The week passed quickly and soon it was time for Jane and Maura to return to New York. The kids would stay one more week. Jane leaned back in her first-class seat of the plane and sighed. She felt the workout of moving loads of heavy furniture pieces around the house and she was looking forward to the massage Maura had promised her while they had been waiting to board the plane.
They had managed to set up all of the kids bedrooms over the week which was only possible because of Tommy and TJ. Jane hated moving and she swore to herself that this was the last time she was doing so.
"You will have to carry me out of the house. Im not moving anymore." Jane had complained to Maura who had patted her knee. This is when she had promised Jane a massage and it had actually soothed Jane.
Maura was good at giving massages and it was nice to be married to someone talented like her wife.
Jane had passed by the BPD to sign her new contract and have a talk with Cavanaugh. The thing with NYPD had shipped well too. Her new (old) boss had given her a tour of the building which was almost the same as when Jane had left. Except for the bullpen, which had changed.
The interims sergeant was approximately in Korsaks age when her friend had retired. He planned on retiring as well. He only waited for the young generation as he had called it to take over. Jane had liked him a lot and was sure that he would do a good job until she took on the job.
Frankie would be in her unit and under her Command. He was going to be made the lead officer of his team and Jane was happy and proud at the same time.
"You know, I was thinking that maybe we should adopt an animal for the family." Maura stated while glancing at a cat in the magazine in her hand. Jane recalled Bass her tortoise. It had been years since she wondered what had happened to Bass when they had moved away.
When she had asked Maura once, she had gotten no clear reply. Seemingly it was a hurtful topic to the doc and Jane had never asked again.
"I don't think that it's a good idea, Maur." She grumbled still a bit grumpy. Flying sometimes made her grumpy. Or was it the fact that she didn't like to end their holiday? Maura chuckled and squeezed her hand as they came across a turbulence.
"We can talk about it when we are back in Boston." Maura stated, still holding on to her hand despite the turbulence had passed and Jane agreed.
R&I
Almost five weeks later Jane found herself sleepless next to Maura. The moonlight lit the room, and the brunette could see the docs soft face when she slept. She chuckled silently at the soft snore coming from her wife's mouth and she wondered what Maura was dreaming of while her eyes moved under the closed eyelids.
She would take a drive to Boston the next day to start her new job as sergeant with BPD. It was exciting of course. But also, somehow annoying. She would miss her family. Despite Angela being around she would miss the girls and Will and of course Maura.
R&I
The first week past pretty quick. Janes first case in Boston was an easy one. But she had to adjust to some new colleagues and conditions. Finding Pike at her first crime scene didn't exactly cheer her up but took it with humor.
She and Maura talked on the phone daily and exchanged plenty of messages. The more of the week passed the easier it became for Jane to be apart. She missed them of course but seeing how fast the first week had passed the next five would be a piece of cake she thought while getting ready for a drink with Korsak.
Her former colleague who still owned the dirty robber greeted her with a huge smile when she padded into the bar. He immediately pushed a blue moon over the counter and Jane grabbed it joyfully. "Man hadn't had one of these in a long time." She stated and toasted to Korsak.
"Is it still as good as it was?" he chuckled, watching her put the bottle onto the counter.
"Yep." Jane grinned and sighed. They chatted about their past years for a while and instead of the one planned beer, Jane ended up having three. The light chatter with old friends who were almost like family made her forget the time and she cringed when finding a notification about 6 missed calls from Maura when she walked out of the dirty robber.
"Shit!" she mumbled, feeling slightly drunk. She hoped that Maura wasn't mad, but probably not, because she hardly ever was. She was a very understanding person, and she knew that if Jane didn't reply it was for a good reason.
The brunette leaned her back against her car and gazed at the moon while she called the doc back.
"Hey baby!" she grinned into the phone when her wife picked up at the second ring.
She cringed in surprise when Maura sounded rather angry when asking where she had been.
"I told you that I was going to have a drink with Korsak at the dirty robber." Jane tried to sound calming.
"For 5 hours? I thought that you have gotten killed!" Maura's voice was giving away anger and fear. "Hey, come on, it was fun. I forgot the time. I thought that it was okay." Jane stated and watched how a drunken pair left the dirty robber to sway down the pavement.
"You could have texted!" Maura scolded her, sounding unnerved. "I have been sitting at my phone for the whole evening like a stupid itiot and you haven't even been thinking about me!" Now she was getting into a much worse rage and Jane rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry okay? I didn't mean it. I just forgot time. But that doesn't mean that Korsak or anyone is more important than you are. We just lost track of time because we haven't seen each other for a while." Jane explained lamely while the beeping noise announced that Maura had hung up.
Jane understood her side. Of course. But she also thought that Maura was being overdramatic and wondered why.
She drove home to take a shower and get ready for bed. Once dressed in a fresh pair of boy shorts and a fresh t-shirt she grabbed the phone from her nightstand to try to talk to Maura again. But the doc didn't pick up nor did she reply or read Janes messages.
Stupid app Jane thought who waited for the checks to turn blue to show that Maura had read them. The whole situation left her wondering. Maybe Maura missed her. Maybe this was turning hard on Maura who had initially thought that they would be great for the six weeks.
Jane set the alarm with a deep sigh and replaced the phone on the nightstand. She hated when things weren't good between them. And she couldn't even remember the last time this had happened in their marriage.
R&I
The next morning, she immediately checked to find no message from her wife. Going through her morning routine of brushing her teeth and drinking a quick coffee while leaning against the counter she was amazed as how quick one could fall back into old patterns.
After years of sitting down and taking breakfast with the kids she was back to her life as a single. It was just crazy. Yet it didn't stop he from stopping at the bistro of the corner at the precinct to buy some doughnut as breakfast and padded into the precinct to start her workday.
The case came in late. And seen as it was already Thursday evening Jane already knew that she wouldn't be able to go home to Maura and the kids over the weekend.
She checked her phone once at beacon hill around midnight to see that Maura hadn't written nor read her message yet. But her kids had written plenty of things into the WhatsApp group of the family. She smiled warmly when she read all the trivial messages about school and homelife. Sophie asking for permission to go to the cinema with Julia and Amanda.
It made her feel closer to them. A warm smile was still tugging on the corner of her mouth when she crawled into the king size bed, which was definitely too big for her alone. For the fraction of a moment, she pondered the possibility to ask one of the kids about Maura but then let go of the idea when realizing that she didn't want to drag them into their fight.
"She's going to come around Jane." Frankie stated when she called him in despair. She followed his advice and sent Maura a good night message before turning of the lights.
