Upon returning to Maura's room, she found Julia to her left and Sophie to her right. They were holding Maura's hands and rubbing them to make them warm. The blonde hadn't moved nor had her reaction improved.

Jane sat back onto the edge of the bed where she had sat before and told them what she had found out. Both girls listened carefully, and Jane felt proud of them. As it was late at night, she sent them home and this time they didn't argue. Maybe it was also easier for them because they had a diagnosis now and they knew that Maura wouldn't die.

"Take a shower. Eat something proper and try to get a good night's rest." Jane advised them. "It has been a long day."

She kissed their cheeks before they left and laid down next to Maura to hold her tight. "Its going to be okay, Maur." She whispered and stroke over her wifes head, still holding back her tears.

"Jane?" the voice was low and cracked.

"I'm here baby. We are in hospital." Jane grabbed the glass of water, resting next to the bed and held it out to the doc who sucked greedily at the straw.

"Take your time baby. Not so fast." She calmed her wife who followed her advice and released the straw with a cough.

"What happened? Did we have an accident?" Maura asked. Jane had been prepared by the doctors that Maura could struggle with temporary memory loss due to the brain tumor. It was still hard on her to see it happening.

"No. You had a seizure this afternoon. We called the paramedics." She replied slowly and gauged Maura's reaction. "A seizure?" Maura wondered. "Why? How?"

Jane took her wife's hand and nuzzled her face into Maura's head before hesitantly speaking up. "You have a brain tumor." The petite body stiffened in her arms. She felt the wheels turning in this beautiful brain. Then Maura swallowed and Jane knew by Maura's reaction that she recalled the incidents from the past weeks. Shock made Maura take on rambling statistics. A mannerism of her brain to cope with it.

Jane listened to her in silence, feeling the first tears falling from her eyes. "Don't cry Jane." Maura stopped her rambling as abruptly as it had begun, and she pulled Jane into a kiss. Jane only cried more as their lips touched. "Don't cry." Maura whispered again while holding her face cupped between her hands. "Its okay." Maura whispered against her lips but then started crying as well.

Once feeling stronger Jane told her about the plan of treatment and moving her to Boston. She told her about her plan to take the girls out of school and how she hoped that they could finish their schoolyear like that.

She had called Angela and organized for her to help with the kids. She had informed Constance and Arthur who had offered to get the jet of the Isles foundation ready for the transport and Maura gave her a proud look.

"We can't fly. Actually, the docs think that the flight last week has contributed to your quick worsening of state. So, we are going to take a road trip. Just you and me. We take it in two legs. Some 200 miles per day. I even looked for some interesting museums to visit." Jane stated with a grin in the hope to lighten the mood a bit.

Maura huffed. "Museums?" she joined the banter knowing that they needed it. "Yes. There is a small artists colony on the way. One can visit them. They have a small art exhibition." Jane proudly stated and Maura cried again. "Oh, come on baby. Don't cry on me. Otherwise, I have to cry again too." Jane stated with a crooked grin while holding up Maura's chin to lock eyes.

"I can't help it sorry. But you are the best wife. I love you so much."

Jane didn't know why, but it felt like the end of the world and it was somehow. It was the end of their world in which nothing ever happened to them and they would live their happily ever after. She was aware that it was ridiculous as Maura had a chance to fight. She had a real chance to overcome it according to the doctors.

Still it felt like saying goodbye although the verdict hadn't been spoken yet. And as stupid as it seemed, it also seemed to be a notion they had to go through. Because just like the doctor had pointed out: there was no guarantee in life.

They spent the rest of the night holding each other and talking. When the morning arrived, they watched the sunrise. The girls arrived around 9am with flowers, chocolate, and Croissants. With Maura being awake they felt lighter and Jane stayed for a while to chat before taking her turn to return home and shower and get some rest.

The girls had already informed their school that they wouldn't be attending classes this day. And Jane confirmed that there had been an emergency in the family to legitimate their absence. She talked to the principal about taking the girls out of the school earlier and he confirmed that if they finished their last open tests, they could finish their schoolyear without attending classes.

He also confirmed that it would be possible to do the tests in a distance learning modus and Jane felt relieved when hanging up. The girls were good at school and she had no doubt that it would cause them any troubles to learn by themselves. They had proven their maturity a lot within the last days by handling all the troubles without problems.

Will had been taken care of all the time without any of the parents pushing them. She glanced at him as he sat bathed and fed in front of her. She smiled when seeing that they had cooked for him. The leftovers were still on the kitchen counter with a note that Jane could feed him the rest later. She dipped the spoon into the curious looking dish and tasted it. "This is really good." She mumbled to Will who giggled.

A car was stopped in the driveway and soon after Jane found Angela standing on the doorstep. "Frankie is going to take care of Buddy and Bass. How's Maura?" the matriarch said, and Jane moved into her arms.

"I see." Angela mumbled into her dark curls. They ended up in the kitchen were Jane told her everything while cleaning everything away. Angela helped her, listening in silence with a serious face.

"I think Maura will be released tomorrow. I'm going to take her home and help her with packing the stuff she needs. We are going to drive to Boston then." Jane informed her mother. "Maybe you could follow with the girls? By the end of the week or so? We wanted to take Maura's Prius with us but that's not important. We can fetch it another time."

Organizing everything was her job and she was fine. But she needed the help of her mother and the others to work through the plans.

She was surprised though as how sweet everybody supported her and followed her orders. Once showered she found some rest while Angela was looking after Will.

R&I

When she woke up, she felt better and more optimistic. She raised from the bed and got dressed and padded downstairs to find Maura resting on the couch.

"Hey." She greeted the doc with a smile. "Already released?" she asked after a quick kiss.

"She asked us to bring her home." Sophie stated as she came into the room with a bowl of Angela's famous chicken soup.

"But the doctor released you right?" Jane asked confused and Maura blushed slightly.

"I signed the papers that I can take care of myself and that I know about the risks."

"But Maur! Weren't you always the one who scolded me for doing so?!" Jane exclaimed and Maura made a faint waving emotion. "This is different." She explained and Jane helped her to sit up in order to eat the soup.

"Different how?" Janes eyes narrowed to slits. Having Maura at home was good thing. They fell back into some banter as Maura explained that she was a doctor herself. "Aha?!" Jane said and Sophie chuckled. Her parents had been like that all her live and she saw how they loved each other.

"I need to pack. The sooner we start the treatment, the better." Maura stated and the light air suddenly changed into the seriousness that were weighing them down. "If we drive off tomorrow morning we can be in Boston by the evening." Jane swallowed.

"What if its to fast for you Maur? We need to be careful. Why not stay one night in a hotel?"

Maura swallowed hard. "Jane, I have a brain tumor in my head. It doesn't belong there. I want to have it out as soon as possible. We can still have our road trip then." The doc sternly said almost hysteric.
