A/N: THE END IS NIGH!

Chapter Seven

Sam

Not Over You- Gavin Degraw

Dreams
That's where I have to go
To see your beautiful
Face anymore I stare at a picture of you
And listen to the radio

Sam was jogging when he saw the first billboard, an entire billboard with the most beautiful woman he'd know outside of his mother and well hers. He stopped dead in his tracks when seeing her smiling there almost life like and he was certain if he close his eyes and imagined he could be able to hear her infectious laugh. She had been gone from his life for a year now and the only thing that kept him from running to Los Angeles was the fact that he didn't know how to apologize to her.

He thought of sending texts, letters and emails but nothing felt right, nothing in his life had felt right since she left and the longer he sat on his guilt the harder it got for him to actually say the three little words. I'm so sorry. He knew that wouldn't suffice not after everything he'd learned about his own self and how this was his poor judgment and carelessness that cause him to lose her.

He looked one last time at the billboard before finishing his jog and heading to his packed up apartment, he'd stay there as long as he could before he needed to move because being there without her was taking a toll over him. All the memories they shared there was constantly playing in his mind, like when they first moved in and didn't have any furniture and he told her she could sleep on him or their Wednesday morning breakfast fest. Wednesday was the only day the both had off and they dedicated their mornings to making full fledged feasts every time and sitting in bed catching up on their favorite shows or just being in each others presence.

Sam missed her shampoo and watching her wash her hair. He missed hearing her sing as she did it and seeing how much longer her hair had grown from the previous wash day. He missed her being topless as she did it and him copping a feel every soft often until she would chase after him to make him stop. He knew he should've asked her a million times over to marry him but she never pressured him to do it and he knew he should've encouraged her more to chase the dream she was making come true now because he knew without a doubt she was meant for something so much better than what she settled for.

Hope, hope there's a conversation
We both admit we had it good
But until then it's alienation
I know that much is understood

"Ma?" Sam said into his phone after sitting next to a box of her things.

"Hey sweetie, how are you?"

"How many times did she call you to make sure you were okay after you got sick?" He asked his mother and she couldn't help but be confused at his question.

"Mercedes?"

"Mhm." He answered grabbing the teddy bear he'd won for her years ago at the fair.

"Everyday, sometimes twice a day and she would sing for me."

"That's what I thought." He said getting choked up because he was too afraid to call his mom when she'd gotten really sick and no one could figure out why. Her health was just declining and for a moment it didn't look promising.

"Sam baby why are you asking me this?"

"Just wanted to further confirm how much of an asshole I am." He said hugging the bear. "God I really messed this up."

"Hmm… it took you a while to hit rock bottom but I'm happy you did." Mary said with a light chuckle.

"I had already hit it."

"No you hit the floor, you're at the bottom now and the only way up is through. This isn't the first time you messed up but it is the first time she left. You know what to do to win her back but when you do, make sure you do it the right way this time."

And I realise
If you ask me how I'm doing
I would say I'm doing just fine
I would lie and say that you're not on my mind

Sam knew what she was talking about when she said he'd messed up before because that should have been the time she broke up with him but she didn't.

It was during their sophomore year of college when he blew her off to go hang out with his friends after promising to spend more time together. He lied to her telling her that he was sick and promised to make it up to her the following day, he failed to remember how caring she was and she showed up to his dorm with soup and medicine only to find them having a full blown party.

When she walked in she hadn't seen him immediately but when she did she walked straight up to him not saying a single word. She just placed the soup and medicine down before walking out and for a week he tried like hell to get her to talk to him but she wouldn't even acknowledge his presence. He called, waited outside her dorm to catch her coming and going and he would wait outside her classes but she wouldn't talk to him. After finally getting the hint he figured a grand gesture would hopefully get her attention so he stopped showing and stop harassing her and begged Kurt to just get her to show up at the school's stadium the following Friday.

He remembered seeing her looking confused before spotting him standing there with his guitar and rolled her eyes before turning to walk away.

"Mercedes please… I know I don't deserve it but please." He said making her stop and turn back around looking at him before she waved her hand for him to start.

"I know what I did was wrong, I shouldn't have lied and I shouldn't have hurt you but I did because I am the biggest asshole and for some insane reason you allow me to be your boyfriend…" He started letting out a nervous sigh hoping like hell he was still actually her boyfriend.

"You told me once that if I ever had to apologize for anything that it needed to be sincere and truthful. Mercedes I am very sorry for doing what I did and I'm even more sorry for breaking your trust, it hurts me to know that I was too stupid to realize how this would effect you." He continued noticing that she'd moved closer slightly and that made him smile slightly.

"I can say sorry until I'm blue in the face but I want to show that I am sorry in the one way I know might help you believe me." Sam said before he started strumming his guitar and singing Last Time I Say Sorry by Kane Brown and John Legend. He saw the corners of her lips turn up slightly when he began to move closer as he continued to sing to her until he was directly in front of her placing his guitar down and holding his hand out for her praying like hell she'll take it.

For a brief moment Mercedes just stares at his hand knowing she wanted to take it but also wondering if it made her weak to do so, especially after he'd lied to her and for no real reason. She looked up from his hand to his eyes and saw the sincerity in them, he was sorry and she wanted to forgive him because she missed him.

"Before I take your hand you have to promise to be honest and if you want to hang out with your friends just tell me." She said finally speaking to him.

"I promise I won't lie again and I will let you know if I want to hang out with my friends." Sam replied honestly. She looked at him for a little while longer before taking his hand and allowing him to pull her into a tight hug.

"I love you and I'm sorry." He said before kissing her.

Sam knew this plan he had might not work but he didn't think anything else would actually get her attention. He placed the bear back in the box and stood up looking over their apartment one last time before grabbing the last two boxes and walking out.

"I hope this works." He said to his self after loading his truck and sitting in the drivers side. He sent one final message to Mercedes before driving off and tossing his phone out the window.

If you ask me how I'm doing
I would say I'm doing just fine
I would lie and say that you're not on my mind
But I go out, and I sit down at a table set for two
And finally I'm forced to face the truth
No matter what I say I'm
Not over you
