A/N: I read something that Hank may finally be given a love interest and it seems like that person could be Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller. I'm still not sure I like her nor am I sure she's good for Hank. I don't own any of the characters. There will be at least one more chapter from this one, maybe two.
Finally Talking
Hank wasn't sure when, how or why he started falling for Sam but it happened. They had been together for a short time and were planning to attend a CPD function together. They both knew everyone would start talking but neither of them cared. Everyone else was gone for the day and Hank was getting ready to call it a day, since he had to go home and get ready before he picked Sam up. He heard a knock on his office door
"Come on in."
When the door opened, he wasn't ever expecting to see this person again.
"Hey."
"What do you want?"
"Can we talk?"
"Now isn't a good time, Benson. I have some place I need to be. All of a sudden you want to talk? I haven't heard from you in 5 years when we last worked together. I told you I had feelings for you that went beyond friendship and you told me that you were with that guy from Internal Affairs."
"Then you started acting like an ass and never returned any of my phone calls. I called you after Justin died, I called you after Ed and I broke up, I called you when Noah was kidnapped, I called you when I had heard about Al, I called you when my brother came back into the picture and then died of an overdose and then I called you after Ed committed suicide. You're the one that avoided me. Not the other way around."
"You told me that your personal life was none of my business, so I stayed out of it. I have to go. I have plans."
Hank got up and put his jacket on.
"You have a date?"
"My personal life is none of your damn business!"
Olivia had tears running down her face Hank walked out of his office.
"I have feelings for you too, Hank. I always have."
She had no idea if he had heard her but he did. Hank got into his SUV and headed home to get ready, while Olivia went to grab a bite to eat. Once Hank was ready, he went to pick Sam up. As soon as she got into his SUV, she kissed him.
"Are we ready for this?"
"I don't know."
"You ok?"
"Not really. Remember I told you that I was casually involved with Olivia Benson from the NYPD up until 5 years ago?"
"Yeah, I remember. You told her you had feelings for her and then she told you she was with someone else. Some guy from Internal Affairs."
"Right. At that time, I told her that I didn't think her being involved with someone in that capacity was a good idea because this guy could make or break her career."
"Is that what you think of our relationship? I told you when we first started seeing each other that we were not going to let our jobs interfere with our personal relationship and I meant that. I realize tonight is a big step for us because people are going to talk when they see us walk in together. I really want this to work out for us but I also know you still seem to have unresolved feelings for Olivia. The sooner we get this over with, the sooner we can get out of there."
Hank drove to the hotel where the function was and by the time they arrived, his stomach was in knots. Everyone in the Chicago Police Department, including his squad were going to know that he was involved with the woman, who was basically his boss. He really wasn't much better than Olivia. Why couldn't he get that woman out of his head? It wasn't his fault that she couldn't make up her mind. He was with Sam and really wanted to see where this was going to go. Hank got out of the SUV and went around to open the door for Sam. He shut the door and offered her his arm, which she gladly accepted. They went inside. She looked so beautiful. The dress she was wearing brought out her gorgeous eyes even more. Hank had seen some of the members of Intelligence and Trudy at one table. He acknowledged them but he could see the reactions on their faces seeing him with Sam.
"Holy shit! Is Voight dating Deputy Superintendent Miller?"
"It kind of looks that way. I thought he felt something for Olivia Benson. Man, was I off!"
"You're not the only one."
"Same."
"Isn't she like his boss?"
"Yeah but it could be good for us in the long run. He's been in a better mood lately and let's face it, she spends a lot of time at the District. Personally, I think Benson is more his type."
Trudy got up and went over to Hank and Sam, who had just got something from the bar.
"Hank."
"Trudy."
"Can I talk to you for a minute please?"
"Sure."
"Excuse us, Deputy Superintendent Miller."
"Of course."
Trudy and Hank left the room and went to the lobby.
"What the hell are you doing? I thought you were in love with Olivia Benson."
"Well, you thought wrong."
"Deputy Superintendent Miller? Have you lost whatever mind you have left?"
"I'm pretty sure I have."
"Obviously she has you on a short leash."
"Listen, what happens at work, stays at work and what happens outside of work between me and her is no one's business but ours."
"People are going to talk, you know."
"So, let them. I've never cared what anyone thinks."
"I don't trust her."
"I do."
Hank walked off and went back to Sam. Olivia was staying at the same hotel where everyone was, so she came in and saw Trudy.
"Hey, Trudy."
"Olivia. What brings you here?"
"I came to talk to Hank but he has made it perfectly clear that he doesn't want to talk to me. I've contacted him multiple times in the last 5 years but he never returned my calls and he clearly doesn't want to have anything to do with me. There is a lot you don't know. Can we talk about it in my room?"
"Yeah, sure. No one will miss me anyway."
Trudy went with Olivia up to her room, so they could talk.
The last time Hank and I saw each other was 5 years ago when Yates escaped. I had just started seeing Ed and Hank had come to see me at my hotel and we slept together. It wasn't the first time. He told me he loved me and I ended up telling him that I was seeing someone else. I knew he was not happy with me after that. Not too long after that, I found out I was pregnant. I told Ed what had happened when I was here and surprisingly, he was very understanding of what had happened. I had completely expected him to break up with me. He knew that Hank had ignored all my calls. I didn't just want to leave him a message to tell him about the baby. Ed supported me, my squad supported me and the only person from Chicago that knows any of this until now was Erin. She swore she would never tell him about this."
Olivia pulled out her phone and showed Trudy a picture of her daughter.
"That's Megan."
"She looks like him."
"She does. After Ed and I broke up about a year later, I just couldn't bring myself to get into another relationship. A part of me was hoping that Hank and I could work this out and at least be civil for our little girl. She always asks about her daddy and I want to introduce her to him but he won't have anything to do with me. How can I tell him he has an almost 4½-year old daughter when he won't even talk to me?"
"I would love to tell him."
"What's the point? He'll hate me even more than he already does."
"Olivia, I am so sorry. I would have expected much better from him."
"I went to the District and tried to talk to him and he said he had somewhere he had to be. After he walked out of his office, under my breath, I said I had feelings for him too and always have. Ed committed suicide a little over a year ago because he had cancer and was given 6 months to a year to live. He had moved on and had recently gotten married when he decided to finally retire from the NYPD. One of the last things he said to me was to not give up on Hank. Megan deserves to know her daddy and he deserves to know her. I know I'm too late."
"I'll talk to him. Can you send me that picture?"
"Sure."
Olivia sent the picture of Megan to Trudy's phone and then Trudy left. Olivia called to check on the kids. When Trudy went back into the room where the function was, Hank and Sam were nowhere to be seen. She went back over to the table.
"Where'd Hank go?"
"They left but she didn't seem too happy."
Trudy left and headed to Hank's. When she arrived at his house, she got out of her vehicle and rang the doorbell. Hank answered the door.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"I'm sorry about before."
"I'm the one that should be sorry."
"Is Sam here?"
"No. I told her I couldn't do this anymore. She asked why and I said because I couldn't get over Olivia. I can't get Olivia out of my head. I've never been this confused before."
"Have you and Sam ever slept together?"
"No. I think she wanted to tonight but that's not going to happen. I was such an ass to Olivia earlier."
"I heard about that. I ran into her at the hotel. She's staying there. There's more to that than what you know. Hank, you and Olivia have a daughter?"
"What?"
"She was the result of what had happened the last time Olivia was in Chicago. She tried telling you many times but you wouldn't return her calls. That's not something she just wanted to leave on your voice mail."
Trudy pulled out her phone and showed Hank the picture of his daughter.
"Her name is Megan. Here's Olivia's room number at the hotel."
Hank wasn't sure what to say. Trudy had known Hank a long time and she knew that Hank was hardly ever at a loss for words but this time he was. She left him alone and headed home. She hadn't had anything to eat, so she fixed something when she got home. Hank sat on his sofa thinking about what Trudy had just said. Now he felt even worse. He put his shoes and jacket on, grabbed his keys and his wallet and headed back to the hotel. He parked and went in. He then went up to Olivia's room and knocked on the door. Olivia answered it.
"If you came here to continue to be an ass, I don't want you here."
"I owe you an apology."
"Damn right you do."
"Trudy told me about Megan."
"So, that's why you're here. Come on in."
Hank went into her room and then they both sat down.
"I tried telling you all those times I called. I didn't just want to leave a message on your voice mail telling you we had had a baby together. One of the last things Ed said to me was not to give up on you. Megan deserves to know her daddy and her daddy deserves to know her. He and I broke up about a year later when Megan was 3 months old. He helped me through my pregnancy as did my squad. Erin was the only person here that knew about it. She was with me in the delivery room."
"That must have been when she told me she was taking a few days off, which she hardly ever did."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm the one that should be sorry. I should have been the one there for you. I did hear what you said earlier and the thing is, I still have feelings for you too. I can't get you out of my head."
"So, are you with someone?"
"I was for about a month and I chose tonight of all nights to tell her I didn't think it was going to work out. It wasn't really all that serious. At least for me anyway. I think she thought it was starting to get serious though. We had a function that we attended here, which is why you ran into Trudy. She wanted to get us a room, so we could spend the night together. I didn't want to do something I'd end up regretting, so I told her I couldn't do this anymore. She asked why and I told her it was because I couldn't get over you. You've been in my thoughts more than I care to admit. I know I could have picked up a phone and contacted you but I didn't really know where to start. I have a feeling that she's going to start making my life at work a living hell even though she said that what happens at work stays at work and what happened outside of work, stayed there. Somehow I think all bets are off."
"So, she's a cop?"
"Yep. She's a Deputy Superintendent."
"And you let me have it for being in a relationship with someone from Internal Affairs?"
Olivia couldn't help but laugh.
"It's not that funny, Benson."
"Yeah, it kind of is."
"I realized at the time that I wasn't much better than you when Sam and I first started seeing each other. I'm not even sure I was thinking clearly. So, after you and Tucker, you never dated anyone again?"
"Nope. A part of me was kind of hoping we'd figure stuff out between us."
"I think I needed time to be pissed at you. Not that I wanted to be."
"You have every right to be mad at me now. She's been asking more and more about her daddy lately. She's a little smart ass sometimes."
"So, she's like her mother, huh?"
"More like her father. Obviously you can see she looks like you. She has the Benson last name but you are on the birth certificate. If you want to do a paternity test, I'm fine with that but I know she's yours because I hadn't been with Ed yet. We were together in that way when I was pregnant though, so I won't deny that at all. While he never made me feel the way you did, he was there when I needed someone because I was such an emotional mess and he got me through my morning sickness. I would have preferred you being the one that was there for me but you never returned any of my phone calls."
"I get it. I deserved to have another guy feeling my kid kick inside of you for the first time. I know I was never good enough for you. If you want me to meet the kid, I'll meet the kid."
"I don't want you to feel like you're obligated to meet her. I want you to want to meet her because she is a part of us. Why do you think you were never good enough for me?"
"Because I'm not."
"I've been in love with you since the moment we met even if I did threaten to arrest you. Call me crazy but the only thing I have wanted for the last 5 years was for my daughter to have the family that I never did. I never knew my father and my mother never gave a crap about me. I don't want that for her. She and Noah are my whole life but she deserves to know both of us."
"This is too much for me to deal with right now."
Hank got up, grabbed his jacket and headed home. It went better than Olivia expected but she knew he'd be upset about it.
