Sonic and Shadow battle prompt.

To help a friend learn the principles of Battle-Pacing, action, response, and reaction; and lastly, how to just build suspense in an action scene. (x) – Discussed here :) You'd be surprised how many people don't know how to write battle scenes!

Prompt:

Sonic lands in a forest area, and looks around, bending his knees up to straighten out. "…Huh?"

He suddenly looks straight up from his gazing, seeing something falling and hearing the sounds of cracking branches, leafs falling around. "Shoot!" he lunges forward, rolling as Shadow slams a fist down, and then gets up from kneeling at the impact of the fall.

Because he's the ultimate lifeform, he doesn't take much damage, and just adjust his limiter rings on his wrist, clicking them into place.

"You never let up… do you?"

"I never give up? Easy to say from someone who was just chased down!"

Sonic strikes a confident pose, flicking a finger up and swiping it over his eyesight. "Don't get cocky with me, hedgehog. I'm not here for you!" Shadow pointed past him, and glared deeply as Sonic smirked, putting his hands on his hips.

"Let's just get on with it."

Shadow suddenly burst forward, and thrust a hand back, the other out like a superman, before swinging the fist and then immediately rotating to swing a leg up.

"Woah!" Sonic braced, and took the punch by lifting an arm up, moving the impact off and away from him. When the leg came next, he quickly leaped backward and flipped a few times, before landing his feet on a tree.

"Heh, about time. Here I come!" He bolted forward, using the tree to spring him off of, and brought forward a punch.

"What? Offph!" Shadow turned around, his back momentarily facing Sonic, before getting knocked down by Sonic's punch. He shook his head and spun into a ball, shooting forward. Sonic was distracted in his prideful taunting, dusting off his hands and keeping his eyes closed, head up.

"Are you giving up yet? Heee… Wa-aoh!" Sonic turned with drooped, cocky eyes to Shadow before seeing him charging him. "Yikes! Rggrr…" He caught the ball and tried to hold it back, but the rapid spinning was doing a number on his hands, and Shadow's ball form kept spinning closer and closer to his chest… Sonic grunted and struggled to try and push the force away, but the spin ended up breaking his hold on the ball, and Sonic got pushed to the ground, skidding along it.

Shadow jumped off, uncurling, and landed with a hand on the ground, getting up and walking over to Sonic's downed state. Sonic twitched a closed eye, and looked up at Shadow. "This is all you have? Heh, pathetic." Shadow sneered, and then turned to walk off. "I'm not through with you yet!" Sonic got to his knees, holding his fists up and armed angled, ready to keep going.

"Hmm?" Shadow turned his head around.

Sonic zig-zagged forward, before disappearing.

"W-what!?" Shadow remained stunned, his arms out, looking at where Sonic should be, before Sonic appeared behind him, and slammed his held hands together into the space between his shoulder and neck.

"AHH!" Shadow fell to his knees, but Sonic just spun into a kick that had him flying up, and leaped to try and hit him again. Both in the air now, Shadow regained himself, "Hmph." and frowned more profoundly as he charged up his Chaos, crossing his arms into a 'x' formation.

"Chaos… Spears!"

He shot them forward, before Sonic flailed and struggled to dodge them in the air, getting hit and knocked down. He spun to pin-ball off some trees and shot back up, only to be knocked away by Shadow's , to match, Shadow also turned into a ball, and shot off after him.

*pausing for a second. Note how I'm creating suspense by having the battle pace to where you don't really know what's going to happen, or who's going to win.

Landing in their ball forms, they started tumbling down a hill, before uncurling and flinging or pouncing at one another.

Sonic jumped over Shadow to avoid a hit, having him face plant and skid along the rocky dirt slope, as Sonic then used Shadow's head to turn him while he was still in the air, and tried to smash his knee into Shadow's head.

Shadow rolled out of his grasp, and ran slightly upwards to get a good angle on Sonic while his knee crashed the earth beneath it, and skidded along before Sonic reverted to his back, and Shadow missed his punch, but started to wham punches left and right on Sonic's now vulnerable position.

Before hitting the end of the slope, Sonic winced through the pain and grabbed Shadow's shoulder, throwing him over him and then keeping his grip.

When Shadow's body cushioned Sonic's crash, he then used the hand that was still holding him to wobbly get the two up on their knees. He then headbutted him, and Shadow fell motionless to the dirt.

Sonic spat to the side and rubbed his hand over his mouth, before smiling.

"Now… that's what I call a challenge." he grinned, seeming unfazed by how truly beaten up he was.
