Fin waited at the hospital for the doctors to give the okay for talking to Juliana Connors. Making it here meant that the war was over. Almost.
"Fin!"
He rose from his chair and looked around. Carisi was on the approach with all three of the Connors brothers. Junior. Benedict. William. The last time he'd seen them was at the precinct.
Carisi spoke again when they drew level. "We wrapped everything up at the precinct. These guys wanted to see their mom. So I drove."
Junior stepped forward. "Pardon me, sir— but where exactly is our mother?"
Fin was glad he could answer. "She's resting nearby. Have you and your brothers been made aware of her seizure episode?"
"Yes." Junior said as his brothers both nodded.
"Good. Your mother is a little out of it, still." Fin told reported. "Juliana needs time to recover. I'll also have get her official statement regarding her version of tonight's events."
Benedict did his best to be calm. "Okay. Thank you, sir. That'll work. Have you heard anything about our father?"
"No. But you might want to drop his attorney a line."
Fin looked around. Certain people were absent from this gathering.
"I take it that DJ and Pippa didn't want to come?"
Junior took the helm again as he gave a nod. "Yeah. They're not leaving the precinct until Hugo is in custody. That's fine. We also acknowledge the errors of our ways. All that matters to us right now is their safety."
"Do any of you think they'll make up with your parents?"
Benedict answered this. "Dad, no. Mom? Perhaps. Pippa will support DJ if she goes that route because she's practically her wife. My brothers and I just want to help. We came to that conclusion on the way here."
Fin was impressed. "Wow. That's big of you all. My squad is well aware of your parents' homophobic attitude."
William chimed in, "We are not them. Is there anything we should be doing right now?"
"Just call any concerned parties." Find decided. "Maybe also that lawyer."
The Connors men understood and went about, following through on the suggestion. It wasn't like there was much else to do.
After Juliana recovered from her seizure, Fin was quick to assure her that she had been a victim of the circumstances. Which meant she wouldn't be going to jail because of the events in the park. This brought the matriarch a great deal of security. And relief. She was able to give her account with ease.
Fin poked his head back in the room after having taken a phone call outside from Judge Donnelley.
"Missus Connors?" he called out to her.
The woman looked away from her sons to the kind man. "Is there news, detective?"
"Yes, m'am. Hugo has been caught. Your husband, too. He's also going to jail." Fin reported. "There's no chance of them ever getting out."
Juliana exhaled shakily. "Then what about my husband? Will he be getting treatment? Last I saw, Clifford was rather a wreck..."
Fin also had the answer for this. "He's en route to this hospital for treatment. He will also be appearing before a judge about this mess in some fashion. I'm sure of that, m'am."
"Okay." Juliana felt reassured. "What penitentiary will he be going to? Bellevue?"
"My guess would be Attica, or Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Once doctors clear him." Fin mused. "Would you like to see your husband before then?"
"Uh-uh. The next time I'm going to see him will be to start divorce proceedings." Juliana frowned. "He let Hugo hurt me. Thanks to that, I'm going to need serious physical therapy to rebuild my arm and leg strength."
Fin grew sympathetic. "I'm sorry, Missus Connors. What all did the doctors tell you on that front?"
She sighed. "The short version is that I'll definitely be leaving this place in a chair, and I'll need a few months of therapy."
"Is there anything my team and I can do?"
"No, but thank you, detective. That's very kind." Juliana rubbed her eyes to keep from crying. "I am not petty. But I am just so angry, even if Clifford is the father of my children. I will never be able to forgive him. Not for this."
Beside her, Junior patted Juliana's arm. "Easy does it."
Juliana took a few steadying breaths. Fin waited. He could see she was on the verge of getting everything off her chest.
She spoke again after a few beats. "Detective Tutuola, do you know anything about there Diana is? Or Pippa? They're inseparable."
"Both of them have been at the precinct for the past few hours. It was their choice to remove themselves out of Hugo's warpath." Fin answered. "I promise you that they have both been very safe. My people have been looking after them. Ed Tucker went to collect them."
Juliana gave an actual smile at the mention of her friend doing something so kind. "That's just like him to help the family. Will you make sure Diana and Pippa come here?"
"Yes, m'am." Fin said again. "I'll be out in the waiting room if you need anything."
He excused himself away from the room again.
Things had come to somewhat of a standstill at the precinct.
After Amanda sent Olivia the news about secured arrest warrants, there was nothing to do. Except wait.
The monotony broke somewhat after Carisi and Fin returned with all of the brothers in tow for a situation appraisal. All of the newcomers were equally alarmed to learn that their parents were... unaccounted for. But the detectives believed them when they swore up and down that they didn't know anything.
DJ and Pippa made it known that they didn't want to be around the Connors brothers. Everyone had expected as much. Unforgiving was heavy in the air.
But Alex and Casey were successful in coaxing them out from their room to join them and the Novaks for the takeout food when it arrived. Progress.
And Pippa even perked up when her own parents arrived. She had been keeping them in the loop all day.
Morale also increased on the whole when those at the precinct were informed of Juliana's rescue.
On the other hand… Alex yet felt like she was losing her mind. The enormity of the situation was not lost on her. At all. Her future depended on this case ending the right way.
So nobody stopped Alex when she took refuge in Olivia's office. The woman was on pins and needles. But she left the door open.
"Alexandra?"
Only one person left in her life called her by that name regularly enough.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Alex moved from behind the desk to meet her teacher. Quiet moments with her always meant something.
"What's the word, Elizabeth?" Alex wanted to know.
Judge Donnelley told her the truth. "Detective Rollins requested that inform you: Judge Connors, and Hugo McArthur have been arrested."
Alex's heart skipped a beat in disbelief. "What?"
"It's over, Alexandra. You are innocent."
Alex's legs gave out in relief.
Donnelley was quick to catch her student and lower her to the floor.
But then she just held Alex while she cried herself out. Despite what people said of her, Judge Elizabeth Alexandra Donnelley really did have a kind heart.
She was just as glad that one of her most favorite people in the world would be able to find peace now.
Time passed in a whirlwind for Olivia after the arrests were made.
Hugo was immediately sent to central booking. He was out of their hands. The courts would deal with him.
Exley had even called to the precinct to make sure they knew he was officially dropping any and all association he had with the McArthur family. But everyone understood.
As for Judge Connors... He was to be treated for his wounds, and then appropriately punished for his actions. He was already in so deep that even without all the mayhem he had sanctioned, he would be going away for the rest of his life. But it wasn't the squad's problem anymore. They could move on.
"Alex!"
Her heart soared at the sound of her name being said so joyfully by her favorite person.
Olivia hurried across the waiting room to her and embraced her. Kissed her. Held her.
"It's all done." the sergeant said breathlessly. "The worst is over now. And we can breath again."
Alex nodded. "My legs gave out when Judge Donnelley gave me the news. How are you?"
If Olivia had answered the question on the spot, she would've started crying. Such was an action she did not want to do in public.
Instead, she said, "I'll tell you later. Are you ready to go?"
Alex shook her head and melted into Olivia's hold. "Not yet."
Olivia rubbed Alex's back. "What are you waiting for?"
Alex pointed across the hallway. "Them."
Olivia followed her indication.
DJ could just be seen walking into Juliana's room. Pippa was at her side. Both of them were nervous.
From her bed, Juliana spoke softly and kindly. "I am so sorry. To both of you."
"What?" DJ took a small step closer. "So easily?"
Pippa was also skeptical. "Like we could forget that it was always you over Clifford who has always taken the lead in being cruel to us."
Juliana didn't rebuff what they were saying. "True. But… Things have changed. I was tormented by two different devils tonight. Escaped them both."
DJ realized what her mother meant. "You're saying that your priorities had a shift. Where is dad?"
"Somewhere in this hospital. That man let Hugo hurt me. Both of them are going to jail now."
"Good." said DJ and Pippa in perfect unison.
"I am going to divorce your father, Diana. He's on his own." Juliana sighed heavily and then looked around at her company. "My main goal is to start a new chapter. Nothing will ever be the same again. The thing is... I can start that goal unless all of you are on board."
"We are." Junior said at once.
His brothers were quick to nod in agreement.
Pippa also felt herself having a change of heart, so she also nodded. Everything else hinged on DJ now.
DJ said to her mother, "You have also been cruel about my baby. And about whom I want to spend the rest of my life with."
Juliana nodded. "Also true. Your father's worldview influenced mine—he's been part of my life for decades, you know. Of course… That's no excuse…"
"Definitely correct." DJ said seriously.
"I thought I was going to die tonight, Diana. Several times. New life priorities really have been thrust upon me. So I've been doing some thinking."
"Oh?" DJ challenged. "And do you want to be mine and Pip's buddy now?"
Juliana didn't falter. "I'll say it again: I am so sorry for everything. Maybe we could work our way to being friends?"
DJ arched an eyebrow. "Perhaps. Go on."
"For now, I just want to understand what's going in yours and Pippa's lives these days. Especially since you're both going to be mothers. I would love to offer you both a clean slate. Please?"
The matriarch's words were so sincere, DJ felt all anger towards her mother leave her soul at once. It was dizzying. And she was in tears.
"I think… I want to hug you." she finally told Juliana. "May I?"
Juliana nodded and beckoned to her. "Yes, please. Come here."
So, for the first time in far too long, mother and daughter embraced warmly.
Even Pippa was moved to want to hug Juliana.
The healing had already started.
Back in the waiting room, Alex looked to Olivia again. She was beginning to feel peace.
"I just wanted to see DJ and Pippa have at least one conversation with Juliana." she said. "Now I'm ready to go."
"Me, too."
The couple big their good-byes to the others who had migrated over to the hospital from the precinct.
But it wasn't until they'd made it to the parking garage that reason caught up with Alex.
"Babe," she said to Olivia. "My bags and things are still at my office. I was there hours ago. Doesn't even feel like today."
Olivia kissed Alex's cheered. "Our next stop is your office, to get your things."
"Really?"
"Mhm."
"Where are we going to sleep tonight? Beverly and myself, I mean?" Alex felt worried. "My home is a crime scene. I don't even want to live there again. Plus… The kids deserve better than tha…"
Alex's ramble ended in a surprised but delighted moan. Olivia had kissed her on the lips. Every other thought left her mind. Immediately.
Olivia then pulled away and held Alex's face in her hands. "I will help you in any way that you need to so you can close that door on your life. But… How would it be if you and the kids made a home with us?"
"Do you mean that?" Alex's heart jumped into her throat.
"Yes. I love you. All I want is for you to have peace and a happy life. You deserve all of that. And more." Olivia kissed her again. "You and your kids need a safe place to go. And hopefully, it could be with me. If you'd have me."
"I do. I will." Alex initiated a kiss this time. "Thank you. I love you."
"I love you, too." Olivia pressed another kiss to Alex's lips. "Ready to really get out of here?"
"Yes."
