A/N: Another character from a familiar series (with several others making minor appearances in this chapter from other anime/series appearing as well) will be introduced in this series and into The Critique Universe from this chapter forward, while another from a different anime will be mentioned for upcoming stories in the near-future.
P.S.: In case you're wondering what year the story takes place as of now, the Season 2 storyline takes place in the middle of November 2020. COVID-19 isn't involved or interferred in this universe's canon.
P.S.S.: My apologies for the long delay. Recently I got some new stuff from Amazon and Ebay, with one of those items being a new cable for my Nintendo Gamecube since I lost it years ago and which I basically resurrected my favourite nostalgic gaming console from the early 2000s. For that, I even got some games for my Gamecube and Wii, so that I can play through some of my most cherished childhood games. RWBY: Volume 8 returned after a while by the way, and I was stoked to see the 2021 movie Tom & Jerry came to theatres, VOD and HBO Max lately. Oscar nominations came out and I got to watch the 4-hour Snyder Cut of Justice League recently. I even watched the newest episodes of RWBY: Volume 8, and oh my... Glad those events won't happen in this story.
In this thirty-sixth non-canon review episode, RWBY and the others venture into the Edo Island's Glade of Ninjas (Kunoichi no Sato), where as they discover the rich and ancestral area of the island, they meet a few new yet familiar faces for the first time. Despite this later on, Ann Takamaki and one of their new friends from the Glade of Ninjas decide to join Yang Xiao Long in joining the fight by reviewing against the worst cinematic anime adaptation of all time, Dragonball Evolution.
Set after breakfast from the last review episode.
EDO ISLAND
11AM
A few hours after Ruby's last review, Baiken had organized a visit into the Glade of Ninjas for her new friends including team RWBY, Athena, Maka, Ty Lee, Sinon, and the rest of the others. Baiken, with her friends May, Kuradoberi Jam, Millia Rage and Inori Yuzuriha were all leading the way.
"My, that breakfast was delicious!", Ruby and Yang said, "Dried squid and onigiri? Definitely savors the taste of it."
Blake says, "Even the dried fish. Delish.", craving as she proclaimed her love of eating fish.
"We don't drink sake, but the water here is nutrient. I'm pretty sure the sap from the ancient tree isn't purified in the water, right?", Weiss asked to be sure.
Baiken heard the Schnee girl's question, "No, it isn't. The sap from the sacred tree may still be a liquid, but we keep it as some kind of vitamin or mineral as either a water enhancer or a supplement.", adding in all seriousness, "Also, thank you all for reminding me of what happened with Miria earlier today. I give my condolences for you and your loved ones. We respect the fallen, even in the toughest of all struggles. I bet your special one had truly saved the day back then."
"Yeah. It really gets me. It's so dark...", May shuddered, "Not the opposite of literal brightness, but the tone and atmosphere of the situation."
Kuradoberi Jam nodded, "Wordplay.", before noting, "But still, this Issac you speak of is your partner-in-crime?"
"I told them that I used to be a criminal, similar to Robin Hood when we usually take from the rich and give to the poor. But that was a long time ago. Throughout the years, me and my friends have been experiencing civilization change all around us. Hell, we legitimately lived before Disney became a thing which started with their first animated masterpiece in 1937 seven years after The Feastly Decimation and all those years... The classic 40's...the upbeat 50's...the simplistic 60's...the funky 70's...the tubular 80's...the nostalgic 90's...the revolutionary 2000's...and the modern 2010's. The decade of the 2020s is just getting started since it'll be 2021 very soon.", remembered Miria Harvent, reminiscing the many decades she had lived throughout her immortalized life.
Maki Oze awared, "Yeah. We haven't realized that until you told us. We're very sorry for the losses of the few friends that died during those tragic turn of events."
"We all felt so bad when you told us that we give you our blessings and condolences for it.", Iris blessed, putting both hands together in a praying manner.
Maki added, "Even our choice of becoming immortal like you and your friends has a bit of a grey area. I'm not sure we could possibly be immortal like you guys too, but we may have to think about it and the pros and cons that may follow...but we're also surprised to hear that your friends Mika, Celty, Anri and the others over at Ikebukuro also became immortal as well. Isn't that a bit obvious?"
"First there's the sap from the giant tree here on Edo Island, and now there's this Cure-All Elixir that you and your friends created, Miria? I think it's best if they're kept from the public eye. There's over billions of people in both Earth and Remnant, and I believe there may be complications if everyone were to become immortal. People and political superpowers would kill for this, not literally speaking.", Tamaki explains.
Miria said, "Which is why we're going to keep it secret...between us and other individuals or friends that we have yet to meet or discover."
"I remember one time back in early 2003, I remember meeting this kind young girl online on Friendster who appears to be the daughter of a famous Japanese gymnast. Her name was Rei Aragaki. Her mother sadly died some time ago back then, and she also had a grandmother and a South American talking bird that she calls Bigbird.", recounted Rachel.
Yang sighs, "Why do I get the feeling that name reminds me of Sesame Street?"
"We socialized only a couple times back then, and thus we decided to deliver a gift for my friend Rei over at Japan.", the dark-blonde woman in coveralls mentioned.
"What kind of gift?", Blake rose an eyebrow.
Rachel answered, "Since she was a kid, I decided to deliver a bottle of Beachside Blast Fruitopia imported from the US to Japan for her via delivery service, months before it was discontinued that summer. But...we also mixed a small portion of the Cure-All Elixir into it before we delivered it."
"Wait a minute, you distilled the drink?", Weiss questioned.
The dark blonde freelancer replies, "I wouldn't call it by that, Weiss. Like you said earlier, I purified it with the Cure-All Elixir. As a matter of fact, the elixir is flavorless, which means it's almost like water or saline solution. It's not like I was obsessed with her or anything like that, no. I was actually just doing her a favor, that's all. She even said she loved the Fruitopia we've delivered to her since Beachside Blast had a very zany fruity taste. Ever since then, I haven't kept in touch with Rei after all these years, so I assume she had been busy during that time. However, there was an news article on the internet that I looked up recently that haven't got much attention, but people are saying that she may be ageless although I've read that she had already finished elementary school, high school and her college education by the time the article came in yet her appearance has never changed."
"I have a feeling this universe is getting a whole lot bigger...", figured Ruby, "Not just our discovery of this ancestral Edo Island, but also imagine what new people we could meet and befriend. More stories to tell, even! Also sounds like your friend there might've become a highly-talented prodigy herself. Even us Beacon huntresses might stay at the academy when graduation comes."
Yang smirked, "No doubt about that. Thanks for the heads-up, Rachel.", as the female freelancer nodded and smiled faintly.
"Mai," Ty Lee also said to her Fire Nation friend walking alongside her with the others, "What did you think of this island so far?"
Mai smiled faintly, "It reminds me of our homeland. You know, with Aang, Katara, Toph and Zuko? It's splendid here. I even tried the kimono, loose socks and geta sandals on and it feels...very comfortable. Honestly, I don't think having no footwear suits me very well."
"Whatever suits you is fine.", sweetly discussed Ty Lee to her friend.
Athena and Maka ask Baiken, "So where exactly is the Glade of Ninjas anyway?"
"Somewhere in the jungle we're heading into.", Baiken said as she and her fellow companions lead their friends into the jungle once they have went across the open field from the Samurai Kingdom.
Ann Takamaki tilts her head in interest, "A jungle. Nice. Are you sure there aren't any animal predators within?"
"There aren't any. Except there are certain animals or insects in the jungle that might include hazards such as spiders, snakes or ants, but it's only in the jungle area of Edo Island.", the pink-haired samurai said.
Ohana Matsumae shrieks, "Spiders?! Ants?! Snakes?!"
"No worries.", Natsume comforted in her Australian accent to Ohana, "Straya has them too in the outback, but not where I live. I reside in the urban areas of Melbourne, so it's hard for dangerous critters to infest the area. Plus, we're gonna stick together so we don't run into them. I mean, even some of our friends have weapons, skills and instincts, so we're right.", as she rubbed the back of her head with her bigger prosthetic right arm.
The Kissuiso waitress relieves, "Okay... As long as we don't run into a spider web with a poisonous spider on it, I won't freak."
"Don't be.", the ginger-haired girl said, "We do have a powerful samurai on our side anyway."
Millia Rage mentions, "Plus, we never have infestations over at the Samurai Kingdom for a very long time, because they most likely only reside in select parts of the jungle far from here."
"Thank goodness. Would be scary if there was.", Iki Hiyori said as her close relatives Faye and Fuu were walking alongside with her.
Fuu says, "I also heard there were scary-as-hell insect movies in the past, so it's best if we don't know about them."
"Well, that giant ant movie Them! was nominated for an Oscar for visual effects in 1954, but lost to Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is way damn better than the other.", Faye said as her relatives Fuu and Iki were relieved, "Still, we'll be fine."
Inori ensured, "However, it may be possible to get lost within this part of the jungle, so keep close."
Ruby, Yang, Blake, Weiss and all their friends (besides Inori, Baiken, Millia, May and Jam) all said, "Okay."
Everyone then proceeded to go into the jungle as they stayed together.
The jungle was lush and overgrown with many trees, vines and plantlife all around. Ruby, her teammates and her friends look around at the dense and tangled vegetation in the jungle as they walked. For the most part, it definitely felt like they were in the jungle of a deserted tropical island.
"Whoa... We know the cautions this area may have, but this jungle looks beautiful.", Ruby amazed as she witnessed the beauty of the tropical-esque jungle.
Yang sighed happily, "Don't we know it?"
Soon enough, they stop to a point in the jungle when they heard faint sounds from above the trees.
"What's that?", heard Weiss, "Who's there?"
Blake promised her girlfriend, "Don't worry. I'll protect you. You know I love you."
"I'll protect you back. I love you too, you know that?", included the heiress to her Faunus lover.
Leaves rustle above.
Ruby and Yang told as everyone but Baiken, Inori, Millia, Jam and May gathered, "Watch your six.", as they try to look for the source of the mysterious sound...
But then, a mysterious yet familiar ninja girl leaps down from above the trees and does a three-point landing, in which everyone but Baiken and her companions turn to see in surprise as the kunoichi stood back up.
The girl had long black hair that was remarkably divided in three angular bangs at the front, in the back it her twin ponytails are about mid-thigh length and held back tightly in a topknot. She was also wearing a traditional brown ninja outfit, consisting of a sleeveless black upper garment, baggy pants, arm guards, and a black mask that conceals the lower half of her face, while her garments are more revealing than normal ninja ones, and her footwear consists only of cloth bandages that are wrapped around her shins, ankles, arches and instep, somewhat realistically protecting her from foot related injuries as she is barefoot.
"Oh! Hi?", Ruby greeted in surprise, "We mean no harm."
Baiken said, "Don't worry. They're all friends of ours."
The ninja girl, after a moment, then recognizes the pink-haired samurai, "Baiken!", as she came over to greet Baiken with an arm-wrestle handshake with Baiken's only arm besides her weaponized prosthetic one, while she greets Millia, Jam and May with friendly handshakes and/or fistbumps as signs of friendship.
"Who's this, Baiken?", Ruby and Yang ask.
The kunoichi introduced herself, "Oh! Hi! My name's Ibuki. I'm a neighborly friend of Baiken's, and I'm one of the people who live in the Glade of Ninjas on this island. And you guys are?"
"Name's Ruby Rose. This is my elder sister Yang Xiao Long, my teammates Blake Belladonna and Weiss Schnee...", she introduces.
Baiken finished Ruby's introductions, "And their other friends are Athena Cykes, Maka Albarn, Sinon, Ty Lee, Trucy Wright, Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, Blair, Leafa, Alice, Asuna, Mai, Faye Valentine, Fuu Kasami, Iki Hiyori, Akane Tsunemori, Shion Karanomori, Yayoi Kunizaki, Rina Takizaki, Maki Oze, Tamaki Kotatsu, Iris, Miria Harvent, Nice Holystone, Jacuzzi Splot, Celty Sturluson, Mika Harima, Rachel, Anri Sonohara, Ann Takamaki, Futaba Sakura, Ohana Matsumae and Natsume."
"Pleased to meet you all.", Ibuki heartwarmingly smiled.
Athena examined, "You must be one of the characters in the Street Fighter games, presumably? I'm a fan of the series and I own some of the games back home. You're the Shinobi of the Summer Breeze!"
"Indeed, I am aware. You must be from the Ace Attorney series too, right? I happen to collect a few of them too once in a while.", the young kunoichi said.
The orange-haired attorney gladdened, "Indeed, I'm also aware. I am known as the Courtroom Revolutionnaire at my attorney job back home with my friends Phoenix and Apollo. Glad that our franchises are both from the same company, Capcom."
"I'm glad too.", Ibuki replied.
The leader of team RWBY said, "Anyway, we were all heading on our way to visit the Glade of Ninjas for the first time. We have just met Baiken and her friends last night, so today we were hoping to go there. Where would that be?"
"Not very far from here. In fact, the glade is pretty close to here.", the Street Fighter ninja girl says, "Follow us.", as she joined Baiken and the samurai's friends in leading the others to the Glade of Ninjas.
Yang mentioned, "Last night, there was an attack at the Samurai Kingdom in which Baiken and her friends have taken care of-"
"I've saw what happened. I'm a ninja when it comes to surveillance.", said Ibuki.
Blake also added, "Even the first time we all came here, we felt like we travelled back through time a few centuries back, though with some modern-day anachronisms and aesthetics."
"It is a paradise after all, in my opinion. Reminds me of an uncharted island resort.", discussed Weiss.
Baiken told, "You could say that, but it's more than what a paradise has to offer. It's home to the strongest female warriors, both samurai and ninja."
"And I guess pirates could play a part in that? Since there's the Pirate Coastline?", Maka Albarn presumes.
May gleefully said, "Oh, yes! Definitely! My friends who are part of our part-time crew known as the Jellyfish Pirates live there. I consider them as my family."
"If so, that would be a good lineage.", Tsubaki Nakatsukasa delighted, "I'm even a ninja just like you, Ibuki!"
The young kunoichi ecstatically responds, "Wow! You too?"
"Well, she is my partner both as a Death Weapon chain scythe and in romantic relations.", Maka excused for her DWMA partner.
Ibuki respectfully replies, "Congratulations!"
"I may be considered as a ninja due to my weapon Gambol Shroud, but I'm most likely a huntress. My huntress teammate Weiss is my girlfriend too, though.", mentions Blake, also noting her relationship with the heiress.
The Street Fighter character says, "Congrats to you too, Blake! You and Weiss kinda symbolize yin and yang, am I right?"
"When you think about it, we do have a contrast of black and white. But yin and yang... That is a symbol of unity. Maybe even our unity between the two of us.", Weiss fondly told as she and her Faunus girlfriend exchange romantic glances to each other.
Millia Rage playfully said as they saw Blake and Weiss' romance, "You're both in love..."
"Ooh!", May and Kuradoberi Jam teased as well.
Blake and Weiss couldn't help but turn away and blush happily.
Ruby and Yang congratulated for their teammates, "Looks like they're destined for one another, alright."
Ibuki then says to Yang, "So I've heard that you and your teammates are well-known huntresses from Remnant, right? Beacon Academy, I presume?"
"Yes, indeed. And I've heard you were in the Street Fighter games. We just met Ann here a few days ago during our social event.", the blonde huntress recognized.
The young kunoichi said, "I've been getting that a lot lately. So this is your first time here on this island?"
"Just visiting for a few days. We arrived last night, and we met Baiken. It felt like we're in the Edo period, but in the present era with minor modern anachronistic-like additions like technology.", Ann Takamaki explains.
The elder sister of Ruby Rose told, "Although fighting Grimm and protecting Remnant and Beacon is our specialty, we also did movie reviews here and there in our spare time. Some good, some bad, some even so-so."
"You review? I do too!", the Street Fighter ninja girl surprised.
Yang and Ann asked, "You have?"
"Yes! Movies, games, and TV shows. There's a variety.", simply unveiled Ibuki, "And how about you, Ann?"
Ann pondered, "Basically underrated and overrated anime and also ones that are almost criminally forgotten. I'm very self-aware that I'm in Persona 5, both the game and The Animation... But reviewing anime is my spare time specialty alongside my quality time with my Phantom Thief friends."
"I see.", the kunoichi nodded.
Soon enough across the jungle, everyone noticed a village not too far from them, presumably being the Glade of Ninjas as mentioned.
"Welcome to the Glade of Ninjas, also known in Japanese as Kunoichi no Sato.", Ibuki introduced.
As everyone stopped to check out the view, which is an open area with no trees beyond the jungle area, where it lies a village with numerous huts that are very similar to the machiya townhouses back in the Samurai Kingdom. While there were numerous bamboo trees along with the normal ones in the jungle, there was also a beautiful waterfall that wasn't huge or tall, but still was quite big as water was pouring down from it leading to a hot spring at the bottom, while a wooden bridge path that would lead to the top of it. A great big tree with no leaves was near the path with an ancient shrine placed close to it, and there were many residents going about their days in the Glade.
Athena sighs in amazement, "Where have I seen this before?"
"Amazing...", Maka and Tsubaki interested.
Sinon smiled, "Wouldn't you know it... It's beautiful."
"So this is your home, huh? Kinda resembles the Street Fighter games, but the heck with it, looks cool.", team RWBY said.
Ann Takamaki said, "So what do your neighbors here in the Glade do?"
"We're kunoichis. We live and train here in the Glade as ninjas.", Ibuki told.
Futaba Sakura presumes, "So, you and the other kunoichis are covert agents or mercenaries going undercover in the ways of espionage?"
"That, and we're also allies to those in the Samurai Kingdom and the Pirate Coastline.", the young female ninja confirmed.
Leafa attentively interested, "Very fascinating. This place... Are there any well-known kunoichis around here? I know that I myself am an accomplished kendo practitioner, but the art of ninjitsu sounds pretty nice."
"Story of our lives since we've reviewed the two new Ninja Turtles movies.", Ruby and Athena mentioned, "Besides that, I bet the kunoichis here must be famous around these parts."
Ibuki joyfully answers, "Yeah, there are many kunoichis here just to name a few. There's the Hyakka, the Hanzo Kunoichis, the trio known as The Ninja Souls, and some others."
"Plus, they're highly skilled for their expertise in surveillance and combat.", Baiken included, "I was visiting here the night I recieved the news of what happened to you girls last night."
Faye tilted her head in interest, "I see you got the message. We already fixed the situation with our other friends back then."
"We're not even gonna ask, those sound interesting. No wonder it's authentic to ancient Japan.", Yang said, "We should think about getting some apparel here later on."
Blake and Weiss reply, "Maybe we should.", asking the Street Fighter kunoichi, "Would you mind taking us around for a bit?"
"We're heading over to my place, come on.", said Ibuki as the group followed her and Baiken.
As they strolled through the village, they saw many of the civilians, including some of the Hanzo Kunoichis Ibuki had mentioned, along with some others, going about their business.
At one point, the group stopped to one of the townhouses in the village as Ibuki said, "Okay, guys. We're here."
"Quaint so far.", Nice Holystone says, her boyfriend Jacuzzi Splot still awed by the antiquity of the glade.
Opening the shoji door and entering, the interior of Ibuki's home was very similar to all the other homes on the island as well as the washitsu guest rooms over at Baiken's castle. The living space wasn't too big nor small, but somewhere in between that is big enough.
Like the other homes in the island, there was modern technology (like TVs, equipment or devices) while there seem to be 2 or 3 other rooms in the house. Shelves of kunoichi equipment and collections of movies and games were placed on either side of the 4K TV in between them.
"Don-chan, I'm back.", melodically greeted Ibuki.
Just then, a Japanese tanuki (raccoon dog) comes as Ibuki picked it up and petted it fondingly.
"You have a pet raccoon?", Ruby Rose smiled.
The Street Fighter character corrected, "Tanuki, to clarify."
"I hate tanuki statues. That's why I don't have them over at my castle.", Baiken noted, "But just to be fair, Ibuki's tanuki here seems alright above all else."
Yang Xiao Long explored the home, "We know you're a Street Fighter character, but I never knew you also had a movie and game collection."
"Yes, me and Ibuki like to review stuff together every once in a while.", the pink-haired samurai informs.
Blake Belladonna simply replies, "Good to know, Baiken."
"I know we're huntresses at Beacon Academy, and we still are glad to be, but we like to review movies from time to time in our spare time whenever there's time off.", Ruby Rose confessed.
Ibuki rose an eyebrow in interest, "Really, huh?", before coming up with an idea, "If that's so, I was thinking of reviewing a movie with your blonde girlfriend if that's alright."
"Girlfriend?!", Ruby and Yang shocked before saying, "We're sisters! Although we still kinda feel that way from here and there, but that doesn't mean we're unrelated!"
The black-haired ninja embarrassingly answered, "Oh... I-I didn't know. Sorry. I was just kidding."
"It's alright.", Yang accepted her apology, "I do wish to review a movie with you, Ibuki."
Ann Takamaki cuts into the conversation, "Uh, girls? I was wondering if I could review with you guys too. I haven't reviewed a movie with you or any of your teammates so far."
"I don't see why not.", the blonde huntress irresistibly agreed, before asking Ruby, Blake and Weiss, "How about you, girls? Wanna join?", cheerfully.
Ruby decided, "Well, we were thinking of going around the Glade of Ninjas for a bit. Who knows, there might be some delicious food to try out or sights to see!"
"We were thinking the same thing.", Blake and Weiss said.
Akane Tsunemori said, "Who knows? If there are shops here, maybe a few souvenirs sounds pleasant?"
"Or maybe special outfits similar to the Edo era, even!", Maki Oze delighted.
Athena Cykes gave her opinion, "That doesn't sound like a bad idea. That would be nice."
"I was also thinking of stopping over at Kasuga's place here. Any idea where she might live?", Sinon asked.
Ibuki said, "A few houses from here. Why?"
"Just looking around. Kasuga and her friends are currently over at Niagara Falls with Cameron, Yume, Emi, Eureka and their friends after winning a raffle.", the blue-haired sniper girl recounted, "I was hoping to know, by any chance, if we could check on over and explore?"
Leafa perked up, "And besides, I think they're having a great time so far."
"I'm interested to know more about ninja skills here. I'm physically fit and limber, and I used to ride trains as a stowaway. Just curious to discover new things every once in a while. I consider my agility akin to a ninja's.", Rachel suggested.
The female ninja said, "In case you're interested, one of the people here might help you with that. You know, give it a test drive and all? Case you're interested?"
"I always wondered what being a ninja is like. I've seen them on movies, shows and the Internet before...and I've been imagining what it feels like to be a kunoichi here. Just out of mere curiosity.", the dark-blonde freelancer said.
Ibuki tutorialized, "Maybe me and some of my friends over at the village training grounds could teach you some of the ropes. You'll get the hang of it."
"Don't mind if I do! I have experience in ninja training, so me and Ibuki are gonna help Rachel.", Tsubaki happily offered.
Maka proved, "I'd love to, but I was thinking of going with the others for a bit while you girls do your thing."
"Thanks, girls.", Rachel said.
The ninja girl informed, "You guys go on ahead. I'll go help out Rachel for a bit.", before she and Rachel rushed off.
Sinon sighed, "Anyway, we're gonna go and explore around here for a bit."
"Maybe since there's a hot spring and a waterfall here, we should check it out too.", Leafa suggested.
Ruby chuckled, "Have fun, guys!", as some of their friends go off to explore the village; she then tells her elder huntress sister, "Me, Blake, Weiss, Baiken and her friends are gonna go check out the beautiful waterfall nearby. You, Ann and Futaba have fun, okay?"
"You got it, little sis.", Yang compassionately said before Ruby, Blake, Weiss, Baiken and the latter's friends went off.
Ann comes over to close the shoji door, before suggesting, "Speaking of anime and movies, why don't we review a movie together? The three of us?", suggested the black-haired kunoichi.
Ruby's elder sister says, "Why not? What were you thinking? Any suggestions?"
"I was thinking... Dragonball Evolution.", Ann suggests.
Yang exclaimed, "What? You mean that awful US Dragonball movie adaptation?! I knew this would come... Makes me cringe by it. Last night, me, my sister and my teammates were reviewing a loose manga movie adaptation of Edge of Tomorrow, also known as All You Need is Kill. No wonder Weiss skipped that movie in her recommendations alongside other anime-based movies like Alita, Ghost in the Shell and Speed Racer. How did that not cross my mind?!"
"I know, I've seen it before one time, and...my gosh. I prefer the anime.", the platinum blonde-haired girl said, almost speechless by how the movie turned out.
Futaba sums up, "Righteously. Hopefully it isn't the same as The Last Airbender movie... For better or for worse, presumably leaning towards the latter.", Futaba Sakura estimates, "The movie even has a critical score of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and only 50 million dollars at the box office over a 30 million budget with only $9,000,000 in the US box office standings... It was a cinematic failure..."
"I hate the sound of that, but...let's just do it.", Yang sighed as she stretched her fingers, while Ann goes to search and find Dragonball Evolution on Ibuki's movie collection shelf and put the movie in Ibuki's 4K Blu-Ray player.
Ann sighed, "We at least have to try.", as the movie was beginning to start.
Yang Xiao Long, Ann Takamaki and Futaba Sakura's Commentary of Dragonball Evolution (Part 1)
"In a long line of botched live-action anime adaptations...Dragonball Evolution is arguably the most infamous. I was hoping to talk about this cinematic ball-buster, but sadly, even though me, my sister and my teammates are also fans of anime shows and films, Dragon Ball is not one we know a great deal about.", Yang began, giving her opinion.
Ann Takamaki says, "This is where me and Futaba comes in. The Dragon Ball franchise is one of the most popular animes ever made. Taking place in a parallel dimension, it follows the adventures of Goku and his friends defending Earth against intergalactic aliens, androids and other various evils who really like to yell."
"With spinoffs including Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super, there's over 700 episodes of this franchise, and it's still going. So, naturally, it makes sense for Hollywood to try and capitalize on it, and make a movie for Americans. How did it go?", Futaba Sakura added.
The blonde huntress asked to clarify, "Hey, was Ghost in the Shell really that bad?"
"Kind of, yeah.", the orange-haired hacker corrected.
Yang rebuked, "Then this did really bad!"
"Fans of the show and newcomers hated this adaptation, claiming it missed not only what Dragon Ball was about, but dumbed it down so much that no average moviegoer would be able to enjoy it. It's said by many to be the worst anime adaptation of all time. So let's not put it off any longer...", the platinum blonde-haired girl explained.
Ruby's elder sister prepared, "Let's take a look at this Dragon Ball Suck with Dragonball Evolution."
Dragonball Evolution
As the movie began with colorful constellations that shape into people and objects in which Grandpa Gohan talks about, Ann warned during this scene, "I hope you're ready for an intro that's frontloaded as shit!", as the prologue continued as Gohan explains about the warlord Piccolo and a group of brave warriors creating the Mafuba.
"Wow, I'm both lost and bored.", groaned Yang as she facepalmed.
Ann and Futaba bewared, "Get used to that.", while the prologue told about Piccolo and his disciple Oozaru bringing the human race to the brink of annihilation.
"Okay... Shot in the dark. A great evil tried to take over, is defeated, and now is trying to come back.", confused the blonde huntress.
The wavy-haired girl exampled, "It's almost like you've seen a movie at some point in your life."
"Enough to know when to fast-forward.", simply taught the elder sister of Ruby Rose, resuming, "We see our main character, played by Justin Chatwin, named... Goku?", before thinking out loud, "Um... Me, Ruby, Blake and Weiss don't know a ton about the anime, but that really doesn't look like a Goku."
The glasses-wearing teen reasoned, "Well, for a movie that has a whitewashed cast, it's kinda offending."
"It is?", Yang conjectures.
Futaba proved, "Yes, of stereotyping like that!"
"I, for one, embrace culturally diverse names that in no way raise any questions or seem distracting.", Ann supported.
The blonde huntress shrugged, "Whatever you say.", as the movie continues with Goku training with sweat running down to his nose, "Goku is trying his hardest to master his epic nose sweat..."
"This movie clearly understands what to shoot in slow-mo.", admitted the platinum-blonde teenager.
Yang continues, "...as his grandpa states what we know this adaptation took to heart...", just when Gohan states there are no rules during the scene where Goku was training.
"Well, we've given an excuse not to follow the series, but we refuse.", submitted the orange-haired hacker.
Ruby's elder sister stated when Gohan then told Goku in the movie that the first one to touch the ground loses, "That's the second rule after the first rule of there being no rules!", just before a fight scene between Goku and Gohan happens, with a noticable poor use of green-screen.
The three girls reviewing the movie looked disinterested by this.
"Crouching Tiger, not-so-hidden green screen.", Ann supposed.
Futaba additionally thought, "Imagine what the audience reaction was like during the first two minutes of this movie... Refunds.", as Goku notices a beetle landing on the rope before he slaps it into Gohan's mouth.
"This movie does know the difference between an anime and a Donald Duck cartoon, right? Pumbaa would be like, 'Slimy, yet seething with anger-filled disappointment!'", imitates Yang.
The wavy-haired girl considers, "I bet Gohan's like when Goku was knocked and slid into a watermelon bed, 'Next, we'll fight without the wires!'"
"So in the original show, Goku was a young, naive fighter obsessed with perfecting his gift and honoring the art of combat, fighting when he needs to. Here, he's a whiny little pissant who just wants to be cool and get laid.", assumed the glasses-wearing teenager.
The blonde huntress gave her opinion soon after, "To be fair, though, that is a lot of episodes of a character's life to fill into one movie. Isn't that kind of slumming things up a bit?"
"Goku's grandpa gives him a present for his birthday: a Dragon Ball, which, when combined with the other six, will grant a perfect wish.", summarizes Ann.
Yang stated further, "Well, we know they never found because this film is still here."
"So the Dragon Ball universe that seemed to magically take place in the past, present and future, expanding the worldbuilding possibilities of the imagination, is now just the future.", the platinum blonde-haired woman described.
The elder sister of Ruby Rose guessed, "Apocalyptic? Utopian? Techno?"
"Nope. Just bland.", answers Ann.
Yang replied, "Huh... Again, since me, Ruby, Blake and Weiss have not seen much of the anime, we can still pick up that the movie's environment looks practically nothing like the show's environment."
"Even the environment in the film is not very well-defined. It would take a while to even realize we were in the future unless we were told. This could be the set to any random film, where with the show, just one image could tell you immediately you're watching Dragon Ball.", speculated Futaba.
The lilac-eyed blonde noted, "Well, at least the film's bullies are unfortunately generic too.", as they watch a snippet of Goku confronting Fuller and his bully friends, with the former making a facial expression.
"Yes, you'll realize very quickly that the facial expressions that Goku has range from violent farting to try-to-project-himself-off-the-ground farting.", the wavy-haired girl grossed out.
Yang cringed, "Don't a lot of people do fart jokes when talking about this movie?"
"If they think they're following Rule #1 in this movie, they thought wrong.", the orange-haired hacker believed.
Afterwards, the blonde-haired huntress synopsizes, "Meanwhile, on Bowser's airship, a villain named Piccolo is wondering why being hundreds of feet in the air gets him surprisingly little wind resistance."
"In the show, Piccolo is complex and had interesting reasons for why he wanted ultimate power. He was so interesting that even his offspring would eventually become friends with our main hero.", outlooked Ann.
Yang demonstrates, "Here?"
"Just a colossal twat."
"Right."
"He wants to take over the world, because...you know, evil and stuff...and sends out his minions to find the Dragon Balls to achieve his goal.", Futaba told the following scene, as Piccolo's kunoichi henchwoman Mai enters the scene in the movie.
Ruby's elder sister mocked, "That ninja's like, 'Do you like my assassin uniform? It'll make sure you know that I have breasts.' My gosh, if Ninja Slayer wasn't skimpy enough..."
"Enough of that shit! We've got to cut to horny Goku!", the platinum blonde-haired teen said as the scene abruptly cuts back to Goku at his high school when Piccolo was about to say something that his henchwoman Mai was waiting for.
The glasses-wearing teenager said, "To be fair, Goku in the show was awkwardly horny, too."
"Yeah, but he never seen a girl before, so he didn't know he was horny."
"Does that make it better?"
"I'll have to say that's better than this.", Yang cuts in Ann and Futaba's judgement, the two Persona 5 girls nodding; she reacts to Goku mentioning the alien race called the Nameks during class, whom have nearly destroyed Earth 2,000 years prior to the movie's events, "Well, we have no idea how this future works, so we have no idea how crazy this is supposed to sound."
Futaba joked, "I bet the teacher was like, 'Keep it at Scientology.'"
"But it looks like Goku's help with the lockers might have earned him some tail. And I'm not saying it in a literal way.", the blonde huntress observes the next excerpt of the film as she, Ann and Futaba watch when Goku meets Chi-Chi, the latter informing him that because she's named as Chi-Chi doesn't make her a complete idiot; Yang and the other two Persona 5 girls then reacted, "Yeah!", before being puzzled by the scene, "What?"
The orange-haired girl said as they see an amazing cinematographic shot in the next scene of the film, "Oh, that's a pretty shot.", before cutting away back to Goku preparing to go to Chi-Chi's party, "Well, back to shit."
"Is there a film theory that he's just the pain in the ass he played in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds after the aliens invaded?", Yang theorizes.
Ann shook her head, "Nobody wasted any theories on this film.", summarizing after, "Goku sneaks out of his house to go to Chi-Chi's party, where the bullies, who literally have no reason to mock him, mock him."
"I wonder if the bully also said when they mock Goku to walk away, 'Yeah, you freak with your good looks, and your...your nice hair, and your fancy clothing... What are we doing?'", imagines the glasses-wearing teenager, as she, Ann and Yang sang after spectating the moment when Goku says he won't walk away, "The dorks are gonna rumble toniiiight!"
The elder sister of Ruby Rose imagined as the bullies try attacking Goku but he easily dodges their hits, "The bullies must've thought, 'Thank God we all know really bad kung fu!'"
"Especially this guy with his poor punch. How far away was that punch?", troubled Futaba, just as Goku in the film kicks one of the bullies into the fountain, as the delinquent splashes in slow motion.
Yang mimicks, "I've been Snydered!"
The wavy-haired teen notices when she sees Goku slid across a car hood upside down on his head after averting a bully's attack with a crowbar, "Did he just slide across the car with his head?! Oh, come on, even Krillin wouldn't do that!", asking her hacker girlfriend, "By the way, I presume he's not in this movie?"
"Yep.", the orange-haired hacker disappointed.
Ann scowled, "Piece of shit film."
"Should I be angry because of that? Because I am angry. Really angry.", berated the blonde huntress, her lilac eyes turning blood red in anger.
The platinum-blonde girl continued nevertheless, "So the original Goku who hated fighting, although in the anime he loved fighting but only hated needless violence, only did it when he had to, which is now tossing one-liners like an unfunny James Bond.", summarizing also, "Nevertheless, he defeats the bullies and gets friendly with Chi-Chi.", then watching the snippet where Goku tells Chi-Chi that his grandfather Gohan would explain everything when he turns 18, in which Gohan in the meantime suddenly was attacked by Piccolo and Mai during the movie, "But he might not get his wish, as grandpa is attacked by Piccolo, who is literally dressed like a piccolo clarinet."
"He destroys the house because, apparently, Piccolo can do that now, and Goku comes home to his dying mentor.", mentions Futaba as Piccolo in the film breaks the house into pieces as Goku rushes to see Gohan dying, the latter telling him to find the master Roshi in Paozu and remind him that Piccolo returned.
Yang imitates, "Gohan is like, 'Now, if you'll excuse me, there's a dead mentor poker game with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Uncle Ben, Dumbledore and Mickey from the Rocky movies. I need to attend. And I'd better hurry. I hear Gandalf might drop by briefly."
"After searching the house, Goku finds, I think, a second present he was going to give him.", Ann recounted whilst Goku in the film opens the chest to find an orange gi judo uniform before Gohan's laughter was heard echoing.
The glasses-wearing teenager regarded, "Even his dead grandpa laughs at how stupid that looks."
"But he quickly discovers he's not alone.", Ruby's elder sister condensed when Goku in the next excerpt suddenly had a gun pointed at him by Bulma, the latter asking him where it was while Goku asks if she was Piccolo.
The wavy-haired teen responded Goku's question from the movie, "With casting so bad, she could be."
"Actually, this is Bulma, played by Emmy Rossum.", introduced Futaba.
Yang unsettled, "Is she gonna be singing in this like her performance in The Phantom of the Opera?"
"No."
"Good. Just to be sure of it."
"Anyway, another lesson about Bulma's anime depiction. They originally met when Goku was a little boy, but now in this film they're the same age. It works, because...wait, no, it doesn't.", the orange-haired hacker says, shaking her head whilst the three see the same scene when Goku met Bulma in the movie.
Ann sighs, "You know, this movie has enough whitewashing, do we really have to dubwash too?", just before they see a flashback with Bulma as she tried to stop Mai from escaping the Capsule Corporation.
"What is this, Spy Kids?! I've seen toy commercials with more realistic technology!", criticizes Futaba, surprised by the sudden flashback, while the movie continues with Bulma explaining to Goku about her device that can locate signature wavelengths by the Dragon Balls.
The blonde huntress states, "Thank God they talk about the important stuff that really matters in this film."
BOOM!
"What in the?!", startled Yang all of a sudden by the sudden noise.
Ann and Futaba questioned in alert, "What was that?"
"YANG!", Ruby Rose's voice called out in a worried tone from outside.
The elder sister of Ruby Rose fretted, "Ruby?", as she goes to open the shoji door and come out to see the commotion, seeing Ruby come over to her big sister.
"Yang! We were exploring for a bit, but on the way we saw someone inside her home crafting something, like a ball or an orb or something like that, but then she did something strange with it, so we decided to go back to what we were doing, and then boom! We went back to see what happened and... She's dead...", Ruby panicked.
The elder sister's lilac eyes contracted in shock.
Ann and Futaba gasped silently.
Yang responded to this, "Oh my god... We better go get help-"
"Ruby! Yang!", Blake and Weiss called out to their teammates.
Both Ruby and Yang decide to come over to where Blake, Weiss, Baiken and the latter's friends were to find out what happened just then.
"You might wanna see this...", Blake says as she and her teammates see what happened.
The girl in the house where the recent incident had just happened was a slender fair-skinned young girl with straight waist-length twin-tailed dull-blue hair, bright green cotton-bands with bangs hanging on the left side and greenish-blue eyes. She had a chest bandage covering her breast area and a small loincloth on her groin area to cover the private areas.
By the time Ruby and Yang got there, the blue-haired girl seemed to be perfectly fine.
"Baiken...what happened?", Yang and Ruby ask the pink-haired samurai, the latter supposing, "We thought she..."
The female feudal lord of the Samurai Kingdom answers, "It appears that one of her bombs she just worked on exploded by accident. It seemed like she recovered shortly after."
"Yeah, but...", Blake and Weiss tried to excuse what has happened.
Baiken interrupts, "She's alright. Like I said, everyone here is immortal."
"It's like Baiken's wound that Millia, May and I saw that from last night's battle. In a short amount of time, it vanished...as if nothing happened. The old way of saying that time heals wounds...it's almost instantaneous.", Kuradoberi Jam recounted.
"We... We see.", team RWBY said in unison, while Ann and Futaba come over to see what happened.
Ann and Futaba concerned, "What's going on?"
"Ann, Futaba, you remember last night when we said about Baiken and the inhabitants on this island being immortal? This is one of them, and she's alright now.", Ruby assumed before she queried Baiken, "Who is that girl again?"
Inori Yuzuriha apprises, "Her name is Hibachi. She's one of the people on this island who works on making explosives on this island, notably for creative bombs and fireworks."
"Now I see why.", the leader of team RWBY understood.
The platinum-blonde girl calmed down, "That almost scared us. It sounded like it was fatal, but we're surprised that she was unscathed after that incident..."
"I feel like we should get back to our review. Maybe it'll also help us calm down after that startlement.", the orange-haired hacker said.
The blonde huntress nods, "I think we should. You have fun, Ruby. We'll meet you later, gotta go resume our movie review."
"Okay then. Have fun.", Ruby said, waving to her big sister as she, Blake, Weiss, Baiken and the latter's friends watch Yang, Ann and Futaba go back to Ibuki's place to continue the Dragonball Evolution review; "I love my big sister.", the silver-eyed girl said as the others nod in agreement.
Resuming the movie review, Futaba resumed, "They agree to join forces to find the other Dragon Balls, and they ride on her...", before she, Yang and Ann see Bulma make an ATV vehicle appear like a Transformer.
"My God, the bullshit levels are through the roof! Not actually due to the fact that Dragon Ball even had houses stored in pill-sized capsules...or like in Ant-Man with the Pym Particles, but you get the idea.", appalled Yang.
Ann synopsized, "They go to find Roshi, as his grandpa instructed, and locate him in the house from Up. Goku wakes up Roshi and makes the sad discovery that Chow Yun-fat found a film worse than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End to appear in.", while the three girls watch Goku fight Roshi as Bulma tells him to stop.
"CGI is atrocious!", mimicked the elder sister of Ruby Rose.
The wavy-haired teenager noted, "To be fair, Chow Yun-fat, while certainly different, is not that bad a choice for this role. He's a wisecracker, a little pervy, and energetically full of himself. But then there's scenes like this when he finds out Goku's grandfather was dead.", as the three react to the part when Roshi realizes Gohan was dead, his smile disappearing comically.
Afterwards, Yang, Ann and Futaba were utterly speechless by this bad scene.
Yang facepalms in response to the scene, "It doesn't get rid of the pain."
"But it does make it hurt a little less.", groaned Futaba.
To be continued...
