"Yo, grandpa Oberon…"
Oberon opened his eyes, looking up at the entrance at his study and laying eyes on the two very familiar faces. Dusk and Dawn both smiled as they leaned on each side of the doorway. "Children. What's brought you to my study?" he asked.
The twins both stepped inside, and then Dusk suddenly held up a yellow flag from behind his back. "We want to play capture the flag."
Oberon raised an eyebrow. That silly contest they always had with their mother and uncle? They claimed it was training of some sort, but it looked like little more than a children's game. Not that he could fault them for enjoying it. They were indeed children after all. But to expect him to play.
"I have no desire to join in such childish activities. Perhaps you would be better off asking Cressida. Or one of your other cousins." They always enjoyed indulging their younger cousins' whims. Certainly more so than he cared to.
The twins both frowned. "C'mon gramps, we beat cousin Cressida already. We're trying to work our way up," Dawn said.
"Yeah. First Cressida, then Umbriel, then uncle Astro, and then Mom." Dusk explained.
Their cousin Umbriel and uncle Astro were hard to beat, and they hadn't managed to their snatch a flag from either yet. But they had come close a few times. Their mom tho? It was impossible. Nia always seemed one step ahead of them. Like she was built for this game.
Oberon narrowed his eyes. "And I am simply to serve as practice for your cousin and uncle, am I?" he asked. The twins both nodded, knowing full well that he probably didn't like being used as a warm up. But that was the idea. Their great-grandfather was super prideful. Even if he wasn't the king anymore, he still saw himself second to none. The closest he had were equals in Umbriel and Nia. "As I stated, I have no interest in such childish games."
The both pouted, and looked like they were going to say something, but then another voice spoke out. "Now children, perhaps it's best if you don't pester your grandfather. He has grown far too tired and weary to engage in such games," Titania said from the doorway. The twins both looked back at their great-grandmother, and Obron frowned.
"Weary you say…?" Oberon asked, clearly insulted by the notion.
The twins caught on immediately, both smirking as they turned to leave. "Yeah, I guess you're right grand-gran. He is really old. Probably rusty," Dawn said.
"Yeah, he probably wouldn't make good practice anyway. We should go find Cressida. We'd be better off with her," Dusk said.
Before they even got to the door, they heard a snap, and suddenly they were all outside. The twins smirked and then turned back towards Oberon, who was now standing and had an irritated look on his face. "I believe that you all have forgotten just who stood at the top of Avalon for so many years. Perhaps you need a reminder," he said.
The twins both looked excited, and Titania looked amused. They made a mental note to thank their great-grandmother later. With another snap of his fingers, the flag vanished and then reappeared around Oberon's waist. "Come now children. Show me what ones so young and inexperienced are capable of."
Dusk and Dawn didn't need to be told twice. They both rushed at Oberon at a blinding speed, but the former king didn't even budge. Dawn reached him first, going straight for the flag. Oberon casually moved beyond his reach, only to have Dusk come from behind and try to snatch it.
Oberon grunted and then jumped straight into the air. He watched as the twins headed right towards one another, looking like they were going to crash. Instead they both smirked. Dawn lifted his hands up, and Dusk leapt up and then kicked off of both of his brother's palms. He shot up towards Oberon who, while looking impressed, once again casually moved out his way.
Dusk stopped himself in mid air, hovering for a moment before pointing at Oberon. "Gramps, since we're so much weaker, we don't have to hold back, right?" he asked.
Oberon smirked. "You would stand no chance if you held back…"
"Just wanted to make sure!" Dawn said, flying up from above. He dived down and reached for the flag, but Oberon moved to the side and grabbed his wrist. He casually tossed Dawn to the side, but the blonde raised his hand up as he went flying back. Oberon expected him to launch a spell, but instead a portal opened up from below.
Dusk came whizzing out of the portal, but rather than reaching for the flag, he threw a kick at Oberon. The former king raised his arm and easily blocked it. "You are bold to attack me little one." Dusk may have inherited divine genes from Nia, but his magic was nothing impressive. He'd gotten most of his abilities from his father.
"Who said I'm attacking!" Dusk said, holding one of his hands out. His eyes began to glow, and with a burst of psychic energy he sent Oberon flying back. "Get it now!"
Oberon looked over her shoulder and saw he was being pushed towards Dawn, who was speeding towards him. Oberon twisted his body, moving over Dawn and grabbing him by the back of his shirt. He yanked him back, then flung him downwards. Dusk teleported beneath his brother, stopping him with his telekinesis and then flinging him back at Oberon.
Oberon braced himself, but then Dusk teleported once again, appearing behind him. He had to move quickly to avoid him, and then Dawn right after. The twins kept going after him, teleporting, creating portals, and swapping places to try and throw Oberon off. Despite this, he seemed to be just fine keeping up with the two.
Titania watched as her husband and great-grandsons continued their little game. It had been rather easy to goad Oberon into playing with them. While she was glad he had seen wisdom in passing his throne to a newer, younger generation, she had been growing worried that he was spending too much time holed up in his study.
There were far too many people in the castle now for him not to have a reason to stretch his legs, when she had seen the twins headed towards him with their flag, she saw her opportunity to get him up and about. And judging by the amused smirk on his face, he was enjoying himself.
Oberon let out a chuckle as he waved his finger, conjuring up a burst of wind that sent both the boys sliding away from him. "Do you see now little ones? Whether it be a game or a battle, there is no greater challenge than I," he said.
"Man, you are pretty good gramps…" Dawn said, crouching down.
"But we still think we can get you!" Dusk shouted.
The twins both ran in from opposite directions. Dawn swung his arm up, causing a cloud of dust to kick into the air. Oberon waved his hand, sending it away, and right as it cleared Dawn made a portal above him. Oberon looked up and readied himself for his brother to leap out of it, but then…
"Make you look!"
Dusk had teleported behind him, and his arm shot out for the flag around Oberon's waist. Oberon's eyes then widened, and he reacted on pure reflex. He swung his arm, knocking Dusk back and sending him flying into a nearby tree. The boy grunted as he hit the ground, his body still.
"Dusk…" his brother asked worriedly. He didn't respond, or even move. "Dusk, are you okay? Gramps, I think you hurt him."
Oberon frowned. "Nonsense." True he had reacted on reflex, but he had still managed to pull his power back. Such a light strike couldn't have injured him in any meaningful way. He was of his blood after all… then again, his genes weren't as prominent as they were in his brother.
He hummed. If he really was injured, his granddaughter would hardly be pleased. He began to make his way over to check on the boy, ready to heal whatever injury he might have had. He knelt down to turn him over, but then suddenly Dusk's hands shot up and grabbed his wrist. His eyes were glowing, and Oberon felt an immense pressure pressing down on his whole body.
"Dawn, now!" Dusk yelled, using every once of psychic power he had to try and pin their great-grandfather down.
Dawn had already been halfway there before his brother had called out, using a mix of fire and wind magic from his feet to jet himself forward. He reached out, managing to get a hand on the flag, but then Oberon's own eyes began to glow.
Everything seemed to happen in a blew for the boys. Oberon stood and began spinning, pulling the flag just out Dawn's fingers. Dusk had lost his grip on his wrist, but Oberon had grabbed on of his. And after falling face first, Dawn felt someone grabbing onto his ankle. The twins yelled out as Oberon continued spinning, causing a twister to kick up in the area.
Titania just watched as he spun around for almost a minute, then began to slow down. He came to a stop, then held up both Dusk and Dawn, who both groaned and looked dizzy. "Very clever children. But not clever enough." He would admit that for a moment, he had been fooled. Without speaking a word, that boys had put on a rouse the Puck himself would be proud of.
But he hadn't grown so rusty as to fall for such a trap. "I may have underestimated you, but know that such ploys will not work on me a second time. If you truly intend to best me, you will have to train and try far harder," he said. Dusk and Dawn both finally seemed to collect their senses, and then Oberon let go and allowed them to jump back.
"Just you wait, we're not done yet gramps! We're gonna beat you!" Dawn said smiling.
"Yeah! We got way more tricks up our sleeves!" Dusk said excitedly.
Oberon hummed and rubbed his chin. "Do you now. I am intrigued. Show me."
Titania watched as the boys both charged back at him, and the game went on. "Huh, so that's where they were." Titania turned her head and saw Nia approaching. "Hey grandma. I was just looking for the boys. It's almost time for dinner… is that grandpa Oberon?" she asked, surprised. "And is he smiling?"
It was rare to see him out and about these days. She thought it had been Umbriel who was playing with the boys when she first sensed them. "Spare them a few more minutes dear. You have no idea how dreadfully difficult it is to trick him out of his study these days," she said.
Nia laughed. "Alright. I guess I can wait a bit longer. Looks like the kids might have a new playmate. How do you think he's going to handle all four of them?" she asked.
Titania hummed, and then smiled. "Between all of your children? That may overwhelm even him…"
A/N: One-shot for Laylaylamode! The twins playing around with grandpa Oberon! If it wasn't for the kids he'd probably be sitting around just being a grump all day. Good think Titania knows how to get at his ego lol.
