Alright, so the last bit of these addendums are a new idea for my writing. After writing How to Become a Friend, I did some more research into how comas work (just cause I was interested) and learned that people don't just "wake up". They actually wake over the course of days or weeks, and often don't recall much of these conscious spells. So, despite it not appearing in my quintessential first movie fic, I put it in here because I liked the idea. Forgive the inconsistency haha
Addendum 13
Well, Hiccup woke up. But then he fell back under a minute later.
I called the healers and told them what had happened, and they said this is normal. Not many people on Berk have ever fallen into a coma, and definitely not in my chiefdom. But apparently, waking up is a slow process, involving weeks of partial consciousness and spotty memory. They said I shouldn't expect him to remember anything from these moments of awareness, not until he wakes up for good. Honestly, that's probably a good thing.
I was sitting by the fire, getting ready for bed, when I heard noise from Hiccup's bed. I looked over to see he'd shifted positions for the first time in months, and after a moment, his eyes opened.
I didn't say anything, because I wasn't sure if I was truly seeing this, until he said something. "Dad?" His voice was weak, but it was HIS, and the best thing I'd heard in a long time.
"I'm here, Hiccup," I said, moving my chair into his vision.
He just looked at me for a moment, eyes not seeming to be focused on anything in particular, a confused look on his face. "Don't kill Toothless," he said finally, the words blurring together as unconsciousness started to take him again.
"Never," I answered, but he was already back under. I sighed, picking up one of his hands. "Come on, son. I know you can do this…" But he remained silent.
It's sad, and shows me just how awful of a father I've been. My son wakes up for the first time in months, has no idea what's going on, and the first thing he thinks to say is not to kill his friend. Even only being half aware… he thought of Toothless first. No care for what happens to himself, as if he's worth nothing… Just one more thing I need to fix.
I hope next time, he'll stay a little longer. And there WILL be a next time.
