Epilog Too
June 1927
Alex and Clara Butler were cleaning out their home. It had been Alex's parent's home but Clara had loved it so they had never moved out. They had done some redecorating after Alex's mother had passed away but they hadn't made any major changes to the décor.
They were selling the house. They were going to move to Boston where their son had a house. Most of Alex's business contacts were there too. They had been talking about it ever since their son had gotten married three years ago. Their son, Rhett and his wife, Scarlett, rarely came to Hartford. They had a house in Boston but they were rarely there either. The couple traveled the world. Even Scarlett getting pregnant had not slowed down their traveling ways. They were in Paris right now waiting for the arrival of their first child.
Clara had always thought her son's relationship with her daughter-in-law a little odd. They had met when Rhett was ten and Scarlett had been two and a half. There had been an instant connection between the two according to Alex. Clara didn't know about that but her son would ask his father to take him with him every time Alex went to Boston. Alex was so soft hearted that, of course, he did.
Alex had said that the first several times that he had dropped Rhett off to visit with the girl her parents had been very leery about allowing Rhett time with their daughter. Alex had said that if Mr. O'Hara hadn't been afraid of him pulling his financial help the O'Haras probably would not have allowed Rhett to visit. Alex also said that he believed the thing that swayed the O'Haras the most was how very excited their daughter got every time Rhett would visit her. That and 'Rhett' being one of the girl's first words. Also, how respectful Rhett was to Mr. and Mrs. O'Hara helped according to Alex. Rhett visited with the girl every three to four months. Rhett would spend the morning the O'Haras. The only way to describe Rhett's expression after these visits was blissful.
There was one time when Alex had been very busy with some critical business deals and hadn't been able to go to Boston for over three months, that Rhett at age twelve had begged her to take him to Boston for the day. As far as Rhett was concerned, she guessed she was as soft-hearted as Alex. They had taken the train the two hours to Boston and spent the night with her brother-in-law Wade, taken Rhett over to see Scarlett for the morning and then taken the train home after dinner when Scarlett went down for her afternoon nap.
Clara did remember that she could see the bond between her son and the little girl. It was plain to see that they loved each other very much but there was a wholesomeness to the relationship. It was that wholesomeness that allowed the parents peace about the relationship.
Despite how odd their relationship had been before they married, Clara could not argue that her son and his wife were very much in love. Rhett had promised his father that when he turned thirty, he would settle down and start working with his father managing their fortune. Clara thought it was strange that her son married a girl named Scarlett. That had been Alex's parents' names, Rhett and Scarlett.
Clara had never cleaned out her mother-in-law's room after she died. She and Alex had been happy in their room upstairs. It had been close to Rhett. She had gotten rid of their clothes and their jewelry. She had kept the pieces she liked but her mother-in-law had a lot of jewelry. She had mentioned to Alex that she was surprised at how much jewelry her mother-in-law had when she really didn't wear that much.
Alex had laughed and said, "Papa bought Mama jewelry every time he made her mad."
Clara had said, "He must have made her mad a lot."
Alex had smiled and said, "All the time. Most of the time on purpose. Papa told me once, 'Your mother is one hell of a woman when she has her Irish up.' Yet no matter what they always made up."
As they were packing up the house, Clara had found a journal written by her mother-in-law. Once she started reading it, she hadn't been able to put it down. It was an incredible story. She had made Alex read it. He too had not been able to put it down.
When Alex was finished with the journal, he said, "I guess some of this is true. Mama and Papa never really liked talking about the war years. I know neither would ever talk about the year after the war ended. They would talk about the years after they got married but they rarely talked about anything before then. I know none of this after they got married is true. Mama and Papa would never treat each other that way."
"I have a cousin who lives in Atlanta. You remember her, Margaret Mitchell. She has broken her ankle and had to quit her job. Let's send her the journal and maybe she can turn it into a novel."
"I'm alright with that but she has to say she made everything up. I don't want anyone thinking this is true. I don't want anyone thinking that my parents would behave that way."
"I will send it to her tomorrow."
"We get half of the royalties."
June 1937
A very pregnant Scarlett walked into her home in Boston and found her husband in the parlor. She said, "This is the last one, Rhett, girl or no girl. I am not going to get pregnant a fifth time."
"Of course, my love, but accidents do happen. When I am with you, I forget everything but you."
Scarlett looked at her husband and said, "Liar, liar pants on fire. You knew exactly what you were doing when you convinced me to have another one. And don't give me that 'Who me expression."
She had a book in her hand. It was titled Gone with the Wind. She laid the book on the coffee table.
Rhett not being foolish Rhett changed the subject and said, "What is that?"
Scarlett said, "It is our story. Don't you remember your mother telling us about sending my journals to her cousin.
"Yes, I remember. Why did you not destroy the journal?"
"I never thought anyone would publish it into a novel."
"We were fascinating people. We still are."
Scarlet smiled and said, "Actually, it is our first story. It is a best seller. They are going to make it into a movie. They say Clark Gable is going to play the role of Rhett Butler," Scarlett watched as her husband preened. "Or was it Groucho Marx."
Rhett smiled broader.
She continued, "I don't like the way they portrayed Melly, like she was perfect."
"She was perfect until she started living with us."
"Do you think she didn't come back or we haven't found her?"
"You know she didn't come back. She chose to stay on the other side with Ashley. Remember that dream we had."
Scarlett had a look of disgust on her face. She said with a pout, "Yes."
Rhett smiled and said, "It was terribly selfish of her to choose to spend eternity with her true love instead of with us.
Scarlett sighed and ignored her husband's jab. She sat down next to him on the sofa and said, "Although I wouldn't want her to read about what a horrible person I was to her."
"Knowing our sweet Melanie, she would find a way to justify what you did."
"I miss her."
"You have other friends."
"Yes, but they aren't Melly. Did you ask your mother about my ring?"
Rhett smiled at his soulmate and said, "Yes. She said you can have it once she passes away."
"That long. I should never have given it to Alex to give to her as an engagement ring."
"It was a wonderful thing you did. It may be the one altruistic thing either one of us has ever done. Besides you made Alex and Clara very happy at the time."
Scarlett brightened and said, "Yes I did."
"You will get it back eventually. You will get all of my mother's jewelry when she passes."
"Although she did sell most of the best pieces."
"That's true. She did keep your more tasteful engagement ring which is on your finger right now. That should appease your greedy little heart."
Scarlett pouted. Rhett looked at her with his knowing smile. She shoved the book. She said, "I wish Margaret had at least changed our names although, I read she was thinking of calling me Pansy. I wouldn't have liked that."
"No, you are not a Pansy. Scarlett is the only name that fits you."
She smiled at Rhett. He could be so sweet sometimes. She said, "I don't like the ending. They leave it at the point where Melanie dies. There is no resolution."
"That is your fault. You didn't write an ending."
"I couldn't write down all the foolish things we had done after Melanie died."
Rhett smiled and said, "But you could write down all the foolish things we did before Melanie died."
"It helped me sleep. I missed your stories."
"I can't sleep without you either," Then he kissed her. "Honey, it isn't our story. It is two foolish, proud, arrogant, stupid people's story."
"You are right."
"I thought we had established I am always right."
"Not always. Would you like me to give you some examples?"
Rhett smiled and wrapped his arms around his wonderful wife. He said, "No thank you."
It was a very old joke but they both still enjoyed it.
Author's Notes: Thanks to all the readers requesting I add more to this story, I have plans to come back to this story. I shall continue the Adventures of Scarlett and Rhett – Reincarnated. Just think about it. The Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, World War II, The Fifties, The Sexual Revolution in the Sixties. And on and on. As one of my reviewers said, 'Can you imagine Rhett teaching Scarlett how to drive a car?'
FYI: When cars were first being sold the only lessons people got was from the salesman. Egad!
I have had Rhett in a house full of females time after time. It is time he was in a house full of males and Scarlett can rule as the Queen Bee.
