Remus' Diary

13th of December 1975
It's almost Christmas time and I'm happy to announce that Hugo is completely toilet trained! The Christmas trees and decorations are up after all these years here I still find it enchanting. We were in the Great Hall having breakfast. Sirius is still seeing that sixth-year and she seems nice… likes to talk about herself a lot though.
"Have you got Quidditch practice today?" Sirius asked James.
"Yes" James answered.
At that point the owls started the fly above us. James got letter from his parents, I got the Daily Prophet, Peter got a Victoria sponge cake from his mum and Sirius got his Witch Boy magazine. When Peter opened the present, his eyes bulged greedily. I won't tell you what was on the cover of Sirius' magazine you can use your imagination!
When I saw the headline of my newspaper it read:
Two muggleborn witches found murdered
My heart sank, sometimes in the tranquillity of Hogwarts it can be easy to forget the war going on outside. Disappearances and murders over the last few years. It's horrible and troubling to see. The muggleborns of our society must be terrified.
"You alright Moony?" James asked, after he'd finished his letter.
I showed him the headline and they all looked as troubled as I did. James gave Lily a troubled look for a few seconds before returning his attention to us. You could tell he was worried about Lily. Peter was a quarter of a way through his cake already.
Later on that day we were in Transfiguration and I'd forgotten my book. I was allowed to use an old one from the cupboard. There was an old map of the castle inside, nothing special about it. When we left I forgot to put it back. I know my memory seems to be lacking today. When I noticed this me and my friends were in the library, I picked it up and the map fell out.
James stood up and opened it.
"It's a map of the castle but it doesn't show the secret passage ways" James said after he's examined it. "It looks very old"
Peter and Sirius stood next him to look at the map as well.
"Where did you get this Remus?" James asked.
"It was in the book when I got it" I told him.
James seemed to be having a eureka moment. It was like this magnificent idea was forming in his brain.
"What is it James?" Sirius asked.
"The best idea we've ever had that's what!" James beamed, "I say we improve this map. We add the secret passageways and best part we add everyone. Every soul in Hogwarts we'll be able to see where they are"
"That's brilliant James!" I have to say that I was impressed, "Maybe we could stop other people from reading with a sort of password"
James nodded enthusiastically.
"Oh!" Sirius had had a thought, "It should insult anyone from trying to read it!"
"I agree" James definitely liked that idea, "It's getting a bit late today we should work on it tomorrow"
I have to say that I'm excited about it!
13th December 1975
It was a Saturday today and we quickly ate our breakfast and headed to the library to work on the map. With Sirius saying that this is first time he's come into the library willingly. It took a few hours poring through book when I found something.
"We could use the Homonculous charm to track people" I suggested.
"That's a good idea Remus" James wrote it down.
It took another few hours to work out the other spells. We decided to take a break before we did the charm. We went outside for a snowball fight. Me and Sirius against Peter and James. We creamed them btw! Poor James did have Peter on his team. We saw Regulus walking in the snow with his girlfriend.
Sirius threw a snowball at them. Regulus told him were to go.
The usual.
Then we decided to head back to enchant the map. We decided to go into Moaning Myrtle's toilet, since nobody goes in there.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" She yelled.
"Making history" James announced proudly.
She gave a loud scoff before disappearing down a sink.
"Ok let's do this" James said as he put the map on the floor.
We all stood in a wide circle around it with our wands pointed at the map.
"Homonculous!" we all shouted together.
The map glowed.
"Contumeliae!"
"Custodi"
The map glowed every time we said them.
It was time to test it!
James picked up the map and tapped his wand at it and said:
"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good"
As that was what we agreed should be the password. It said on it:
"Messers Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are proud to present: The Marauders Map"
I felt quite proud about we'd made. James opened the map and you could now see the secret entrances and corridors. However more importantly you could see everyone in the school (even Hugo). Some were stationary, some were moving around. It really was amazing! I could tell that James, Sirius and Peter were proud as well.
"We can see everyone! Sirius spoke in disbelief, "Why didn't we think of this before?"
"Thank you Remus" James thanked.
"For what?" I asked confused.
"For forgetting your Transfiguration book" we all laughed.
We spent the rest of the day celebrating by pigging out in the kitchens.
19th December 1975
We left for our Christmas holidays today. My friends and I decided to leave the map hidden in our dorm. Hugo is in box going to Peter's house for the holidays. I'd just finished patrolling the train's corridors. When I got back they were discussing James' latest match. I kind of zoned in and out. If you've heard it a million times, you can't stand to hear it again.
"Do you think Hugo's going to be alright in the cargo hold?" Peter wondered after James had finished.
"Yes" James said impatiently.
"Have you told your mum and stepdad about Hugo yet?" I wondered.
Peter looked really awkward…
"Well not exactly" he answered, "Let's just say its surprise"
Later on when we'd said goodbye. I was on my way to my parents and I spotted Peter telling his mum about Hugo (he had the cage in his hands). His mother did NOT look pleased!
