There was a space in front of Danny's house, even if the rest of the street was jammed with vehicles. His partner had offered to invite their friends over here. When they went in, they were already talking and clattering dishes. Sara had taken her canes with her so she didn't need his help. He saw her taking a glass of juice from Rachel and the two women talking briefly. Then they disappeared and after a moment Grace's mother came back alone. Worried he ran up to her. "What about Sara?"
"She just needs a short break. She lay down a little in Grace's room. I don't know how I would do if I were her, but I admire the way she is holding up. And you. My offer is still there. If you need anything, give us a call. "
"Thank you, Rachel. Sorry." His phone rang in his pocket. He read 'Liam' on the display. "Hey, did you get lost?"
"No, I'm being followed."
"What?!" Some heads turned around him.
"I am being followed. Shortly after I left the hotel, a black car hung up on me. I suspect the next act of an uninvited visit, I don't want to lead them to you."
"No, you shouldn't either. Where are you right now?" He pointed to his current and former team members and waved them outside with him.
"On the highway, I'm about to pass your house."
"Okay, stay on the highway, stay under the speed limit, we'll be with you in a few minutes. Just keep on following the road. I'll call you right back."
"Understood."
He briefly explained the situation to his people. "I don't think they want to kidnap him. But just that they try to get to us, especially Sara, through him ... "
"... is a no-go at all", Danny completed his sentence. "What equipment do you have in the car?"
"A little something. Lou, how about you? "
"It will be enough for the five of us. You once packed half the armory in Danny's trunk. Let's go. We know what the rental car looks like. Tani and Junior stay here and keep their eyes open as long as we're gone," he instructed the youngest in the group. "Are you calling Duke, Danny?"
"In the car." Steve tossed his car key to Chin, then ran to Danny's Camaro. Only when they left the small side street he turned on the blue lights and drive onto the highway at high speed. He dialed Liam's number.
"Where are you now?"
"We just drove past a church."
"Okay, listen to me. Are they pushing on you?"
"No. But they always stay with me within a maximum distance of two vehicles."
"Well. Keep going on the highway. You will soon cross a bridge, then you will see the ocean on the right. Immediately afterwards there is a traffic light, there is a parking lot on the right. Drive in there, stand in the middle. We are right behind you. Stay in the car, lock the doors until we get you."
"Understood."
In the background he heard a woman's voice scolding something incomprehensible.
"There they are," said Danny in the passenger seat.
"Okay, guys. We get in front of the SUV, you stay behind and we do that. They're not terrorists, but be careful anyway." He speeded up and pulled behind Liam's rental car. They pulled into the parking lot, jumped out of their vehicles, and surrounded the black car. "Get out! Hands where I can see them. Nice and slow! "He ordered. Two men in black suits got out of the car.
"Well, I've already seen the tall one today," Danny remarked next to him.
"Yes?"
"This is one of the two who stood in front of the church."
Chin and Lou had searched the two for weapons, and they found one at one of them. "Take a look," said Captain Grover pulling out a nine-mil. "I really hope you have a permission to carry this baby, my friend."
"And I want to see your ID," Steve ordered. "CSS. Carolina Special Services, Columbia, South Carolina," he read shortly thereafter. "And why am I not surprised now? Your client is then probably... "
"Mrs. Bridget Anderson."
"Sure. I'll tell you something now: This is Hawaii, my island. And this is about my family. Which means, Carolina Special Service has no authority or place here. You both will get into the car now, turn around, drive to your hotel and stay there. Alternatively, you can leave the island on the next plane, which I personally would prefer. But if you come under my eyes again, or if I spot you anywhere close to my family, I'll arrest you for stalking. Go away. Now."
"Mrs. Anderson ... ", began the driver.
"Bad idea," Danny interrupted and pushed him to his vehicle. "Just shut up, get in and drive away. When my partner is in this mood, I guarantee for nothing. Get lost. Immediately. As far as you can."
The man glanced at him, then nodded and got in. They waited for the SUV to drive away, then Steve went to Liam's rental car and knocked on the driver's window. When he looked into the car, he realized that Liam wasn't alone. "You can get out. Everything OK?"
Liam opened the door and got out. "Yes, we are fine. This woman must really be completely crazy."
"I have the same impression. Who is that?" He pointed to the passenger door, where a gray-haired, dark-skinned woman was getting out. For a moment the face looked familiar.
"A surprise for Sara. She actually wanted to go to church, but when she saw Mrs. Anderson, she immediately turned and drove back to the hotel. She didn't get a place on our plane, she flew overnight." The two men circled the car, Danny followed them. "May I introduce Steve McGarrett, Danny Williams. Lugenia Grimes."
From the front the woman looked much older, but in her wrinkled face there were bright, alert eyes that seemed to pierce him. Now he reminded how he knew the face, Sara had shown him pictures of her. Mrs. Grimes had run the kitchen in her childhood home until her father died.
