CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN
It was late. Ginny and Harry were alone in the Gryffindor common room. "You're worried,"Harry noted.
Ginny nodded slowly. "I'm worried about a lot of things."
"You destroyed the diary and the locket. Dumbledore and my parents destroyed the ring. If Dumbledore's right, we're halfway to getting rid of all Voldemort's horcruxes."
"Halfway isn't close enough for me." It was hard for Ginny to explain. It felt as though Voldemort had been a continual presence throughout her life, ever since she was born and since the coincidence of that birth had caused him to see her as a threat. She could never really rest until she and the world was free of him. "I know Dumbledore thinks Voldemort's pet is one. And that means we only have to find something connected with Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw and we'll have the whole set. But that's a pretty big 'only'. And even if we do that, we've still got to take care of Voldemort himself."
Harry nodded slowly. "What's he like?"
Ginny thought hard. "Cold,"she said at last. "That's the only way I can describe it. He cares about nothing but himself. Even those that serve him, I think he only sees them in terms of how he can use them as tools. He wouldn't know how to have a friend."
"You've got one thing over him then,"Harry suggested. "You've got friends. People who love you." He looked away, awkwardly.
"Is there something you want to tell me, Harry Potter?"Ginny asked teasingly.
But when Harry looked back at her, his expression was serious. "I love you, Ginny Weasley."
Ginny hadn't expected him to say it. But now that he had, she had no doubts about how to respond. "I love you too." She kissed him lightly.
"Are you still worried?"he asked.
Ginny smiled. "Maybe a bit less than I was."
Ginny had no idea where she was or how she'd got there, or indeed how she'd ended up in her school uniform. She could feel ground beneath her feet but all she could see was mist. Then she made out a shape in the mist, coming towards her. She almost called out but the cry died in her throat when she saw who it was. Voldemort.
"Ginny Weasley,"he said slowly, every syllable filled with contempt. "The mistake. The girl elevated to the status of a hero simply because of a misunderstanding."
"The misunderstanding was yours, not anyone else's!"Ginny shouted, trying her best to hide the fear she felt. "You went after me, you killed my parents, but you couldn't get me! You've never managed to kill me and you won't even manage now!"
Voldemort gave a theatrical sigh. "I would dearly wish to prove you wrong. But I am afraid that, for the moment, I am unable to kill you, much as I would like to."
Ginny was puzzled for a moment, then it came to her. "A dream. This is a dream."
Voldemort nodded slowly. "I have always been curious about this link that exists between us. I must admit I don't fully understand it. All I know is that every now and then I get flashes of you and your pathetically small life. So, I thought it might be interesting to see if I could use it. Use it to show you how insignificant you are."
Ginny found herself emboldened. "If I'm so insignificant, why are you here?"
"Because I will get round to you in time. But I have bigger fish to fry for now. Rest assured, you will be hearing news of me very soon."
Ginny woke up with a gasp. The other fifth year Gryffindor girls stared at her. For a moment, Ginny contemplated explaining to them what she'd seen. But that would take up time and she had a feeling that was time she didn't have. "I need to see Professor Dumbledore."
