Author's Note:
Let's get the boring bit out of the way. With this marking the end of Johto, I want to give some statistics. I was able to write a collective of 340,758 words since the two year anniversary totaling at 31 chapters. This is the least amount over the three years of writing Johto but that's more because the series is coming to an end. I even finished a couple weeks ahead of schedule. Hoenn is the same length in terms of a plan but with the improvements I made over course of writing this region, I think I can also improve my speed. No promises but here's hoping. With Johto being a total of 1111,000 words and 100 chapters. When adding all three of the beginning arcs together, each chapter has an average word count of 9,951 (rounded down), while in Johto imparticular, it has an average word count of 11,110. I don't plan on increasing it, as its a nice counter. Even if it falled back, I would be fine as length doesn't eaqual quality.
Now onto the thoughts of how Johto turned out. When I started this arc, I was still a young and naive writter with a billion and one plans and I have hopefully refined my style and my process. There are some chapters, looking back, that make me wish I did them differently. While I doubt that will disappear completely, I do hope to lower the amount of chapters. I am incredibly happy with the characters this produced, from the Pokemon being accurate to their anime counter parts, like Meganium, Croconaw and others. While some of the ones that are my self creation I feel would've fitted in well in the actual show. Pokemon like Houndoom, Stantler and Marill. I was happy with how some of the arcs turned out, especially the lake of rage arc. It was the main thing I was writing and while not everyone was happy with the turn Gyarados took, I am happy how it turned and and those chapters are still my favourite of what I've written. Again, I hope to continue this trend as we move to Hoenn. I will also say that we are now moving into the middle section of my series. This section will be a lot longer than the starting one but I am all for it. I did consider it giving up at one point but I passed it, after coming this far I am ready to complete it and I won't be stopping so I hope your all on the journey with me. With all that, all I can say is thank you all for the support during Johto and here's looking forward to Hoenn and beyond!
Here it is, the final chapter of Johto and just me wrapping up every loose end. Getting ready for the move to Hoenn. Hope you enjoy this wrap up of Johto and are excited for Hoenn, I know I am. I was able to complete this arc within three years and considering much bigger I made it compared to the other two, I feel that was a good time frame. Its also the largest in terms of both words and chapters and has truly been fun. Don't forget to vote in the poll, which will change when we start our Hoenn adventure and with that, let's being...
Chapter 100: Gotta Catch Ya, Later
Staring out of the window, he the night sky alight with the moon and stars. A couple flying Pokemon, possibly Murkrow, went flying away as he heard the gentle tweets from some nearby Hoothoot. A cool breeze filled the outside world, not that he noticed it thanks to the quilt covers he had wrapped himself in and his mind, despite the serene enviorment he was looking at, was focused on anything but...
A rerun of his battle with Paul kept him up. The state his team was left in, even if he called it off for Togetic's sake, he should've done it long before. None of his team deserved it and while he warned Harrison not to underestimate his opponent, he made the same short comings. He was so certain he knew the purple haired trainer so well, that he forgot Paul also knew him. Clearly he knew him better. Heh, he never prioritised even trying to change the Pallet's natives views but he handed him the perfect oppotunity to do so, just by proving his point. That battle was not worthy of being the finals in a league.
Ash felt a weight on him, and he was brought back to reality. He was dressed in his pyjama top and shorts, lying on the bed in the Pokémon centre at silver town. He not long got back from the closing ceremony and was just staring out of the window into the night sky.
Turning to the side, he saw Serena lying down in her own pyjama's. She was trapping one of his arms behind her and half sat up. Her hair was up in a ponytail to the back. He couldn't help but smile at her as she returned the gesture. Sighing, he turned to face the wall where the television was on, playing a repeat of the closing ceremony. Seeing his purple haired rival holding the trophy from Ethan and President Goodshow.
"Don't worry about that," she placed a hand on his cheek, turning his head towards her, "tomorrow we'll be back in Pallet and he'll be off who knows where and we won't need to worry about him again."
"You sound certain," he smiled.
"Oh, I am. Didn't I tell you, I can see the future," she giggled, "yeah, it's a new ability of my esp."
"Really?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow up, "so my girlfriend learnt future sight."
"Yep," she replied, "and in the future, I see us travelling through Hoenn. Having fun and just a generally happy time... and it starts right now, actually."
He smiled and leaned towards her, having guessed what she was getting at. He pecked her lips a couple times before she pulled back, not letting him get to into the moment. Quirking his eyebrow up in confuse, she never really had issues with making out before.
"Down boy," she whispered, in a voice that increased his heart rate. She turned around and pulled a white bag up from the floor. Opening it to reveal a tub of ice cream with a couple of spoons, "this helped Leaf when she was in her depressed mood, so I thought..."
"I like the way you think," Ash smiled, pecking her cheek as she snuggled into a more comfortable position. She lifted the lid off, revealing mint choc chip. He took one of the spoons scooped out some from the tub. Moving it towards his lips, he found a finger blocking him from inhaling the frozen desert, "huh?"
"Hold on, Ashy," she replied.
Using her hand to gently guild the spoon in his hand. She opened her mouth and took in the treat herself. As she did, she took the other spoon and used it to scope out some ice cream herself. She moved it towards his mouth. Taking the cue, he opened his mouth and took the spoonful himself. They took this in turns feeding each other and just enjoying them brace, as they watched repeats of the league. Particularly the battle between Gary and Harrison for third place in the tournament. He couldn't stop himself smiling as he took in another spoon of the frozen desert.
"So where did you come up with this idea?" he asked, swallowing the sweet treat, "us feeding each other."
"It's a signature of romance movies," she smiled coyly, taking the spoonful he scooped out. Swallowing it, "so... how are you feeling?"
"I'm good," he lied.
"Come on, tell me," she encouraged, "I know you and while you aren't that fussed about losing, the fact it was too Paul-"
"I'm not upset about losing," he sighed. He felt a hand on his cheek, forcing him to look towards her. Seeing the look in her wide eyes, glistening with the light from the television bouncing off them.
"Then tell me what's going on," she pleaded, "tell me what's going on in that handsome head of yours."
"Alright..." he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, "it's not that I'm upset over losing. I would rather lose a good battle than win a one-sided beat down."
"As if I don't already know that," she shook her head, "you practically beat yourself up like you took on Aerodactyl yourself after the match with Vincent."
"So... I shouldn't have put them through that," Ash sighed, "after Torterra, it was clear he was going to win... Blastoise, Pikachu, everyone would be better off if I called the battle then and there. I don't know how I'll ever make it up to them."
"Don't be silly, Ash," she replied, "everyone battled with there all and it's because they all believe in you. Your their friend and that's why they battled."
"Exactly," he sighed, "and then there's the thing Paul said... at the closing ceremony."
"Okay, what did he say?" she asked.
"He made a point about the audience, how the league isn't some sort of fairy tale," he sighed, "the audience made it no secret he was unpopular and even the announcers got in on that narrative but despite being the villain of the story... he won."
"Ash, life isn't some sort of fairy tale," Serena shook her head, "and Paul will get what's coming to him, eventually."
"Yeah... I just hope the others see it that way," he sighed, "I can't imagine Pikachu being happy about spending the night in one of those medical rooms again. He is probably all frustrated with nothing else to do."
"I wouldn't worry about them, they all love a good battle as much as you do," she smiled, putting the lid on the mostly empty tub and back in the bag along with the cutlery. Sliding it off to the floor in front of the bedside table, "and as for Pikachu... Sylveon decided to spend the night in the room with him so I don't think he'll be all that upset... she mentioned keeping him entertained after his hard-fought battles... so we have the room to ourselves."
The two inched closer and closer, before their lips connected. His hands found themselves running through her hair. They briefly parted as his hands moved down to her waist, hoisting her up on top of him as he sunk into the middle of their bed. She placed her hands on his shirt, scrunching it up in her fists as she pulled him towards her. Connecting their lips once more with, filled with passion and desire.
His hands tried to join in the rhyme, reaching back for her waist but she quickly grabbed a hold of them, forcing them above his head. With her silent instructions clear, he just continued returning the small gestures on his lips as she laid them both back down. He felt her hand reach the bottom of his shirt again, flirting with the idea of lifting it up... when-
"Wait..." he spoke, feeling her hand slide down and away from his stomach. Looking into her big blue eyes, he saw her asking why, with concern over if she went too far. She was always... passionate, in their alone time but after the date a few nights ago, it's like she has stepped it up a level. Her eyes widened and pupils dilated, as panic began to raise in them. Realising the cause, he continue "what did you mean that Sylveon will be keeping him entertained tonight?"
She went to answer, but no sound came out her mouth. Her mouth slowly closed as her eyes widened. Placing a hand over her throat, she heaved a couple of times and rolled off onto the side of the bed. A clear gap between them as she curled up into a ball.
"Mood killer?" they both asked at the same time.
While he wanted to chuckle at the accidental confession and question, he couldn't bring himself to do it. He knew Pokémon moved faster in relationships than humans did, and he wasn't the most knowledgeable on the subject matter... but even he knew what his starter Pokémon was probably doing with his girlfriend and honestly... he really didn't want to think about it. He loves Serena and of course, their make out sessions can become heated, but they aren't even close to taking that step.
Just the thought made him shiver.
Grabbing the remote, he skipped through the channels, coming to a replay of the indigo league. That finished the week before the Silver conference started but he hardly had chance to catch up on it. As the final match of the conference commenced, he was surprised to see a familiar face on the score board. It was an old friend he met back in Kanto... Ritchie. He wasn't sure why he decided to take on the same league again but to each their own.
He really got into the battle which seemed a back and forth each round. He had to admit, the opponent was very respectful, and he could imagine it being fun in that sort of match up. It seemed similar to his battle with Gary, even if they don't share the familiarity.
Eventually, the battle came to an end with Ritchie receiving second place. While he was sad for his friend and rival, he couldn't say the opponent was undeserving by any means and looking at the interaction post battle, even the young teen cradling Sparky in his arms seemed to show pride for his opponent. A far cry from his battle with Paul. It would be nice to see the young man again but that isn't very likely.
Reaching for the remote, he used it to turn the device off. Turning to the side, he saw Serena already asleep on her side and facing away from him. Using the switch on the wall on his side of the bed, he used it to turn off the remaining lights in the room. Careful not to disturb his sleeping beauty, he pulled the covers up, so they were both nicely tucked in. Sliding across, her back hit his chest and one of his arms wrapped around her stomach, pulling her into a close embrace. His other arm working its way under her pillow, careful not to disturb.
Taking in the scent of her hair, he relaxed and closed his eyes. Even if upset over the outcome, he will just need to try harder in Hoenn... after all, they don't give up until it's over.
She stared into the mirror in front of her. Raising a hand, she adjusted the golden-frame glasses slightly. It hardly suited her current outfit but when she came imagined her new one for Hoenn, they worked even better than first thought.
It was quite amazing actually, before putting them on she didn't feel like she really needed them all that much. However, when she did, it was like the world was turned into high definition. Seeing out the edge, it was incredible the difference which she wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
"How do they feel?" the assistance asked, who gave her the specs.
"They feel fine, thank you," she smiled towards the female worker. It wasn't the same one who helped her pick them out back when she had the test done but everyone that she experienced in the store had been super nice and helpful. Taking away a lot of the pressure and anxieties that she would've felt otherwise.
"Well if you start to feel them coming lose or they become damaged. Feel free to stop by here or one of our other branches which is closer," the assistant explained, "we'll be sending a letter out to your home address in Pallet when it's time for another test so you can arrange an appointment then."
"Thank you... again," she smiled, "you've all made this super easy and streamlined."
"Your welcome," she replied, "but we're just doing our jobs. We're always happy to help. Have a nice day."
"You too," Serena replied.
Taking one last look in the mirror, she took a deep breath and forced a smile on her face. Her friends were waiting outside the store for her and this would be the first time they see her in the glasses. With her heart pounding against her chest, she knew it would only get worse the longer she waited and if she took too long, then they might panic themselves. Without a second hesitation, she turned towards the main entrance and began to walk.
Pushing the door open, she stepped outside. The bright sun glaring through her new lens, she raised an arm to try and block it. Squinting through the blur, she looked ahead towards a group of her friend. Ash, Misty, and Brock were stood in a circle. Sylveon and Pikachu were on the floor, after picking them up from the medical bay along with the rest of Ash's team, the thoughts about their activities last night rushed back needless to say, Ash was less than thrilled at the thought of the little guy riding on his shoulder. While Misty had her Marill wrapped tightly in her arms and Brock had Delibird riding on his shoulder.
She took another quick, deep breath and made her way over to them. The first one she noticed was Sylveon, who smiled in her direction, holding a feeler out which she gladly accepted. Wrapping it around her head as she came to a stop.
Her eyes flicked across to see everyone's reaction. Misty offered a kind and supporting smile, as her water fairy held her arms up in a sort of celebration. Next, she saw Brock, he was rubbing his chin with a thoughtful look on his face but when their eyes met, he too offered a friendly smile and reassuring nod of his head. Wanting to save, hopefully, the best for last, she glanced down to the two Pokémon. Sylveon was looking up with a hard stare and determined look, when asking her through her ESP she had nothing but appraisal for the new look... while Pikachu placed two fingers in his mouth and performed, what Serena came to know of as a Lycanroc whistle. While she never met a Lycanroc before, she knew from television shows and movies that it was a way for men to catch female attention. The typical scenario being that of building on a work site using it to call out to a women passing by.
Almost laughing at the playful and over the top reaction of the electric mouse, she took a deep breath and straightened her expression out. Forcing her eyes to move upwards and to the side, they finally locked with Ash's.
"W-whoa," he stuttered.
His eyes were wide and mouth semi-open. It looked like he wanted to bite his lip but also have his jaw drop, so it was stuck in some sort of uncomfortable middle ground. Happy with his reaction, at least he still finds her attractive if those two reactions were anything to go by, she stepped forward and embraced him in a hug. While he reassured her the night she confessed on their date, this was the true moment that weight was lifted of her shoulders.
"Thank you," she whispered in his ear. Pulling back from the embrace, she scanned the others once more, "so what do ya'll think?"
"They look great, Serena," Misty offered the first response, "but then again, ever since I met you, you've known what's stylish and not. Almost sad that I won't be able to pick your brain for tips on outfits to wear when I meet back up with Rudy."
"You won't need anything special," she replied, "he'll just be happy to see you again."
"Thanks," the water type specialist smiled.
Turning towards the side, she spoke again, "and what about you, Brock?"
"I thought it went without saying," he offered a friendly chuckle to lighten the mood, "but they really do suit you, Serena. It also makes you look more mature."
"If that's the case," Misty drew her attention once more, "maybe you could get some of that to rub off on Ash. We all know when it comes to maturity that he needs all the help he can get."
"Hey!" he cried out.
"Well come on guys," Brock stepped forward, shaking his head as he tried to contain his laughter, "you wanted to see Jimmy and Marina off, right?"
"Of course!" Serena beamed, "but what do you think, Ash?"
"They look great, you look great," he stuttered, "t-they really make you look smart and, yeah."
"Wow, what a way to say you thought she looked dumb before," Misty joked, "I know she's blonde but even I wouldn't go that far."
"I-I didn't mean it like that!" he cried out, "I just meant-"
She stopped laughing and looped her arms around his neck. Pecking his lips to stop his stuttering, "its okay Ash, Misty was just joking."
"And I can't actually take credit for the joke," the water type specialist added, "Pikachu wrote it down on a piece of paper. In case you used the word smart in your description of her glasses."
"Hehehe," she chuckled lightly, "she asked me if it was alright before hand. I thought it would be pretty funny so told her to go for it. Anyway, shouldn't we head off, don't want to keep Marina and Jimmy waiting."
As they walked down the path towards the edge of town, Serena couldn't help but look around at the passers-by. A few were ignoring them and continuing on with their day, but a few seemed to notice them and were even whispering about recognising them. She knew she shouldn't eavesdrop, but she couldn't help it.
While a small part of her was concerned it was her new accessory on her face that was drawing their attention, from what she heard it was mostly because of her achievement in the grand festival and Ash's second place achievement in the league. It was a weird feeling, to know they were somewhat famous but that was probably just because of still being in Johto. They probably won't receive such recognition in Hoenn or anywhere else... right?
As they came towards the edge of town, they found Jimmy and Marina stood by themselves, just chatting. They had Typhlosion and Croconaw out respectively, who seemed to be having their own conversation. The blue haired girl noticed them a gave a big wave, which Serena returned in a more tame manner. They came to stop just in front of them.
"Oh my gosh, darlings! I didn't think you'd make it," she gushed, embracing the honey-blonde girl in a tight embrace, which she returned, "you have glasses?"
"Oh yeah," she chuckled nervously, "just picked them up, actually. Whatcha think?"
"They look absolutely fabulous, darling!" Marina exclaimed, "totally suit you and frame your blue eyes perfectly."
"Thanks Marina," she smiled, letting out a sigh as the weight of what was happening hit her, "so... I guess this is it. You're going back to New Bark?"
"Yeah... my dad said he's throwing a street party for making it into the top eight," Jimmy stepped forward, "even Ethan said he'd be joining us."
"You don't sound too thrilled about that," Misty noted.
"I love my brother, I really do," Jimmy explained, "but... but he's the champion. Wherever he goes, people recognising him and is the centre of attention. It's a little intimidating, being the centre of attention and all that. It's just... not for me."
"You was alright down on the field," Marina interjected, a coy smile over taking her lips.
"That's different," he sighed, "in the heat of battle, everything and everyone else just disappears. Leaving you and your opponent."
"He's right," Ash added, "so do you guys know where your heading next?"
"Well... we've decided to go to Kanto next," Marina admitted, "I know your heading off to, was it Hoenn? But we need a fresh start, somewhere we can be just Jimmy and Marina. Not the brother of Johto's champion or Johto's super star sister. So, we're heading off to Kanto."
"You guys won't be there, and neither is Vincent," Jimmy explained, "and so we can just compete. Without the pressure of our siblings looming over us."
"That's great," Misty pipped up, "I assume you'll be doing the gym challenge again."
"Sure am," Jimmy smiled.
"Then why not leave the Cerulean gym for a few months," she offered, "you see, it's my sixteenth in about five months and then I'm taking over the place from my sisters. It'll be nice to have a familiar face for my first challenge."
"I don't-"
"We'd love to, darling!" Marina cut him off, "why don't we swap numbers so we can be sure to visit when you're ready."
The two trainers smiled and exchanged the contact details. Serena couldn't help but sigh at the sight. While they only met them when they started their adventures in Johto, it feels like years they've known them. It's going to be tough saying goodbye to all these friends but what can they do? As long as they keep striving and pushing themselves forward, surely, they'd meet again at some point.
"So, what will you be doing in Kanto, Marina?" she asked.
"I'll be partaking in showcases," she beamed, "after the grand festival, that women Palermo spoke to me. She told me that she saw a natural for the stage and encouraged me to give them a shot. While I love contests and want that top coordinator title, I have to admit I do love the idea of being Kanto's first showcase queen."
"Good luck," she smiled, "I know you'll do great. You're a natural for the stage."
"So, you said that part of the reason you was going to Kanto was because Vincent wasn't?" Brock asked.
"Right," Jimmy sighed, "while he was once a friend, he's made it clear that our friendship is over."
"He also offered me an ultimatum," Marina added, "he said he was heading to Sinnoh next. So, if I changed my mind, then I'd know where to find him."
"After everything he's done and acted... we decided it was best to cut him out of our lives," Jimmy finished, "it's a shame because we were friends once but sometimes people change... and so we want to cut that bandaid off now before it gets even worst."
They spent a couple more minutes before an alert went off on Serena's Pokegear. Checking it out, she saw it was message from her cousin, asking to meet before they set off once more. Realising she didn't want to leave without seeing him... or Miette either, they bid one last goodbye to the Johto trainers. Waiting until they were out of sight before heading off towards the other two trainers.
She lead the group this time, her Pokegear still out as she messaged back and forth with her cousin. They soon came to a clearing by the lake where the two Kalos natives were stood. Seeing them approaching, they walked towards them as well. Putting her device away, she greeted her cousin with a hug.
"Hey cus, glad to see ya," he smiled, quickly returning the embrace before turning towards the others, "and you guys too."
"Same," Ash added, with the others adding in their own agreement, "so do you guys know where you're going next?"
"Sure do," Miette smiled, "we're off to Sinnoh next."
"Sinnoh?" Brock asked.
"Well first we'll be returning to Kalos, see our folks and all that stuff," Calem explained, "we have a flight booked from Violet city airport tomorrow morning."
"What will ya'll be doing in Sinnoh?" Ash asked, "the league again?"
"Not this time," Calem sighed, "I realised after my battle with Harrison, that I really didn't care I lost. I didn't find the same enjoyment in the league that I once did."
"So, what will you be doing instead?" Serena asked.
"Well first off, I'm going to become the first Sinnoh showcase queen," Miette interjected.
"You seem confident," Ash commented.
"You've seen me on stage, Ashy," she replied, with a flirty undertone. Adding in a wink for good measure.
Seeing him stutter some incoherent nonsense as he blushed and stepped back, did cause a chuckle in Serena. While she knows the bluenette is playing with them, it's nice to see someone else like that after how often she got caught off guard by her.
"So Cuz, what will you be doing?" she asked.
"I've got a position as a research assistant for Sinnoh's region professor," he shrugged, "I performed a similar role for Kalos' regional Professor before heading off towards Kanto. It'll be nice to getting back into the research side of Pokémon. It's always nice to learn more."
"I'm glad you'll be up to something that means so much to you," Serena smiled, "but I'll miss not running into you every so often."
"I will too, cus," he smiled, "but you don't need me watching over your shoulder. And besides, we still have each other's numbers so we can stay in touch."
"Yeah, your right," she sighed, "will you tell Aunt Hope I say hi when you stop off in Kalos though? It's been years since I've last seen her, in person at least."
"Of course, I will," he replied, "as long as you tell Aunt Grace, I said hi as well."
"Grace, Hope," Misty listed, "just missing Joy for the trifecta."
"I don't think we're related to a nurse," Calem joked, "then again, Nurse Joy is more of their rank as head of a Pokémon rather than their actual name."
"It's nice to know that wherever we go, there is a Nurse Joy able to help us and our Pokémon," Ash added, "it's sort of like how Officer Jenny is a rank instead of just multiple of the same person. It makes it easier to trust them, even if we've never met that particular one."
"I hate to break up this little conversation," Brock spoke up, "but we should really get going towards Viridian. Remember Kanto is a couple hours ahead, so we'll be arriving late afternoon, early evening even if we leave now."
"Your right," Ash sighed, taking out a few Pokéballs.
In a flash of light, his Pidgeot, Charizard and Dragonite appeared. Surprisingly, the queen requested to be a part of the trip back. From what he said, she wanted to prove herself as capable after the mess with Hunter J and her battle against Gary. The fire flying type imparticular let out a monstrous roar which scared away some nearby bird Pokémon from the trees.
"I guess this is goodbye," Calem sighed, "for real this time."
"Yeah," Serena mumbled, engulfing her cousin in another hug.
"What about that brother of yours, Ash?" Miette asked, "or your other friends, Leaf and Gary? Aren't they travelling with you?"
"Drake went back this morning with our mum," he explained, "and Leaf and Gary are heading back on their own as well. We'll be meeting them in Pallet, though. My mum mentioned throwing another party for us all. She's done it after our adventures in both Kanto and the Orange Archipelago."
She watched Brock climb onto Charizard's back, as Misty climbed onto Pidgeot's. They talked it through at breakfast who would be flying with who and all of the Pokémon seemed okay with the plan. Ash was stood next to Dragonite, clearly waiting for her to climb on first. Returning her fairy type eeveelution, she bid her cousin and rival-turned-friend one last goodbye before approaching.
The mighty dragon lowered down, and she climbed on to her. She felt her boyfriend climb on behind her. It was a lot more snug than on Pidgeot, the one who she normally flies with. Holding onto her shoulders, the dragon flying type stood up. With her view becoming nothing but orange as she slightly fell into Ash.
She felt herself blush at the squashed position she found herself in. Feeling his legs move, he clearly used them to signal his fully evolved flier. Closing her eyes and holding her breath. A rushing wind blew past her as they clearly took off into the sky. Maybe it was her not risking looking, or that sky dive she took from Hunter J's ship, but she wasn't nearly as scared as one might expect.
Feeling them even out, she peaked out and found themselves flying over a cloud. Barely able to hold onto the urge to reach out and run her hand through the water-vapor creation. As they passed over the single cloud, she peered down over the sky, seeing both Calem and Miette waving towards them as they became nothing more than dots on the ground. Both Pidgeot and Charizard appeared slightly lower than themselves.
"So how do you find it?" her boyfriend asked.
"It's beautiful," she whispered, feeling his head resting on her shoulder. Their cheeks rubbing against each other, "hey Ash."
"Yeah?" he asked.
"What should I do with my mum? She doesn't even know I took an eye test," she asked, "do I call her when we land? Wait until we reach Pallet?"
"Personally, just wait until we get home," he replied, "like I said. It's not a big deal so don't even bring it up until she mentions it. She won't be upset."
"Yeah... it's not like I'm telling her I don't want to Rhyhorn race anymore," she rolled her eyes, not that anyone would've seen.
"Just be glad you're not," he chuckled, "imagine how many frames you'd break being thrown off Rhyhorn."
"Not funny," she pouted.
"hehehe, I was just kidding," he chuckled, "so anyway, have you thought about which Pokémon we should take to Hoenn?"
"Yours truly, of course!" Pikachu's mental voice echoed in her head. As a weak 'pika pi' could be heard. He was riding in Ash's backpack thanks to the lack of room on the flight, but she couldn't help but chuckle at his response.
"I don't know, buddy," Ash called out, "I was thinking about leaving your behind this time. Houndoom could use a new chew toy!"
She couldn't keep it in and burst out laughing as a series of cries came from his backpack. While it was clear Ash was just playing with his starter, it was still incredibly entertaining. Even if the mental messages she heard from the mouse were less than suitable.
"Anyway," Ash continued, clearly trying to ignore his starter's arguments, "I was thinking Granbull and Phanpy for me. Those were the only two who didn't get a gym battle in Johto and are pretty new to the team."
"If I were to go with the same logic," she mumbled, "it would be Hitmontop and Murkrow. While Hitmontop has been... difficult, I do like the idea of taking them both. Murkrow has opened up massively, if only towards a few of us. It would be nice to come up with a routine for her."
"Besides, I wouldn't exactly call Hitmontop difficult," Ash added, "I mean, sure, he doesn't get on with everyone, but he does listen to you. And I know first-hand that some Pokémon just don't like each other. Take Houndoom and Pikachu, or Dragonite and Sandslash."
"Yeah, but they don't get on for more than just because of one of their types," Serena sighed, "if I could figure out why he feels that way about fairy types then maybe I would know how to show him the misconceptions he holds are false. Still, throwing Sylveon onto the team could help him see them differently."
"Unlike that time, he attacked Granbull," Ash chuckled, "she thought it was just a fun sparing match remember."
"Uh huh," she nodded, "it is nice though that she really doesn't care about winning or losing. I couldn't stand it if we had two Pokémon always at each other's throats. Just image the carnage they'd wreck. We might even need to shuffle them carefully so ones on hand while the others at the lab."
"Yeah..." he mumbled, "but look on the bright side, at least you have seven slots to work with. You'll get to spend more time with each Pokémon individually."
"Is that jealousy I hear?" she asked, a smirk formed on her lips, "green is not a good colour for you, Ash."
"I-I-" he stuttered, "I mean-"
"You don't need to explain yourself, Ash," she reassured, "just know that you don't need to feel inferior or whatever. I'll always love you regardless of how many Pokémon you can carry."
"It's not about how many Pokémon you have on hand, Ash!" Pikachu's mental voice echoed as his physical voice accompanied in the background, "it's how you use them!"
"Sh-shut up," he stuttered, as she saw a tint of red enter his cheeks, through the corner of her eye.
She couldn't help but inwardly chuckle at the turn of events. After she spent years being embarrassed about her crush on the boy behind her, seeing him the blubbering mess that was once her designation is actually quite refreshing. Even if they are only playing, she does find it quite relieving, like they'll always have it in common. Pushing her back against his chest, she cooed at the close embrace, happy they'll be stuck in this position for the foreseeable future.
Turning her head slightly, she realised that he was no longer asking any questions. Deciding to take advantage of the opportunity, she pecked the corner of his mouth due to the restricted movements. He must've realised this and turned his head slightly so they could properly share their kisses.
While they can't get as passionate as they could when alone, it was still a nice way to pass the time on the flight to Viridian city.
She looked up at the bright Alolan sun overhead. Wiping the trail of sweat off her forehead, she turned towards the small wooden cottage that held her life's work. It wasn't much but it was something. With a sigh, she stepped into the rigid building.
As she did, she took in the sight of her two friends. The first one being her best friend since they were children, Wicke, whose signature large purple hair stood wide and tall. She was against a board with a bunch of numbers written over it. As she passed, her sister turned and gave a friendly wave. They went to college together and while she specialised in physics, Wicke was the maths specialist. She could calculate any sort of problem put in front of her with just a pen and paper. They started this lab together with a common goal, to make the world a better place. Her second assistant, she knew a lot less. He was another scientific mind who joined them. Recognizable by his large green glasses, he currently had his head buried among several test tubes with different chemicals, some being lit by a bunsen burner. Deciding not to disturb him, she made her through to the back room.
Opening the small door, she stepped into the back room. It was nothing special, just a wooden room with a single desk stacked with papers but it was the shared office. Her and Wicke shared that half of the work, neither of them like it but it's something that must be done, and this week is her turn.
Sitting down on the chair, she picked up the first unopened letter she saw. Quickly opening it, revealed another bill. Neither herself or Wicke were born into money and so this little dream lab is less how it was pictured and more on the verge of closing. As a more traditional region, not many scientific grants are given out. One of the doors flied out and Faba walked in, he dropped a new letter on the desk and left. He didn't talk much but he was proving invaluable with his expertise... with how things are going, they might not be able to keep him on for long. Sighing, she picked up the new letter and opened it completely expecting another bill. She began to read it and her mouth dropped, eyes widening:
Dear President of the Aether Foundation
I am writing to you today, as I have heard about your interesting thesis on these worm holes and the potential benefits they hold towards our own resources and other scientific instructions. I never was one smart enough to advance our planet on these endeavours, but I was born into a substantial sum of money and feel it's my duty to use that to help advance this world, however I can. As such, I am offering my backing in your foundation. A million Poké dollars is being transferred into Aether's accounts, opening this letter is the approval needed. My accounts are set to inject another instalment when your accounts fall below a certain fresh hold. Unfortunately, due to my backing of advance of our human race, many different opponents who suffer through making their business obsolete have colluded against me. I am currently on trial through their meddling and thus unable to visit in person. I plan on overcoming these obstacles, but I don't want any secrets between us. I hope by the time I am free again; you'd have made some significant process. I look forward to working with you in the future.
Your's truly, a friend.
She placed the letter down on her desk and leaned back. Blinking a few times, she looked up at the leaking wooden ceiling. It was as if the island guardians answered her prayers. Picking the letter back up, she quickly skimmed through it once more. Her free hand reached for her phone and she began skimming through her apps. Reaching the banking accounts, she confirmed the amount in the letter.
Dropping both back onto the desk, an incredibly wide smile overtook her face. No long do they need to pinch every penny to try and survive another week. She could finally see her research come into fruition... she could finally build the Aether Paradise and discover the secrets she devoted her life to uncovering.
Ash held onto Dragonite, trapping Serena in a close embrace as they prepared to land. Surprisingly, the other two already landed but then again, they didn't every try to reach their altitude. Even if Pidgeot is the superior flier, it's just the different levels they are respectively comfortable at.
Coming down they landed on a grassy patch just outside of the city. The dirt paths lead in for different directions with a nearby sign pointing out how far they went. Retuning his team of fliers, they all walked over to the middle where the dirt paths crossed. Each step felt like a thousand.
The four friends stood at the intersection of Viridian city. One way led south to Pallet and one road towards the north and Pewter. To the west was the path to the Indigo Plato and the east out towards Celadon city but more importantly, the quickest path to Vermillion. None of them were able to part ways or break eye contact. They have all been together since Ash's first gym battle... it feels like an end to an era.
"Ash, Serena," Misty sighed, "remember your daily t's. Travel, train and take care of each other."
"We'll remember," he rolled his eyes.
"You can count on it, Mist," Serena smiled.
"And make sure Pikachu doesn't eat too much," she added, glancing down at the electric starter.
"I'm in my pika prime," Pikachu called out, not that Misty would've understood, "I'll have you know."
"And now Brock," she continued, "try not to get too distracted by all the girls."
"Hehehe, I think those days are behind me, Misty," he lightly chuckled, "I'll just be focusing on medicine and breeding."
"One more thing-"
"That's enough," Ash whined, not wanting the moment to end with some nagging or another sour note.
"It's just... something I feel I need to tell you both," she replied, her voice breaking after a couple of words, "just keep on... doing your bests."
"What do you mean?" Serena asked.
"Well you know, without me there... I know you've both come so far from the kids I fished out of the lake," Misty choked, "I-I've watched you both grow into the trainers you are now. S-so don't stop just because I'm not there. I know I'm becoming a gym leader but ya'll can become a showcase queen and league champion respectively so-"
"We won't give up until it's over," the couple replied simultaneously.
"Thank you," Misty let a tear escape down her cheek, "for everything. You not only helped me grow b-b-but you were some of my first human friends. Other t-than my sisters and even that is pushing it. But just know-"
"Misty..." Ash sighed, "everything your about to say. We already know."
"I-I still want to say it," she stuttered, "I know you have a habit of finding trouble, or rather, trouble finding you... but if you get stuck out in the ocean and need help, know I'm just a phone call away."
"Same here, Mist," Serena smiled, engulfing her friend in a hug, "if you ever need anything. Whatever the time or where we might be, you just need to give us a call."
Ash glanced at Brock as the two female friends gently rocked back and forth. Seeing the breeder answer his silent question, they both moved in and joined the group embrace. He wasn't sure how long it lasted but eventually they all broke apart, with Misty turning her back.
"Well... its already getting late," she sighed, "this- I guess this is goodbye."
With one last chorus of goodbyes from everyone, she began to walk away. Ash felt his hand engulfed by Serena's as she rubbed her face in into the back of his shoulder. Despite knowing of this time for a while... it doesn't make it any easier. At least with Brock, they have plans to meet up in Hoenn, even if not straight away. Ash couldn't help but have memories from their adventure flash in front of his eyes as the water type specialist disappeared from sight.
"I guess this is where I should take my leave too," Brock sighed.
"Your still going to meet up with us in Hoenn, right?" Serena asked.
"Of course," Brock smiled, "I'll just need you to keep Ash on a short leash and keep ya'll out of trouble before I can keep everyone in top condition."
"Hey-" Ash called out.
"Hehehe, I can do that Brock," she lightly chuckled, drying her eyes.
Stepping forward, she embraced the breeder in a hug. It only lasted a few seconds, but it was clear she would miss her big brother companion. As they ended the embrace, Brock held a handout to him. Pausing for a moment, he slapped his hand right into the opening. Locking their arms like a rock, they stared into each other's eyes. No more words needed to be spoken, everything that could've been said already had been.
Ending the embrace, the former gym leader turned around and began walking back towards Viridian forest and his home in Pewter. Serena once again latched onto his arm as they watch the final friend disappear from sight. Sighing, they turned and set off towards Pallet.
The journey forward came to a stop as a rainbow appeared overhead. A golden shilluette of a bird could be seen flying through it towards the south-west and out of sight. The couple looked at each other, remembering their first day on their journey.
"Chosen of willpower," a voice appeared, "I know my partner, Ho-Oh, is heading off towards your next location. However, I promised you that I would contact you for when the point of no return happens. That time has already past and your brother is on his correct path."
Closing his eyes, he tried his best not to think about it. He felt the tight grip on his arm, reminding him off his girlfriend's presence. Hopefully, he could convince his brother when they get home to verge him off this path.
