Jay returned to his desk just as I pulled my phone out of my pocket to look at the reason why my phone was vibrating. Luckily, I didn't have to answer as Voight walked into the room with a determined look on his face, which meant he was seeking answers with this case.
"Where we at?" He questioned, his mouth twisted up tightly as he looked around at which one of us was going to respond first. I could tell that this case was hitting a nerve, whether it was because she was a young victim who still had a bright future ahead of them or some entirely different scenario I wasn't thinking of right now.
"No match on ballistics at all." Kevin was the first to speak up as he rubbed at his neck tensely, his finger pointedly narrowing at the picture of Hannah on the board. "AK's found at the scene are clean. The SUV, however, popped up stolen. Basically a cold trail so far."
"I know you saw a Beretta on the offender who abducted Hannah." Kim filled in the silence as she stood next to Voight. "But they didn't use it at the scene."
"There are no trackers. Or dye packs on this money." Kevin followed her insight with more bad news. "IDOC did send me a list of cats on patrol with similar backgrounds but we can't do anything with this list, Sarge. Nobody's staying in jail anymore."
"Hannah's aunt is proving difficult to find." Antonio lamented as he looked away from his computer screen. "The vacant on file was cleared out a year ago. Anne left a forwarding address. I checked but the landlord said she was only there for a month."
"Well, that's not good because every piece of paper we have on Hannah is dated from that move." Looking down at the file in front of her, Kim physically sighed like she was warding off a headache. "Health insurance, cell phone registration, and school enrollment."
"And the last time Anne filed taxes, she made about fourteen grand," Antonio added adamantly as he took a step towards the board. "That's well below the poverty line."
"Probably crashing with family." Al pitched in, standing on the other side of Voight. He no doubt had a lot on his mind, which is why he looked far from being on board with this case. I knew Voight was keeping it on the down-low, but I had heard things, and none of it was good.
"No, there is no other family." Voight was resolved having known Hannah's background from the beginning, although I could see we were all wondering how in the first place. "Anne's brother, Hannah's dad, he's in jail. Got busted for dealing four years ago."
"Is that how you met Hannah?" Antonio asked the unspoken question just after I had that last thought about what connected him to her.
"No, I've known her since she was seven." Voight didn't elaborate any further, and no one else felt the need to push for more information. He had his reasons, and we had most of the time, trusted in those reasons being revealed to us in due time.
"Got a whole lot of nothing." Jay settled as he pushed back in his chair and glanced over the text on his phone. "No DNA and the gloves they wore gave us zero fingerprints. About the only thing they did by the book."
"We didn't have eyes in the back alley," I confirmed, not allowing the silence to consume us for long as I pulled up the surveillance that had been captured at the time of the robbery. "But we got footage inside." Everyone gathered around my desk as I played back the video. We watched as people who worked at the credit union were pushed around and then each camera was spray painted black. "That's all of it. That's not a lot to go on."
"Look, twelve minutes before that robbery, those two men forced Hannah into a car. Why" Jabbing his finger towards the screen, his expression was intense, while every fiber of him was screaming that we still had work to do. "Okay, until something pops up on the robbery, let's start with the abduction. Find Hannah's aunt. Where they've been living. Who they've been in contact with. That's going to lead to who took her." Most everyone scattered back to their desks at that remark, including Voight. As time went on, Adam grabbed the phone on his desk to follow up on a lead. I had just finished striking out on a lead of my own when my phone rang again. "Hello?" I felt like for the first time I was able to answer Eva's call in front of the team. It was strange, and yet I was relieved that I no longer had to hide this secret from them.
"Hailey?" Eva's voice escaped on the other end as I stepped into the break room at the end of the hall. "I'm going with Betsey now."
"Are you still okay with going?"
"I guess. When are you going to come get me?"
"I'm not sure yet. We're still working on a case, but I'll make sure to call Betsey before I come get you."
"What if I don't like this?"
"With being with a nanny or something else?"
"Being with a nanny."
"Then we'll figure something else out. In the meantime, I want you to give this a chance, just like you did with the after-school program. We don't have a lot of other options right now, so I really want you to try and make this work."
"Okay. Is Betsey nice? She seems nice."
"She is."
"What about Owen?"
"I don't know him personally, but I do know his mom, Natalie. She's helped me a few times when I've had to deal with work issues. I would think her son is nice as well, but you're going to have to try and get to know him and see. But if you need to call me for any reason, you can. Are you still feeling sick?"
"Not really." She didn't really go into any detail and I made a mental note to ask her again later. "What if you don't answer?"
"Then leave me a message and we can talk about it when we're both together."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
"Betsey wants to talk to you." I heard a rustle over the phone before I could even say goodbye as she handed the phone to the nanny.
"Hailey."
"Hi, Betsey. How are you?"
"I'm good. I just wanted to let you know I just picked up Eva and Owen and we'll be heading over to Natalie's house in just a few minutes."
"Sounds good. Thank you again for taking Eva. How is she really?"
"No problem. She looks a little tired from the day. Otherwise she seems okay." I imagined her looking back at Eva as she stood nearby but put some distance between her and the nanny. "If I had to guess, she misses you."
"Yeah, I figured. I just wish I knew how to ease that anxiety."
"We'll figure it out. I'm right there with you. Natalie is too."
"Thanks. I appreciate that. I know you have some experience with helping Owen with Natalie working long hours, but if you have anything that could help Eva, please let me know.
"I will. I know you told Eva not to worry, but that goes for you too. I can tell she's going through a lot, but she's probably picking up on any worry you're feeling as well."
"You're probably right." I heard Antonio's words echo back into the break room. "Have her call me if she needs to talk."
"I will. Bye Hailey."
