The kids had reacted with mixed feelings. Sophie had chimed in that she didn't want to leave Brian which was understandable. But Julia and Amanda were eager for a fresh start in a new town. Especially like Jane they were looking forward to moving closer to their grandma who spoiled them over the holidays to no mercy.
Will was too young to have an opinion, but he giggled along as excitement slowly took over the Rizzoli-Isles family.
John had been asked for the legal side of fostering Amanda when moving to another state. His reply had come as quick and unproblematic as usual when he answered that he could ship that. The only thing that stung Jane a little was the fact that she would have to move 6 weeks prior than the rest of her family to start her job.
She would still be sergeant, which had been one of her conditions. While she was looking forward to going back because of her mother who was noticeable getting older she wondered what Mauras motives were.
"You know that they mean a lot of good planning." Jane whined one evening when they were peacefully sitting in front of the TV.
"I know, and we will be well prepared." Maura chuckled and took out a list with a plan. Jane wasn't surprised and read over it quickly with a raised eyebrow. "First load goes out in three weeks?" she asked, and Maura nodded.
"Yeah. We'll hire a company. The girls have Monday and Tuesday off from school that week. So, they can help. But I want you to have all your stuff there before you start working. Are you excited?"
Jane gave her a confused look. "Yeah. Kind off. I'm happy to see some of the old faces and curious about the new ones." She stated, glad that Frankie would start the same time.
"You will see, the six weeks will pass quickly." Maura grabbed her hand, knowing that Jane was a bit worried about missing her family and leaving Maura behind with three teenagers and a toddler.
"We are going to be fine. We lived through worse." Maura said reassuringly and Jane agreed. They had indeed. And they had the weekends. But Jane knew how the job was and that Cavanaugh probably had promised something he couldn't fulfill.
But moving back to Boston also meant seeing her favorite team play more often. She had found more ups than downs when weighting the question. But the ups had outweighed the downs at the end.
She watched how her mother padded into the living room asking if they had any wishes for dinner. Both women shook their head in no. Holiday in Boston meant being pampered all the time and Jane grinned silently to herself when Angela huffed. "Come on, you must have a wish!" Angela pouted, trying to make her guest happy.
"Well, if you ask, I would like to have a Lasagna Granny." Sophie stated while padding into the room.
"See, at least someone is reasonable." Angela huffed again before disappearing.
"What is it baby?" Jane asked her daughter who slumped into one of the seats by the chimney.
"I'm bored. Julia and Amanda are spending a lot of time together and I have no friends here."
Jane knew that the real reason for this pouting was that she would have to leave Brian behind and it hurt her.
"I'm sorry baby. Maybe we should go to the cinema this afternoon?"
"No, I just want to die." Sophie wined overdramatically and the corners of her mouth tugged.
"We can invite Brian as often as he can come." Maura chimed in but Sophie shrugged.
"We broke up a month ago or so. I found out that he had another girlfriend." This information was totally new to her parents who were shocked.
"Why didn't you tell us?" the blonde asked.
"Because I hoped that…" Sophie took a deep breath and fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. "Never mind." She finished. "I'm glad we are moving here. So I don't have to see him anymore." She pouted.
"What would you like to do?" Maura asked with a smile.
"Can we talk about the decoration of my room?" Sophies face lit up.
"Sure. What's wrong with the current decoration?" Jane teased her, seeing how boring it must be to live in one of the guestrooms. Maura had proved a lot of taste when buying the furniture for the house. But of course, a teenager had a different taste. Hence, Jane wasn't surprised at the request and the huff which she earned for her comment.
"What's wrong? Ma! Seriously?" Jane laughed gently and pulled her daughter into her lap to tickle her. "Maaaaaa!" Sophie wined and laughed at the same time.
"Okay. I'm all serious now." Jane stopped after a minute. "Talk to us. What do you want?"
Sophie, who was still breathless from the attack glanced at them and Jane hoped that she wouldn't ask for something impossible.
"Well, uh… normal stuff. A modern bed, maybe another color for the walls than beige because beige is boring." She stopped when Maura hitched a breath. "No, I mean its totally cool. But I don't like it." Sophie tried to solve herself. "I'm more for something like yellow."
Jane and Maura listened while she elaborated all of her wishes.
"I guess we could go shopping for some of your stuff this afternoon." Jane stated, glancing at Maura who nodded.
"Uh, perfect!" Sophie exclaimed and jumped off the couch. "Can we then also paint the room tomorrow?"
Jane rolled her eyes but agreed. They had to start somewhere. Why not with Sophie. Then maybe Wills room and then Julius and Amanda's. By now Julia had made it a habit to pretend to fall asleep in Sophies room to end up in Amanda's. Jane had no idea but suspected that so far, they hadn't gone further than snuggling.
And Amanda definitely needed that, so they just let them. Maura as a scientist had taken the task to explain how sex works to the girls. Jane still had to chuckle recalling how she had to finally chime in and explain it to the wide-eyed listening girls in a less clinical way.
She scratched her head when thinking that there had been a time when she could never even have imagined being a parent, let alone what it brought with it. She had been glad when Maura had offered because she didn't like to talk about sex, which didn't mean that she didn't enjoy it, but it was just not in her nature. At the end, Maura and she had done the job. Jane with a partly blushed face and Maura with some charts from some books.
R&I
Later that night Tommy and TJ came by for dinner. He greeted Amanda in an equally friendly and warm way like Frankie and the girl relaxed over the meal. Jane caught her staring at them occasionally and could read her mind.
All Rizzoli kids were different and yet the same. None of them seemed to have outgrown a little bit of their childish behavior to each other and it was a relentless source of fun for the kids at the table.
After dinner, Sophie packed a duffle bag and moved into the vacant guestroom of the guest house so that the work on her room could begin. Tommy helped Jane with the bed and cupboards. Maura and Angela were drinking tea and chatting, while they took the furniture apart.
Sophie was excited to help them. When Maura walked into the room to bring them cookies, she touched Janes butt and whispered to her ear: "I might give you a Toolbelt for your next birthday. It makes you look sooo…."
Jane dimpled a smile. "Professional?" she asked with a smirk reading Maura's mind. "You know what I mean." The doc winked and disappeared. Tommy scoffed at the same time as did Sophie. "Ewwwww" Sophie scrunched up her nose and rolled her eyes and Jane blushed.
Two hours later the room was empty and the parts of the furniture were piling up in the basement. Jane was rubbing some sweat from her forehead with the sleeve of her hoodie as she and Tommy sat down to catch some breath.
"Thanks for helping us." Jane said and Tommy gave her a smile.
"Sure. Can't believe that the girls are already so grown-up." He stated.
"Can't believe we finally gave Ma her wished grandkids." Jane chuckled and he laughed.
"well. She would have had one at least." Tommy smirked. "But 7 are better."
TJ was grown-up now. He had his own apartment, a good job at his fathers' company and a girlfriend who Jane was curious to meet. He had to leave for an emergency job after dinner but had promised to help with the other rooms.
"Hard to believe that TJ is an adult now. It won't be long until he has children on his own." Jane mumbled and Tommy scoffed. "I'm not ready to be called grandpa." He explained and Jane chuckled again while patting his knee.
"Yeah. I know. Come on, let's go back upstairs."
