Ch. 1
Officer Jameson "Jamie" Reagan had been in the police force for a little over a year. It's 9:00 pm and he's on tour with his partner Sergeant Anthony Renzulli when they hear this over the radio.
"10-75F at 5-5 Wall Street." A voice came out through the radio
"Domestic Disturbance." Anthony said as he glanced at Jamie before speaking into his radio, "10-4. Responding."
A few minutes later, Anthony parks the car at the curb in front of the house. He and Jamie get out of the car.
"10-84." Jamie spoke into the walkie talkie. Now standing outside the house door, Jamie knocks on it.
"NYPD!" Anthony announces, "Open up!"
Soon a man answers the door, "Can I help you, Officers?"
"Yeah we're responding to a disturbance call to this address." Jamie replied, "Do you mind if we come in?"
The man shook his head, "No, not at all. It's just my wife and I here. We were just watching TV. Maybe the volume was up too high." Jamie and Anthony stepped into the house.
"Do you mind if one of us talks to your wife privately?" Anthony asked, "It's protocol to talk to the husband and wife separately." Jamie fell silent when he saw the man's wife. He just stared.
"Absolutely not." The man stated, "My wife is tired and she doesn't leave my side."
His wife's eyes met Jamie's. She knew that she knew him, but didn't say anything. She turned to her husband and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Honey, it's fine. I'm sure they'll be fast." She told her husband
He turned to his wife, "Are you sure, Lux?"
Lucy, or Lux gave a nod, "I'm sure. I'll be fine, Shane."
"Okay." Shane said before kissing his wife, "I love you."
"I know. I love you too." Lucy replied
Lucy walked over to Jamie and she led him into the kitchen, while Anthony talked to Shane in the living room. Once in the kitchen and out of Shane's view Lucy hugged Jamie, who hugged her back. It was only a brief hug though.
"I missed you." Lucy whispered to Jamie
"I missed you too, Sis." Jamie responded
Lucy smiled at him, "So you became a cop? Mom never wanted that."
Jamie nodded, "I know, but that's not what we are here to talk about." Then he asked, "Does Shane hurt you?"
"No. Never. He loves me." Lucy replied even though she was lying
"How'd you get those bruises then?" Jamie questioned trying to sound professional like a cop and not an overprotective older brother. He noticed that Lucy had some healing bruises and some fresher looking bruises on her face and arms.
"Boxing. It was an accident." Lucy explained, "We only had wraps on and not the gloves."
Jamie nodded, but he was unsure, "Are you sure?"
Lucy gave a nod, "Yes, absolutely." Then she whispered in his ear, "Don't tell anyone, especially dad that you found me."
"I won't." Jamie whispered back. Then he spoke, "Thank you for your time, ma'am."
Jamie joined his partner back in the living room and Lucy exited the kitchen after him as little footsteps were heard down the hallway.
"Sorry to take up your time, Sir." Anthony apologized at the same time a little voice spoke
"Daddy?" A little girl said as she stood behind Shane and Lucy, who was standing next to him.
Shane turned around and picked up his daughter, "Hey JoJo, did daddy wake you up? I'm sorry."
"Why are the police here, daddy?" Josie, or JoJo asked
"They were just making sure everything was okay here. They're leaving now." Shane told his daughter as Jamie and Anthony were walking out the door.
When Anthony and Jamie are back in their car, Jamie sighs and has a look of worry on his face.
Anthony turns to his partner, "Reagan, what's the matter?"
"That's my sister in there, Sarge. Shane's wife Lucy is my baby sister." Jamie half-shouted
Anthony furrowed his eyebrows, "I thought you only had one sister."
"Lucy ran away when she was sixteen." Jamie stated
Anthony nodded, "Okay. What do you want to do?"
Jamie shook his head, "There's nothing I can do. She made me promise not to tell anyone in my family that I saw her. Not even my dad."
"Alright then." Anthony agreed
Ch. 2
The next day at Lucy and Shane Doyle's house. Josie was in the kitchen eating breakfast with her mom and dad, who were drinking coffee while their daughter drank milk.
"Daddy, why were you and Mama fighting last night?" Josie asked
"We weren't fighting, JoJo." Shane replied, "We were just having a discussion."
Josie looked at her mom, who nodded, "Daddy's right, JJ. It was just a discussion."
"Okay Mama." Josie agreed before going back to eating.
Lucy looked at her husband nervously, "I think I might go into the city with Josie today."
"Why?" Shane questioned in a firm tone.
"I…uh need to do some shopping. Josie needs some new clothes." Lucy responded, "She's growing like a weed and has outgrown most of her clothes." Then she added, "Plus I might go to church."
Shane nodded, "Okay, but stay away from the police station and those cops from last night."
"Of course, Shane." Lucy replied with a nod
Shane smiled, stood up from the table, and then bent over to kiss his wife, "I have to head into work now. I love you, sweetheart."
"Love you too, babe." Lucy said after kissing her husband.
Shane kissed Josie on the cheek, "Have fun with Mama. Be good. I'll see you after work, JoJo. I love you, baby girl."
"I'm always good, Daddy." Josie stated, "And I love you too."
Shane took his dishes to the sink and then headed out the front door.
"Okay finish up your breakfast and then we'll go." Lucy told her daughter.
Josie nodded, "Okay Mama."
Meanwhile with Jamie, he took a lunch break from work and went to talk to his sister Erin at her office. He knocks on the door and then peaks his head into the doorway.
"Jamie. Hi." Erin said
Jamie smiled softly at his sister, "Hey, can I ask you a hypothetical question?"
"Of course." Erin replied
Jamie nodded, "Okay so let's say that hypothetically while on tour last night I saw someone who was like family to us who ran away many years ago. Someone who was like a younger sibling to us and that person made me promise not to tell anyone I saw them, but I believe their spouse is abusing them. What should I do?"
"Um…I think you should honor that promise and keep it." Erin told her brother, "You'd have to."
"I know, but can you keep a secret. I just need to tell one person. Promise not to ask any questions though. Like where this person is." Jamie spoke
Erin shook her head, "Well I can, but Jamie, telling me is a bad idea. Don't break your promise, but if I guess technically you haven't gone against your promise..." Then she asked, "Was it Lucy that you saw?"
Jamie gave a small nod, "She has a daughter, Erin."
"She had a girl." Erin stated simply
Jamie furrowed his eyebrows, "You knew? How?"
"The night she ran away, that morning she came to me and told me she was pregnant. She didn't want me to tell dad, and I told her that she should." Erin explained, but she thought to herself, 'It's my fault she ran away.'
"Oh. So you knew why she ran away all this time and you didn't tell anyone. Why not?" Jamie asked
Erin shrugged, "It wasn't my place. She ran because she didn't want to tell dad. Maybe she was embarrassed or scared."
Jamie nodded and breathed out, "Okay. Well I have to head back to work. I'll see you tonight."
Meanwhile with Lucy and Josie, they are at the church that Lucy grew up in. Lucy walks in with Josie and is approached by Father Phillip.
"You must be Lucy Reagan." Father Phillip said, "You look just like your sister Erin. You know, your father comes in once every week and we pray for you and your safety."
"That's very kind of you, Father. I am Lucy, but it's Doyle now." Lucy replied, "I'm married. This little girl is my daughter Josie."
Father Phillip smiled, "It's nice to meet you two. Now what brings you back to church, my child?"
"I am troubled, Father." Lucy informed, "And confused."
"What seems to be troubling you?" Father Phillip inquired
Lucy took a breath, "Well…I saw my brother Jamie last night. He responded to a disturbance call at my house that my neighbor made. I told him not to tell my dad that he saw me, but I don't know. I kind of want to see my dad, but I'm scared and embarrassed because I ran away six years ago. What should I do?"
"What if we pray about it." Father Phillip suggested, "You can let God steer you in the right direction."
Lucy gave a nod, "Okay Father. Thank you."
"Godspeed, my child." Father Phillip replied
After finishing up praying at the church with the Father, Lucy and Josie headed to the car so they could go to the mall.
"Mama, can I get a pretty dress?" Josie asked
"We'll see, baby. We need to get you clothes for school. It's going to be winter soon so you need pants, long sleeve shirts, and a couple jackets." Lucy explained
"Okay." Josie replied, "Can I get a Christmas dress, Mama?"
Lucy gave a small laugh, "Yes. You may, sweetheart."
"Yay! I want a green dress." Josie stated
Lucy gave a nod, "Okay that can be arranged, baby."
Ch. 3
It had been a week since Lucy had the encounter with her brother Jamie, and Shane had cooled off since then. Things were good between the two of them, but then she did something that set him off again. It was stupid. She never should have done it. Especially when she knew better.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Lucy?! Did you think that I wouldn't find out?!" Shane yelled as he stormed in through the front door.
Lucy flinched, "What...what did I do this time? Because whatever I did I'm sorry, Shane."
"Daddy!" Josie exclaimed as she ran to hug her father.
"Go upstairs to your room, JoJo. Daddy needs to talk to Mommy." Shane told his daughter, who then ran upstairs to her room.
Shane walked over to Lucy, "Tommy said he saw your car outside the police station today. The one where your brother works. What were you doing there?"
"He…he didn't see me. I didn't see him. I don't know why I went there. I'm sorry, Shane." Lucy apologized as she started to cry
Shane punched the wall, "Damnit, Lucy. Why do you have to do these things? Why do you have to make me so mad? Your life would be so easy and good if you just listened to me and did what I asked."
"I know, Shane. Josie and I are so lucky to have you. I'm sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me." Lucy told him
Shane shook his head as he slapped Lucy across the face. He grabbed her by the throat and she knew what would happen next. A punch to the stomach. She had to stop him.
"Wait. Sh…Shane, stop." Lucy gasped for breath as she wrapped an arm around her stomach, "I…I'm pregnant."
"What?" Shane stopped and stared at Lucy, "Are…are you sure?"
Lucy nodded, "I went to the doctor today. I'm seven weeks."
Shane smiled as he hugged Lucy, "Oh I'm going to be a father again." Then he pulled away and looked at his wife in the eyes, "I'm so sorry for hurting you. It will never happen again. I promise. I love you, Lux. Please don't leave me."
"I'll never leave you, Shane. Josie needs you. Our baby needs you." Lucy replied, "And I love you too."
Meanwhile at the Reagan house, Erin walked into the kitchen to talk to her father. She needed to talk to him about Lucy. She had to tell him the truth.
"Dad, can I talk to you for a minute?" Erin asked. She seemed a little nervous, because she was about to break a promise that she made to her little sister.
"What about?" Frank wondered as he turned to his daughter
Erin took a breath, "About Lucy. I know why she ran away."
Frank gave a nod, "Okay. Why did Luck run away?" Luck was his nickname for Lucy.
"She was pregnant, and she was scared to tell you." Erin said, "You remember that Nolan boy. Raphael. He's the father of Lucy's baby."
Frank nodded again, "Why didn't you tell me this seven years ago? And why are you telling me now?"
"I didn't think it was my place to tell you, but Jamie saw her a week ago while he was on tour. Just a coincidental incident." Erin explained. She didn't want her to know that Jamie thought Lucy was being abused by her husband. He didn't need to know that about his youngest. Erin shrugged, "I just thought you deserved to know that you have a granddaughter."
Frank gave one of his signature half-smiles, "Okay. Well I'm not sure what to do with this information, Erin. I don't know where she is and I'm assuming that you don't either. And she obviously doesn't want to be found or else she would have reached out."
"Yeah, you'd be correct." Erin agreed with a nod
"Then there's nothing we can do." Frank stated, "We just have to wait and see if she reaches out to us."
Erin sighed, "Yeah. I guess."
Ch. 4
A few weeks later, Lucy couldn't get Jamie and the rest of her family off her mind. It made her wonder if maybe she should reach out to them, but she couldn't. Shane would be so mad if she did. Little did she know, Jamie couldn't get Lucy and Josie off of his mind. Same with Frank and Erin. They couldn't stop thinking about Lucy and her little girl. Jamie wanted to help Lucy, while Frank and Erin just wanted to see Lucy again and meet her daughter.
"Mama." Josie called, "What are you thinking about?"
Lucy looked at her daughter with a smile as she stroked her daughter's long brown hair, "Nothing, sweetheart."
"Are you thinking about the baby?" Josie wondered. She was so excited to be a big sister.
"Yeah, I am. I have a doctor's appointment for the baby tomorrow." Lucy replied
Josie looks at her mother with her big blue eyes, "Do you want the baby to be a boy or a girl?"
"I just want the baby to be healthy." Lucy told her daughter
"I want a baby sister." Josie admitted
Lucy smiled, "Yeah. Well unfortunately I have no control over that."
"I'm going to ask God to give me a baby sister." Josie said
"I think that's a good idea." Lucy agreed, "What is it that God says about our prayers?"
Josie thought for a moment, "Oh I know. Ask and ye shall receive."
"Exactly. That was very good." Lucy praised
Josie smiled proudly, "Thank you, Mama." It was quiet for awhile, but then Josie spoke again, "Mama, how much longer until we can find out if the baby is a boy or a girl?"
"About eight more weeks, JJ." Lucy responded. She was twelve weeks pregnant, and you could find out the gender at twenty weeks. Sometimes if everything lined up, you could find out earlier.
"Ugh! That's a long time." Josie groaned
"It will go by faster than you know." Lucy added
Josie looked up at Lucy, "Mama, is Daddy a bad guy?"
"What? Why would you ask that, sweetheart?"
"Because the police were here that one night."
Lucy pulled her daughter in for a snuggle, "No, baby, no. Daddy's not a bad guy. Daddy loves us very much, but sometimes Mamas and Daddies have disagreements. We just got a little too loud and the neighbours got concerned and called the cops."
"Why?" Josie asked innocently, blinking her eyes as she rested her head against her mother's chest. Straining her neck to look up at her mother.
"Because there are bad men in the world who abuse their wives. The neighbors were just being cautious." Lucy explained
Shane pulled into the driveway at his house. He was home early from work. He decided to surprise his wife and daughter. They had no idea that he was coming until he walked into the front door.
"Daddy!" Josie exclaimed as she ran to greet her father.
Shane dropped his briefcase and picked up his daughter, "Hey JoJo."
Lucy looked at Shane shocked, "Honey, what are you doing here?"
"I thought I'd surprise my wife and daughter with a trip to DisneyWorld."
Josie's mouth dropped open, "We're going to DisneyWorld?!"
Shane nodded, "Yeah, we are. I've already packed for my little princess. Your suitcase is in the car. Why don't you go upstairs and help Mama pack."
"Okay Daddy." Josie agreed. She ran over to her mother and grabbed her hand, yanking on it to drag her up the stairs, "Come on, Mama. Let's go."
"Shane, when's our flight?" Lucy asked as she stood up.
"In five hours. We have to be at the airport in three hours."
Lucy sighed, "You can't just spring things like this on me."
Shane walked over to Lucy and gave her a quick peck, "Yeah I know. I just...I wanted to make you happy. I wanted to make Josie happy, and look how happy she is. I love you both. You know that."
"I know, but we should have talked about it."
"I'm sorry." Shane apologised
Lucy smiled and finally kissed him back, "I'm happy, Shay. I love you." Then she turned to her daughter, who was still pulling on her hand, "Okay baby, I'm coming. Let's go pack."
Ch. 5
A couple days later, it was the first day at one of the DisneyWorld parks - Hollywood Studios. Josie was so excited to be at DisneyWorld, running ahead of her parents. Lucy was feeling a little tired though and they had only just arrived.
Shane glanced over at his wife, "Lux, are you alright?"
Lucy nodded, "Yeah. Just a little tired."
"You gonna be okay?"
"Yeah. Josie's having fun. I don't want to ruin her day."
Shane hummed, "Well is there anything I can get you?"
Lucy laughed, "No, I can't drink coffee so…"
"Alright." He agreed, draping his arm around Lucy's shoulders briefly as he pulled her close and leaned in to kiss her temple, "Well, if you'd like to go back to the hotel just let me know. I can take you back and then Josie and I will come back to the park."
"Yeah. Okay." Lucy replied
Ch. 6
When Shane, Lucy and Josie returned home from Disneyworld, the family felt connected once more. Like how they were in the beginning when Shane and Lucy first got together, but Lucy still had this longing to see her family. For her grandfather to know he has another great-granddaughter. For her father to know he has another granddaughter. For her siblings to know that they have a niece. She wants to reconnect with her family and make amends. She wants Josie to meet them, but she also knows that Shane would never allow it. Sometimes she wonders what her life would be like if she had never run away. She would have her family, but she wouldn't have met Shane.
"Mama?" Josie called
"Yeah JJ?"
And the question that Josie asked was almost as if she read her mother's mind, or knew what her mother was thinking about.
"Daddy has grandma and grandpa. Where's your family?"
Lucy sighed as she sat on the floor beside Josie and pulled her daughter close. She moved the hair out of her daughter's face, tucking it behind the little girl's ear and then taking a deep breath.
"You know how I told you I was only seventeen when I gave birth to you?" Lucy started as Josie nodded, "Well...my family isn't around because I ran away from home after finding out I was pregnant with you. I was afraid that my family would be disappointed in me and now I'm too ashamed to go back, but I am happy with just you, your daddy, and your unborn sibling as my family."
Josie smiled, "Okay Mama."
Hope you enjoy. Comments are greatly appreciated.
