God Said

Chapter 19

Epilogue

Kate wasn't paying much attention. The professor was talking and writing but Kate didn't really notice anything she did. Her eyes were on the ring on her finger.

Rick had gotten down on one knee while she was holding Alexis and trying to get her to smile at her and was actually having fun. He had proposed and she had finally managed, after all the shock, to say yes. She'd made love to him that night while engaged for the first time.

They hadn't talked about it since that moment so there was no talk about just when or even where. However, as she looked at her ring she wanted to get married somewhere warmer. Somewhere that had sunshine and a beach.

It wasn't until the students suddenly all got up and the girl next to her wanted out that Kate had to gather her stuff, stand up, and leave.

Kate had just one class today but instead of going home she took a taxi to the bookstore. Rick was working there with her mother today.

"Angel!" Johanna was happy to see her. She walked over to her, hugged her, and got hugged in return.

"Where's Adam?" Kate wanted desperately to hug him and kiss him.

"He's in back doing inventory. We got a supply shipment in today so he's making sure we got what we asked for," Johanna explained but stopped Kate from leaving.

"I'm really glad you're talking to me again. I thought I was doing the right thing. Can you imagine if that man decided to try and be President? A killer with access to hired killers for President." The very idea made Johanna shiver. They had, of course, talked about just that. It was all they could think of.

"Me too, Mom. It would have come out eventually. Something that big was going to haunt him. I'm going to go find my future husband." Kate smiled a wide smile since that word was her new most favorite word. HUSBAND.

Jim was home almost alone. All he had for company was Jo and Alexis who was still growing like a weed. She was now seven months old and actually had her own room instead of sharing one with her father. She was even almost ready to start crawling. And Jim had caught his wife trying to teach Alexis how to say Mama.

"Katie's going to go back to being angry with you once she figures this out," Jim warned his wife.

"You're the only one who knows, so if you don't talk she'll never know." Johanna was sure she was in the clear. Then the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it." Jim went to the door and opened it to find Benson. "Um, hi? Are we in danger?" It was the only reason Jim could think of as to why he would be here.

Benson stepped in and closed the door. "Who's here?"

"Just my wife and Wednesday," Jim told him. "Adam and Angel are manning the store today. She finished her last final so school's over. She's just waiting for her grades to be posted."

Jim followed him to where his wife and Alexis were. "I have news. All of you can go home as of today. We will maintain this place for another week but we already have airline tickets for all of you. You and your wife will go to New York City. After that you're on your own. Rick, Kate, and Alexis have tickets for San Francisco.

"Bracken has been arrested and using what we found we've arrested or killed all of the people he hired to do his dirty work. Bail has been denied and you two wouldn't believe the size of illegal drug trade he had going to fund everything," Benson informed them.

"We can go home?" Jim almost didn't believe him.

"May I ask about Captain Montgomery? He was my help," Johanna inquired.

"Former Captain Montgomery has his own issues to deal with," Benson replied. "He could probably use a very good lawyer. Or two and maybe even a law student if you happen to know anyone available," Benson hinted.

"I think we can handle that," Johanna said with a wide smile.

Rick, Kate, and Alexis were exiting the airport in San Francisco and had paperwork. Their old house had been rented while they were gone, however, a different one had been found for them. It was perhaps a little farther out but they'd been told it was fully furnished. Both cars, her motorcycle, and bicycle should be waiting for them and they had keys.

"I wonder what they got us," Rick queried as they walked from baggage claim to ground transportation.

"I don't care what it looks like. There's no snow anywhere to be found. Future husband." Kate grinned wide at him.

"I think it's a townhouse." Rick wasn't sure he liked it.

"We have neighbors but I see my car," Kate said with a smile. "Everything else better be in the garage or I'm going to sic Mom on them."

"Well you play with your car since I'm betting we don't have any food at all," Rick told her and took Alexis inside with him. He just wanted a quick peek before going shopping for groceries.

Kate walked around her car just to make sure they didn't put a dent in it. Just as she rounded to the other side she saw the impossible.

It was a lady with a full head of blonde curly hair. She was wearing a pink dress, had green wings, and Kate was pretty sure she had a wand in one hand. She was even flying her way except her wings weren't moving an inch. She was kicking her legs and waving her arms and was giggling a happy sound.

Kate's eyes were open wide and suddenly she hit her. Except she didn't feel a thing. She twisted to see where she'd gone but didn't see anything. "What the hell was that?" Kate began looking everywhere including asking if anyone had seen that. After all she was outside.

oO{}O{}Oo

"Was that necessary?" the man standing next to her questioned.

She turned to look at him. "Yes! She needed to know that the truth can be painful. And why did you stop me from hitting her?"

"Because I'm GOD and I said so. But I have another mission for you. The best part is that humans have no concept of how time works." He sent her off on her next mission.

"MOMMY!" Alexis rushed to Kate and then came up short since her mommy and daddy were kissing. "EWWW!" Alexis turned around so she didn't have to see.

Alexis had put her hands down and right now there was this crazy lady standing there in a pink dress. She had green wings, curly blonde hair, and a wand in her hand. Alexis watched as she put finger to her lips to keep her silent.

But Alexis couldn't. "Mommy?" Then she saw the lady giggle and suddenly vanish.

"What is it, sweetie?" Kate very carefully got down on her knees given that she was seriously pregnant and put her arms around her.

Alexis was all set to tell her but stopped. Maybe she should keep it a secret for now.

Johanna had done her job and now she had a new one. Her daughter's future had changed but she knew she had a stubborn streak. She was a lawyer instead of a homicide detective. Kate was still in danger and she would be there to steer her away yet again.

God had said so.
