Hermione knew her new neighbor was a vampire. She'd seen the real estate agent visiting the house at night with a man wearing dark clothes. She'd watched them pause at the thresh hold. Vampires had to be invited in after all. Hermione wondered what it would be like living next door to a vampire.
She'd been hoping some cute guy would move into the empty house. She'd tried dating before but hadn't found anyone that matched her in both intelligence and personality. What were vampires like anyway? She only knew a little bit about them, just what they were taught in school.
Vampires lived forever, they drank blood, only were awake at night, slept in coffins. She knew some of this had to be wrong. She watched the man enter the house with the agent. They went through the entire house, turning lights on. Hermione wondered if he would move in, and if he did, would he really be as bad as she'd been led to believe? Would he really be that much different from the other people who lived in the neighborhood?
Sure, vampires were up at odd hours, but then again, so was Dean. He worked at the market as a third shift stocker. Vampires were known to eat strange things, usually blood. That wasn't too different from Lavender's latest nonsense about how eating only beets would melt the fat from her body. Hermione watched as the vampire moved in to the house next door with several large trunks. There didn't seem to be a coffin, so she figured that part must be false.
She could see the lights on in the house and wondered what one would bring to welcome such a person to the neighborhood. A pie wouldn't work. Hermione was also hopeless at cooking. She wasn't sure if vampires drank wine or not. No, she would have to figure something out. Her eyes landed on her book shelf and a smile crossed her face. A journal. A leather bound journal would be a nice welcoming gift.
If nothing else, it would look slightly impressive on a bookshelf. She, herself, had a fair collection. She bought a new one the next day. This one has a black leather cover and beautiful cream colored pages. She waited until the sun had set and the lights had been flicked on in the house next door. Slowly, she slipped out of her own house, carrying the book. She paused at the door before knocking loudly. There was no doorbell. Within moments the door swung open.
"Good evening?"
Hermione finally got a good look at the man living next door. He was pale with long black hair, a crooked nose that she found charming, and was wearing a black cloak. He looked entirely like the stereotypical vampire.
"Good evening, I'm your new next door neighbor and I wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood. Um, I wasn't sure what to get you, so here," she said, thrusting out the journal. He took and flipped through its blank pages. A smile crossed his face.
"However did you know I enjoy chronically my time, Miss?"
"Granger, Hermione Granger. And I didn't. I love writing and reading and even if you didn't care for either, it would still look good on a bookshelf," she babbled, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks.
"Thank you, very much. Would you care to come in, I find I've yet to make many friends here yet. I'm Severus, by the way."
"Sure, and people around here aren't too bad once you get to know them," Hermione said, following Severus inside. She knew some people would be afraid to be alone with a vampire, but the feelings she felt towards Severus were nothing but curiosity and attraction. She'd never known a vampire before and besides, he did seem nice enough, maybe he was the kind of guy she was looking for after all?
