Chapter 58
They flew until around 3 in the afternoon when they finally landed in the Lestrange Manor.
"MUM!", Calypso shouted, hoping her mother would be home.
"Yes?" but it wasn't her mum that was home, it was her dad.
"Oh hello! I've missed you!" Calypso squealed hugging him.
"I've missed you too," he said nicely. "You're mothers inside arguing with Aunt Narcissa"
Calypso sighed and called a house elf over. "Can you take these bags up to my room- Draco and Theo's too"
The house-elf nodded and disappeared with a pop as her mum strode out. "What are you four doing here? You're supposed to be at school!"
Calypso stepped to the side to allow Theo to explain this entire fiasco he'd gotten them into.
"So Dumbledore's dead because-"
He basically just explained everything he'd said to Calypso and by the end, her mum was nearly jumping up and down in joy. "Wonderful! I shall call-"
Theo rolled his eyes. "Too late" and pointed into the distance where a black smoky figure was nearing.
Her mum crossed her arms but didn't say anything as the smoke changed into the shape of the Dark Lord. "Theodore, you better have a good reason to interrupt me from my…..very important….meeting"
"I do, sir. Albus Dumbledore is dead. His body's at Hogwarts, you can check for yourself-"
"No, legilimency will do"
"On me?"
"No, no" The Dark Lord scoffed. "On young Draco over here"
Great, sure Draco was good at Occulmency, but not to where he could create alternative memories like Theo could without raising suspicion.
Theo looked helplessly at Calypso as the Dark lord raised his wand at Draco. "Legilimens"
Red eyes stared into Draco's grey ones for about a minute before the Dark Lord laughed. "Theodore will be useful in the future...Draco on the other hand-"
"Please sir", interrupted Narcissa as she walked out. "Please."
"I'm afraid you're family has had enough chances," the Dark Lord said angrily.
"Please. I'll do anything. Please don't punish Draco", Narcissa begged.
Calypso discreetly shifted in front of Draco.
The Dark Lord looked at Narcissa thoughtfully. "I once had another mother trying to protect her child. Do you know what happened to her?"
"Please, please" Narcissa continued.
"Calypso! Tell Cissy what happened to her"
"S-she died" Calypso guessed.
The Dark Lord clapped his hands together slowly. "That's right. Lily Potter is dead!"
Ahhh, so that's who he was talking about.
"Please don't harm Draco" Narcissa pleaded again.
"Theodore, take her away" the Dark Lord ordered.
Theo clenched his jaw stiffly and pulled Narcissa and Calypso back into the house.
Calypso didn't look back until she'd successfully barricaded the door, and judging from the Dark Lord's expression, he didn't care that Theo'd take Calypso into the house with Narcissa.
Narcissa continued to plead through the glass window though, "Please, please, please have mercy"
The Dark Lord glared at her. "Fine, Theodore, replace Draco with her"
Theo sighed rather loudly, it was a miracle he didn't get in trouble for that. "Fine", and led Narcissa through the side door since my BRILLIANT barricade was apparently not worth the trouble to breakthrough. Rude.
But throughout the day, Narcissa was crucioed to the point where Calypso'd begged Theo to stop the Dark Lord about 20 times to no avail.
Calypso could barely bear to watch, and instead spent hours counting down the minutes until her animagus spell was due.
It was far past midnight when the Dark Lord got bored and apparated away, leaving Narcissa to die from the cold outside with strict orders that nobody helps her.
Tear-stricken, she was left alone in the dark after her mum and Draco left to notify Luciusw while Theo and her father went to clean up the mess outside.
The next morning, she cast a few glamour charms over herself to disguise her tears as the death eaters all gathered for a meeting.
"Any news on how they have reacted to the loss, Severus?"
Snape nodded. "Hogwarts has been closed down by the Ministry and the Order is in chaos. There will not be a better time to take over Britain. Many of the other European nations have withheld any help with suspicion of Potter's loyalties."
The Dark Lord laughed cruelly. "How so?"
"As I am told, Potter was the one who found Albus Dumbledore's body. Many students returning to class say they saw him run away from the body, rather than reporting it as he should have done."
"Well, Gryffindors never really think, do they?"
"No my lord" agreed Calypso's mum. "Now all of Europe believes Potter has killed Dumbledore because someone else found the body before he could get help?"
"It seems so," scoffed the Dark Lord. "And what of the boy's whereabouts?"
"The Order has taken to hide him in his muggle house again. They will break him out when they suspect the Ministry is going to fall through"
"Well, all the better! I still can not touch him though. I knew I should have used Potter's blood instead of Warrington's. It was an oversight" he added quietly. "Potter's half-muggle blood would have done just as well I am sure"
There were a few light mutterings through the crowd but nobody dared to argue about the worth of Cassius' pureblood. Come to think of it, Calypso hadn't ever questioned how the Dark Lord was able to regain a body, but now it was clear. He'd used Cassius' blood and some kind of old ritual.
Over the next few weeks, the meetings hardly varied and Calypso would've never bothered to attend if Snape didn't always bring excitable information from the Order.
The first time it was the Order's plans to protect the muggle prime minister. Then it was the Weasley and Potter's locations. This time it was when they were planning to move him.
There had to be a spy telling them of the Dark Lord's plans to take over the Ministry a week before Christmas break. Someone high up in his ranks or with good connections...no one but his top death eaters knew of his specific plans.
The only reason Calypso was allowed into such meeting was because of Theo and her parents. Heck, she would be a great spy if she wanted. The Dark Lord had no means of physically controlling her, she was clear of any dark marks, and not bad at Occulmency.
But who was she kidding? She wanted him to win...right?
When she glanced up again, Theo was staring at her intently.
Shoot, now he was going to think she was the spy, just great.
Sure enough after the meeting, he approached her. "I wouldn't turn yourself over if I were you. Not when we're winning at least"
"I'm not stupid" Calypso scoffed. "But what makes you think we're winning"
Theo sighed, "I don't know why you bother to attend if you're not going to pay attention. But the Order's a mess right now, old Dumbledore's death left a destabilization of leadership and nobody else really has the knowledge except Snape. But the Order hates Snape."
"That's stupid. It's not like Snape killed Dumbledore"
Theo smiled at her dryly. "No, I supposed I did, didn't I?"
Calypso laughed for the first time in days. "Anyways, you don't have to worry about me helping the Order, I promise I won't"
"It's not just that. Stay away from the meeting too next time."
"What? Why?"
"I don't want you to get the mark. If we lose, I want one of us to have a way out."
Calypso crossed her arms. "I like knowing what's going on though! I don't want to just be clueless while everything goes on around me. I'm completely capable of taking care of myself you know"
Theo shrugged. "I could just get you banned from the meetings too"
"You wouldn't"
He would.
"Fine...but you have to tell me what's going on"
"No guarantees"
"Theo!"
Theo rolled his eyes. "I'll let you know. Would you also like me to bring you breakfast everyday?"
"Yes actually"
"In you dreams" he scoffed, as another death eater called him away.
Since when was he so important within the ranks anyway?
A week later, Theo told her that they were all going on a thrilling nightime chase for Potter.
"You're to stay here" Theo added firmly when she asked if she was allowed.
"Pleeeeease. I haven't been out of the Lestrange and Malfoy Manors for a few months. I'm going to suffocate if you don't let me out"
Theo sighed. "I'll ask you mother. She's in charge of planning this chase-"
"No, no, no. Please don't ask her." Calypso begged. "She's just going to tell me to stay here and cook or something."
"I'm not going to compromise the careful position I've built up for myself just so you can chase Potter"
"Everyone else is chasing Potter" Calypso whined.
She was well aware that she sounded like a 3 year old at the moment but she didn't care.
"You do know you sound like a three year old right?"
"I'm aware" Calypso spat. "So can you please just let me go. Ask my dad instead or something"
"Your father isn't nearly as important in the armies."
"I know, but maybe he can convince my mum or something"
"No, even if they agree, I'm not letting you go"
"Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
Theo crossed his arms. "When was the last time you went outside even?"
Calypso thought back on it. She hadn't been outside since the day….since the day Narcissa had died.
"Actually, nevermind. You need to get out more" Theo said abruptly. "I'll ask your parents"
Calypso wasn't nearly as happy as she should have been but at 8 o'clock that night, they all flew out to hover above a muggle street for an hour.
Freezing.
