She was the summer sun to his winter darkness,
the budding of flowers, the light that shimmered through
the leaves of the trees that had once been lain bare
by the snow.
She was the sunlight, shining on a darkened
fall day when the sky turned black and
storms threatened to roll through his
heart and mind.
She was there, dressed in a white dress,
skirt billowing around her ankles,
a crown on top of her amber and chocolate curls
a sunny smile on her face, her eyes sparkling
as they met his.
She was the first robin of Spring,
a sign that things were going to change
that things could get better
He had always felt he'd never deserved her,
that he could never be good enough for her.
Those lies blew through the air like a northern wind,
tearing at their hearts, tearing at the tiny spark of love
they'd managed to cultivate.
She was the shelter from the storm, keeping that fire lit
she was a cliff side, strong against the howling winds
against the rough waters rocking their relationship.
There were whispers, like sleet falling from the sky
plinking against their happiness
little rumors growing, snowballing, creating a
flurry of words, of false accusations.
She stood, a tree towering beside him,
slowly, he'd grown to match her,
slowly he'd pushed past those days of
empty branches
of darkened skies,
he was becoming a light of himself,
her light when the winds blew hard
when the night was filled with
remembered terrors
nightmares and screams carrying on the
foggy night air,
he stood tall, holding her close
no longer a fortress of hidden emotions,
no longer a solitary rock standing alone
he was her rock, holding her to this plain
reminding her day after day that
there was something real
that no matter how the sky
raged with thunder and lightning,
they were united, their love
shining brighter than the sun
as their love grew
with no more walls between them,
with no more shadows in their eyes
only light shining brightly
only light reflecting the love
they'd found in each other.
