Conversation on a Balcony

Abby's mouth was hanging open. Her little sister had grabbed her finger and was holding it, blue eyes moving interestedly around the room.
"She's so tiny, /ieiu/!" she breathed.
She was cradled in Kara's lap with the baby cradled in her little arms and Cat was sitting across from them, a huge smile on her face.
"Isn't she?" Kara said softly. "She's a perfect little thing, just like you were when you were born, Baby Girl."
"I love her," Abby stated seriously, "And I'm going to give her food and take care of her. Does she like pot stickers?"
Cat snorted a laugh and Kara's body shook silently with mirth. "Actually," she managed after a moment. "She doesn't eat yet. She'll only have milk for a while."
Abby nodded. "Does she like chocolate milk? I have some in the refrigerator. I can share."
Cat melted into a puddle of goo and reached out to stroke her daughter's hair lovingly. "That's so kind, Abigail, but Olivia can't have chocolate milk until she's older. /ieiu/ will breastfeed her for a while."
"What's that?" the little girl asked, head tilted in a replica of Kara's inquisitive looks.
"When babies are born," the hero replied gently. "Their Moms make milk in their boobs that the baby drinks. It has special stuff in it that makes them stronger."
Abigail's face scrunched. "That's weird." She looked over her shoulder at her /ieiu/. "Did I drink milk from your boobs when I was a baby?"
Cat and Kara exchanged a look and then the older woman looked down as Kara's eyes welled with tears. She wiped them away and sniffed a little. "No, Baby Girl, you didn't because when you were born, I couldn't make milk, so Mommy and I gave you other special milk in a bottle."
"How… how does it work with Liv?" Abby asked.
Cat and Kara exchanged another look. "Do you want to see?" the older woman asked.
The little girl nodded so Cat took Liv out of her arms and then handed her back to Kara as Abby got up. "Wait," Kara said softly. Cat's eyebrows lifted in question. "Sit with me? Both of you?"
The older woman nodded with a smile and she moved to sit on the couch, on Kara's right side, snuggling Abby in her lap and then wrapping her arm around her wife's shoulders. The hero opened the top few buttons of her shirt and detached the outer panel of the cup of her nursing bra, exposing her left nipple. Then she brought Liv to her breast, encouraging her to latch on as she settled against Cat with Abby looking on in horror.
"No, /ieiu/!" Abby exclaimed. "She'll bite you!"
"It's ok," Cat explained. "Liv doesn't have any teeth yet. It doesn't hurt your /ieiu/."
Kara chuckled. "It doesn't hurt at all."
Cat leaned closer and kissed her wife gently. "I love you," she whispered.
"I love you too," Kara replied with a smile.
And as they sat there, bonding as a family, tears welled in Kara's eyes. She thought about Krypton and realized that she was grateful to be on Earth, to be able to experience things as a mother that she wouldn't have had on her home world… would never have even known she was missing.
At the door, Alex stood quietly watching them. Kelly came up behind her and wrapped her arms around her waist, gently caressing her stomach. "You ok, Mrs. Olsen-Danvers?" she asked quietly, dropping little kisses on her neck.
"Yeah," Alex whispered, through a throat constricted with emotion. "I just can't wait for us to be able to do that."
Kara's head turned and her smile broadened as she winked and blew her sister a kiss.
