Isaac took off in a sprint down to the port after emerging from the lower decks of the Vestal. Odin shook her head and took off after him, catching up as he stopped next to the port slot that Patty we using to unmoor 556 from her hull.
"Heya, Commander." Patty said with a slightly forced smile.
"Patty. What happened?" Isaac asked.
"I can confirm the destruction of the enemy fleet, Commander. That detonation wiped out every ship in that enemy fleet. Richthofen is also improvising and maintaining anti-submarine patrols around the port with AP bombs." Patty said.
"That smile is forced. I can tell by your eyes. What's the bad news?" Isaac asked as Friedrich was helped over to him by Australia.
"The head bulin is dead." Patty said, allowing her smile to drop from her face.
"She's... dead?" Isaac asked as he looked to the horizon, where the last remnants of the mushroom cloud dissipated into the sky.
"U-556 confirmed her MIA after being dragged off the Hood by the other Bulins. Her last known location was underneath a pile of powder barrels in the boiler room." Patty explained as a cry permeated the conversation. Isaac turned to see Friedrich cover her mouth and fall to her knees, learning of the death of one of her beloved children.
"Did... did she say anything?" Isaac asked, not sure if he wanted to hear it.
"She did... Kommandant." 556 said as Isaac turned back to face her.
"What did she say?" Isaac asked.
"She wanted me to tell Friedrich that she's sorry that she won't be coming home this time. She hopes you can forgive her." 556 said as Friedrich's cries grew louder.
"Anything else, U-556?" Isaac asked.
" 'I'm sorry, Commander. I won't be coming back this time. But, I want to thank you for giving a mere tool like myself a purpose worth living and fighting for. My only regret is not being able to continue my service anymore.' Those were her last words." U-556 spoke.
Isaac hung his head. The realization of the first real loss beginning to sink in.
"Isaac. We're here for you." Odin whispered as she held his hand.
"Tend to Friedrich, please... I still have more deaths to tally." Isaac said, his voice filled with the same deep sadness that Odin knew was present when Nimi was killed.
"Australia is tending to her right now, see?" Odin asked as Isaac looked, seeing the dirty blonde Australian battlecruiser taking her turn being the fleet mom and coddling a crying Friedrich like a child who lost her puppy.
"What happened here, Admiral?" MacArthur asked as he passed by carrying a crate towards one of the warehouses from the transport ship.
"The head bulin was lost in the explosion." Patty said before Isaac could stop her.
"Lost? You haven't found her?" MacArthur asked.
"She's dead, sir." Patty said as Isaac's eyes grew dark.
"Oh? And what happened to you never losing a member of your fleet, Admiral? Wasn't that something you prided yourself on?" MacArthur said, setting the crates on the ground and sitting on them.
"Just drop it already." Isaac said.
"You rode my ass for losing those girls back in New Guinea, so what's wrong with me doing the same? A bit hypocritical, don't you think?" MacArthur asked.
"You ordered them to die!" Isaac roared, causing heads to turn their way.
"And now, so did you, Admiral." MacArthur said, cracking a small smile.
"I didn't order her to die! She volunteered her service to inspect the Hood, against my orders." Isaac growled in return.
"Oh? So she WANTED to die?" MacArthur asked as the crate beneath him was demolished by a shell from Friedrich's rigging.
"You will not speak of my child in such a manner." Friedrich's voice came across as nearly demonic.
"That's assault on a superior officer." MacArthur said as he turned towards Isaac, who had turned away from MacArthur, giving Friedrich all the permission she needed.
MacArthur's yells were muffled by an angry Friedrich as she dragged him towards the Vestal. A few of MacArthur's men dropped their cargo and ran towards Friedrich, but were stopped by Odin and Australia, who blocked their path.
"Yo, let us through!" The men yelled.
"Sorry, the Vestal is off limits until further notice." Odin said as the men turned their gaze towards Isaac.
"You colored mother fucker. You'd let that witch do whatever to him? Just because he gave you a taste of your own medicine?" One of the soldiers asked as they got in Isaac's face. Isaac's vein popped on the side of his temple as the rage towards the soldier's comments grew.
"You can call me whatever you want, Private. But if you berate and insult my wife, I will not hesitate to make your life a living hell. And to correct your statement, HE ordered girls to die. My girls went against orders, and gave their lives and limbs so people like you and your prick of a General could continue living a kushy life here on base with us. How about next time you guys figure out how to bring down one of those drone ships with your dinky little tanks? Hmm? Not so prideful now that you realize you're the ones being protected here." Isaac said as he wound up to throw a punch, but was caught by U-556.
"Kommandant. Head Bulin wanted you to know she was happy. You gave her life meaning. Don't cause her to frown upon us by wasting your energy on this lower grunt." 556 said as Isaac looked at the man, who was a few inches shorter than him.
"You're right, 556. Odin, escort these men back to the transport ship. Australia, please go and check on the General. I may despise the man, but I don't want his blood on Friedrich's hands." Isaac said as Australia ran off towards the Vestal.
Odin produced her rigging and escorted the disgruntled soldiers back to the transport ship. Isaac turned to look at the Missouri.
"Admiral. What is going on out here? I heard a shell impact." Nimitz said as he strolled over to where Isaac was standing.
"Misfire, Admiral." Isaac said.
"Uh huh." Nimitz replied skeptically.
"That aside... I apologize profusely for what happened out there." Isaac said as he dipped his head.
"Actually, Admiral... I am not here to bust your chops for what we lost. I wanted to bring you onboard so we can send these sailors to their rest with full honors. And with you being the Admiral of this Navy, you should be present." Nimitz said as he pointed to the still smoking vessel known as the Missouri.
Isaac nodded. He wiped away his tears, an action that did not go unnoticed.
"Is something wrong, Admiral?" Nimitz asked.
"We both lost someone today, Admiral." Isaac said as he looked out at the horizon.
"Then we shall include your loss in the ceremony, Admiral. Who was it?" Nimitz asked.
"The Head Bulin. She's been with me since the beginning. Excellent Mechanic. Ruthless fighter. A good friend." Isaac said.
"I understand. Come. The boys are waiting." Nimitz said as the two Admirals approached the Union Battleship.
MacArthur laid on the ground, crumpled in a ball. No blood was spilled, but a bright red handprint was present on his right cheek. Yet, despite the mild injury, the hardened General was crumpled on the ground crying like a child.
"Friedrich, we should let him go. He's apologized so many times that I lost count." Australia said as she coaxed Friedrich to leave the room.
"I wish you would have let me at him more than that. Verbal punishment isn't as satisfying." Friedrich growled as she leaned on Australia.
"The Commander said he didn't want the General's blood on your hands. So I think you have done all you can." Australia said.
"No... I haven't." Friedrich said as she tore herself away and ran back to the room with MacArthur in it. She looked down at the General, who was still reeling from the verbal assault unleashed upon him by Friedrich.
"Let it sink in properly, Gen-er-al." Friedrich said angrily as she drove her foot into MacArthur's stomach.
"Don't. Disrespect. My. Children." Friedrich spoke, kicking again between each word.
"Friedrich! Stop!" Australia cried as she wrapped her arms around Friedrich's waist and picked her up, grunting slightly.
"Jesus... Weren't you Germans fascist? How did you get so big.." Australia said before getting a glare from Friedrich.
"...I mean well armored! Krupp steel sure is great for defense. All you German girls are so well armored, it's amazing you can even take damage." Australia said as she struggled to drag an angry Friedrich from the room, leaving MacArthur to clutch his now extremely bruised chest and abdomen.
"Let me go... I haven't finished with him." Friedrich said.
"You know I can't do that missy. You'll kill him at this rate. I only let you do that much because he deserved that much, based on what some of the others have said." Australia said.
Friedrich grumbled a bit but finally relented.
"Fine. But next time I won't be so lenient." Friedrich said as she crossed her arms, still being carried by Australia.
"I know you won't." Australia said as she carried Friedrich down to the Med Bay.
Isaac and Nimitz stepped onto the deck of the Missouri. Isaac was immediately met with rows of white sheets covering the bodies of the deceased. A quick count on his end left him with 32 bodies.
"Two more died in the medical bay. The shock was too much." Nimitz said as Isaac removed his hat. Nimitz followed suit.
"Would you like to give the speech, Admiral?" Nimitz asked.
"I will, if you would like me too." Isaac said.
"I think it would mean more to the boys if it came from you." Nimitz said.
"Alright... I guess I can give it a go." Isaac said as he walked towards the bodies, seeing the remaining uninjured members of the Missouri scattered among the deck and every level of the superstructure.
Isaac cleared his throat.
"We... are gathered here today... not as a Navy, but as a family. A family that has sustained a great loss in the face of our adversary. And while emotions run wild and anger is surely coursing through the veins of everyone present... let us not forget that we must honor those that have passed on." Isaac said as Nimitz handed him a slip of paper containing names.
"The men aboard this vessel have fought tooth and nail to get where we are today. And those that paid the ultimate price, shall be honored here on this day. Sailor Stronson. Gunners mate first class Parker. Loader Ramerez..." Isaac continued down the list of names in the background as the fire guard officer barked his orders.
"Attention!"
"Present... Arms!"
"All Hands, Salute!" The officer yelled as every sailor present stood at attention as Isaac continued down the list of names.
"Gunners mate second class Horner. Spotter Coleman. And Second Lieutenant Price. These men all gave their lives in the fight against the Sirens. Let us honor their passing." Isaac said as Nimitz walked up on stage as well.
"We also have one more name to add to the list. This one, from Admiral Garner's Kansen fleet. The Chief of Repairs, Head Bulin. The Union has given her the code name Rosie. Rosie was killed in the line of Duty in the battle that resulted in the deaths of these wonderful men and fearsome warriors. It was due in large part to her courage and willingness to sacrifice, that saved us all from the explosion that devastated and ultimately felled the enemy fleet. As an Admiral myself, I'd be remiss if I did not reward her courage in the line of duty, and the fact that she went well above and beyond the call of duty to save our skins. Henceforth, Rosie has been granted the rank of Captain posthumously. Her legacy will live on within all of us, as the fighting Mechanic, and Hero of Azur Lane." Nimitz said as he and Isaac raised their arms in a Salute to the fallen.
"Aim... Fire!" Shots rang out from seven rifles pointed out to sea.
"Fire!" Another round of shots.
"Fire!" The final round of shots rang out as the Fire Guard Officer held out his arm.
"Captain Rosie and the men of Turret Two have returned to Quarters. Rest well soldiers! We'll pick up the guard from here." The Officer said as he gave a slow but powerful salute as suddenly, every able ship in the harbor sounded their horns, drowning out the cries of the Bulins, and the men who had lost friends.
Nimitz turned to Isaac.
"Admiral. Let me and my First mate take you out of port for the evening. I believe we all can use some time to properly mourn." Nimitz said as Isaac nodded.
"That... would be nice, Admiral." Isaac said as he wiped away his own tears, feeling the loss of one of his own weighing heavily once more.
"Also, Mr. Garner. I would like to accompany you when you visit Lady Hood. On this, I will not negotiate." Nimitz said.
"I won't protest that. Come. She's onboard the Norfolk in the Med bay." Isaac said as the sailors set about moving the bodies from the ship to the port to be placed in caskets and sent home.
