Chapter 66; life of a king
Sonic was looking at the sea from the balcony of his son Miles' beach home holding his wife Amy's hand. The sun was about to set.
"It is truly spectacular that the simplest things are the best isn't it Ames?" he asked her.
"Yeah. Our life has become so different ever since we became grandparents and we retired from dueling. I mean I love it and I will defend my place on the world ranking but dueling every time a tournament is held… I grew tired of it."
"Same here. I love it but I'm too old to do it all day long. Our kids will not allow anyone to get a chance to challenge us of course. But even if they are defeated we will pick up our duel discs and fight again." Sonic said remembering the glory days in a nostalgic yet satisfied look.
"Please don't say fight. Duel. Just duel. We've fought enough in our lives already. You the most of us all."
"That I cannot deny." Sonic said memories of all his battles coming to mind as well.
He was caught by surprise.
"BOO!" a small scream was heard right next to his ear."
"AAAH" Sonic shouted in terror "I can't believe you got me" he said laughing.
"Told you I would get you grandpa." Sonic Jr said with a proud smile.
"You little naughty boy" Amy said hugging her grandson "aren't you supposed to be sleeping? You know your dad wants us all to be in perfect shape for the feast tomorrow.
"Oh come on it's so early."
"It is but your father is the guest of honor. You need to be looking stunning."
"Can you at least come tell me a story grandpa?" Sonic Jr asked.
Sonic was caught by surprise. His grandson usually preferred either his mother or grandmother for bedtime stories. But he smiled.
"Sure. Let's go."
Sonic Jr sprinted to his bed and was ready when Sonic entered the bedroom.
"So what story do you want to hear?"
"The story of the giant dragon tattoo on your back." Sonic Jr said.
Sonic was once again in surprise. He knew his grandson would see the tattoo on the beach during swimming but didn't expect he would ask about it.
"What do you want to know about it?"
"Mommy once told me a story about you and granny being heroes and gods. And the other day when I was looking through your stuff for the sky ruler dragon card when I asked you if you could see it, I found a letter from one Silver the Hedgehog congratulating you on your victory in that important duel. He mentioned something about a lunar dragon."
Sonic sighed in sadness. Memories of his last adventure flooded his mind once again. He saw with the eyes of his imagination armies of duelists, he friends dropping dead right next to him, Amy dying in his arms.
"It is a very, very long story Sonic Jr. But yes. Once upon a time me your grandma Amy, your grandparents Jet and Wave and you remember my friends Tails and Knuckles?"
"Yeah"
"We 6 had all the power in the world. The tattoo on my back resembled a long gone deity. The very lunar dragon you read about. When we were young its power was split between us 6 and we fought various bad people who threatened the world one way or another. Up until the moment when you were conceived by your parents. The lunar dragon died some days later. Its life energy was used to save my life and the tattoos we had in our hands then faded away."
"But if the dragon died… what is that tattoo?"
"I'll tell you all about it little one. It all started 6 years ago when you were 2 years old" Sonic said as the memories of that adventure started flooding his mind.
6 YEARS AGO
Sonic was riding his duel runner racing Tails and Knuckles.
"You gotta go faster than that to catch me you two." Sonic teased them as he accelerated.
"Don't think you won yet!" Tails said as he accelerated as well.
"I'm not out of it either!" Knuckles said chasing after his friends.
They positioned their runners on opposite sides of Sonic's. They saw straight ahead the crooked tree that they had chosen as their finish line.
"Come on!" all 3 of them thought.
However there was no victor in the end. As miraculous as it sounded all 3 of them passed by the tree at the same time.
"Damn, how did we achieve this?" Tails said surprised.
"3 victors in the same race has never happened" Knuckles said laughing.
"Always a first time for everything." Sonic said "Anyway thanks for the race guys but the family is calling."
"Oh right give this to Miles and Marianna" Tails said giving Sonic a package which he took out of the small space under the duel runner's seat.
"It's from both of us for Sonic Jr. Since we're leaving the city tonight for our journeys and all."
"Are you sure you guys can't stay for one more night? You'd save me a whole lot of niggling from Amy."
"Sorry Sonic but if we don't leave tonight I will have to sleep on the couch. Cosmo was dead serious about this" Tails said with a little guilt "Plus my lovely mother-in-law is waiting for us and her niggling is much worse than Amy's".
"Same here. The kids are waiting like crazy to meet their cousins. Also Rouge promised me something tonight if you get the point."
"Traitor" Sonic and Tails said laughing.
"After a few more jokes, a goodbye and a heartfelt wish for good luck with Amy, Sonic left to meet his family. However while he was passing outside the duel palace he heard the cries of the crowd and didn't resist the urge. He entered from a staff door and headed for the arena.
Once he arrived he witnessed 2 of the newest monsters in the game Eldlich the golden lord and adamancipator risen raptite duking it out.
"Golden lord! Destroy this bird and bring me victory!" Roy Armstrong, the pro duelist controlling eldlich declared.
Eldlich destroyed raptite earning Roy the win. However before he could be addressed as the winner a little girl noticed Sonic observing the duel.
"Mommy look! The king is here!"
One by one the fans noticed Sonic and started cheering for him and asking for him to duel. A woman let out a huge scream.
"WE WANNA SEE THE KING DUEL!"
And then everyone started yelling in perfect sync the word duel over and over again. Sonic smiled because of that and raised his hands so the crowd could stop. There was absolute silence.
"Well.. I've been noticed. And the people have spoken. I witnessed only the end of the duel but I must admit I'm impressed. Adamancipator has risen to be a top ranking deck in only 2 days ever since its release and you defeated it with a rising deck like eldlich. You intrigued me enough so I challenge you to a duel! Do you accept Roy Armstrong?!"
"Of course I will king! But you will need this!" he said snapping his fingers.
Someone from the crowd threw Sonic a duel disc. Deciding to flex a little bit he jumped towards the spinning disc and punched the air with his left hand managing to fit the duel disc in his hand perfectly and making a superhero-style landing, activating the duel disc at the same time and putting his deck on it leaving Roy greatly impressed.
"DUEL!" they both yelled.
"As the challenged one I will go first. I activate the spell card quick launch. I special summon rokket tracer from my deck. Next I set the link markers with tracer! Circuit combine! Link summon! Appear! Striker dragon! I use its effect to add the field spell boot sector launch from my deck to my hand. Next I activate the field spell and use the effect of my dragon. By blowing it up I can add a rokket from my grave to my hand. I select tracer. Now with my field spell I can summon rokket tracer in defense mode. I activate his effect to destroy my field spell and summon rokket recharger from my deck! Now I tune these 2 together! When the 2 dragon bullets combine the door to chaos will open! Synchro summon! Rise! Chaos ruler the chaotic magical dragon! Now for its effect! I can excavate the top 5 cards of my deck and add one of them to my hand…"
"And the rest stay in the graveyard. a weaker version of painful choice built in a monster" Sonic said "but I don't think so. I discard ash blossom and joyous spring to negate this effect."
"Fine there is still more to do. All this was made from one card. I special summon magician's souls by sending apprentice illusion magician from my deck to my hand. Next with its effect I send 2 traps from my deck to my hand to draw 2 new ones. But there is more. I set the link markers with my 2 monsters circuit combine! Link summon! Come forth! Predaplant verte anaconda! I set 2 cards and use anaconda's effect. By paying 2000 LP (Roy LP 6000) andsending red eyes fusion to my graveyard from my deck I can use its effect! I fuse dark magician and red eyes black dragon from my deck! The magician who wields darkness and the dragon born in the flames of hell. Merge and give birth to the unholy spring of death and destruction! Rise! Red eyes dark dragoon!"
Upon the summoning of dragoon, the card that had split the duel monsters community apart people had different reactions. Some of them almost started fighting until Sonic raised his hand signaling them to focus on the duel.
"Now I set 2 cards face down and use the effects of my 2 traps in the graveyard. by banishing them I can set 1 eldlixir trap and one golden land card from my deck. I choose eldlixir of the scarlet sanguine and conquistador of the golden land. I end my turn."
"Nice opening. Got rid of one of my cards and went plus 2. Amusing. Let's begin! Before I draw I declare that I will win this turn by destroying dragoon in battle. That will be the one and only attack I will make. And now… here I go! I draw!" Sonic did so under the cheering of the crowd.
But at that very moment his phone started ringing. His expression went from confident to scared for his life.
"Oh I'm dead" he thought "Mind if I answer this?" he asked Roy.
"Go ahead" he said calmly.
"Hel…" Sonic tried to greet but was immediately answered with a scream.
"WHY ARE YOU DUELING WHEN WE ARE WAITING?"
"I'm sorry baby I got carried away" Sonic said slowly so as to not be heard "I will be done momentarily just hang on a little longer."
"You're lucky I know you mean it. You were one step away from sleeping on the couch. Now win it" Amy said and hang up. Miles and Marianna who was holding their 2 year old son were looking at her in utter surprise.
"Mom chill. He just wanted to see and got dragged into it."
"I know young man but family is above all. Our sweet pea is turning 2 today" she said taking baby Sonic Jr to her hug and throwing him in the air before catching him again much to the baby's joy .
Sonic took a second to process the fact that Amy was bold enough to call him during a duel (unofficial but still a duel) and niggle at him but then his heart started beating fast as he just loved her boldness. He turned back to Roy.
"I special summon blackwing gofu the vague shadow. Upon summoning I use its effect!"
"I know that effect. I wouldn't normally use this right now but you are above normal! Dragoon! I discard eldlich the golden lord to have you negate that effect and vanquish that monster!"
Dragoon destroyed gofu and rose even stronger to a grand total of 4000 points.
"Good. You just opened my road to victory! I activate blackwing onslaught!"
"Black what?!"
"Onslaught! And don't think about using any effects on it. Its activation and effect can't be negated! By discarding 2 cards from my hand as I now hold 4 so half of them and paying half my LP (Sonic LP 4000) I can summon 5 blackwings from my deck! Soar! Oroshi the squal, mistral the silver shield, gale the whirlwind, bora the spear and sirroco the dawn!"
"5 of them?" Roy said in shock.
"Next I activate the effect of the 2 discarded blackwings! Delta the morning breeze and Icarus the fallen. Delta allows me to add a new winged beast from my deck to my hand as long as it is weaker or equally as powerful as my weakest monster on the board. My weakest is mistral the silver shield. Therefore I add d.d crow to my hand. Net with Aeolus effect I can add a monster from my graveyard to my hand but I can't summon it. I select my ash blossom. Next I use blackwing feathers."
"Oh no you don't. you already got too much of an advantage. I use my own ash blossom to negate blackwing feathers."
"Good. Ash is out of the way. Now my true plan can begin!"
"What?!"
"I set the link markers with oroshi and mistral! Circuit combine! Link summon! Appear link 2 raidraptor wise strix! With its effect I summon blackwing zephyros the elite from my deck to my hand! Now I overlay my bora and zephyros!"
"An xyz summon in a blackwing deck?!"
"Yes! Meet my newest monster! Blackwing Aeolus the wind controller!"
"I don't know what this does but I don't plan to find out! I activate 2 traps! Chain link 1 conquistador of the golden land and chain link 2 eldlixir of the scarlet sanguine!"
"I know this strategy. You will summon golden lord first then conquistador will be summoned to destroy my monster! But I think not! by discarding ash blossom I negate sanguine!"
"Then I chain the quick play spell eldlixir of the black awakening! It will…"
"Revive the golden lord in the graveyard. but I already planned ahead for this too. I discard d.d. crow to banish the golden lord from the graveyard."
"Oh no! You thought this far ahead?!"
"I don't hold the title of king for no reason! Now to win. By detaching one overlay unit from my monster I can summon a blackwing from my deck with its effect negated or add it to my hand. I select to add blackwing blizzard the far north! Now I detatch another one to summon this time blackwing shura the blue flame from my deck. Now I set the link markers with shura and wise strix! Circuit combine! Link summon! Soar! Ascended blackwing shura the eternal flame! Next I tune gale with sirrcoco! Darkened squals become the wings that soar from resolved hope! Synchro summon! Soar black-winged dragon!"
Black-winged appeared under the cheer of the crowd. All cameras turned to it.
"Now the real fun can begin! I summon blizzard the far north! With its effect I resurrect bora the spear! Next I activate the effect of zephyros the elite in the graveyard. I return bora to my hand, take 400 points of damage and then summon it. Next I tune blizzard with zephyros! Spread your jet black wings and open the path to a new evolution! Synchro summon! Appear! Blackwing evolution booster!"
"Is it coming?!" Roy said in fear.
"Not just yet. I have a lot of effects that activate. Since I special summoned a blackwing on its link shura the eternal flame summons 2 more of them. Also I can draw 1 card due to evolution booster. I draw 1 card and summon blackwing breeze the zephyr and kris the crack of dawn! Now it is time. I tune evolution booster with black winged dragon! Spread your royal jet black wings and deliver the justice of the sky to our enemies! Black synchro! Soar to power! Black feather sky ruler dragon!" Sonic screamed as his dragon appeared. The crowd went wild.
"Time for the last dance. I special summon shura due to controlling a blackwing monster and tune it with blackwing breeze the zephyr! Synchro summon! Appear blackwing chidori the rain sprinkling! Both chidori and sky ruler dragon share the same ability of gaining 300 for every blackwing in the graveyard. They both gain a total of 2700 attack! And now watch this strategy! I activate the spell card ancient chant".
"No! Not that!"
"I add to my hand the winged dragon of ra! Next I banish ancient chant from the graveyard so I can tribute summon again. I sacrifice chidori the rain sprinkling, sky ruler dragon and Aeolus the wind controller! Descend to this dueling field! WINGED DRAGON OF RA!"
Ra skydived and landed behind Sonic with a giant thud.
"Thanks to the ancient chant spell Ra gains the attack points of the monsters I tribute. Plus his effect to pay all my life points except 100 can also be used! He has a grand total of 17000 attack power staring down on you! it's over! You have no cards in hand and I can safely assume that your remaining set card is the counter trap golden land forever which can't be used without an eldlich monster out. So it's game over!"
"Amazing. You actually did what you said you would. And against a deck as powerful as eldlich."
"Ra! End this duel! God blaze cannon!"
Roy looked on in admiration as Ra blasted away dragoon and won Sonic the duel. Sonic raised his fist in triumph under the wild cheering of the ground.
"Nice duel Roy. But I got to go family's calling. I'm very happy to see you all and I hope you enjoyed my duel goodbye!" he said to his fans as he left the arena and returned to his duel runner riding it and heading towards the rendezvous point, his house, with Amy and his son's family.
When he arrived outside his house of course the niggling began.
"Dueling on family day?"
"Come on Ames I couldn't resist it."
"You promised no dueling today."
"I know I know but I heard the crowd and I wanted to see the match. I arrived there at the moment of the last attack."
"And you were spotted. You're really lucky that when you are serious you win in one turn."
"Nice win dad" Miles said "it was just a mind-blowing strategy to add a 2 card winged dragon of Ra engine into your deck."
"Yeah the god card support is neat. The god cards might no longer be one of a kind cards but they still are very powerful" Marianna said.
"Anyway family let's go inside. Sonic Jr's cake is waiting him to be eaten." Sonic said.
They all walked in and after half an hour Jet and Wave also came along. Lastly Sonic Jr's aunts Aurora and Evelyn also arrived. The party was pretty fun and the cake was delicious. Once they had eaten and Sonic Jr was playing with his parents and aunts, Sonic, Amy, Jet and Wave were discussing random stuff.
"Cosmo said she will have Tails sleep on the couch?" Wave said laughing hysterically.
"Did you give her that idea love?" Sonic asked Amy.
"Well I was just joking about it once. But I guess she made use of it" Amy answered smiling.
"Damn guys check this out." Jet said showing them an article he was reading.
The other 3 looked. It was about a generator used by the company Aurora and Evelyn were working at. it was said to run on a mysterious energy. The last few days it was emitting a weird form of this energy while running. Sonic was hit by a déjà vu feeling while reading it.
"Call me crazy guys… but for a moment I thought this energy was the same we used when we were still singed ones."
"You felt like this too?" Wave asked him.
"It can't be that kind of energy guys. The lunar dragon is dead."
"Yeah that's a fair point. I guess those times can't easily be forgotten can they?" Sonic thought out loud.
After that conversation the group split and went to their respective houses. Before leaving Sonic asked his daughters about the generator and they told him and Amy that the company had detected this energy in the air all around the city ever since the death of the lunar dragon. Furthermore the weird energy spikes that occurred were occurring every week at the day of death of the lunar dragon.
"Maybe I need to go and have a look at this generator." Sonic told Amy when they were home.
"What for?"
"There is something off about it. Plus if that can help our daughters I'll gladly do it."
"Sonic just don't ok please. I just wanna forget all the bad things we went through during that time. Plus…."
"Plus?"
"If you go you will sleep on the doormat. You've been warned."
Sonic burst out laughing.
"Don't tell Cosmo that. Poor Tails doesn't deserve this."
They arrived at their house soon after and went immediately to sleep after watching a little TV. However during that night unbestknown to them the reactor the generator started causing an energy spike bigger than the previous ones. Close to dawn while the staff were still trying to contain the spike without shutting it down a giant blue light appeared before them.
"A giant blue light grandpa?" Sonic junior asked him intrigued.
"Not exactly a light. Be patient my boy. The adventure is just beginning"
