Once Jane had cut the engine upon arriving at their home, the door flew open and all kids ran towards the car. Angela was holding Will in her arms and was a bit slower. But Maura needed time to get out of the car anyway. The last days had been exhausting to her but it didn't stop her from smiling widely when the girls came to greet her with a strong hug.
It was the first time they got to see her in days and Jane could see that they had all been worried sick. Seeing Maura seizure had done something to them and visibly had also taken some of their teenager-lightness. It seemed to help though when they realized that Maura was still her old self.
Jane gave them the time needed to express their feelings and silently greeted her mother and Will before taking Maura's suitcase out of the trunk to bring it into the house. She smiled as she returned back to the porch to see that they were all hugging Maura at the same time.
"Hey, maybe you let mommy come in and sit down." She yelled laughing and earned a protest of Maura who stated that she wasn't disabled. This was definitely a fragile point and Jane made a mental note to be more careful with her jokes.
Once inside Maura was hoovered by three busy teenagers who served her food, water and whatever they thought the doc was craving. Despite Jane bringing her wife some homecooked food from Angela each day, Maura was hungry and dug in. Very much to Janes pleasure who carefully tasted her mother's latest creation.
Angela had decided to enlarge her horizon by buying a book with new recipes. The title said: Asian cuisine easily cooked. She scrunched up her nose and took a bite. To her surprise it tasted delicious.
"Ma, that's great!" she exclaimed very much to Angela's pleasure who gave her a smile. It didn't take long for the family to fall in their usual loud talk and banter as if everything was okay. There was a point when Jane leaned back and just watched them all. Maura was feeding will tiny bits of the glass noodles, the girls were teasing each other, and her mother tried to talk with Maura about Wills food.
The brunette was happy. The fact that Maura's cancer was treatable was a ray of light. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad she decided to herself and gave her wife a reassuring smile before deflecting Angela's attention away from her wife.
Maura gave her a grateful smile and she returned it without hesitation. For the first time in over a week some kind of normality returned upon the Rizzoli – Isles household which made Jane relax into the evening.
She helped her mother clean up the kitchen while the kids gathered with Maura in the living room to watch a movie. As the evening proceeded though, the girls vanished and hence, Jane found herself sitting on the couch alone with Maura.
Taking the docs hand and leading it to her mouth for a kiss she grinned proudly. "We have great kids." She murmured and the doc agreed. "Yes, we are very lucky."
"Remember when we decided to get together? We said that this was going to be the hell of a ride with two teenagers the same age." Jane paused and waited for Maura to nod. "We were wrong. Its not so bad after all. See, now we have three of them and a toddler and everything is fine. I can't believe how sweet they are."
"Don't jinx it." Maura said in a warning tone, rolling her eyes. Jane laughed and opened her arms for Maura to snuggle against her. "You are right. I will say no more." Both sighed. Jane agreed to watch a documentary called planet earth, trying to make Maura as comfortable as possible. The doc still had her outbursts of anger, but they had somehow learned to live with it.
For now, Maura was happy and relaxed. Not even five minutes into the documentary Jane could hear the soft snoring which told her that Maura had already passed out. No wonder she mused after being tortured with various exams over a week and a dreadful hospital bed. But Maura was home now, and it gave Jane a sense of completeness she only got when being close to her wife.
After waiting for ten more minutes, she reached for the remote which proved to be a difficult taskt, seen as to how it lay on the other side of Maura and she didn't want to wake the blonde. But she managed thanks to her long arms and fingers to finally grab it.
She switched to a football game and watched in silent, feeling content and optimistic. When she heard a noise from the kitchen, she turned her head. Sophie was getting herself some ice cream. They smiled at each other over the kitchen counter before the girl disappeared again into her room.
Or rather into Julia's and Amanda's by the sound of the three giggling. Jane smiled to herself. Life was maybe not perfect, and she didn't doubt for one second that the path which lay ahead of them was going to be rocky and hard. But it had its moments.
Buddy was laying on her side and snoring. Maura was snoring in her arms. Jane suddenly found it difficult to stay awake herself. This was the dreadful moment that she craved bed before her teenagers did as she realized when pondering the question whether to stay up until they slept or just wishing them a good night and going to bed to have some needed rest.
She decided for the latter and gently shifted Maura into her arms, bringing her to bed first. The blonde wrapped her arms around Janes neck as she carried her upstairs before checking on Will who was sleeping peacefully. Then she checked on Bass, feeding him a strawberry while patting his shell. They had actually become friends and his look at her wasn't that grumpy anymore. No wonder seen as she bribed him each night with his favorite fruit.
Her last stop before going to bed herself was Julia's room, where the girls were sitting on the bed and playing cards. She wished them a good night after making sure that they were alright and reminded them to go to bed before midnight. There was homeschooling from now on and she also reminded them to take it seriously. After she had made them roll their eyes and huff, she walked back into the master bedroom with a grin.
Just like they sometimes had to be real teenagers she sometimes needed to act like a mother. Maura was asleep and she settled between the sheets and rolled over to wrap her arms around her. Perfect she thought with a sigh before drifting off herself. Hoping that the girls would take her advice serious but honestly, she was too exhausted to stay up and check.
They had one day before chemotherapy would start. It was Sunday and life was almost normal. Maura reading her journals in Janes lap while the brunette was watching a game with Sophie who had recently developed an interest in football. Julia and Amanda had gone for a walk and Will was playing on the rug with his toy cars.
Jane silently checked on Maura every five minutes just to make sure that she was okay. Until Maura mentioned that she felt observed and that it made her nervous. Jane scoffed and denied having stared at her and Maura gave her the "seriously Jane?" glare which made Jane laugh.
"Okay. I'm sorry. I just want you to feel comfortable."
"Then you should stop watching me." Maura stated with a grin, her eyes fixed on the article.
"Okay. I will." Jane replied and refocused on the screen, fighting the urge to take another glance into her lap.
