Crown Prince Teddy Lupin-Black would not eat his peas. This was quite a problem since the kingdom of Hogwarts main export was peas. Teddy stared at the bowl of round green vegetables. His grey eyes narrowed before he smacked the bowl to the floor.
"No!" he announced loudly. "When I am king, there will be no peas!"
His dads, Remus and Sirius, only laughed, both knowing that there would be absolutely no way to abolish peas altogether. Instead, they tried to find a way to get the prince to eat the horrid things. If he didn't, they knew the people who worked the farms would see it as a sign of disrespect towards them and their livelihood.
"Maybe if we covered them in chocolate?" Remus suggested, popping a chocolate covered pea in his mouth. Sirius wrinkled his nose.
"No, what we need to do is saute them up with some mushrooms and onions, with some garlic and butter," he stated. Remus stuck out his tongue. He hated mushrooms. Teddy laughed at Remus' tongue sticking out of his mouth. He then did the same. Remus took advantage of that moment to pop a chocolate covered pea in Teddy's mouth. Teddy sucked off the chocolate coating and then spit the pea back out at Remus. Sirius burst into laughter.
"Told you so," he laughed. Remus only sighed. The great royal ball was coming up and everyone would be there, everyone would see Teddy not getting peas.
"Fine, we'll try your idea tomorrow," he sighed.
The next day, Sirius served Teddy peas that had been sauted with garlic and butter. He'd left out the mushrooms for Remus. Teddy glared at the bowl of round green orbs before trying to throw it to the floor. Sirius was too fast and managed to catch it.
"Teddy, please, just try them?" he begged. Teddy opened his mouth to protest, a spoonful of peas was shoved into it. Teddy chewed and then spat the green paste out onto the tray of his high chair.
"That didn't work either," Remus commented. Teddy laughed seeing Remus and Sirius' expressions of exasperation at his dislike of peas. "There's got to be something we haven't tried yet."
"I'll ask the royal chef if she has any ideas," Sirius said, thinking about how their chef, Alice, could make anything. She must know something they hadn't tried, some way to get Teddy to eat the national vegetable.
They tried three more different pea recipes, all to no avail. The great royal ball loomed closer and closer. Remus and Sirius were about to lose hope. On the night before the ball, a wide variety of pea dishes were brought before the royal family. Teddy eyed them all suspiciously.
"One bite?" Remus pleaded, holding up a spoon that contained pea puree mixed with strawberries. Teddy wrinkled his little nose. Remus managed to get the spoon into Teddy's mouth. The toddler chewed slowly. Sirius and Remus leaned forward, waiting for him to spit it out. Teddy swallowed and opened his mouth for more. Remus quickly fed him another bite.
"Alice really is a genius, isn't she?" Sirius asked. Remus nodded, noticing that Alice had walked into the room carrying a covered tray. She sat it down on the table and lifted the cover revealing a large cake.
"Pea cake, who knew it was a thing. I put Teddy's favorite whipped cream cheese icing on it too," she explained. Remus cut a piece. Teddy squealed loudly reaching for it. Remus put the cake on a place and placed it before Teddy. The boy grabbed handfuls of the green cake, shoving it into his mouth happily.
"Alice, make sure the strawberry dish and this cake are on the menu for the ball," Sirius ordered. Alice laughed.
"Already done, your highness," she stated excusing herself from the room as Remus wondered how difficult it would be to get the icing out of Teddy's hair.
