Day 47: Gomorrah
Guess what everyone, my Top 4 favorite first bosses are all bosses from Platinum Games...and no, this is not an April Fools Joke.
Platinum Games does a lot right with their games, but one thing that they almost always knock out of the park are their boss battles, especially their first ones. Guess these magnificent bastards know how to make a good impression then? And that's good, because a first impression means everything in this day and age.
I already talked about Little Eddie from Mad World and Engels from Nier: Automata, so what four other bosses from this game company are there to talk about? Well you know how I said a few days ago Waterblight Ganon was my favorite Nintendo exclusive first boss...that was a lie too.
Lyra: You lied about your favorite Nintendo and Playstation first boss. Dude you are losing credibility left and right in this last leg of the marathon.
Me: I know...
Yeah, my idiot brain strikes again because for some strange reason I totally forgot that Bayonetta 2 is on Wii U and Switch only, unlike the first games which was on PS3 and Xbox 360. This is what happens when I don't pay attention. But that's in the past and we must look to the present, so at #4 we have the first boss of Bayonetta 2, Gomorrah!
Lyra: Ahem!
Me: What is it now, Lyra?
Lyra: I'm pretty sure that Belief is the first boss?
Me: I personally consider Belief to be a mini-boss, so let's just agree to disagree.
Where was I...hmm...oh right, Gomorrah!
That's right, Gomorrah, the same demon that acted as a finisher in the first Bayonetta is now the game's first boss in the sequel, and boy howdy does it know how to set the events of the game in motion.
After summoning the demon to finish off Belief, Gomorrah begins to return back to Inferno only to break free and begin to fight back against Bayonetta. Jeanne jumps in the way and takes the attack for her friend, only for Jeanne to get the literal soul knocked out of her and dragged into Inferno.
Like I said, this cutscene sets up the events of the game perfectly. It sets up the mystery on why Bayonetta's demons are rebelling against her, it establishes the fact that demons are now enemies in this game, and it sets up Bayonetta's quest to get Jeanne's soul back.
This boss has so much going for it already, and I haven't even gotten to the actual fight, yet which is a spectacle all on its own.
The fight against Gomorrah may be simple, but hot damn is it a fun one! As storm clouds loom overhead, Gomorrah is scaling a skyscraper while Bayonetta tries to pacify the beast by sprouting some wings and flying around and attacking it. Gomorrah will attack you by either slashing at you with its claws, spewing some of its dragon breath, and trying to bite at you. You can either try and keep your distance by shooting at it,or getting up close and personal and giving it a good old fashioned beat down at the risk of getting attacked by its jaws or claws. But hey, that's why this game has a dodge feature...and by dodging you also have the potential to trigger Witch Time to rack up even more damage.
Eventually, Gomorrah reaches the top of the skyscrapper and with nowhere else to run, Bayonetta starts to wipe out the last of the demon's health. Gomorrah's attacks remain the same, but at some points the demon will make like Kirby and use its mouth to suck Bayonetta in, in an attempt to devour her, but you can easily get out of that attack through use of a quick time event.
After taking out the last of Gomorrah's health, Bayonetta summons Labolas, which promptly mauls the demon, ending this fight.
While the fight does boil down to just dodging, attacking, and doing the occasional quick time event, the atmosphere and the way this boss sets up future events for the story more than make up for it.
And tomorrow, we see what the first Bayonetta game has in store.
