Prompt: Can you write an angsty fic where Kensi and Deeks get into an argument about something and then Kensi blurts out that she's pregnant
"Kensi, can't this wait until later?" Deeks asked as Kensi single-mindedly spread out a stack of papers and started opening up tabs she'd saved on her laptop. The entire dining room table was covered with stuff: papers, a rainbow of highlighters, post-its, and color coded binders. It was slightly unnerving.
"This is important," Kensi said, ignoring his sigh and nudging his elbow off the table so she could lay down yet another form.
"Yeah, but Babe, do we really need to do this right now. I mean, we already have our own life and accident insurance and the plans through work. And, we just updated our will a few months ago."
"Those policies are only for $10,000 each. That's not a lot," Kensi argued. "And a lot has changed since we updated the will; we need to make sure it stays current." Rubbing his hands through his hair, Deeks groaned again.
"We were supposed to be at the beach right now," he reminded her. "Surfing, and laying in the sun." He let his voice drop, trying to entice her. "Cuddling up on a beach blanket together."
"So you think we should just shirk our responsibilities because this isn't fun?" Deeks blinked at her, not really sure where this fairly sudden intensity was coming from. She'd been working on this feverishly for the past few days, growing increasingly irritable. Every time he tried to talk to her or distract her, she brushed him off or got annoyed with him.
"No. I just don't see why we have to do it right now," he answered, a bit of his own irritation leaking through. "Besides, it's not like you're the one who usually cares that much about this stuff."
Immediately, he knew he'd said the wrong thing and he swore under his breath. Kensi's back stiffened and she tilted away from him. "Kensi–"
"Are you implying that I'm careless? Irresponsible?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm. Her eyes flashed and she started gathering up the papers, her hands shaking slightly.
"Babe. Baby, no. That's not what I meant. It's just that usually I'm the one who takes care of these things. You know, as the resident lawyer in the family. Ok, terrible time for a joke. It's just that you've been acting strange for days." He placed his hand over one of hers, effectively stopping her ceaseless movement. He felt her hand tremble, the shivers running straight up her arm.
"What if something happens to us?" she said, biting down on her lip and avoiding eye contact. Something in Deeks' stomach clenched and suddenly everything started to make horrible sense.
"Baby, are you sick?" he asked, his voice trembling to match her hands. She looked confused for a second, then shook her head, jerking her hand out from under his.
"Then what the hell is going on?" he snapped, his worry and frustration coming out again.
"Nothing," Kensi insisted. "This was a terrible idea. You go to the beach. I need some time to myself." She started to walk away, abandoning him and the papers. After a moment, he jumped up and hurried after her, cutting her off before she could get to the stairs.
"Kensi, you can't just walk away from me. You've been acting off for days and you been irritable and secretive. If you're not sick, tell me what's going on." She spun around.
"I think I'm pregnant!" There was a moment of silence following Kensi's declaration and then she pressed a hand to her mouth.
"Really?" Deeks asked quietly, reaching out for her automatically. She let him pull her into his arms, unable to contain a quiet sob. She nodded into his chest, clutching at his shirt. He swallowed harshly. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? I thought we agreed on that."
Kensi pulled back and swiped under her eyes. "Um, I" she started, her voice breaking and she cleared her throat noisily. The a few days ago I took a test and it was super light so I thought I'd just wait a little longer in case I was wrong."
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked again, brushing her hair back. "You know I want to do all of this together, no matter the outcome."
"I didn't want to get your hopes up again after all the false alarms," she whispered. Deeks pressed his hand to the small of her back, rubbing small circles.
"Oh baby," he sighed. She sniffled and pressed her nose against his neck.
"When the tests kept getting darker, little by little, I started thinking of all the things we haven't done yet. We haven't prepared anything. And what happens if one of gets hurt or dies, or both of us?" Her voice started rising higher with every word, the true depths or her distress coming through.
"Baby, nothing is going to happen to us."
"We don't know that. And what happens if we don't have anything in place for our baby? Who's going to take care of them?"
"We will figure that out, together. It's going to be ok. Ok?" he said. She nodded after a moment and leaned up for a kiss.
"I'm scared." He could see it in her eyes. The fear and stress she'd kept hidden from him.
"I know." He hugged her tighter against him and pressed his lips to the side of her hair. "But I will be by your side every step of the way, no matter what happens. We'll figure it out together." Letting out a shuddery sigh, Kensi curled her fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck and smiled wetly at him.
"Even if I'm screaming at you for doing this to me and the size of a small whale?" she asked. He smiled back and pressed another light kiss to her lips.
"Even then. Always," he promised. He slid his hand down her arm and linked their finger, tugging her back towards the table. "C'mon we've got some papers to fill out."
A/N: Did someone ask for a side of angst?
I have no idea if NCIS offers life/injury insurance, etc as a benefit, but it seems likely.
