Chapter 48: Sweet Tooth.
"You know, sensei -"
"I'm not your sensei, Kawasaki-san. As I have told you before, you may simply call me, L."
Saki Kawasaki tries not to feel annoyed. This is not the first time this exchange has taken place. Though she had picked the Detective Q course as an elective, over time she had come to appreciate the subtle nuances of the subject. However dealing with the weird and eccentric personalities of the people enrolled in this course did take a toll on her patience.
Case in point, this guy who liked to be simply known as L.
"Well, you did give a two hour lecture today. I don't know how that doesn't make you a teacher in this university."
"Officially, my position is that of a guest lecturer. Though, if I were being honest, maybe after I retire, I can see myself taking up a teaching position in this place. Not for the sake of the students, mind you. But the delicious sweets and confectionaries served in the dining hall on a daily basis. The strawberry shortcakes are to die for."
Saki Kawasaki would have teased him a little bit for his poor choice of words, but someone else beat her to the punch line.
"Here's the strawberry shortcake you ordered, L." Light Yagami said as he placed a parcel in front of L. "I hope that makes us even."
Saki Kawasaki looked at L. L didn't look at Light. He took out the cake, the small plastic spoon kept inside, carved out a small slice and placed it in his mouth. "Very funny Light. Couldn't resist the opportunity, could you. This would be your downfall, my friend." He looked at Kawasaki. "What percentage do you think he has of being Kira?"
Saki Kawasaki looked at Light Yagami. "I don't know. Um, about 50%"
"Very clever." L murmured. "You just increased your percentage of being in this class to about 60%. You are not really talented in deduction, Kawa…" He trailed off, taking note of Light, listening with rapt attention. Then L continued, as if it was no big deal. "Very few people are. But what you lack for in talent, you more than make up for it in hard work, grit and determination. You also picked the right partner."
Saki Kawasaki scoffed. "It's more like he picked me. Hikigaya is a weird one."
"Then what will you call me?" L asked, savoring the strawberry on top.
Saki Kawasaki thought about it for a second. "How about, sensei?"
L sighed. "What do you think, Light? Am I qualified to be your sensei?"
Light Yagami smiled. "I wouldn't mind calling you, sensei, L." He then looked at the blue haired woman. "Sorry, I haven't introduced myself to you properly. My name is Light Yagami."
"Hello." Saki Kawasaki bowed. "I'm Kira."
Light Yagami blinked. L almost dropped his slice of cake. Saki Kawasaki blushed, awkwardly. "Sorry, I'm not good at introductions. My roommate Subaru Konoe, he, I mean she, told me, I should go with a joke. But now I realize that's a horrible joke. Kira has killed way too many people. It's not funny, I get that. What was I thinking. Excuse me, sensei."
Saki Kawasaki left the lecture hall awkwardly. L finished his strawberry shortcake before turning to Light. "What do you think, Light?"
Light smiled. "I think she's cute."
