and making the Uchiha scoff as he looked to the side.
"I know what you're trying to insinuate Kisame and I'm not getting into this with you now" Itachi stated making the other boy's smile widen.
"What? I just think it's a little weird you'd still want to act so protectively of her when you know she's not with your little brother" Kisame pointed out earning an annoyed look from Itachi. "Unless you're interested in her" Kisame went on as Itachi turned to his head back to see Natsumi disappear from view with Sasori.
"What is she doing here with Sasori anyways? I thought they already did his interview" Itachi said ignoring Kisame's previous statement much to the annoyance of the dark haired boy.
"Why does it matter?" Kisame asked in a bored tone.
"I don't see a reason for her to be spending more time with Sasori" Itachi stated.
Kisame gave the Uchiha a confused look.
"Since when did you become the leading authority on who she can spend time with?" Kisame asked gaining the Uchiha's attention as he turned to him with his brows raised in surprise.
"I'm not trying to police who she spends her time with" Itachi defended himself.
"Oh yeah then why does it matter if it's Sasori?" Kisame asked as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Maybe the kid has a crush on him or something" Kisame offered making Itachi stiffen.
It was quiet for a moment before Itachi spoke.
"She'll get hurt" Itachi stated.
"What are you talking about Itachi?" Kisame questioned. "We both know Sasori wouldn't cross any line with Natsumi especially since she's still a kid" he pointed out.
"That's not the point" Itachi replied making a confused look cross Kisame's face. "We know the type of person Sasori is. Even if Natsumi was 18, he wouldn't take the slightest interest in her because how invested he is in his art. That's why he doesn't have a girlfriend now or even date." Itachi explained. "He hates distractions so he'll turn her down and she'll have to deal with that rejection" Itachi stated.
"Then that's just something the kid is going to have to deal with when it happens" Kisame said with a shrug. "You can't protect her from everything and regardless of who it is, she'll have to deal with rejection at some point in her life" Kisame elaborated.
Itachi released a heavy sigh.
"Why does it matter to you anyways?" Kisame asked again.
Itachi shook his head.
"I care" Itachi stated.
"You care?" Kisame asked wanting Itachi to elaborate further but before the Uchiha could retort, he was interrupted by the loud horn that came from his vehicle.
Both boys turned to the car to see Izumi now having rolled down the passenger window pointing to her wrist to signal the time before motioning for Itachi to hurry up. Kisame scoffed as he watched Itachi give the girl a nod of understanding.
"I'm not having this conversation right now" Itachi breathed out. "Do you have the flash drive?" Itachi asked changing the topic to the purpose of their meeting.
Kisame pulled the small black and red device from his pocket, holding it out to the Uchiha but before Itachi could take it, pulling it back slightly.
"My advice for your overall situation is to worry more your ex ordering you around before trying to worry about the kid especially since she seems happy doing whatever she is with Sasori" Kisame said making Itachi stiffen.
Itachi rolled his eyes at Kisame before taking the flash drive.
"I didn't ask for your advice Kisame but if you want to make yourself useful why don't you find out what Natsumi is doing with Sasori" Itachi stated earning a scoff from Kisame as the tall boy smirked at Itachi.
"Fine Itachi" Kisame said. "But don't expect me to tell you what I find out" Kisame stated, making the Uchiha narrow his eyes at him before turning to leave.
Kisame chuckled watching as Itachi made his way to his car and waving him off with a smug smile further to the Uchiha's annoyance before turning towards the dorms with a curious look in his eyes.
"But what is the kid doing here?" Kisame questioned out loud before starting toward the building.
...
"And here's Konan's dorm" Sasori announced as he and Natsumi came to a halt outside a door that had loud music playing behind it.
Sasori knocked on the door before calling out for the blue haired girl.
"Konan!" Sasori called. "It's Sasori" he stated followed by the sounds of shuffling from behind the door.
He gave an annoyed huff before knocking again.
"Konan I brought Natsumi!" Sasori called again in slightly louder voice.
"Come in!" a feminine voice that Natsumi recognized as Konan's called back shortly after.
Sasori gave another huff before reaching out and opening the door to reveal the blue haired beauty standing in the middle of the room surrounded by clothes and papers that littered the floor around her. The usually cool and collected girl seemed flustered as she frantically looked around the room. Rather than the usual stylish outfits she usually wore, Konan was more dressed down today, wearing a faded black oversized sweat shirt that had Konoha University in cracking black letters across the front along with a pair of black pajama shorts with black thigh socks. Instead of her signature blue eye shadow, she had a bare face, revealing blemish free skin and her short hair was wrapped in a towel on top of her head.
'Looks like she was still getting ready' Natsumi noted before looking around the small room.
The room had white walls. Half of the room seemed a little less disheveled than the other, seeing as Konan's half was covered in clothes. One bed had black sheets and a large grey comforter with about four black and grey pillows decorating the top with a few band posters on the wall closest to the bed while across the room there was another bed with a set of white sheets and a purple comforter with an array of purple and white decorative pillows covering a majority of the bed with the walls on that side being left more bare aside from a calendar It was simple enough to figure which side was Konan's. Natsumi also noted that there was a desk between the two beds and the only window in the room was on the side of the purple bed that was pushed against it.
"Sorry about this Natsumi" Konan's apologized, pulling the dark haired girl's attention away from the room as she turned to meet Konan's gaze. "I thought I'd take a quick shower before you got here but then I misplaced my phone when I was getting ready so I was a little preoccupied when I should've been outside to get you" Konan explained.
Natsumi opened her mouth to wave of the apology but before she could speak, she was cut off by Sasori.
"Your time management skills could definitely use some work. I can't imagine how long she would've been standing out there if it weren't for me" Sasori pointed out.
Turning to the boy, Natsumi saw the redhead casually leaning against the wall by the door with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes closed as he looked downwards.
"Well wasn't she fortunate that her senpai came to her rescue?" Konan said with dry sarcasm that made Sasori scoff.
Before the boy could retort though he was cut short by the arrival of Kisame as he walked into the doorway reaching up to take hold of the top of the doorframe whilst he leaned forward with his usual grin on his shark like features.
"Oh looks like a party in here" Kisame commented as he nodded to Konan and Sasori in acknowledgement before looking to Natsumi. "Well look who's here" he said acknowledging the girl.
"What do you want Kisame?" Sasori asked sounding slightly annoyed as he shifted his gaze to the tall boy.
"Just stopping by to see what you were all doing" Kisame said innocently.
"Mmhm" Sasori said doubtfully as he closed his eyes again.
"Someone sounds like they didn't have a good day at work" Kisame teased the redhead earning a glare while Konan released a slight chuckle at the antics of the pair.
"Don't you have a phone to find?" Sasori pointed out in an annoyed tone that made Konan's eyes light up in realization before she returned to shuffling through the clothes on her floor in a quick pace.
Natsumi felt out of place looking among the three Akatsuki members before her as Konan seemed occupied, Sasori looked as if he could fall asleep while standing up, and Kisame was now entering the room as he chuckled.
'These three seem like the most unlikely trio of the Akatsuki to be hanging out but even so I'm the most out of place with them. They're all so comfortable around each other' Natsumi thought before turning to Kisame as he stood beside Sasori.
"So are we all just going to stand around while Konan's looks for her phone?" Kisame asked folding his arms behind his head casually.
"Uh do you want some help?" Natsumi offered looking to the blue haired beauty.
Konan turned her head to meet the gaze of Natsumi's brown orbs before shaking her head.
"I couldn't ask you to do that" Konan replied in thanks as a small smile graced her lips before she shifted her gaze to the two boys leaning against her wall. "Do you two think you could keep her busy?" Konan asked.
Kisame turned to see Sasori open his eyes.
"Do you realize how long the shift I worked was?" Sasori asked rhetorically.
"So the kid came to hang out with Konan?" Kisame mumbled under his breath, only catching the attention of the redhead.
"I don't want to be a burden" Natsumi added waving her hands on front of her. "And I really wouldn't mind helping you Konan" Natsumi admitted turning back to the blue haired girl.
Konan's brows rose in surprise at this before smiling in thanks and she gave a nod. Natsumi returned the smile before beginning to sort through some of the various clothes on the floor. Konan gave the dark haired girl another grateful look before she turned her attention back to the two boys.
"You do realize that if you're not going to help, you should probably get out of the way" Konan pointed out making hesitant looks cross the boys' faces as they seemed to contemplate their decision.
At that very moment Natsumi picked up a black lace bra that she quickly hugged to her chest as she felt the heat rush to her face and she turned her body away from the view of Sasori and Kisame.
"Uh maybe we're better doing it ourselves" Natsumi suggested making a confused look cross Konan's face before Natsumi revealed the item to her.
Konan slightly turned her head to the side as she raised a brow in confusion. After a moment of silence her eyes lit up in realization before a small smile crossed her lips to keep her from laughing.
"I don't care if they see a bra or two lying around" Konan said bluntly.
Natsumi's brows rose in surprise at this before the blue haired girl spoke again.
"Don't worry Natsumi it's not like either of them has never seen a bra before" Konan giggled making Natsumi's face heat up more before she gave a nod of understanding as Kisame was heard snickering behind her, further embarrassing the teen.
"Don't laugh at Natsumi for being modest" Sasori chastised Kisame as Konan rolled her eyes.
"The kid really does make my day sometimes" Kisame chuckled before being hit with a t-shirt from Konan.
"If you have energy to joke around maybe you could start helping" Konan stated making Kisame fall silent before removing the article from his head.
"I think I'll pass" Kisame stated before turning to Sasori. "What about you?" he asked.
"You really think I'm one to work for free?" Sasori asked in a sarcastic tone, earning another eye roll from Konan before he and Kisame turned to exit the room.
"See you two around" Kisame called to Natsumi and Konan while Sasori simply nodded as the two gave small waves.
"Have any plans after this Sasori?" Kisame asked as he and redhead were leaving.
Sasori shook his head no.
"Not unless you count a hot shower and catching up on some sleep" Sasori replied in a dry tone.
"Really I was hoping we could get a bite" Kisame said as the two walked out earning a scoff from the redhead.
...
The two young men exited the room leaving the two girls to continue searching. As they started to make their way down the hall, silence befell the two boys until they neared the dorm of Sasori and Deidara.
"'So the kid came to hang out with Konan?'" Sasori repeated Kisame's previous question from earlier, making the boy stiffen he suddenly came to a halt.
Sasori too stopped, before turning to look at Kisame with a knowing look.
"Mm you heard me?" Kisame questioned earning a nod from the redhead.
Kisame grinned.
"Why the sudden interest in who Natsumi spends her time with?" Sasori asked bluntly.
Kisame's grin widened before a light chuckle escaped him.
"I have none" Kisame said with a shrug. "But you know how Itachi can be" Kisame explained.
"So Itachi has you keeping an eye on her?" Sasori asked with a brow raised in interest.
"Eh" Kisame said with a shrug. "He asked but I won't tell, at least not until I get my own entertainment out of it" Kisame laughed making Sasori roll his eyes before turning away from Kisame.
"Just keep me out of whatever drama you're trying to cause" Sasori called over his shoulder, making Kisame's laughter cease.
"Oh come on Sasori, you know how Itachi can be, I just recommend keeping the kid out of harm's way" he finished making Sasori come to a halt.
The red head turned to glare at Kisame but before he could utter a retort, he was cut off by an all too familiar and in his opinion annoying voice.
"Yo Sasori, Kisame, what are you guys doing out here?" Deidara's voice called as he stepped out of him and Sasori's dorm.
The blonde wore a pair of grey sweat pants with a black long sleeved shirt and a pair of white socks. He had a light blue towel around his neck and a kind smile as he walked towards the two boys.
"I just got up so I was heading to take a shower" Deidara stated as he casually scratched the back of his neck as he laughed. "Do you guys want to do something after though un?" he asked.
He was unaware of the annoyed glare Sasori was sending to him before he huffed and turned to leave again.
"Sasori" Kisame called. "Just keep in mind what we talked about and keep it to yourself" Kisame warned making the redhead scoff before turning into his room and slamming the door shut.
"Huh I wonder what his problem is" Deidara stated obliviously before turning to see Kisame already walking away as well. "So I take that neither of you want to hang out hm" Deidara said with a slight sigh before turning to make his way to the bathroom.
...
Meanwhile back in Konan's room the girls had sorted through most of what was on the floor.
"I don't know how we haven't found it yet" Konan said with an exasperated sigh as she stood from where she was kneeling and placed her hands on her hips in frustration. "I'm really sorry Natsumi. You wanted an interview, not a maid job" Konan stated apologetically.
"No it's ok" Natsumi said dismissively. "Besides I wanted my interviews to be more personal anyways" Natsumi stated before her gaze subconsciously shifted to the pile of intimates that had been made since the girl's started.
'But this is definitely is a lot more personal than I thought' Natsumi thought. 'I can't imagine what it would've been like seeing things like this when I interviewed the other members ... especially considering the fact that the other members are all guys" Natsumi thought as a light pink blush crossed her face.
Konan released a light laugh at the dark haired girl's antics, bringing Natsumi out of her thoughts as she looked up to the blue haired girl.
"Probably not what you had in mind" Konan pointed out earning a smile and nod from Natsumi.
Konan smiled at the teen before releasing a heavy sigh and falling back onto her bed.
"Ow" Konan suddenly exclaimed startling Natsumi as she watched the blue haired girl shift around on her bed, feeling underneath her back before pulling her phone out from underneath a t-shirt.
"Is that your phone?" Natsumi asked with a dead panned expression.
"Yeah it is" Konan said hanging her head as she sighed.
Natsumi soon followed suit, leaving a momentary pause of silence in the room.
"I guess we should probably start the interview then" Konan suggested lifting her gaze back up to meet Natsumi's.
"Hn" Natsumi agreed with a nod.
"But I have something I want to ask you" Konan suddenly stated making a confused look cross Natsumi's face.
"Uh sure" Natsumi replied.
Konan rose from where she sat on the floor, making her way over to the desk and opening a drawer to remove a black makeup bag. The blue haired girl turned to Natsumi with a smile that made a skeptical look cross the young girl's face.
"I think it might be more fun if I answered your questions while I did your makeup" Konan suggested.
Natsumi's brows rose in surprise before a thoughtful look crossed the girl's face.
"Uh I'm not too sure since I have to write down your answers" Natsumi replied as she sheepishly ran a hand through her dark locks.
Konan's eyes lit up in realization before she gave a nod of understanding.
"What if we recorded the interview so you could just write it all down later" Konan suggested.
A smile lit up Natsumi's face before the dark haired teen gave a nod of agreement and the two girls started. Konan invited Natsumi to sit on her bed with her, offering the teen a hair tie and allowing her to pull her locks into a ponytail as she readied the makeup items she would be using.
"So you don't really wear makeup do you?" Konan asked as she took out a primer and squeezed it into her hand.
Natsumi gave a thoughtful hum before shutting her eyes as Konan began to rub the product onto her face.
"Not really" Natsumi replied. "I mean I'll wear it for special events and all but it's not a daily thing for me" Natsumi explained.
It was quiet for a moment, prompting Natsumi to open her brown orbs to see Konan holding up two different shades of foundation to try and match it to her neck. The focused look on the blue haired girl's face, reminded Natsumi of the way Konan looked when she played at rehearsals. There was no denying the dedication Konan had to the things she cared about. Natsumi knew Konan was invested in her work with the Akatsuki and the fact that she had that same look when doing something as trivial as makeup, made Natsumi feel important.
"Hey Konan when did you start wearing makeup?" Natsumi asked abruptly, taking even herself by surprise.
Konan blinked in surprise.
"I'm guessing this isn't your first interview question?" Konan asked looking to meet Natsumi's gaze.
"Uh no just ... just something I was curious about" Natsumi admitted with a small awkward smile.
Konan smiled at the teen before looking to the side with a thoughtful hum.
"I guess it was during middle school" the blue haired girl replied.
"Really?" Natsumi asked in an intrigued tone.
"Definitely, I mean I'm no expert now but I know I've improved since then since I was rocking a raccoon eye liner look then" Konan joked making Natsumi's eyes light up in surprise. "But I always liked how I could match my shadow to my hair so I kept practicing" Konan said with a shrug before reaching into her makeup bag.
Natsumi gave a nod of understanding before turning her attention to the pallet and brushes Konan had pulled out.
"Um when I did Yahiko and Nagato's interview, they mentioned how you three always hung out" Natsumi said as Konan gave a nod. "Did you have any other friends? Like girls?" Natsumi asked. "Because I'm only asking because I don't think those two would've been much help when learning to do things with makeup" Natsumi explained as Konan gave an amused smile.
"You're right. I guess being friends with more girls would've been more helpful but let me tell you a little secret" Konan said before reaching over and pressing pause on Natsumi's recording.
The black haired teen's brows furrowed in confusion.
"Having two guys as your best friends doesn't always mean you'll miss out on typical girl things" Konan stated. "Those two actually let me practice doing eye shadow and liner on them until I figured it out for myself" Konan said making Natsumi's brows raise in surprise.
Thinking of the two boys, Natsumi couldn't picture the loud Yahiko or quiet Nagato wearing makeup. Seeing the skeptical look Natsumi wore, Konan got up from the bed before reaching underneath and pulling out an old black shoe box. The blue haired girl opened it, shifting through a couple items and papers before holding out a Polaroid that depicted a young orange and a red headed boy with blue smoky eyes. Natsumi's mouth dropped open in shock before she brought a hand to her mouth as she began to laugh.
"No way!" Natsumi exclaimed through her laughter.
Konan smiled before taking the picture back and releasing her own giggle at the memory.
"Those two really are the best friends a girl could ask for" Natsumi said as she tried to calm her laughing.
Konan nodded as she placed the picture back into the box.
"They have their moments" Konan said with smile as she placed the box off to the side. "But you have to promise not to tell them that I told you" Konan said.
Natsumi smiled before giving a nod of agreement. Konan smiled before reaching over and resuming the recording for their interview. Even though it was something so small, Natsumi felt like having Konan share something from her past, made her feel so much closer to her.
"It's actually really cool that you've all managed to stay so close over the years" Natsumi commented as Konan turned back to her to resume doing her makeup.
"It's nice but they're still boys so it's come with its fair share of complications" Konan replied making Natsumi tilt her head curiously.
"Really? What kind?" Natsumi asked.
"Typical things" Konan replied with a shrug. "Everyone always asks which one of them I'm going to end up dating" Konan said as Natsumi gave a nod of understanding.
"I get that" Natsumi said thinking of all the people who assumed she was with Sasuke.
"... and with that territory, no guy wants to date a girl with a guy best friend" Konan stated making Natsumi's brows raise in alarm.
"What?" Natsumi asked.
Konan blinked.
"I'm guessing you haven't had this problem with Itachi's brother?" Konan asked earning a weary head shake from the teen. "Well I guess the best way to explain it is that boys are kind of territorial" Konan said making a perplexed look cross Natsumi's face. "Guys will think that your guy friends are too over protective or that they like you so most just avoid the drama all together and don't date you" Konan explained.
Natsumi looked down as she absorbed this information.
"Do you talk to any boys aside from Itachi's brother?" Konan then asked regaining Natsumi's attention.
"Uh yeah" Natsumi replied with a nod. "Now that I think about it most of my friends are boys" Natsumi thought aloud.
"Mmhm" Konan hummed in reply. "Do you like any of them?" Konan asked taking the teen by surprise.
"No" Natsumi responded with a head shake.
"Ok um do you think any of them like you?" Konan asked making the dark haired teen stiffen as she thought of a certain boy in the group.
"Maybe" Natsumi replied.
"Ok well in that case, I can tell you right now that that boy doesn't like Itachi's brother" Konan stated making Natsumi raise a brow at her.
"How did you know?" Natsumi asked.
"Because boys are stupid" Konan replied.
Natsumi smiled as she released a breath.
"Fair enough but a lot of boys don't like Sasuke and I think that's because they're jealous that almost every girl in school is apparently in love with him" Natsumi said making Kona release a light laugh.
"Well girls can be stupid too" Konan replied making Natsumi chuckle as she gave a nod of agreement.
"Tell me about it" Natsumi said.
"On the bright side though, at least you won't have that whole issue with Itachi" Konan said with a reassuring smile as Natsumi notably stiffened.
It grew silent for a second as Natsumi could swear her heart stopped.
"What?" Natsumi asked after taking a moment to find her voice.
"You like Itachi right?" Konan asked making Natsumi's brows raise in alarm.
"I-I like – wh- no" Natsumi said waving her hands in front of her. "I mean Itachi is great but ... I don't like him or anything" Natsumi lied.
Konan gave the girl a small smile as she furrowed her brows and then placed a comforting hand on the girl's shoulder.
"You don't have to worry about me telling anyone" Konan stated in a reassuring voice that inwardly shattered the teen girl.
"What gave it away?" Natsumi asked in a defeated tone as her gaze dropped to her lap.
"It's not obvious it's just something I've noticed after a while." Konan clarified. "No offense but you have to admit it's a little strange that Itachi's little brother's friend hangs out with us at our band practices quite a bit without said little brother." Konan explained, then gaining a small teasing smile. "And you're obviously not there to hang out with your two senpai's because I know how those two are" Konan joked.
If there was ever a time to want to be invisible, it would've been now for Natsumi as sat feeling numb as she processed Konan's words.
"Do you think Itachi knows?" Natsumi asked in a monotone voice.
"No" Konan replied honestly, allowing the dark haired teen a bit of relief. "Are you going to tell him?" Konan asked.
"Not likely" Natsumi admitted earning a confused look from Konan.
"How come?" the blue haired girl asked.
Natsumi sighed.
"Sasuke would kill me" Natsumi replied.
Konan released a light giggle.
"You know who you like isn't something he should get a say in?" Konan asked.
"It is when it's his brother" Natsumi retorted. "He's going to lose it and ... it's all too complicated to explain" Natsumi sighed.
"I see" Konan replied with a nod of understanding. "I know things have been off for Itachi and his brother for a while but you should keep in mind that their relationship has nothing to do with you and vice versa. All of the relationships should be kept separate" Konan advised.
'It sounds so easy when she puts it like that but I know it won't be' Natsumi thought.
Deciding that it would be better to agree and move on, Natsumi gave a nod of understanding before speaking.
"Thank you Konan" Natsumi said.
"No problem Natsumi" Konan said with a smile. "If you ever need to talk I'll be here" she offered as Natsumi nodded again in understanding.
"Hn that's good to hear" Natsumi replied.
"Anyways why don't we get off the heavy topics and start the interview?" Konan asked trying to lighten the mood.
"Yeah and maybe you can finish the makeup you started?" Natsumi suggested making a giggle escape Konan before she held up an angled brush.
"Good point, why don't you push record and I'll start your brows?" the blue haired beauty suggested earning a 'hn' from Natsumi as she did as she was told and the girls went about doing the interview.

Konan's interview finished before the blue haired girl finished Natsumi's makeup, leaving the two to talk about other things like school and their plans for the rest of the day. When they finished Natsumi thanked Konan for the makeup before deciding to call her mom to come get her. It didn't take long until Natsumi agreed to meet her outside while Konan had informed her that she was going to head to Yahiko's dorm to see if he could watch a movie with her.
"You got your makeup done?" Natsumi's mother asked in awe as she watched her daughter slide into the car.
"Hn" Natsumi replied with a shy smile before her mother reached out taking the girl's chin in her hand to turn Natsumi's face so she could see the look from all angles.
It's not that she'd never seen her daughter in makeup; it was just a rare occurrence unless there was a special occasion tied to it.
Right now Natsumi had her full face makeup done complete with contour, a light blush, and high light. Her eye makeup was a half cut crease done with warm toned shadows. Her lips were simpler, seeming to just be glossed.
"You look pretty" Natsumi's mother complimented her daughter as she released her daughter's face and turned forward in her seat.
"Thanks mom" Natsumi replied with a small smile.
"So did you have a good interview?" her mother asked as she pulled the car forward.
"Hn" Natsumi replied with a nod as her mother glanced over to her.
"That's good" her mother commented. "You should see if she can do your makeup for New Year's" the older woman suggested catching the attention of her daughter. "For the Uchiha's party" the woman clarified making Natsumi raise a brow in question.
"I thought you were going to help me get ready?" Natsumi asked.
Natsumi's mother released a sigh making an uncomfortable knot form in the teen's stomach.
"I had a last minute conference come up in the states" her mother admitted.
"Seriously?" Natsumi asked in disbelief.
"Natsumi I know" her mother said glancing to the teen with an apologetic look.
"When do you leave?" Natsumi asked her mother.
"Tonight" the woman replied earning a sigh from the teen.
"We had a plan" Natsumi sighed. "You were going to help me get ready before the festival and then I'd meet you at the Uchiha's with Sasuke for the party" Natsumi said dejectedly.
"I'm sorry Natsumi" Natsumi's mother apologized as her gaze shifted back to the road.
"Hn" Natsumi replied sitting back into her seat with a heavy sigh.
There was a brief silence between the two as the drive went on.
"It's ok mom" Natsumi said breaking the silence as she looked over to her mother.
The two shared a look, Natsumi doing her best to keep a reassuring look on her face as her mother furrowed her brows in concern.
There was an undeniable feeling of disappointment welling up in the teen, but regardless of that she just wanted to be able to put her mother at ease.
'It's not too bad; I should try to focus on the positives. I never thought I would get to spend this much time with her for my break and now I only have one interview left' Natsumi thought looking out the window. 'Itachi's' she thought feeling her heart rate slightly increase at the thought of the Uchiha.
...
Not being one to dwell on her disappointment, Natsumi tried to keep busy upon arriving home with her mother. As the older woman went about packing for her trip, her teen daughter busied herself with listening to the interview she did with Konan and writing down what she needed from the discussion. Natsumi wasn't keeping track of the time, becoming so absorbed in her work, that she didn't notice when her mother stood in her doorway until the woman called out to her.
"Natsumi!" her mother called, making the dark haired teen jolt in surprise before turning to see the older woman with her suitcase in hand.
"You're going now?" Natsumi asked pulling out one of ear phones as her mother gave a nod.
Natsumi paused her audio and removed her other earbud before rising from her seat at her vanity. She made her way over to her mother, being pulled into a hug that she halfheartedly returned.
"Do you have any plans this evening?" her mother asked as she released the girl.
"Maybe heating up some leftovers and finishing up with my notes for Konan's interview" the teen replied making her mother furrow her brows.
"You should call a friend to see if they want to go to dinner with you" her mother suggested.
Natsumi raised a brow before giving a dismissive wave.
"I'm not really in the mood to go anywhere" Natsumi stated.
"Are you upset?" her mother asked surprising the teen.
'She's usually not this pushy when she goes on trips, she must feel really guilty' Natsumi thought.
"No" Natsumi said not bothering to hide the confusion in her tone as she looked at the concerned look her mother wore.
"You look so pretty you should do something" her mother pressed making Natsumi's brows knit in further confusion. "Why don't you call Sasuke?" her mother suggested.
Natsumi wore a deadpanned expression for a moment as she looked at her mother.
"He's probably busy with his family" Natsumi responded.
"Well what about Naruto?" her mother asked. "Or the Hyuga girl who you were with for Christmas?" the woman went on making Natsumi raise a brow at her in question.
"Why are you insisting on having me spend time with one of them tonight?" Natsumi asked bluntly.
Her mother's brows rose in alarm.
"Honey I just thought ..." her mother started to reply before trailing off and releasing a heavy sigh. "I feel awful about leaving you Natsumi" her mother admitted with a sad look in her eyes.
The woman reached out, placing a hand on Natsumi's cheek before releasing a sigh.
"I'm so sorry" her mother said in a soft tone.
"Mom-" Natsumi started to speak until being cut off by the woman when she was pulled into another tight embrace.
"I tried to ask them to send someone else" her mother said. "It's our first New Year with just the two of us, and I hate to think of you being all alone" the woman said as Natsumi heard her voice starting to crack. "You have been so good about all of this and it's not fair. I keep thinking about how your father was always working, and how much I'm like that now. I wish we had more time to spend together. You're alone so often now but you're still on top of your grades and so responsible. I'm proud of you Natsumi. But I'm also so sorry that you can't have a normal childhood because of me" the woman said shakily.
Hearing her mother sniffle, told the dark haired teen that her mother was crying, prompting Natsumi to wrap her arms around her before patting her back to comfort her.
"It's ok mom" Natsumi tried to reassure her mother. "You don't need to apologize for anything" the teen went on. "I wish we could spend more time together too, but I know how important your work is. Things are hard but I'm happy" Natsumi admitted. "I never had this much freedom in Kyoto, I never had friends or even the opportunity to have any, but thanks to you I do." Natsumi said honestly as she thought of the many people she came to know since arriving in Konoha.
"Oh Natsumi" her mother breathed out as she tightened her hold on her daughter. "I love you" her mother said.
"I love you too mom" Natsumi replied until the sound of her mother's phone rang out.
Pulling back from the hug, Natsumi watched as her mother quickly wiped her eyes before bringing the device to her ear.
"Yes, yes sir I am on my way now ... Yes" her mother spoke into her phone before hanging up and sticking the device back into her pocket. "I'm going to have to go now" her mother said looking back to the teen.
"Hn" Natsumi replied with a nod.
'She felt bad but why did she want me to spend time with a friend tonight?' Natsumi thought before a thought struck her. 'She said she's more at ease when she knows I'm with friends' Natsumi realized before running a hand through her hair.
"I'll try to squeeze in a call before you head over to the festival and I should be back the day after you start back at school. If you need anything don't hesitate to call" her mother instructed.
"Hn" Natsumi replied with a nod. "I think I might call Sasuke and Naruto to see if they want to get something to eat or watch a movie" Natsumi said making a small smile cross her mother's face.
"I love you" her mother said.
"I love you too" Natsumi replied before her mother turned to leave.
...
"Ah that really sucks Natsumi" Naruto said in a sympathetic tone as he looked at the dark haired girl who sat between him and Sasuke at Ichiraku Ramen.
"It's no big deal" Natsumi replied with a shrug.
Staying true to her word, Natsumi had called the boys and the Uzamaki was more than happy to suggest that the trio go to Ichiraku. After a little more convincing of Sasuke, Naruto picked up the two dark haired teens from their perspective homes and driving to the ramen shop. Upon arrival Naruto sensed something was off about Natsumi's mood so he did what he does best and persisted until she told him and Sasuke what was going on.
"Well at least you'll still have us for New Year's" Naruto said trying to brighten the mood until earning a look from Sasuke.
The Uchiha shook his head at the boy, making Natsumi scoff as a small smile crossed her lips.
"I appreciate the help Sasuke but I know Naruto is just trying to be a good friend" Natsumi said in defense of the blonde.
"Hn" Sasuke replied shifting his gaze to the side while Naruto sent a smile to Natsumi.
Not long after this their order was brought out to them by Ayami and Teuchi. The teens went about eating in silence for a moment before Sasuke suddenly spoke.
"So do you need my mom to help you get ready for New Years?" the Uchiha asked glancing over to Natsumi and earning a head shake no.
"Your mom is going to have enough on her plate with setting everything up for the party" Natsumi replied. "Besides once I tell Temari I'm pretty sure, she can help me get ready before the festival" Natsumi reasoned out, making Naruto perk up as Sasuke gave a nod of understanding.
"Speaking of the New Year's festival" the blonde then stated loudly, making both dark haired teens turn to him with a brow raised. "I think it's going to be the perfect time to start on my top resolution for the New Year" Naruto announced.
Sasuke scoffed and rolled his eyes in disinterest before picking up his water to take a drink.
'I guess he must have told Sasuke what it is already ... unless Sasuke already knows it's going to be something stupid' Natsumi thought as she glanced between the two boys.
"I'm going to start being way more up front about things" Naruto stated earning a smile and nod from Natsumi before she returned her attention to her bowl.
The dark haired girl picked her chop sticks back up, then began using them to bring a bite of noodles to her mouth as she listened to Naruto go on.
"So I'm going to need a huge favor from you Natsumi" Naruto said making the girl raise a brow at him as she continued to eat. "Can I ask you out?" Naruto suddenly asked holding his hands together in front of him.
The question caught Natsumi off guard, making her choke on the noodles in her mouth while Sasuke spit out the water he was drinking. Both dark haired teens had a coughing fit, shortly followed by Naruto jumping from his seat to pat them on the back and sooth the coughing.
"Are you guys ok?" Naruto asked in a worried tone as Sasuke and Natsumi went about clearing their throats and trying to catch their breath.
"What is wrong with you?" Sasuke asked turning in his seat to look at Naruto who now wore a confused expression.
"What are you talking about teme?" Naruto asked retracting his hands from the two.
"I think he means about what you asked" Natsumi clarified turning around as well to face the blonde.
"Oh!" Naruto exclaimed as his eyes lit up in understanding. "I asked if you guys were ok because you were chocking" Naruto explained making Natsumi face palm.
"Not about that dobe, I meant about you asking Natsumi out" Sasuke stated.
Naruto's brows rose in alarm before a smile lit up his face.
"Oh" Naruto stated.
The blonde boy gave the two a closed eyed smile before sheepishly scratching the back of his head.
"Yeah I don't mean like for real you know?" Naruto asked. "Just for practice" he said making a confused look cross Natsumi's face. "I uh kind of just need you to listen to me talk" Naruto said returning to his seat beside the girl. "You see, I like Sakura. And don't get me wrong you're great but I've always liked her" Naruto explained holding his hands up in defense. "And sure I'm glad that she'll hangout with me when she does, and even be my date for school dances, but I want to tell her how much she means to me and see if she'll really go out with me" Naruto explained making Sasuke scoff while Natsumi felt emotionally conflicted.
'On one hand Naruto is my friend and I should want to help him, but I also know that this isn't going to end well for him because Sakura likes Sasuke' Natsumi thought. 'And then there's the other hand where I'm friends with Hinata and I know she likes Naruto even though he likes Sakura ... God this whole thing is a huge mess' Natsumi thought before shifting her gaze to Sasuke. 'Meanwhile this ass probably could care less about it because he just wants to stay out of the whole thing' Natsumi thought before glancing back to Naruto.
The black haired girl released a heavy sigh before replying.
"No" Natsumi said making Naruto's smile shatter. "I'm sorry Naruto but I rather not get involved" she explained as Naruto's brows furrowed.
"Oh come on Natsumi" Naruto pleaded. "It's one thing to think about confessing, then practice it in the mirror and then say it to another person" Naruto went on clasping his hands together. "I really want to have this talk with her at the festival but I need the practice" the blonde said.
"Look Naruto I just don't-" Natsumi started to say until being cut off by the blonde.
"Please Natsumi I already asked Sasuke and he said-" Naruto started to say until being cut off by Sasuke.
"I told you not to tell her idiot!" Sasuke snapped making the blonde jump.
Natsumi immediately shot a grin to the Uchiha, earning a pointed glare from him in return.
"Shut up Natsumi" Sasuke said making a small giggle escape the girl until he elbowed her in the side.
"So you went to Sasuke before you came to me?" Natsumi asked turning back to Naruto and earning another elbow from Sasuke.
"Well I didn't really want to announce it and if I went to anyone else, Sakura would've found out" Naruto explained.
Natsumi scoffed while Sasuke rolled his eyes.
'We're sure in for an interesting New Year' Natsumi thought.
"Oh come on Natsumi" Naruto pleaded to the dark haired girl. "I can't think of anyone else I could ask... hmmm" Naruto started to say until trailing off in thought.
Natsumi raised a brow at the boy as he gave a thoughtful hum.
"Well never mind" Naruto said allowing Natsumi to release breath of relief. "Because now that I think of it I think I can ask Hinata since she seems pretty nice" Naruto thought aloud, making Natsumi stiffen.
'That is the cruelest joke the universe could play' Natsumi thought in alarm before holding a hand up to the blonde.
"I'll do it" Natsumi stated making Naruto's face light up with a smile.
"Thanks Natsumi" Naruto said happily. "I really appreciate it and the best part is that I already have everything I'm going to say planned out so it's only going to take like 30 minutes tops" Naruto said proudly as Natsumi stiffened again in shock.
'30 minutes?!' Natsumi thought. 'This is going to take forever!'

A/N: Hey guys. I'm back. It's definitely been a lot longer than I anticipated so I have a lot to say and no idea where to begin. For starters I guess I would like to thank each and every one of you who offered your condolences over the loss of my father. It meant so much and I was truly touched by the care and concern you had. It's been difficult trying to adjust to life without him and I will admit I've struggled a lot. Normal things I've enjoyed like working out or even writing seemed impossible since I wasn't finding joy in anything. But I'm getting better and I appreciate the patience you've all had with me.
